"Bullitt" (1968) was director Peter Yates' first American film. He was hired after Steve McQueen saw his 1967 U.K. feature "Robbery," with its extended car chase. Joseph E. Levine, whose Embassy Pictures had distributed "Robbery," did not like the film much, but Alan Trustman, who saw the picture the week he was writing the "Bullitt" chase scenes, insisted that McQueen, his Solar Productions partner Robert Relyea and producer Philip D'Antoni (none of whom had ever heard of Yates) see "Robbery" and consider Yates as director for "Bullitt."
Bullitt is notable for its extensive use of actual locations rather than studio sets, most notably the city of San Francisco, California, and its attention to procedural detail, from police evidence processing to emergency-room procedures. Yates' use of the new lightweight Arriflex cameras allowed for greater flexibility in location shooting.
At the time of the film's release, the exciting car chase scenes featuring McQueen at the wheel in all driver-visual scenes generated prodigious excitement. Film critic Leonard Maltin has called it a "now-classic car chase, one of the screen's all-time best." Fellow critic Emanuel Levy wrote in 2003, "'Bullitt' contains one of the most exciting car chases in film history, a sequence that revolutionized Hollywood's standards."
Drivers' point-of-view shots were used to give the audience a participants' feel of the chase. Filming took three weeks, resulting in 9 minutes 42 seconds of pursuit. McQueen, a world-class racecar driver at the time, drove in the close-up scenes, while stunt coordinator Carey Loftin, stuntman and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins, and McQueen's usual stunt driver, Loren Janes, drove for the high-speed parts of the chase and performed other dangerous stunts.
Billy Fraker, the cinematographer for the film, attributed the success of the chase sequence primarily to the work of the editor, Frank P. Keller.
The editing of the scene was not without difficulties. Noted editor Ralph Rosenblum wrote in 1979, "Those who care about such things may know that during the filming of the climactic chase scene in 'Bullitt,' an out-of-control car filled with dummies tripped a wire which prematurely sent a costly set up in flames, and that editor Frank Keller salvaged the near-catastrophe with a clever and unusual juxtaposition of images that made the explosion appear to go off on time." Tumblr media
Regarding riding gear, motorcycle leather boots are more than just a fashion statement—they're a crucial element of safety and comfort on the road. Whether you're a seasoned rider or just starting, investing in the right boots can make all the difference in your riding experience. From protection against the elements to enhancing your overall riding performance, here’s everything you need to know about motorcycle leather boots:
Why Choose Leather Boots?
Durability: Leather is renowned for its durability, making it an ideal material for motorcycle boots that need to withstand constant wear and tear.
Protection: Motorcycle boots are designed with reinforced materials and ergonomic features to protect your feet, ankles, and lower legs from impact, abrasion, and the elements.
Comfort: Quality leather boots are comfortable for long rides, offering support and flexibility where needed while maintaining breathability.
Key Features to Look For:
Material: Opt for full-grain leather or high-quality synthetic leather. These materials offer the best combination of durability and comfort.
Armor: Look for boots with built-in ankle protection, toe caps, and shin guards to shield against impact and abrasion.
Waterproofing: Consider boots with waterproof membranes to keep your feet dry in rainy conditions.
Closure System: Choose between traditional laces, Velcro, or zippers based on your preference for ease of use and security.
Sole: A grippy, oil-resistant sole provides stability and traction, crucial for maintaining control of your bike.
Style and Functionality:
Classic vs. Sport: Classic leather boots offer timeless style and versatility, while sportier options may include additional features like ventilation for warmer climates.
Color Choices: From classic black to bold colors, choose a style that complements your riding gear and personal taste.
Fit: Proper fit is essential for comfort and safety. Ensure your boots provide enough room for movement without being too loose.
Maintenance Tips:
Cleaning: Regularly clean your boots with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. Use leather conditioner to keep the material supple and prevent cracking.
Storage: Store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their shape and prevent leather from drying out.
