MANTI i need to know what your favourite recording of tam lin is pleasseeeee
okay SO my absolute favourite rendition of Tam Lin is by folk artist S.J. Tucker/her band Tricky Pixie. It is available on zero streaming services, though the MP3s are on their bandcamp, BUT people have posted many shitty camcorder videos of the song being preformed and they have my whole heart. I have this video downloaded to my laptop in case YouTube ever nukes it. It has so much energy? And is so dynamic? good stuff

I also really love Anais Mitchell's recording, even though the way she sings is... an aquired taste (I'm so sorry Ms. Mitchell this is a problem with me and not with you, thank u for giving us Hadestown)

ALSO also the Glasgow Reel, an Irish fiddle reel, is sometimes called Tam Lin! (i do not know why. i have attempted to research this. i am admittedly not very good at research) It is not an answer to your question but it's such a funky tune so here's my favourite version of that!

that is all thank u Julia for bothering me <3
#warning to my fellow christians Tricky Pixie leans kinda pagan/witchy#which yk makes some sense when we're talking about folk music#but they make BANGER tunes#anyway I love Tam Lin sm#I had a phase in high school where I was like “huh I wonder if Scarborough Fair is really a folk song?”#(it was)#and then I went down a rabbithole of folk ballads from the British isles#I was combing thru scans of crusty PDFs of the child ballads#i was following broken links to find different permutations of folk songs#my little sister has Ewan MacCall's elfin knight memorized#because I would sing it to her to calm down her meltdowns#idk what happened but I have strange knowledge of some folk ballads now! crazy#anyways#folklore#asks
