steddie empath soulmate au
When Steve was younger, he had trouble separating what he was feeling from what he wasn’t. A lot of people do at that age. When you can tap into another person’s emotions, it’s hard to know the difference between theirs and your own.
In school, they give a very quick, very unhelpful lesson on soulmates - only really saying what kids have heard on their own anyway. It’s unspoken that you’re supposed to learn about that kind of thing from your parents - and most of his peers did.
In his house though, mentioning your soulmate was discouraged. Steve was expected to have a hold over his emotions and just know what it took other kids years and the help of their parents to learn. He was supposed to have a wall. He was supposed to be able to shut the door on his own. He was to know the difference between what he was feeling and what he wasn’t. And for all his parents knew, he did all of that from a young age.
What Steve had done from a young age was learn how to hide what he was and wasn’t feeling. Like right now. Right now he’s giving his date a ride home from Lucas’ championship game while simultaneously feeling the most scared he both has and hasn’t ever felt.
He thinks now he understands better what people mean when they say you can just tell when your feelings aren’t your own. For the first time in his life, Steve knows immediately that this emotion doesn’t belong to him. For one, there’s no reason he should be scared to death while driving Brenda home, and he hasn’t felt this scared since July. For two, there is absolutely no way there’s alternate dimension shit happening right now. That shit is supposed to be over with. Then again, that’s what they’ve thought since that first time with the Demogorgon, too. That time also happens to be the first time he felt fear like this.
It’s such a crash from the high he’s been riding all evening. Everything was exciting and good for a few hours there.
With shaky hands, he pulls up in front of Brenda’s parent’s house. He can tell that she’s trying to make conversation, maybe expecting more from the end of their night - but he can hardly focus enough to make himself seem at least a little bit like he’s not about to cry. He stumbles his way through a goodbye, not knowing what’s happening and before he knows it he’s alone.
Usually, Steve would walk her to the door and probably make a move on her. At the very least he’d watch to make sure she got in safe, but right now he drives away the second the passenger door closes.
He feels an overwhelming urgency to go go go. And he does. Steve drives faster than he ever has - barring the time he saw Billy’s Camaro speeding towards Nancy’s station wagon and t-boned the boy without a second thought.
He gets home, and for the first time in months, he opens his trunk and takes out his nail-bat. He makes quick work of getting inside his house and locking the door, looking over his shoulder the entire time. He goes around the whole house making sure all the doors and windows are locked. When he’s checking the back door - the one that leads out to the pool, he hesitates, eyes lingering on the woods that line his yard.
Before ‘83 - before Barb - Steve wasn’t afraid of much. He felt like he was on top of the world and like nothing could bring him down. Now, though, he only goes to the backyard to complete the yard maintenance expected from him by his parents.
Steve knows that locking the place up won’t fend off a Demogorgan - that thing came right out of the Byers’ wall, no door necessary - but it makes him feel the tiniest bit better, more secure.
He makes his way upstairs and stumbles through getting ready for bed - as if he’ll be getting any sleep tonight.
He knows, okay? He knows that these probably aren’t his feelings and that there’s no need to be this revved up, but he can feel it. His heart is pounding and he knows deep in his bones that he isn’t safe.
It’s not until he lies in bed that an immense sense of grief and guilt flows over him. Steve curls up, pulling his knees to his chest, and tries not to cry.

Sebastian michaelis x demon/vampire butler reader? Omegaverse perhaps?
Title: a bit bitey
Fandom:black butler
Characters: Ciel, Sebastian
Fic type: fluff, omegaverse, suggestive content
Pairings:
Warnings: male reader, reader insert, omegaverse, fluff, suggestive themes, vampire reader
Notes: IM BAAAAAACK >:)
Summary: Reader is a vampire who drinks the blood of alphas who fall for his charms and gets mistaken for Jack the Ripper and gets chased by Sebastian and offered a position be can't refuse
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
It was said that when a demon bedded a witch that it would create something truly unholy that would walk the earth craving human flesh, unable to touch the sun.
It's why (name) found his home in London, a lovely home with his centuries accumulated wealth and all his trinkets over the years scattered around, like a museum of his immortality.
"I was so hungry..." (Name) Sighed, the Omega watching as the man dropped to the ground, body drained of all blood and (name) licked his lips, a bit of blood on his top lip. A sense of euphoria washed over the Omega who let out a sigh before stepping over the dead alpha, seeing a wanted poster for Jack the Ripper, whoever that guy was sure made feedings easy...
It was the dead of night, no one really in the streets and the oil lamps lighting his path home, a pep in his step and soft humming could be heard.
He was always so happy after a good feeding.
"There he is! Sebastian, get him!" A child's voice could be heard and (name) turned to lock eyes with a deep red pair... A demon.
(Name) Immediately bolted, the young blue eyed boy going into his carriage to wait while his demon stalked down the street.
Running through alleyways and corners, (name) was thankful for his speed and lack of footsteps, slipping into his bedroom door and closing it with a sigh.
Safe.
"Fu--" (name) was pinned to the ground by the black haired alpha, arms pinned to his side "you know, people would typically take one on a romantic stroll or maybe a dinner before doing something like this" (name) snarled at the alpha who wasn't even remotely phased "you have been causing problems..." Sebastian said casually, eyeing the Omega who huffed "I'm simply having dinner" (name) didn't particularly care for the humans, really seeing them as food "you killed five prostitutes"
Huh?