Repair: Address any minor scuffs or tears promptly with leather repair kits to prolong the lifespan of your boots.
Conclusion:
Investing in a high-quality pair of motorcycle leather boots is an investment in both style and safety. Whether you're cruising down the highway or navigating challenging terrain, the right boots will enhance your riding experience while providing essential protection. Summary:
After being forced to graduate from JPX48 following a controversial incident with a male fan, Ai Narata swears to never interact with another man ever again. Using her talents and strong desire to get away from men, Ai auditions for the exclusive all-female Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts. The school is renowned for producing the best actresses that go on to perform in the famous all-female Kouka Theatre Troupe. Coming from the idol industry, Ai is the perfect candidate for the school’s hundredth generation class, but her aloof demeanor alienates her from her classmates. The eccentric Sarasa Watanabe is the only person who wishes to become Ai’s friend. She enters Kouka with the goal of becoming a top “otokoyaku” performer—an actress that plays traditionally male roles. After seeing a Kouka performance of The Rose of Versailles when she was younger, Sarasa dreams of performing as Lady Oscar one day. Unfortunately, Sarasa's inability to read a room causes friction between her and her classmates, including Ai, who reluctantly becomes her roommate and partner in many of their classes. Succeeding at Kouka will involve more than just raw talent for these young girls as jealousy, deceit, and the harsh realities of show business put their mental fortitude to the test. Will Sarasa and Ai be able to rise to the top and stand on the silver bridge?
Propaganda:
If theatre setting/schools is your thing, you’re probably going to love this series! We follow our protagonists and their schoolmates following their dreams to become actresses for the prestigious Kouka Revue. Not an easy road as they will have to face and overcome many challenges, the hardest ones coming from themselves. Indeed, the story is not afraid to address sensitive topics and their resulting traumas (see TW list) always rightfully handed. These episodes may be a bit hard to see if you’re sensitive to these topics, but the show never leaves you in discomfort: everything is properly addressed, and characters are cared for realistically.
The characters are all very well-written, portraying individuals with way more depth than they may appear at first glance. We follow their growth—or its start—during the series. Sarasa is a walking sunbeam, and her blooming friendship with the withdrawn Ai is a delight to watch. We learn to know—and love—all their classmates as well, as episodes switch focus to one or the other.
The OST is really good, with a catchy opening, and no less than five different versions of the ending song, a fabulous duet voiced by the cast! The animation features really pretty art with iconic details like the stars in Sarasa’s eyes. The series is a homage to Takarazuka and scatter references to famous real-life Revues and older famous shôujo manga series like “Versailles no Bara” or “Glass no Kamen”. Actually, it feels like a modernized version of their essence: roses, sparkles, spotlight, drama, all while staying safe!
This anime is like candy for eyes and soul, and I really hope we'll get a season 2 to explore the girls' voices further!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Pedophilia, Self-Harm
Nothing is too graphical nor explicit, just the right amount to let the unsettling situations be clear enough to watchers, and they’re always addressed correctly.
Child abuse/ Pedophilia: episode 3 (+4), about Ai’s traumas
Self-harm: episode 5 focuses on a girl with an eating disorder, forcing herself to vomit (not sure if that really counts as TW?)

Summary:
Freed from the rule of samurai 150 years ago, the people of Hinomoto live peaceful lives and revere their liberators—demons whose true forms remain elusive—as gods. Fated to mine rocks for the demons to feast on, Musashi knows the grim truth: humanity is enslaved by these otherworldly beings and the samurai are the last bastion fighting for freedom. Hiding his true opinion from his peers and growing distant from his childhood friend Kojirou Kanemaki, Musashi lives in angst until the day of his graduation.
When the fresh graduates arrive at the mine, they are horrified to see the inhumane treatment of miners and the uncanny physical appearance of their overseers. However, Musashi manages to endure thanks to Kojirou's help. As the demon leader wreaks havoc on the quarry, Musashi is saved once more from certain death by the Takeda samurai clan. Recovering from humiliation and yearning for adventure, Musashi embarks on a journey to become a samurai and form his own clan!
