okay SO my absolute favourite rendition of Tam Lin is by folk artist S.J. Tucker/her band Tricky Pixie. It is available on zero streaming services, though the MP3s are on their bandcamp, BUT people have posted many shitty camcorder videos of the song being preformed and they have my whole heart. I have this video downloaded to my laptop in case YouTube ever nukes it. It has so much energy? And is so dynamic? good stuff

As a Torontonian, seeing the HAV-A-NAP MOTEL in that finale was hilarious. It's notorious as probably one of the worst, if not THE worst, motels in the city. Rooms by the hour so to speak (prob by the minute if you asked them). Seeing it in Harvey's posts last year was triggering (in a funny way, but still...shudder) 😂😂

*Ashlynn's POV* Classes went as normal, however was odd when you nor Bridget saw either of the VKs...

"Guess they're getting ready for Castlecoming too," Bridget guesses

"Maybe," You say, "But, wouldn't count out something vile..."

"Don't be like that," Bridget smiles, "I'm sure it'll be nothing."

You weren't one to crush her optimism....

"If you say so," You sigh

You walk Bridget back to her dorm.

"I'll be here at six," You smile

"Okay, see you then," She smiles, giving you a quick cheek kiss before entering her dorm

*Bridget's POV* As you bake your heart away, your eyes drift to the green rose Ashlynn had given you the other day...

You couldn't help but smile for yourself. Just for once, you might have found the person that you want to see regularly... Romantically.

Ella meets you at your dorm to get ready together.

"Are you sure it's okay if I show up with you and Ashlynn?" Ella asks

"Of course," You answer, "I want to make sure everyone gets to experience Castlecoming."

"Seems like it's going to be a date for you and Ashlynn," She says

"You think so?" You ask

"How did 'dress shopping' go?" She asks

Ashlynn takes a step back and lift her hand over your head, twirling you. She smiles as the dress elegantly spins with her. You gasp as she pulls you into her body and dip you.

The both of you maintain eye contact as she holds you there. Your hand slowly caresses her cheek and she slowly lets you up onto your feet.

"I think this is the dress," She concludes, clearing her throat

"It went... Fine," You say

"Just... Fine?" She asks

You turn at your shoulder being tapped on. Your eyes light up at the sight of Ashlynn. You lightly gasp as you see her lift a rose and perch it on the top of your ear, tucking your hair behind it in the process.

"Mhm," You answer, attempting to hide your blush

"Oh, I see it went well," Ella teases you

*Ashlynn's POV* You adjust the tie on your outfit. You weren't really one to dress fancy. Heck, you didn't have the funds to... You'd just steal it... But, for Bridget, you didn't want to. She never asked you to, but you had a feeling she'd tell you not to.

You knock on the door to her dorm, you could hear that she happily squealed and ran to the door. She flings her arms around your shoulders as she gives you the tightest hug.

"Gosh you look so... Beautiful," You smile

She giggles as she twirls into your body. You nearly fall backwards as she presses her back into your chest.

"Are you excited?" She asks, smile still plastered to her face

"In a way," You reply, "Wish you were the one catering for the event."

"Please, I wouldn't have time to find my dress," She rolls her eyes playfully, "Besides, I only bake. I haven't tried cooking yet."

"You two lovebirds ready to go?" Ella asks as she wats by the door

You feel Bridget's fingers interlocking with yours...

The three of you walk through the doors to the main courtyard. Charming was the first to notice the three of you. Bridget gives Ella a little push as he comes over. Bridget pulls you away from Ella as she attempts to look back at the both of you however, the both of you disappeared into the crowd.

The both of you watch as Ella takes Charming's arm and wander into the event.

"Mission accomplished," She high fives you

"So.... What do you want to do now?" You ask

Before you could even say yes, she began dragging you to the dance floor.

"Don't eat that!" You yank the cupcake from Bridget's hands

She gasps. Bridget's brows furrow at you.

*Bridget's POV* You knew she stole... But, not once did you ever think she'd steal from you. But here she was... Your heart sunk the second she stole the cupcake from you... Your ticket to a start of making a friendship with the VKs... Ruined...

"Ash, what's gotten into you?!" You ask, angrily

*Ashlynn's POV* You look at Uliana: her face beginning to contort with annoyance.