"My apologies but I don't pursue other omegas" (name) said simply "I pursue alphas, they're easier" Sebastian stared him down, looking for any trade if a lie but when he found nothing he let go of his wrists but stayed on the vampires hips "is there anything else I can assist you with Sbeastian?" Remembering the name the boy called the demon "are you looking for employment?" Sebastian asked curiously, (name) raising an eyebrow at the question.
"What are you on about?"
"I can offer you something, an exchange"
"What could you possibly offer me?"
"Demon blood in exchange for employment" (name) didn't need money, he didn't need items or anything material as he lived for centuries and had an Elizabethan era outfit in a chest in the attic of his home. "You are willing to give me your blood?" (Name)s eyes were blown out while moving to touch the others cold neck, right around his jugular "no more attacking humans, work under me and you get demonic blood" demonic blood was like a fine wine to a vampire, addictive and delicious.
Sebastian could smell the omegas pharamones even when masked, biting his lips "do you know what you're asking of me, alpha?"
"I am well aware of what in asking, Omega" Sebastian whispered, getting closer to the other "I'm half human, do you think you can handle my mortal emotions? I am very high maintenance" (name) didn't flinch, the twos lips barely touching and eyes locking "I think I can manage, humans are needy creatures"
"Half human"
"Ah yes, like a mutt"
(Name) Glared "my my what a charmer, can you please kindly get your flat bottom off me alpha?" (Name) Batted his eyes "don't you have your child to tend to?"
"Do you accept my offer?"
"I suppose I will become your mate..." (Name) Huffed, looking at the alpha who was now his mate "my heat is in two weeks, I will be having it here and I will be keeping my residence for such matters or if you annoy me too much"
Sebastian silently chuckled at the Omega he chose, a snarky vampire who didn't care for silly human traditions on being an Omega.
This was going to be fun.

I GOT A NEW CAR
Everybody meet the new baby that i will never shut up about forever!
Tumblr media
This is Clifford the Third, my new 1996 Nissan Pickup!! I probably paid too much for her but given that I live in Massachusetts and she has virtually no rust I’m okay with that lol.
So a brief history of the Nissan Pickup! These trucks were released in the US in 1985 and were sold through 1997, when they were replaced with the Frontier. They were the successor to the beloved Datsun 720, which had been in production since 1979. They are in fact just called the Pickup! They’re colloquially known as the D21 - their chassis code, and the Hardbody, because of the double walled durable construction of the trucks’ bed.
Tumblr media
The D21 was available with a couple different engines and drivetrain layouts. Mine is a 4x4 with the KA24 motor (which it shared with the 240SX/Silvia). She’s also a King Cab, meaning she has a slightly elongated wheelbase to allow for two small inwards facing jump seats in the back of the cab. Still a two door though.
Tumblr media
AND SHE’S A STICK! She has a 5-speed manual transmission, and it’s the best transmission i’ve ever personally had in a car. She’s my third manual, the other two being a 1999 Toyota Corolla and a 2004 Subaru WRX, both of which were great but the Corolla had a really sloppy gearbox that felt incredibly vague at times, whereas the WRX had a sportier transmission that was pretty unforgiving and stiff. This one is definitive about where each gear is, but also won’t get too jerky or loud if you shift a little early or late.
Nissan Hardbody trucks are known and loved for their durability, versatility, and simplicity. They’re super bare bones but what they do have is built remarkably well and meant to withstand lots of abuse. If they don’t rust and have basic maintenance kept up it’s not uncommon for them to go 300k+ miles with minimal issues. Mine has around 184k miles, high but manageable. She also has a few modifications from the previous owner, namely a straight piped exhaust (no muffler, just one big long aluminum tube), aftermarket bumpers and lights, locking hubs, and a small lift. The guy i bought it from had plans to make it an off-roader but had too many projects and needed to offload one to make space in his driveway.
While many people either take these off-roading or turn them into drift trucks, my plan is to bring her back to mostly stock. I’m in the process of tracking down OEM bumpers and a more typical cat-back (from the catalytic converter back) exhaust system so she’s a little less obnoxiously loud. Since i mostly just need reliable transport more than a toy and she is now my sole car, I want to just make her relatively normal. But I love her a lot and am happy to be able to share!

it’s your birthday and you weren’t expecting your husband to do anything for you. he usually forgets and then buys you an expensive present weeks later, out of guilt, but tonight, he promised to take you out for dinner. after getting your makeup done professionally and dressing to the nines in a tight black dress and sleek black louboutins you head to the restaurant he told you to meet him at. after waiting for hours, you decide to go home where you find him pumping into a gorgeous woman, who you later on find out, is his secretary. you silently head to your walk in closet, pack your bags, and head to your range rover in the garage. with tears streaming down your cheeks, you call patrick after settling in a suite at a nearby five star hotel. wall street patrick immediately cancels his dinner meeting with a major potential client and speeds down the highway.