Propaganda:
Ohtaka has done it again in creating a world full of characters with more depth than can be portrayed limited amount of screen time that each of them get. This leaves the viewer with a whole lot of potential to imagine on their own, even after watching. It’s kind of unique that it is set in the samurai era of Japan, but thanks to crystals left by the demons, motorcycles and flying castles are a thing outside the main characters’ mining village. There are plenty of gags throughout and dynamics between characters. Personally, I loved the second half a lot more than the first because of the cast introduced then. For example, the detail given to Kuroku with the lace she wears–it’s so intricately beautiful! Plus, most of the mechanics of how the world works is covered by then, so we can get into the action.
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse
The third main character comes from a mentally abusive family situation, but the other two help her leave that situation. Main character’s child abuse is in flashbacks for character development to rise above that and break the cycle. Don’t know if gore or fan service need a trigger warning, typical shounen stuff.

What's new on PlayStation?
Tumblr media
There are a handful of exciting new additions exclusive to PlayStation:
Haptic Feedback: The PS5 version features a completely new haptics integration. It allows you to feel the details of each impact, scrape, skid, and the abilities themselves in a whole new way. Since the haptics are largely audio driven I had a ton of fun working on this and it’s easily one of my favorite aspects of playing on PS5.
Activity Features: Easily track campaign progress from the control center, jump into a mode directly from the home screen, and see in-game help on campaign levels if needed.
Controller Lighting: On both PS4 and PS5 the controller lights with the glow color of your car. This helps to see overheat status as well as identify controllers during split-screen.
Regarding performance, Distance targets 60 fps across all single player content. On PS4 the game utilizes 1080p, and on PS5 it runs at 4K resolution. The PS4 Pro and PS5 version have both been enhanced with higher graphics quality and smoother performance. While there are dips here and there on the PS4, overall I think it runs pretty well, and it's even better on PS5 despite running at 4K.
Differences between PC and consoles
For those of you who’ve been enjoying Distance on PC, you’ll find that the core gameplay experience and overall features are extremely similar on PlayStation. There are of course some differences so I’d like to discuss them here.
I’ve talked previously about the technical limitations regarding Steam Workshop and the level editor, so at this time those aren’t available in Distance: Console Edition. Instead, we decided to officially include our favorite community-created levels directly into the base game for everyone to play. For example, our recent Kinetic Update (v1.5) on PC included 15 incredible new levels from the community and these will also be available on PlayStation!
Regarding online multiplayer, I completely understand that for some it might come as a shock to see it not included on consoles. While we have collectively spent a ton of time working on online multiplayer for PlayStation consoles, a series of unfortunate technical hurdles have led to it not being feasible for release at this time. Split-screen multiplayer is included however and allows for couch multiplayer in Arcade modes. For those curious about the behind-the-scenes technical info, please see below for a more detailed breakdown explanation.
With all that in mind, Distance: Console Edition is at a reduced price of $19.99 / €19.99. While it is possible that future updates will enable more content and features, please purchase with the assumption that the base game will not massively change in the future.
Getting into the technical details
If you’ve been following Distance for a while you’re probably aware that the PlayStation version has had a fairly long and tumultuous development. It was our first time developing anything for a console, and it’s been an incredible learning experience throughout.
Many years ago around the v1.0 launch we had a version of Distance using Unity 5 working somewhat reasonably on PS4 with several multiplayer features functional (though certainly not finished). After launching v1.1 I spent a lot of time implementing all of the various technical certification requirements for online play on PS4. This included things like parental chat restrictions, online ID consistency, etc.