"I will never let you get your so-called revenge," You say, turning to Bridget next

"I'm sorry Bridget..." You say before ingesting the cupcake

*Bridget's POV* "You'll forgive me for this, I promise..." She says

You watch in horror as Ashlynn stands from her chair, groaning in pain. Her skin begins turning green, her teeth grow to different sizes, growing horns... She looked... Like a monster...

"Looks like Bridget brought the ugliest date to Castlecoming!" Uliana begins laughing

The other VKs joined in... But it was just them.

Ashlynn turns her back to you and walks out of Castlecoming...

Ash...

For the first time... You actually felt... Anger. You wanted to tell Uliana off for the sick prank... But, Ashlynn needed you more.

"Ash?!" You call out for her, running to where she had walked off

As the lights from the Academy grow dimmer, it was becoming more difficult to pinpoint anything...

"Ashlynn!" You call out for her

You notice someone sitting at the edge of the lake; Ashlynn... You don't hesitate to approach her...

"Hey.... You," You sit next to her, not making eye contact, "I understand why you stole the cupcake..."

"I knew Uliana was up to something," She says, "It isn't like her to suddenly be nice. Unless she was planning something."

"Why didn't you just throw it onto the ground?" You ask

"I had to show you what would have happened if you ate it," She explains, "In the moment, I had a feeling you wouldn't have believed me if I just said..."

"I'm surprise no one laughed at you," You say, changing the subject, "Well, other than the VKs..."

"Can't hurt my feelings if they aren't my friends," She says, "Well, you weren't laughing so... That's better than you laughing..."

"Of course I didn't," You attempt to meet her eyes, "I would never laugh at you..."

"I must look ugly right?" She asks

"No, you don't," You say, "It's not permanent."

You take her hand into yours as it slowly turns back into a regular human hand.

"I appreciate you eating that cupcake..." You confess

"Couldn't let them have what they wanted," She says, "Well, Uliana..."

"I guess I can see now on what you guys meant...." You say, "I'm sorry I didn't see it before..."

"You don't have to apologize for being yourself Bridge," She says, "I didn't want to have our first Castlecoming be ruined..."

"Well, it is now..." You sigh, "They did this to you..."

"Well, I don't care what they do to me," She says, "I mostly cared what they were going to do to you..."

"You-you did?" You ask

"Well, yeah," She says, "You're the most sweetest, open-hearted person I have ever met... Something inside me said to myself: 'let no one make a fool of her. Even if it means you'd make a fool of yourself.'."

"You'd rather make a fool of yourself?" You ask

She nods...

Like the other night, your body moves faster than your brain can make a decision. You give her a cheek kiss.

"Oh, the spell is wearing out," You note

She looks down and sees her hands fully back to normal. Your hand caresses her cheek as she turns back to her regular human skin tone.

"Looks like a 'true love's kiss' was the perfect antidote for this spell," She jokes

The both of you re-enter castlecoming. All of the eyes lay upon Ashlynn specifically; Uliana walking up to the both of you.

"I'm surprised that you came back," She smirks, "I thought that you would have run back home crying."

"Me?" She asks, "No, you don't scare me Uliana."

"Please, you have no special powers," She continues to mock you, "You don't scare me either."

*Ashlynn's POV* "I may not be special, but I don't put others down and project my insecurities onto them just to make myself feel better," You say

Uliana opens her mouth, but nothing comes out. You turn your head, your ear facing her.

Still nothing...

"That's what I thought," You say, crossing your arms

"This isn't over Hood," She growls

She begins stomping away.

"Oh, I will be waiting!" You say

The VKs follow behind Uliana. You hear cheers erupting behind you. you turn around and see all of the other students coming over and applauding you.

"Yo! That was amazing Ash!" Charming exclaims, "Other than Ella, I have never seen anyone argue with Uliana like that!"

"Now we can enjoy Castlecoming!" Tsf/n yells

Everyone cheers as the music begins back up again.

"Care to dance?" You ask, outstretching your hand to her

She smiles from ear to ear as she happily takes your hand. You lead her to an open spot on the dance floor, where the both of you were the only pair that had a gap between the two of you. However, you nearly fall into her; the gap finally gone. You look over once you gained your bearings; Ella...

"Your friend is definitely something B," You chuckle

"She's probably returning the favor we did for her earlier tonight," She concludes

The gap was still gone, neither of you wanted to pull away.