after arriving at the hotel, he finds your bare faced with your glasses on, wearing a silk nightgown and some fuzzy slippers. for a moment he’s taken aback. you always look so high maintenance and put together but to him this is the most beautiful you have ever looked – puffy eyes, pouty lips, wet lashes and all. you look up at him and beg him to hold you. he rushes to the couch you are seated on and lets you cry on his armani suit. he doesn’t care that you’re getting tears and snot on it. seeing you so comfortable and vulnerable around him makes his dick painfully hard. all he cares about is being there for you and probably ordering a hit on your soon to be ex husband tbh.
after you fall asleep on his chest he gently carries you to the bedroom, kissing your temple before tucking you in to sleep. you awaken from your short nap and ask him to sleep with you, it’s been so long since someone slept next to you, and he almost cums in his pants, the thought of you asking him to sleep with you consumes his mind, but after taking off his suit and washing up, he lays in bed with his undershirt and his boxers. he apologizes for not having any clothes with him because he doesn’t want to make you uncomfortable or scare you off but you jokingly reply “usually i sleep naked…you’re fine”. being in his boxers, it gets harder for him to hide his thick bulge.
it’s 2am in the morning and patrick startles awake. you’re talking in your sleep and he’s worried. you’re having a nightmare…or so he thinks. you’re whimpering and moaning and he thinks it’s so hot. poor baby hasn’t been fucked right in so long, the only action she gets is in her dreams. he giggles a little until he hears you moan his name. to him, it sounds like a choir of angels singing the most divine melody to ever exist. he ends up rushing to the bathroom and spitting into his hand to take care of his problem.
you wake up to shlick shlick sounds and groaning in the bathroom. could patrick be touching himself? he forgot to close the door all the way and you could peep into the bathroom through the crack. you probably shouldn’t, it would make you a bad friend, but ever since the first day you saw him, a part of you has wanted to sit on his cock and fuck yourself through an orgasm. you slowly walk towards the door and see him in the shower, sniffing the used panties you left in the bathroom while furiously stroking his giant veiny cock. it looks so scary with its angry red tip but your mouth starts watering. you rush back to bed feeling guilty for overstepping boundaries and for wanting to gag on your friend’s dick while rubbing your clit. patrick on the other hand, being a calculating master manipulator left the door open to make sure you would hear him and see him, hoping that he would have the same effect on you, that you have on him.
- alien anon
so I need to touch myself .

1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback
1969 was, effectively, the final year for the Shelby Mustang. By now assembly had shifted in Michigan from California where it was contracted out to A.O. Smith Corporation. Smith, an established Motor City contractor, had brought a level of serious manufacturing skill, supplier management, procedure and standards never seen at Shelby’s facility where LAX met the vibrant (and sometimes extreme) subculture of Venice, California.
Now largely designed and specified by Ford staffers, the 1969 Shelby Mustang was drastically different visually from the standard Mustangs, with a completely different nose and grille, a wide rectangular opening with blacked out grille flanked by 7” headlights and with Shelby’s characteristic driving lights now smaller rectangular pieces below the attractive, but largely ineffective, bumper. The special Shelby hood had five ducts, three NACA-style surface ducts replaced the complicated but entertaining shaker hoods of years gone by to supply cold air directly to the engine air intake and two extractors at the back of the hood relieving underhood pressure and exhausting heated air in front of the windshield.
A surface duct behind the headlights and a scoop behind the door and in front of the rear wheel arch that was ducted to the rear brakes continued the performance theme. The rear panel was completely different from the Mustang, housing a set of 1965 Thunderbird sequential taillights with the rear license plate placed between them and including a small ducktail spoiler. The area under the bumper where standard Mustangs carried their license plate contained two rectangular outlets for the Shelby’s dual exhaust system. Standard wheels were unique 5-spoke Mag Stars with alloy centers and chrome steel rims.
Under the hood lay the 428 Cobra Jet which had powered the ’68 Shelby GT500KR. Both Ford and Shelby recognized the superiority of the high performance CJ and made it the standard engine for 1969’s Shelby Mustangs.
At the end of the 1969 model year 789 Shelby Mustangs were in-process at A.O. Smith. They were visually updated with black hood stripes and a chin spoiler and given new VINs. Otherwise the 1970s were exactly the same as the ‘69s making these two years essentially identical examples of the end of the Shelby Mustang series which had begun only a scant six years before.
Avidly sought by collectors and obsessively documented by the Shelby American Automobile Club, most Shelby Mustangs are well known and have well known histories. Occasionally, however, a example appears which has been out of sight for years. Even more rarely it turns out to have been little used and continuously maintained by a thoughtful and caring single owner for nearly forty years.
The Black Jade 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Sportsroof fastback offered here is one of those rare and highly desirable cars. It was delivered new to Ford’s dealer in Yokohama, Japan, Marubeni Motors K.K., and was sold thereafter to its first, and only, owner in Japan. It has been repainted in the original color once but is otherwise completely original, as delivered and has only 84,941km on its metric-calibrated export speedometer (52,779 miles.) Its sympathetic maintenance and care shows throughout in its clean, straight, rust-free condition.