As I was preparing to send a new build to Sony, I came to realize that to pass certification Distance needed to update to a much newer PS4 SDK version required by Sony. Unfortunately, this version of Unity 5.5 we used to develop Distance for years was locked to a very old PS4 SDK version, and the only option was to port Distance (yet again) to a much newer version of Unity. To comply with Sony's requirements, we needed to upgrade Unity from version 5.5 to Unity 2020. This unfortunately wasn’t negotiable and, as you might imagine, it took months to repair the various graphics and physics issues that came along with it.
The biggest hurdle was that our multiplayer system was completely dependent on the old Unity 5.5 version. The newer versions of Unity had fully abandoned their old multiplayer integration, meaning I basically had to start from scratch. One possibility was to attempt to replicate the custom RakNet backend we had relied on, but Unity’s version made several changes under the hood and without source code access it was challenging to emulate it. The other possibility was to simply rewrite everything from scratch and utilize an entirely new multiplayer system.
In short, I attempted both routes. After spending quite some time attempting to essentially rewrite all of Jason’s multiplayer tech, I realized doing this on my own will take an incredibly long time to get fully functional and properly tested. Between this issue, complications due to COVID, and my own personal issues with recovering from burnout, this was honestly a really frustrating time and one of the big reasons I decided to take a break from Distance development. As I mentioned in my September 2023 blog post I decided to go on a short hiatus to work on Project 2, and of course I enjoyed working on Project 2 so much that my short break soon became much longer.
Upon returning to Distance last year with a fresh perspective I made the incredibly tough call to disable online multiplayer for now. I would then focus on wrapping up all of the other features and content we have and get it into players’ hands as soon as possible. Of course it still took significantly longer than I expected to wrap up that last 1%, but at long long last we’re finally here.
Looking ahead
I really can’t say enough how much I’ve appreciated everyone’s patience and support during these challenging times. I’ve truly been blown away by the enthusiastic response to the Kinetic Update, and I’m so excited to keep creating and sharing stuff with you all.
To all of our new PlayStation players, welcome to the Distance community! I can’t wait to see which players take the top times on the new leaderboards. Please note that the best way to connect with other players is on the Distance Discord server.
You also might have noticed that there is a new remix of Isolation in the PlayStation release trailer. I’ve been developing a lot of new music for Project 2 and intend to release some songs officially soon, so please be on the lookout for more information about that. I’ll also be posting here and on social media when updates are released for PC and PlayStation.
Thank you all again!

Honda S600 SM convertible
The Honda S600 is a remnant from Honda's fledgling days of building cars. They launched production of their first automobile, the T360 kei truck, in 1963. Their second car, the ambitious S500 sports car, was put into production shortly after, sowing the seeds for its successor, the S600, which featured an engine enlarged from 531cc to 606cc. The S600 was built between 1964 and 1966, with a total of 13,084 S600s built in both roadster and fastback coupe body styles. In 1964, a year after its launch, the company immediately set about updating it and the result was the S600. Their new car took the predecessor’s high performance and helped Honda’s name become more well known in the 4-wheeled world. The biggest change was to the engine, engine displacement was increased to 606cc to overcome the previous generation's lack of torque at low revs. The result was 57hp at an astonishing 94hp per litre. It reached a top speed of 145kph, a number comparable to that of a sports car with twice the displacement. It’s beautifully styled body is of course one of the factors that make it a classic. The long bonnet gave it a typical sports car look and it only weighed 695 kg which meant that it was both attractive to look at and fun to drive. Honda was already known for their success in motorcycle racing and they entered the world of car racing with the S600. In May of 1964, at the second Japanese Grand Prix, held at the Suzuka circuit, it suddenly became a force to be reckoned with. The top positions in the 1,300cc class were completely dominated by the S600s. All 11 cars that competed finished the race and took the circuit by storm. The success was not just domestic. That same year, the team took part in the Nürburgring 500km race and won its class. This was the first time a Japanese sports car had won a race in Europe, the home of motorsport. The S600 had all the elements to win the hearts of young car lovers: design, driving enjoyment and performance.Honda's experience with small, rev-happy engines gained from their motorcycle production aided them in building the power plants for these early sports cars, which Honda later paid tribute to with their S2000.