"Is being this close making you uncomfortable?" She asks

"Not at all, what about you?" You ask

"The feeling is mutual," She answers

Bridget lays her head onto your shoulder as the both of you sway to the slow music... Losing track of time...

As you pull away from Bridget's embrace and see that you two were the last two people on the dance floor.

"Guess the party's over... Come on, I'll walk you back to your dorm," You say

Bridget turns to you as the both of you stop at her dorm room door.

"I had a lot of fun," She tells you, "Well, except the prank..."

"I did too," You reply, "Well, t could be a funny story to tell."

"Hopefully you won't be known as the ugly troll monster," She says

"I'm sure they'll be talking about how Uliana's plan got foiled by a Hood," You say

The both of you stand in awkward silence... For a moment.

Joe Biden has literally slipped on a banana peel. Following his dismal performance at the 1st Presidential Debate, he has made a series of blunders that now has him under a microscope. It's gotten so bad, that folks are criticizing the way he walks up the stairs of Air Force One... Biden made several appearances to shore up his Social Capital, but few were effective. From his interview w/ George Stephanopoulos, to his 'Big Boy NATO Summit' to his telephone interview on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'; Joe Biden has raised more questions than providing answers. An increasing number of Congressional Democrats, Elites, & Big Money Donors- from Chuck Schumer, to Jeffrey Katzenberg, George Clooney & Rob Reiner are asking him to step down. Political Pundits across many platforms have expressed publicly how Joe Biden is weakening Congressional Democrats running for Re-Election.

Biden has been adamant about staying in Office, but has recently said that he's open to discussion. Black Politicians & Democratic Shills like Whoopi Goldberg, Roland Martin, Symone Sanders, D.L. Hughley & Joy Reid continue to Circle the Wagon, but hardcore Biden advocates like Joe Scarborough & Van Jones have admitted that his Poll #s are damaging the overall Democratic Party. Presidential Politics IS a Blood Sport. When a Candidate runs for POTUS, their Record of Service is on full display. There is a reason why Kamala Harris hasn't been mentioned before now. Many assume that she is being left out because of her Race, but Political Pundits admit that NO ONE really likes her. Kamala has wore several hats during her Political Career, but she has few accomplishments to tout for her Years of Service. As District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, & U.S. Senate Member, Kamala Harris has been detrimental to Black Californians. Her Record is one of disenfranchisement & incarceration of Blackfolk. Harris, Nancy Pelosi, & Dianne Feinstein share responsibility for the Current State of Black America in The Bay Area. She was originally touted as the '1st South Asian (i.e. Indian) American Woman elected into the U.S. Senate', but has somehow been mysteriously transformed into a 'Black Woman'.

For The Record, Kamala Harris is neither Afrikan American or Black. Her Mother is Brahmin & her Father is Brahmin & Irish Jamaican; her Father's Irish side were Slaveholders. She was born in Oakland & later relocated to Berkeley, after her parents separated. Kamala was bused to a predominantly White Elementary School, before her Mother relocated to an affluent Community in Montreal. She attended Junior High & High School in Montreal before returning to America, to attend Howard University. THIS is where Kamala's 'Black Experience' begins. Rumor has it that she became a Sweetheart of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. (a Kappa Diamond) & later pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Post Grad, Kamala returned to The Bay Area, where she became associated w/ Democratic Party Power Broker & former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The former Mayor positioned Kamala on a couple of Commissions (that paid $400K over 5Yrs) & her 1st run to become San Francisco District Attorney.

Kamala Harris has been very fortunate during her Political Career, but her tenure as Vice President has exposed her flaws. She's had a revolving door of Staffers that cite factions & infighting w/i her Camp. Harris has been described as crass & vulgar towards her Staff- dropping F- bombs & denigrating them during Meetings. Former Speech Writers say they were confounded by her inability to follow Scripts. Aside from Abortion Rights, no one can point to an Issue that Harris has championed w/ consistency. Her tenure as Vice President has been compared w/ Dan Quayle's. Joe Biden put Kamala in charge of the Southern Border, but he was forced to issue an Executive Order; to clean up her inability to stop the flood of Illegal Immigrants coming from All Four Corners of The World. Kamala Harris is not known for promoting Pet Policy Projects, like Al Gore or Michelle Obama; She's better known for:

Currently, Kamala Harris is a weaker opponent against Donald Trump, than Joe Biden. She's only being considered, because the Biden- Harris Campaign Fund can't be accessed if another group of Candidates are selected. Somewhere between $100M- $300M is at stake. A DNC Super PAC is withholding another $90M in anticipation of Biden stepping down. Michelle Obama's name has been tossed around as a potential Candidate for POTUS, but she has said on several occasions that she's NOT interested. I would be surprised if she changed her mind. Personally, I don't think ANY MAN can beat Donald Trump & the only Woman that could give Trump a Real Fight, is Tulsi Gabbard. She's a Generational Candidate that has the pedigree of Military Service, plus the Political & Social Capital needed to get Voters to the Voting Booths. Tulsi is far from being 'The Perfect Candidate', but People can visualize her having meaningful discussions w/ World Leaders. By contrast, Kamala Harris looks like a cartoon character on The World Stage; few actually believe that she can command the respect of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, & EU Leaders.

At this point, Democrats are in a No Win situation. Joe Biden campaigned in 2020 as a One Term President, but now he dares ANYONE to take him on at the Democratic National Convention. His selfishness & egocentrism has damaged the Democratic Party's chance of holding on to The White House. He says that he wouldn't have chosen Kamala Harris to be his VP if she wasn't capable of being President, but We KNOW that he only chose her because Black Women DEMANDED a Black Female Running Mate, in return for their vote. Ironically, Kamala doesn't fill that slot figuratively or literally. She let Black Women know early in her 2020 Campaign that she wasn't going to do ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY for Black Americans. Like Joe Biden, Harris offered a 'Lift Act' that promised Blackfolk more of the same 'Rising Tide' Democratic jargon. Despite this, roughly 86% of Black Americans supported the Biden- Harris Ticket; hoping this Administration would reward their loyalty & support w/ Real Policy.

Like Joe Biden, Kamala Harris NEEDS the Black Vote to win the General Election. The Problem is, Democrats have NO INTENTION of offering anything tangible to Black America. Despite the Doom & Gloom scenarios being pushed by Democratic Shills, an increasing number of Black Americans are refusing to vote Blue w/o getting something tangible in return. Democratic Elites thought they could play 'Chicken' w/ Blackfolk, but are beginning to realize how serious We are. Black Democratic Shills have been trying to corral The Black Vote, but they don't have the same influence that they held in previous years. Kamala Harris didn't help her Cause, when she said: 'We all know about the 20 Acres & a Mule'... Her casual disregard of Black Specific Issues rivals Joe Biden's. The Fact that Democrats have been forced to admit Biden's physical & mental decline will set The Party back at least 4 Years.

As I said before, Black America sits in the Catbird Seat! The rest of the Country may dread a 2nd Trump Presidency, but it's just 'Another Day in The Life' for Us. Our Ancestors survived 8 Years of Woodrow Wilson & over 50 Years of J. Edgar Hoover. We KNOW what a Dictator looks like. We also know that Every City will burn before We comply w/ The Heritage Foundation's 'Wish List' known as Project 2025. We just have to Get On Code & Stand Our Ground. Unlike the Millions of Colonists that occupy This Land, We're INDIGENOUS & have a Spiritual Connection to it; Millennia of Blood & Bones in The Soil. Unlike the newcomers, Perseverance is in Our Genetic Memory. Donald Trump is just the Latest 'Flavor of The Month'... We already survived a Trump Administration.

The acknowledgement of Joe Biden's decline puts Democrats in a bad position so late into the Election Season. It's not even clear if Dems can take him off The Ballot in several States. The fact that Kamala Harris cannot make a seamless transition into The Oval Office is creating a Civil War w/i The Party. sensible! practical! layered! and a damn sight less expensive per item than a woolen cloak and beret set that I don't recall her ever wearing past that first day. not to mention that bev is never caught dead in a windbreaker, her equivalent is a woolen peacoat.