Power of course comes from the 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet Ram Air V-8 engine which Ford and Shelby conservatively rated at 335 horsepower at 5,200rpm and a gut-wrenching 440 lb-ft torque at 3,400rpm. It puts the power through Ford’s highly regarded C-6 automatic transmission and Traction-Lok differential with high speed 3.00:1 gearing that takes full advantage of the CJ engine’s torque. In addition to the highly desirable drivetrain specification it is loaded with options including the Visibility Group, Goodyear white letter tires, Sport Deck folding rear seat, power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt steering column, Selectaire air conditioning, AM/8-track stereo radio, tinted glass, deluxe belts, tachometer and trip odometer.
It is finished in one of the Shelby Mustang’s most attractive colors, Black Jade. The interior and high back buckets seats are upholstered in black Clarion Knit/Corinthian vinyl that complements with Black Jade exterior.
It returned to the U.S. in 2006 but has never been titled by its current owner so it remains a one-owner car. Its absolutely clear history, one-owner provenance, highly original condition with known mileage and extensive options list are attributes shared by few Shelby Mustangs of this age. This is a rare opportunity for an astute collector to acquire a particularly significant, unmolested Shelby Mustang from the last, and most highly developed, series.

They are both breathing hard when they finally get back to the Senate.
Fox leads her through a smaller door, one that Leia, even with all her time spent in the Senate Dome has never even seen before, and pushes her into an elevator that currently has only three maintenance droids in it. They all beep at them, but quiet down when Fox shushes them. He takes the coat from Leia, while Leia starts to comb her hair open. They need to work fast, so Leia unceremoniously puts a part of her hair in her mouth, while she starts braiding another part of it.
Fox watches for a moment, before he reaches for her head.
"Same part from this side too?" He asks. Leia raises her brows at him through their reflections on the elevator's shining wall, but nods. Fox pulls his gloves off, and takes a part of her hair into his fingers, and starts to braid with surprising speed and skill, managing to match the tightness of the braid to hers closely enough when in the moving elevator. He holds the braid in place until Leia gets to tie it up, and pulls both the braids behind her head as she starts to braid the last braid on the front.
"You seem to know what you're doing", she comments, as her mouth is now free from hair.
"I braid Thorn's hair a lot", Fox answers. "And I've seen this same hairdo on your mother. The last one goes through the middle, right?"
Leia swallows, but gathers herself quickly.
"Yes", she answers, and throws the last braid over her head as well. He pulls it through and tightens it up. He's much gentler than Leia's or Mama's ladies-in-waiting, who would pull the braid so tight that Leia could feel the pull in her teeth. "Mother used to wear this when she was younger."
It was one of the braids that were easy to do, even for someone who wasn't too experienced in tying up the Royal ladie's hair, so it was many times chosen when there was, for some reason, not too much time for doing the hair to any of the more complicated upstyles. Mother had liked it when Leia had been small, especially on the days she had had more time to spend time with just Leia and father. Leia had learned to do it pretty young as well, so she could match up with mother on their days out.
Something turns and tightens inside her chest for the thought that Fox had spent enough time just looking at her mother, and paying attention to every little detail, that he knows how to do the braid without instructions. It's bittersweet, because it also makes her feel warm amidst all the turmoil. He has paid enough attention to her mother to know how to braid hair.
Fox backs away a bit, and hums.
"Looks neat enough", he says, and starts to pull his gloves back on. "Deep breaths. We're there in just a moment."
Leia has just enough time to touch her hair and turn around, when the elevator stops and beeps, and the doors open. Fox holds the coat for one of the droids.
"Put this into trash", he tells it. The droid beeps, opens its compartment and stuffs the coat in, and then wheels out after the two other droids. Fox steps out first and glances around, and then waves for Leia to follow.
"I'm going to take the maintenance door, and go up to the next floor", he tells her as they walk down the corridor. "Go straight from here, and take the elevator on the right side of the hall. I'll be there."
Leia nods. She brushes her fingers against his, and he curls his fingers around them briefly before they part ways.
Leia holds her head high and walks without looking around, to the end of the corridor and through the next door, and she crosses the hall on the other side without anyone stopping to even look at her. She steps into the elevator, and puts herself into the corner in the back, behind a few other Senators and aides. She recognises a couple of them. It's strange, every time, to see people she has known all her life, but who now have no idea who she is.
The doors start to beep, but before they can close, Padmé Amidala steps in, and behind her is Anakin Skywalker.
Leia's heart slams to a stop, before she can control herself.
Deep breaths, Fox had just said to her. Deep breaths.
She breathes, and stares at the spot on the wall, trying to keep any unsavory thoughts out of her head. She had done it before, while being in the same room with him, while he was watching her cry in pain he was inflicting upon her.
He is just standing there now, not looking at her. She is safe. She is safe.
The elevator starts to move. Leia breathes in, and thinks about anything else than her birth parents standing right there in front of her.

Sparkles
Aonung x Human!Female!Reader
Chapter Index Next →
Summary: You work as maintenance at base 36, a testing facility used for unethical experiments on captured local Na’vi. One day when the base’s power supply melts down and explodes, you’re caught in the flaming crossfire. In a split second decision, you also decide to free the panicking Na’vi in his glass cell.
Aged up!Aonung to 21 and reader is 20
Chapter 1: think fast
Mission report: Base 36 quarantined due to overheated power supply explosion. Evacuated and searching for survivors.
“No no no no,” you cried, banging on the locked door. “I can’t die like this!”