These vehicles not only define the genre but also reflect the essence of cyberpunk - edgy, futuristic, and downright badass. So, let's rev up the engines and dive into this list, complete with a "Badass Rating" out of 10 for each. And remember, the world of cyberpunk is vast, so be sure to share your own favorites in the comments below!
Blade Runner's Spinner
Badass Rating: 9/10
The Blade Runner Spinner is the quintessential cyberpunk vehicle, a hovering police car that patrols the dystopian skies of Los Angeles. Its sleek design, V8 engine growl, and vertigo-inducing flight capabilities make it a standout in the genre. The Spinner's iconic presence is a testament to its enduring popularity and status as a symbol of cyberpunk cool.
Akira's Kaneda's Bike
Badass Rating: 10/10
Kaneda's bright red motorcycle is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a statement of rebellion. With its eye-catching design, unmatched speed, and deafening engine roar, Kaneda's bike is the embodiment of freedom in Neo-Tokyo. Its role in the landmark anime "Akira" cements its legendary status in cyberpunk lore.
Ghost in the Shell's Tachikoma
Badass Rating: 8/10
The Tachikoma, spider-like AI tanks from "Ghost in the Shell," blend cuteness with lethality. These agile and intelligent machines are an indispensable asset for Section 9, combining firepower with unmatched mobility. Their endearing personalities add an unexpected layer of depth to the cyberpunk world.
The Matrix's Nebuchadnezzar
Badass Rating: 7/10
The Nebuchadnezzar is a gritty workhorse in the world of "The Matrix." This hovercraft is the last bastion of humanity's resistance, shuttling the crew between the real world and the simulated one. While it may lack the flashy aesthetics of other cyberpunk vehicles, its importance in the narrative is immeasurable. Judge Dredd's Lawmaster
Badass Rating: 9/10 In Mega-City One, where the law is enforced with an iron fist, the Lawmaster is Judge Dredd's trusty steed. Armored, armed, and AI-assisted, this two-wheeled juggernaut embodies authority and power. It's the perfect ride for dishing out instant justice on the chaotic streets.
Total Recall's Johnny Cab
Badass Rating: 6/10
Johnny Cab may not be the flashiest vehicle on this list, but it's an intriguing addition to the cyberpunk world. As an automated taxi service, it adds a touch of eerie coolness to the streets of "Total Recall." Its unsettling interactions with passengers give it a unique place in the genre.
Deus Ex's VTOL
Badass Rating: 8/10 In the world of "Deus Ex," the VTOL aircraft is the epitome of high-tech transportation. With vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, advanced weaponry, and futuristic aesthetics, it perfectly complements the espionage missions of a cyberpunk agent. How to Stay Comfortable on Long Rides with Your BMW K1600
The BMW K1600 is the perfect motorcycle for long-distance riding, known for its smooth performance, advanced features, and exceptional comfort. However, staying comfortable on extended rides requires more than just a great bike. Proper preparation, the right gear, and mindful riding techniques can significantly enhance your comfort, ensuring that you enjoy every mile.
Tumblr media
1. Invest in Quality BMW K1600 Long-Distance Riding Gear
Choosing the right gear is essential for a comfortable long-distance ride on your BMW K1600. Here are a few must-have items:
Helmet: A high-quality, well-ventilated helmet ensures head protection and comfort. Look for helmets with noise reduction and a sun visor to reduce glare.
Riding Jacket and Pants: Select gear with adequate ventilation and weatherproof materials to handle different climates. Opt for motorcycle-specific apparel designed for long rides, which typically includes extra padding in critical areas.
Gloves: Invest in durable, breathable gloves that provide a good grip without sacrificing comfort. Proper gloves help reduce hand fatigue during long hours of riding.
Riding Boots: Comfortable, waterproof riding boots are essential for protecting your feet and keeping them comfortable over long distances. Boots with ankle support and non-slip soles offer both comfort and safety.