and it continues on like this throughout - bev's outfits are consistently a step nicer than anyone else's. this isn't a commentary on how feminine the outfits are, because erin's outfits are on a similar level of femininity while being noticeably less expensive*. and it's not that bev's clothes are impossible to find at major retailers but at least in my experience (and maybe it's different in crockett island's region! my fast fashion experiences are not universal) it's going to be way easier to find something like erin's sundresses and cardigans. like, look at these shots

and like. okay. a fucking gold(-colored metal) and pearl cardigan clasp? a fucking cardigan clasp? something specifically made to keep your cardigan on your shoulders when you wear it like a capelet? a thing that is only necessary when you refuse to wear your cardigan like a cardigan because your nice crisp dress has bishop sleeves that puff a little at the wrist.

bev's clothes are substantially nicer than any of the parents', and also definitely nicer quality than erin's (and better-fitted! her clothes often have more structure to them, whereas erin's comparable dresses are usually slouchier and more likely to be knit and/or just plain less substantial fabric. these are markers of likely greater care, complexity, and quality materials going into bev's clothing).

even mildred at her most stylish (from a lifetime of accumulated clothing she clearly takes pride in, no less!) isn't quite on the level of pearl and gold cardigan clasp. bev is embezzling without a doubt. she is not solely responsible for crockett island's decline, but she is absolutely hastening it.

*although actually it is noticeable that bev favors long, usually pleated skirts. firstly bc these are in my experience harder to find in big box stores than your average thinnish maxidress (my one, treasured ankle length pleated wool skirt was very reasonably priced at forty dollars from the thrift store**, and I have never seen its like sold firsthand), and secondly because bev's style very much reads to me as the Women Should Never Wear Pants flavor of American fundamentalism. obviosuly that strain of fundie is Protestant, not Catholic, and I dont know if Catholicism has an equivalent flavor, but the fact that she Literally Never Wears Pants combined with the determinedly modest long skirts and high collars combined with the insufferable self-righteousness reads that way to me.

**I know. it's my most expensive thrift by far but a comparable quantity of just the wool fabric was fifty dollars three years ago.

Unit 1 Blog Post

Growing up in a big city like Toronto, it can sometimes feel like nature is distant or hard to access, with urban life dominating the landscape. But through activities like helping my parents garden, walking through the local ravine, sailing on Lake Ontario, and participating in Girl Guides, I found my own small slices of the natural world. Some of my earliest memories are of turning over rocks in my backyard, excitedly discovering worms and insects, collecting interesting rocks until my pockets were weighed down because I couldn’t choose just one, and catching frogs at a lake close my grandparents' house in Collingwood. These moments, often encouraged by my parents, gave me a personal connection to nature, even amidst the city’s bustle. They became my own little pockets of wonder, where I could explore and feel a sense of belonging.

These experiences shaped my early understanding of the world and cultivated a sense of place, where nature was always a source of comfort and joy. However, as I moved into high school, my relationship with nature was not as highly prioritized. With the demands of academics, extracurricular activities, and a growing social life, I engaged with nature significantly less. Nature felt like something in the background, a passive part of my surroundings, rather than an active component of my life. 

It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that I found my way back to nature. With the world coming to a standstill, I began to seek solace in the outdoors again. During lockdown, hiking trails, walks around my neighborhood, and time spent in my backyard became my go-to activities. Prioritizing my connection with nature not only offered comfort but also reconnected me with my childhood passion for understanding the outdoors, sparking a renewed sense of curiosity and purpose.

This reconnection to nature changed everything for me. It led me to pursue a degree in ecology, which has allowed me to not only understand the natural world on a more scientific level but also to interact with and appreciate it more than ever before. Last fall, I even had the opportunity to teach outdoor education at Scarborough Outdooe Education School (SOES) just outside of Algonquin Park, sharing my love for nature with students and helping them find their own connections to the world around them.

As an avid traveler, I seek out nature and cultural interpreters in every place I visit. This has allowed me to learn about wildlife in the Maasai Mara, Kenya, witness the northern lights in Kiruna, Sweden, and hike mountains in Interlaken, Switzerland, among many other adventures. Each experience continues to shape the way I see the world and my place within it.

Nearly 30 HISD schools have COVID-19 in their wastewater, public health officials say - Published Aug 30, 2024

Public health officials detected COVID-19 in the wastewater of two-thirds of HISD schools two weeks into the start of the new school year, Houston Health Department officials said.

The department detected the disease in 29 of the 45 schools monitored as part of the department’s Wastewater Monitoring Dashboard. Dr. Jeanna White, deputy health authority for the Houston Health Department, said that COVID-19 levels have begun to plateau in recent weeks, but residents should remain alert and seek treatment if they experience any symptoms.