Blaring alarms wailed loudly in the empty halls, the heavy smoke in the air muting the red flashing lights. You coughed into a closed fist, feeling the uncomfortable heat raging against your back.
The center of base 36 was locked down, after the power supply had exploded and started a massive, fast traveling fire that ate up everything in its path. They had immediately closed off the affected area, assuming everyone to be dead. And everyone was dead.
Except you.
“Fuck, fuck,” you swore, speed-entering every password you could think of on the keypad keeping the door sealed shut.
Incorrect password. Incorrect password. Incorrect password.
“For fuck’s sake!” You screamed, punching the titanium with all of your strength. It didn’t even budge, but now your knuckle was bloody and bruised. Well great.
Shoving your hands into your hair, you pulled frantically at the roots. “Okay think y/n, think.”
The fire hadn’t reached you yet, but it was close. You knew that it was coming from the hall on the right, but the center of base 36 was a circular design, so pretty soon the fire would be coming from both directions. If you went left, you had a chance of being stranded in the middle of the hallway, but if you didn’t—well, you would be stranded either way.
“Shit,” you dragged a frustrated hand down your face, before turning left and sprinting as fast as you could.
The walls blurred past you as you ran, your breath and heartbeat echoing heavily in your ears. The air was thick with smoke and heat, making your abused lungs ache.
You turned a corner and suddenly shrieked, skidding ungracefully to a stop only a few inches away from a jagged metal pole. The path that you needed to follow had caved in, blocked by a wall of heavy cement and metal debris. It was impossible to cross without somehow impaling or crushing yourself.
Brrrrrrk, the base shook, a deep rumbling noise that made you grab onto the wall for support as your eyes widened.
A cloud of dust suddenly showered over you, making you slowly look up in fear.
“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” you whimpered as you watched the ceiling start to crack above you.
Cursing profusely under your breath, you jumped into a random room to your left—grunting as your abused ribs hit the ground—and just barely missing the avalanche of dust and debris that buried that floor where you stood only a second ago. Coughing, you waved away the dust as it slowly settled around you.
To your horror, the entrance was now blocked with debris too, effectively trapping you inside. Well, you thought with a sinking resignation. No turning back now.
The room you had found yourself in was very large, about the size of an aircraft hangar. It was all dark, except for the flashing red warning lights that were also present around the rest of the base. High, overarching ceilings hung above you, supported by thick metal beams. The floors were a cold, porous grey concrete. You didn’t usually have clearance to be here, so the layout was foreign to you.
“Hello?” You called out hesitantly as you picked yourself off the ground, eyes scanning hopefully for any signs of life, but to no avail. Everything was quiet and abandoned.
The further you walked into the room, the more bizarre it got. Large glass encasements lined the walls, much too large to be cells. Not when the ceilings of these things were at least fifteen feet tall.
Or maybe, it was meant to hold something much larger than a human.
You gulped, warily continuing forward. You were a maintenance worker and carrier, so you didn’t really know what they got up to in the testing facilities. You just transported the samples that the lab technicians gave you and made sure that the equipment was clean and functional.
THUMP THUMP THUMP.
The sudden, loud banging noises made you gasp, taking a few startled steps back. Glancing in the direction of the sounds, you noticed that they seemed to be coming from one of the glass encasements a little further into the room—the only one still lit up.
You gulped, leaning your back against the wall and clutching at your chest. To investigate for exits, you would need to cross the room, and to cross the room, you would need to pass in front of that thing making those disturbing noises.
In the near distance, a deafening popping noise reverberated in the hall, vibrating against the walls and rattling your teeth. Shit, the fire was too close now, you needed to act fast. The thumping noises on the glass got more insistent, frantically picking up tempo and increasing in force.
“Ha…” you exhaled, gathering what little remained of your nerve. “Okay Y/n, this is happening.”
Without a second glance behind you, you ran as fast as you could, keeping your eyes trained in front of you.
Don’t look, you chided yourself. Don’t look. Don’t look you idiot.
THA-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.
You looked, eyes shifting disobediently to your left and then…up. And higher. And they kept climbing until your neck was practically craned at a ninety degree angle, eyes wide and mouth gaping at an almost ten-foot-tall, blue humanoid figure.
“Oh, shit!” You shrieked, stumbling backwards and just nearly managing to catch yourself before you fell on your ass. “What the fuck is that?!”
The creature was male, as far as you could tell, with intricate black tattoo markings climbing up his biceps, neck and face. His hands—four fingered, you noticed in disturbance—were pressed against the glass walls of his enclosure, pointy canines protruding viciously from behind his lips as he hissed soundlessly at you.
Oh. Oh. You knew what he was. You’d heard too many horror stories from your coworkers not to recognize his monstrous features.
He was a local. A Na’vi. Apparently they were savage barbarians, mercilessly killing humans for pleasure and keeping their bones as decorations and trophies. They were no different from animals. Every single nerve in your body was screaming at you to get the hell away from it.
You gritted your teeth and sprinted past his cell, much to his visible anger and indignation. No way in hell were you going to let that thing out. You weren’t planning to die any earlier than you had to, thank you very much.
Thump.
That one was softer, sounding almost defeated. It made you pause, not able to stop yourself from glancing back over your shoulder curiously.