Heated Gear: In colder climates, heated vests, gloves, and grips can keep you warm and focused on the road, especially during early morning or evening rides.
All of these items are part of the BMW K1600 long-distance riding gear setup, which can greatly enhance your comfort and safety on extended trips.
2. Adjust Your BMW K1600 for Optimal Comfort
Even with the best riding gear, your BMW K1600 needs to be set up for long-distance comfort. Make these adjustments before hitting the road:
Seat Positioning: Ensure the seat height is correct for your body type. An adjustable seat is a big advantage for long-distance riding, as you can alter its height and tilt to minimize pressure points.
Handlebar Adjustment: Adjust your handlebars to prevent excessive leaning forward. You want a natural, relaxed riding posture to avoid strain on your back and shoulders.
Suspension Tuning: Properly tuned suspension helps smooth out rough roads and improves handling. The BMW K1600 comes equipped with an advanced suspension system, so make sure to fine-tune it based on the weight of your gear and riding style.
3. Take Breaks and Stretch
Even with all the right gear and bike adjustments, long-distance riding can still lead to fatigue. To stay comfortable, schedule regular breaks:
Stretching: Take time to stretch your legs, back, and arms during breaks. Stretching helps improve circulation and prevents stiffness during long rides.
Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout your journey. Dehydration can cause fatigue and decrease focus, so pack enough water and drink at regular intervals.
Plan Rest Stops: Rest stops give your body a chance to recover. Use these stops to relax, recharge, and enjoy the scenery.
4. Stay Focused and Maintain Good Posture
Your riding posture affects how comfortable you feel after hours on the road. Here’s how to maintain good posture while riding your BMW K1600:
Relax Your Shoulders and Arms: Tension in your upper body can lead to discomfort. Keep your shoulders and arms relaxed, and avoid gripping the handlebars too tightly.
Keep Your Feet Positioned Correctly: Your feet should rest comfortably on the footpegs, allowing you to shift and move naturally as you ride.
Engage Your Core: By engaging your core muscles, you’ll reduce strain on your back, helping you stay more comfortable throughout the ride.
Conclusion
Long-distance riding on the BMW K1600 can be an exhilarating experience, but comfort is key to enjoying the journey. By investing in quality BMW K1600 long-distance riding gear, adjusting your bike for comfort, taking breaks, and maintaining good posture, you’ll ensure that every mile is as enjoyable as the first. Stay prepared, stay comfortable, and ride confidently.

Davinci Motor's DC100 High-Performance Electric Motorcycle,
The DC100 rivals its 1,000cc gas-powered counterpart when it comes to performance, evidenced by outstanding technical data: acceleration 0-100 km/h in about 3 sec, top speed of 200 km/h, peak power of 100 kw, and peak torque of 850 Nm. On top of all that, the DC100 was designed using new energy vehicles (NEV) as a benchmark for range and charging method, elevating industry standards of two-wheeled electric vehicles.
The DC100 is compatible with L3 DC Fast Chargers in the United States, Europe and China, which can deliver a full charge in about 30 minutes.
Designed with a robotic concept, the DC100 is capable of sensing, computing and executing. While riding, the DC100 has the capacity to track accurate information such as ambient temperature, battery and motor temperature, lean angle, traveling speed, wheel speed and road conditions.
Furthermore, it combines this vehicle and environmental data and user commands to precisely control its power system. To address the difficulty of riding a heavy-duty motorcycle, the DC100 is designed with various assist features (with over 300 chips and 200 sensors) including the Hill Start Assist Control and Hill Descent Control, Reverse Assist, Combined Braking System, Traction Control System, all of which render the riding experience easier and safer.
Hence, the DC100 is a two-wheeled dynamic robot in both appearance and performance.

Movie Tag Game
Tagged in by @owlrageousjones! List seven favorite films, and then seven mutuals. (I'm going to whiff on the latter; sans the spouse, I don't have many movie buffs in my orbit.)