“For the past couple weeks, our wastewater numbers have been leveling out, meaning they’re not increasing,” White said. “But that’s not to say that people shouldn’t pay attention to their personal risks and health concerns. … If you have risks, comorbid conditions or just think you’re showing symptoms, you should still seek treatment immediately.”

The department’s wastewater dashboard, which tracks the presence of COVID-19 in the city’s sewer water, does appear to have evened out over the past month. Since late June, the viral load — defined as the number of viral pieces that entered a water treatment plant on a given day — has hovered around 300, less than half of the city-wide high reached in early 2022.

The dashboard displays data relative to July 2020. As of Aug. 19, the Houston Health Department reported COVID-19 levels to be just under three times those recorded in 2020. While this may seem alarming, data collected from wastewater treatment facilities is only a small part of the greater picture, White said.

“When you’re dealing with wastewater, you have to think about what data you’re capturing,” White said. “There are a host of factors that can skew data one way or another. If there was a concert or other big event, you might see a spike. Part of the reason we started looking at schools is because it provides an extra level of granularity to the data.”

School wastewater provides a more narrow sample that is largely limited to residents and families, White said. This can help eliminate outliers in the form of conventions and other events that bring people to the city.

But data shows some areas have fared better than others. Kingwood, for example, currently sits at a staggering 1800% of the viral load detected in 2020. That’s despite having just a fraction of Houston’s population.

Rebecca Schneider, a staff analyst for the Houston Health Department, said there are a host of factors that can result in higher COVID-19 numbers for certain regions. In particular, areas like Kingwood that had lower levels at the start of the pandemic tend to produce more alarming figures when upticks occur.

“You have to keep in mind that this is in comparison to July 2020. Places that had lower levels then might look really, really bad in 2024,” Schneider said. “With that in mind, Kingwood is one of the few areas where we are seeing an increase in the disease.”

Looking forward, White said the Houston Health Department will continue monitoring COVID-19 levels across the city and take appropriate action as needed. For the time being, residents should continue to take basic precautions to guard themselves from the disease.

Parents of students who attend schools where COVID-19 was recently detected should be on the lookout for any symptoms and seek treatment as needed. White said it’s important that parents keep their children at home if they believe they might be sick.

“It’s all about just maintaining those best practices,” White said. “Cover your cough, cover your sneeze, use hand sanitizer and distance yourself when you’re sick or you have a fever. The best tool against COVID-19 is prevention.”

Because it's me and I love story and I know Texas ren faires (I used to work at Scarborough for those in DFW!), Joel lived close to the largest ren faire in the world, the Texas Renaissance Festival! It's a fall faire just outside Houston, and I'm assuming that's where he'd go. MAYBE Sherwood? But probably TRF so that's where I'm going to be sending the pre-outbreak and no-outbreak Joels :)

Here are my Ren Faire HCs!

Lavender: Joel and Doc definitely took Sarah to TRF at least once. Sarah and Doc got matching flower garlands and the knight gave Sarah the token at the joust. Everyone got their own turkey leg even though Joel was very skeptical that Sarah could eat one by herself. Joel ends up eating all of his and half of Sarah's because she can't finish. Sarah falls asleep on the drive home and Joel keeps looking over at Doc with the flowers in her hair and a little smile on her face while her fingers are laced with his in the glow of the streetlights. When he carries Sarah inside and tucks her into bed, Doc calls him her knight in shining armor and she has to stifle a laugh when he damn near tackles her before taking her to bed.

Yearling: Savvy finds a book that talks about renaissance faires and she asks Ellie about them. "Fuck if I know, dude" is all Ellie has to say. So they take the question to Joel and Bambi. Joel's like "Took Sarah to one of those once... kinda weird but she loved it." Bambi gets a good laugh out of it and says "Yeah, there was one of these not too far from me when I was a kid. I went with some friends in high school once, almost got kicked out for drinking too much. They wouldn't let me try jousting though..." Savvy gets a little hung up on the idea in that way teenaged girls sometimes do so Joel organizes a little Jackson renaissance faire. The more theatrical kids put on a show, Julia makes flower crowns with the girls, he convinces Bambi to play some period-appropriate music with him. Jousting isn't really possible because without the armor you're just going to get hurt but Olivia helps coordinate some contests for the best riders in town (minus Bambi because that's just unfair.) Everyone has a great time. It becomes an annual thing.