It—he had his head resting against the glass, fist slowly sliding down the surface. His other hand clutched reverently at what looked like a shark tooth pendant around his neck, lips moving quickly as if he was muttering desperate prayers under his breath.
Oh, no. No no no. Was that a shred of guilt you were feeling, Y/n? Banish the thought.
But…the more you looked at him, the less he seemed like a mindless barbarian who would enjoy ripping you limb from limb until you were just a bloody stump with a head, and the more he looked like—well, someone who was scared shitless of dying. Like you.
Another loud bang shook the base, gnawing at your conscience uncomfortably. The place where his eyebrows should have been furrowed, a painfully resigned expression contorting his face.
Shit. You were going to do something very, very stupid, weren’t you?
“You better not kill me, you stupid blue yeti,” you grumbled under your breath, running back towards his cell.
His head lifted when he saw you approaching, large blue eyes narrowed in confusion.
“Yeah, yeah,” you grimaced. “I’m back, don’t get too excited.”
Now you just had to figure out how to work technology you’d never seen in your life.
Frantically you scanned the complex control panel on the wall, your heart dropping as you stared helplessly at all of the different colorful buttons and switches. Of course it couldn’t be simple.
“Oh come on,” you moaned in despair, pulling at the roots of your hair. “Have you people never heard of labels before?!”
You felt his eyes boring into you as you nervously started pushing, turning and flipping random controls. So far, you’d managed to brighten the lights in his cell, play some music (—move your body like a hologram—), and activate a large gust of air that blasted him right in the face, messing up his hair. That earned you a stink eye.
“Oh, shut up, I’m trying!” You hissed anxiously at him, even though you were pretty sure that the glass was sound resistant so he couldn’t actually hear you, much less understand you.
All of a sudden, the metal frames of the entrance to the room started creaking loudly, grating on your eardrums like nails on a chalkboard. You looked on in horror as they began to cave in from the sheer intensity of the heat. The fire had finally caught up.
The Na’vi’s hands pressed insistently against the glass, staring down at you wide-eyed with a look that you knew meant hurry the fuck up, stupid human.
At this point you were just full on slapping and elbowing anything you could reach. “Come on!” You pleaded frantically as a wave of heat made a sheen of sweat break out over your skin. “This is really cutting it close, Y/n!”
To your overwhelming relief, the sweet sound of gears whirling and clasps unhinging blessed your ears as you watched the glass door to his cell unseal with a loud whoosh and swing open. And damn, were you unprepared for how incredibly tall he was.
It literally felt like you were standing next to a museum exhibit.
You didn’t really have time to think about it though, because the fire was now starting to eat its way inside the lengthy room.
“Oh, shit,” you swore, hearing him spit something of the same tone in a foreign language you didn’t understand.
Your eyes frantically scanned the back end of the room. Most of it was just cement wall, work stations and different types of weird machinery. Behind one of the stations though, there was a bulkhead door about two feet shorter than your giant blue companion, with a wheel to seal it shut.
“There!” You exclaimed, pointing at it as you made a beeline for the handle. Grabbing onto the wheel, you pulled it counterclockwise with all of your strength. But no matter how hard you pulled, it just wouldn’t budge.
“Arghhhh!” You screamed in frustration, digging your feet into the ground as your knuckles turned white from how tightly you gripped onto the handle.
Suddenly, a large hand gripped your shoulder, shoving you harshly away. “Rikx mìso!” He hissed at you, grabbing onto the wheel himself and pulling.
The rusty wheel creaked loudly as it began to turn from the sheer amount of brute force exerted on it.
“Any time now,” you tittered nervously as the heat on your back started to become painfully hot. You could now see the intense waves of heat in the air, distorting your vision like an unfocused camera lens.
The Na’vi huffed, turning it even harder, and soon enough the lock unclamped with a few clicks, leaving the watertight door to swing wide open. Both of you lunged inside, with him slamming and resealing the door behind you just as a station exploded violently nearby, the flames chasing at your heels.
“Oh my god!” You shrieked, stumbling back and falling into a cold wall. The bulkhead door had led into what looked like a decently sized storage room. Rebreathers hung on the walls, as well as protective gear that you knew the excursion division used. You didn’t really get to analyze much more than that though, because to your absolute horror, the door creaked ominously in front of you, warping from the intense heat that it was not meant to withstand.
“Shit!” Your eyes widened as you staggered away, almost tripping over your feet in your haste. You needed to get out of here now.
You ran to the sealed exit door, pushing on it in frustration. “No,” you cried when it refused to open, tears welling up in your eyes. “No, not now! Please.”
Your heart sunk further when you noticed the keypad next to the door, identical to the one you were trying to unlock earlier. You were right back to where you started.
Taking a few steps back, you stared numbly at the floor. This was it, then? This was how you were going to die.
The Na’vi ran up beside you, pounding desperately on the exit door, but you knew it wouldn’t budge. It was locked, sealed shut and made of titanium alloy like all of the other doors you’d discovered lining the edges of the base ever since it had been quarantined. The only way to open it was with the code. A code that you didn’t have clearance for.
“It’s not going to work,” you told him, staring at the concrete blankly. “Even if you fired a bullet at that thing, it wouldn’t even dent.”