Favorite Movies
1. The Godfather (1972, dir. Francis Ford Coppola); 2. Batman Begins (2005, dir. Christopher Nolan); 3. The Dark Knight (2008, dir. Christopher Nolan); 4. Die Hard (1998, dir. John McTiernan).
There's a reason these four are grouped together! There was a time when my spouse struggled with falling asleep; and so we employed the above films as a soothing soundtrack, against which they could peacefully nod off.
(At least, as soothing as one might expect from a chorus of Chicago typewriters, eagerly punctuating Sonny Corleone; or John McClane, yelling intensely as he improvisationally repels down the side of Nakatomi Plaza.)
5. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997, dir. George Armitage).
An unusual blend of dark comedy, romance, and the occasional action set-piece; all set to a Gen X soundtrack. The premise sounds like high-concept word salad ("An ailing assassin in the midst of a midlife crisis rekindles an old relationship and battles fellow death-dealing competitors while attending his high school reunion"); and yet it somehow just works in the hands of the superbly capable cast.
(As a personal aside: there is a scene in which the protagonist finds himself staring into the wide eyes of a newborn infant, as Queen and David Bowie's Under Pressure swells in the background. I found this moment particularly touching; not least of which because it spurred me to the realization that I wanted to become a parent.)
6. John Wick (2014, dir. Chad Stahelski).
A fantastic example of a modestly-budgeted action film succeeding wildly on the strength of its compelling premise, intriguing world-building, and marriage of breathtaking choreography and stylish cinematography.
(Honorable mentions: Drive (1997); Dredd (2012); and The Raid: Redemption (2011) and it's follow-up, The Raid 2: Berandal (2014).)
7. Transformers: The Movie (1986, dir. Nelson Shin).
My god; there is so much I can (and will!) say about this movie.
For starters: it is not, conventionally-speaking, good.
Toy manufacturer Hasbro demanded that the dramatis personae of the first two seasons of the Transformers cartoon be written off; to make room for a new cast (and by extension, new toys). The producers gleefully complied by slaying beloved characters in an orgy of robot-on-robot violence that traumatized a generation of movie-going children.
(I should know; I was one of them!)
The narrative is nonsensical; and bounces frantically from one hair metal-accompanied set piece to the next without pause - until our protagonist (who has grown in literal height, if not as a person) unleashes the power of a previously undocumented McGuffin to save the day.
(In this respect, I harbor the belief that the producers cribbed significantly from 1981's Heavy Metal; which, respectfully, should probably not be the first choice of inspiration for a children's movie.)
Despite these deficiencies, however: it is a very, very watchable film!
The characters are likeable; the dialog, eminently quotable; and the voice cast perform their utmost.* The animation is spectacularly frenetic; and the soundtrack is surprisingly catchy (featuring the work of Stan Bush and Vince DiCola - notable for their contributions to Bloodsport and Rocky IV, respectively; and even "Weird Al" Yankovic)!
More than anything: this is a movie that trades in Rule Of Cool™ with childlike glee:
"What if we had a fully-operational battlestation; but instead of blowing planets up with a laser, it ate them?"
"...The two of them are out of ammo, and there's hundreds of enemies. So they hold a destruction derby - only it's underwater, right?"
"So the barbarian trash robots turn into motorcycles, and take turns riding each other, and they chase the good guys and then the good guy leader is exploded but it's okay, because the other good guys use the power of nonsense words to convince the trash robots to make him better; and then they have a dance-off..."
You won't learn anything from watching Transformers: The Movie; but it's fun, and strange, and surprisingly creative (while still operating within the unexplained requirement that everything and everyone turn into a robot, sooner or later)!
* There is a persistent rumor that Orson Welles was displeased to have starred in what was effectively a glorified toy commercial; exacerbated by both his self-professed lack of understanding of the movie's premise and plot, and his passing just five days after completing recording. This was not the case, however; as his grandchildren were fans, and he was enthused to have contributed to a franchise they loved.