New in Town: Beautiful has never been to a ren faire. "You're shittin' me," Joel just looks at her. "Not ever?" "Nope," she says. "Kind of thought they were a kid thing. Aren't they a kid thing?" He smiles a little. "There's kid stuff but... trust me, every time I brought Sarah there, the grown ups were having more fun than the kids." So they go to TRF and Joel insists on getting Beautiful a corset and then kind of regrets it because holy shit now he has to look at her looking like that without anywhere to sneak off and fuck her. They go to the rowdiest shows and when she gets tipsy, she whispers in his ear "You sure there's nowhere around here you can fuck me?" Joel immediately gets on his phone and books the nearest open hotel room. They fuck like crazy and decide to go back to the faire the next morning and see the rest of it.

Halcyon: Joel and Goldie definitely went to TRF when they were teenagers. She would have dragged him and he would have had even more fun than her. She'd think it was because of the corsets. It's really because he could see how happy she was and dammit, it's hard to get better than that for Joel. So they decide to take Sarah for old time's sake. Sarah and Goldie wear peasant skirts and shirts and at faire Sarah gets a cloak that she PROMISES to wear for part of her Halloween costume that year and Joel catches Goldie eyeballing a particularly beautiful corset. He convinces her to try it on. "C'mon, live a little woman." So she does and she looks so good in it he forgets how to speak for a moment and she says "Sorry, I know, it's dumb..." "No!" He almost yells it before he clears his throat. "No, it's... really not dumb, Goldie Girl. Looks really nice on you, you should get it." He tries not to stare at her all day in it but he definitely fails. She asks him for help getting out of the corset when they go back to the car later and his hands shake a little as he unlaces her.

The Savage and the Sanctuary: Ellie hears about the festival from a classmate and begs to go. "There are swords, Sissy. SWORDS." And Joel tries not to groan and Reader just smiles, realizing this is just another way to annoy him. "Well, you heard her. There are swords." So they go. Ellie is obsessed with the weaponry. Reader lets her pick out a sword to take home. Joel's head is on a swivel the whole time but Reader's baseball cap and sunglasses disguise have actually helped her fly under the radar here. So many people are looking at the elaborate garb on other patrons that she's largely ignored. She does get one or two "Has anyone ever told you that you look just like..." and she cuts them off with a laugh and goes "Yeah, I get that a lot. Not sure why, she's WAY prettier." Joel tries to not like how happy Ellie and Reader look because that would mean he cares and he shouldn't care. Fuck caring. The traffic to get out of the parking lot at the end of the day looks miserable so Reader lets Joel drive. He hates that she still wins because of it.

• born in Scarborough on 19/01/1875 (though she doesn't know her birthplace)

• Wand: cedar wood, dragon heartstring, slightly springy, ten and three-quarter inches

• Patronus: Graphorn (surprise!)

• I believe in the headcanon that if she was an animagus, she would turn into a fox (as a child, she often wandered alone through fields and meadows, and sometimes foxes would follow her, but she was never afraid of them – it was more like they were looking out for her)

• she is a Ravenclaw

→ the sorting hat took a long time deciding whether to place her in Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw

→ she is not the typical bookworm; she learns more from practical experience, which is why she adapted well to Sharp's class from the start

→ Elaine is quiet but friendly and helpful and possesses a high degree of empathy (which is also her greatest weakness and often leads her to put the needs of others before her own)

→ although she is quiet and reserved, she is quick-witted and knows how to use sarcasm.

→ she is very good at drawing, kept all her drawings but has given it up for a reason she doesn't want to talk about

Happy 78th Birthday Kenneth Cranham the Scottish film, television, radio and stage actor.

Kenneth, in my opinion is one of the most recognisable faces in acting, he was born in Dunfermline in 1944  to Margaret McKay Ferguson Cranham spent his early years in Lochgelly, Fife. 

He didn’t meet his father, who was in the army, until he was 18-months-old as the country had tried to avoid the mass unemployment that happened after end of the First World War and he was sent off to Africa.

When he was approaching school age the family moved to Camberwell, south London, where he said and shared a bedroom with my parents from the ages of four to 10.