He didn’t seem to listen to you, still pounding furiously at the reinforced metal. When that didn’t work, he let out a deep, guttural yell, turning to you with anger in his eyes.
Storming up to you, he grabbed the collar of your shirt, lifting you up to his eye level and sneering in your face. Your breath stuttered in fear as you stared into his deep, sea blue irises. They were much more vivid up close, mixed with swirling flecks of green and gold.
They pierced into your soul, burning with rage and fear but most of all, they burned with an unwavering defiance. In that moment, you understood perfectly what he was trying to tell you.
“Okay,” you found yourself nodding slowly. “We can try.”
He set you down, and you both got to work, scouring the room for anything that would possibly help you escape. The only light source in the room was the setting sun through two tiny polycarbonate glass windows to your left and right, and a measly flickering pot light above you.
You patted desperately at the walls, wrenching ration packs off of shelves, and ripping open closet doors. So far you'd found food, hunting knives, folded clothes, some rifles, camo backpacks, rebreather masks, a water filtering kit and a pair of boots. Nothing that would help you bust down the door though.
It looked like your companion wasn't having much luck either, although he seemed much more wary of the items he found, almost like he was confused and nervous to even touch them.
Creaaaaaak.
The door groaned behind you, parts of the metal starting to dent inward and blister. Shit shit shit. There was no more time, it was going to blow.
You stumbled over to the Na'vi, tugging on his leg until he looked down at you. "There's no time," you said, eyes wide with urgency. "We need to hide."
He glanced back at the sealed exit, before looking back down at you. He huffed, following you to one of the more secluded corners. Hastily, you began building a wall out of everything both of you could find in the room. It probably wouldn't do much, but it was the best protection you could afford. He seemed to get the message too, gathering three times as much as you could hope to hold in your limited human arms, and dumping it onto your makeshift barricade.
You grabbed a rebreather mask off the wall just in case, when suddenly you froze.
PULL TO ENGAGE EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN.
The words were now exposed, written in bold, red letters above a red metal handle. Well you'd be damned.
"Get back!" You yelled, pulling the lever down hard. It groaned, snapping into place.
Three things happened at once. The bulkhead door, which was already warped beyond repair and in the process of peeling, exploded open, exposing both of you to the most swelteringly unbearable heat you'd ever experienced. You screamed as blisters raised all along the length of your forearm, which you had raised to shield your eyes. Distantly through the pain, you could hear him crying out too.
Then, with a bang, three sets of diagonal doors emerged, sealing the entrance shut, but not before a final explosion knocked you clean off your feet. You cracked your head against a wall, and everything went dark.

The Super Civic was a new trend car with economy and dynamic performance suited to the 1980s.
1300 S
1500 SC
It perfectly combines the best fuel economy in the 1500cc class with powerful driving performance.
Resource and energy conservation are common themes around the world. The new CIVIC is available with a new engine system that takes advantage of the excellent combustion efficiency of the lean burn method, which is the greatest advantage of the CVCC engine. It offers not only excellent fuel economy, but also low maintenance costs and a low price.
10 mode driving, Ministry of Transport inspection value
1500CE model E-SR 18 km/l
60km/h constant speed test value
28km/l 1500CE, GF (5 door) Model E/SR, Model E-ST
And yet, it still has the powerful driving feel of a sports car. It's truly a Super Civic.
For example, the new cliff-cut panel in front of the passenger seat provides enough space that there is no need to push the seat back.
An aerodynamic body that provides a smooth ride.
The styling minimizes air resistance and is focused on practical aerodynamics. It is agile in urban areas and stable and smooth on the highway. The new suspension grips the road firmly.
The springs of the front and rear suspensions have been offset to provide a more comfortable ride. The rear also uses a new Honda-style strut system, a world first, to ensure sufficient compliance. The suspension is much tighter.
1300・5-door LX
A new instrument panel.
The functions necessary for driving are concentrated around the driver. The centralized target meter () that places the speedometer and tachometer in one view, as well as the newly designed rotary channel radio, are also standard equipment. The design is easy to see and use.
A large, international-sized interior designed for the world.
Compared to conventional 5-door vehicles, the interior length is 25 mm longer and the interior width is 35 mm wider. Furthermore, the clever use of each space has resulted in an amazingly efficient interior.
All models are fully open hatchbacks.
It is a big opening that opens to the full width of the body from a low position, that is, just above the bumper. Moreover, the interior floor is low and flat. Large and wide objects can be easily loaded. The three-stage variable rear seat is extremely practical. It is a design that prioritizes ease of use.

Don’t let your (Human!!!) Mechanic make Mixtapes
Writing Prompt: A pirate ship boards, the human crewmate uses the coms to blast music trough the ship as a terror tactic.
Prompt Source: user fire-sword; subreddit Humans Are Space Orcs
The Captain had listened to this remix exactly once in its entirety and labeled it a terroristic weapon of mass morale destruction before locking it in a drawer.
To be honest, the human crewmate was perhaps a touch more thrilled than she strictly should have been to be given permission to actually use it.
It was horror-rock, falling into that delightful "creep" tune category with synthetic violins that wailed between high and low notes and a bass strumming heartbeat that artificially raised the pulse rate of the listening parties. Aliens... well, she'd found out aliens responded to that unconscious cue WAY more than humans did.