Kenneth started acting at school and was lucky enough to get a paying job before he even left school, with a part in a radio play. His first big break came when he played the part of Noah Claypole on the musical Oliver! in 1966, since then it seems he has hardly been out of work, from Z Cars, Softly, Softly Task force and Danger UXB in the 70’s,  Brideshead Revisited, Reilly: Ace of Spies and his most famous part as the title role in Shine on Harvey Moon, Heart of the High Country, Inspector Morse, Boon in the 80’s and Minder, Heartbeat and Kavanagh QC in the 90’s it is fair to say most of his acting credits have been on the small screen.

Cranham however has acted alongside some heavyweight cinema stars including Tom Cruise in Valkyrie, Angelina Jolie in Maleficent and Daniel Craig in Layer Cake. Horror fans will also know him as Dr. Philip Channard in the second Hellraiser film. More up to date he was in Hatton Garden a four-part drama based on the notorious cash and jewellery burglary.

To show you how prolific Kenneth Cranham has been, IMDB say he has clocked up at least 200 acting jobs, that’s over different genres,  he also finds time to tread the boards and he won a prestigious  2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in The Father. His latest roles have been in the UK TV series  Scarborough and The Good Karma Hospital another TV series set in a coastal town in tropical South India. 2022 saw him appear in the J K Rowling penned  C.B. Strike

Although he moved away from Scotland at a young age Kenneth says:

 “I had a whole Scottish existence until we moved to London when I was four.

“I feel at home in Scotland and go back whenever I can.

It’s been MANY years since I was in high school, so I was hesitant that it would flow naturally but the response was great. Honestly got overwhelmed by the reception from chapter 1 and had to crush so many insecurities to write chapter 2.

Definitely Let’s Try This Again Maybe it’s because it’s a gift but it’s the only fic of mine I can read back and enjoy.

Unit 2: Teaching Learners

When thinking about my ideal role as an interpreter, I was reminded of Freeman Tilden’s ideas of interpretation, as described in the textbook. The most fundamental ingredient for an interpreter to have, according to Tilden, is love for the place and love for the visitors. With that in mind, I began to think about the places I already know and love when envisioning the place of my ideal role. Immediately, my choice came to mind: The Guild Inn, in Scarborough Ontario.

The Guild Inn is best described as a menagerie of history, culture, nature, art, and community. Though their website is largely aimed at advertising it as a wedding venue (it is much more than that!) feel free to take a look here.

I grew up very close to the Guild Inn. Take my high school experience as context; the statues scattered throughout the park were not only the subject of photographs for my grade 11 photography class, but also the seats of students during lunch hour! Throughout my childhood, my family and I attended markets and showcases that employed this site as a venue, and took walks down the wooded area towards the rocky Lake Ontario entry point. I’ve included photos below to bring colour to my story.

I would pick this location to interpret because I care about it, and already have a good foundation on its history. Even now, I can think of a few fun facts I would use to get certain audiences engaged…for example, did you know Drake filmed a music video here?😊

Regarding what my interpretive program would entail, I imagine I would take visitors through the different parts of the area (statues, buildings, forest, lake), detailing the history as we go. Though, interpretive programs should not just be a regurgitation of information. They must also include activities, strategic silence, purposeful selection of locations, encouragement of provocation, and development of a theme that underlies the entire program.

I would be sure incorporate a variety of activities that are engaging for different types of learners. For example, I may have a kinesthetic activity that is most appropriate for kinesthetic learners, but a healthy challenge for auditory learners. In an activity that follows, perhaps it would be most appropriate for auditory learners, but a healthy challenge for kinesthetic learners. What is best for me may not be best for others, and what is best for one visitor in the group may not be best for the rest – what matters is that there is something for everyone, and that if comfort zones are pushed, it is gentle, intentional, respectful, and mindful.

Another important skill I would like to possess is adaptability. Rather than following a strict script, I would get to know the visitors as we move along and accommodate their intentions. As the constructivist approach tells us, each visitor brings unique constructs of knowledge and values to a program, and new information gets incorporated into these like flies into a spider’s web. It would be my goal to sense visitors’ constructs, and deliver my program in a way that is meaningful to each individual.

And through that, I would then not only have love for the place, but grow love for the visitors as well.