The fact that she knew every beat and bounce and hitch of it, well, that was where the morale destruction came in.
The pirates had boarded in a specific hallway- and they had been subtly guided to this door for a reason.
It was the maintenance crew hallway. The entire floor had holes big enough to reach through or climb through, and the human crewmate? She fit through them, being lanky, tall, and double-jointed. The ceiling had the same grates on either side of the walkway, to allow for access when the gravity was turned off, making it a catwalk surrounded by bolt holes.
The voice was soft at first- only someone who knew the song would know the words. But Human Jazz played them out perfectly to make the Pirates regret ever trying to raid this ship.
The first set of verses were about "burying" something, and every time it said "buried it" Jazz dropped uninterrupted from the ceiling to the floor. Just at the edge of vision, without touching the holes or making a sound, timing her catch of the bars below to the thump of the drum.
And once they were good and spooked, on edge...
She added her voice to the ship speakers, a roar that made the walkway vibrate under their feet for the chorus.
"RUN! AWAY! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, BEFORE THE MONSTER- MONSTER IS INSIDE! THOUGHT IT WAS DEAD! AND GONE! BUT YOU WERE SO WRONG! HASN'T BEEN SO LONG; YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D SEE- SEE, SEE THE DEAD WALK!"
Screaming from above and plasma lighting up the walls told her it was working.
What a shame for them- the pursuit would continue until morale improved. Her morale, or course. All that light would make this more troublesome until it cooled.
The next verse was about what had been buried coming back to bury the singer- it was time to change tactics anyway.
Now her hands reached up through the tiny holes and grates throughout the verse, grabbing and yanking on legs, tentacles, weapon barrels, whatever was in reach, heedless of the burns she was getting or the catch of nails on fabric and skin. Her fake-claw nails were just acrylics, she'd replace them after this, and some bloodstains from a ripped cuticle or two would really sell the idea that something dead and gross was trying to get at them on top of the “detached fingertips”.
As they were coming up on the second chorus, she pulled both hands back down and put them on a panel instead, directing one of the repair-bots with their dozens of arms to dance to the tune, the lyrics printed on it's glowing screen that loomed up out of the dark.
She already knew what she was going to do with the bridge- it talked about disease and parasites, so she was going to yank body parts under the grate and "bite" them with needles full of weak general anesthetics from the first aid kit. She didn't need to actually like, poison or paralyze them, the imagery from the song would make their minds do that for her.
Except-- the thunder of movement, out of sync with the music, headed back up the catwalk at an honestly dizzying speed, and suddenly it was absolutely quiet except her, the repairbot who had now started the fix the plasma damage to the walls, and the music on the ship speakers.
Poking her head up from the nearest access hole, the pirates were gone- with the exception of one, who'd been hog-tied with their own tentacles and blinded with their Captain's hat. Left as a sacrificial offering to the monster for leading their crew into a deathtrap, probably. Well, Jazz didn't want them to think they were too hasty and come back...
She bared all her teeth in the widest, meanest grin, including her sharper-than-normal canines, and whipped the pirate's hat off, the light of the repairbot's torch illuminating her from behind in only brief flashes.
"Buried what I thought would die, don't got no alibi, I buried it," she sang at the alien's horrified face, "I FUCKING BURIED IT!"
The pirate's scream was a noise she couldn't have replicated in a million years. Yeah, driving it home was a good idea.
"RUN! AWAY! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, THE MONSTER'S ALREADY INSIDE! THOUGHT IT WAS DEAD! AND GONE! BUT I WAS SO WRONG cuz it had been so long and life went on thought it was done I never thought I'd live to see THE DEAD WALK!"
‐-------------------------------------
"I still don't think you needed to render the enemy so terrified they entered an involuntary coma state," the Captain scowled at the human crewmate, who was slung sideways in her work chair. Again.
"It's not like I knew their species can even DO that, Cap! Besides, it was a bloodless battle that successfully repelled the enemy, right? And we haven't been bothered by pirates in that entire sector since!"
The Captain squinted angrily with all their eyes.
"We're a terror-tale in that sector now," they replied flatly.
"Wait, shit, did I accidentally Flying Dutchman our ship?! Aw fuck, Captain, I’m sorry."
The Captain sighed- finally, she understood the gravity of the iss--
"If I'd known that was gonna happen I'd have picked a better song! Dead Walk is kinda underground, how are other ships supposed to lean on the legend with an obscure Earth song?"
The Captain gave up and left to go drink their 400-year old heirloom spirits. They had never worried they were going to be the Onelle to finish off the 'drink in case of headache-inducing disaster' bottle but it looked more likely by the day.
Song: Dead Walk by RedHook Note: the remix featured here doesn't actually exist because I can't make it. Will update and link if that ever changes!

I'm gussing Ruby has a lot of questions for Nikolay's Tesla pistol and the tech behind it.
At the weapon maintenance classroom were Beacon student Usually came here too learn how to better take care of their weapons and how they can improve them.
But Right now the entire classroom was empty, as As there was no one in need of fixing their weapons. So the Was almost empty, except for the only occupant that was in this classroom.
Nikolay Arkovsky, the Soviet Marshall with his ever cold demeanour. Was currently in the middle of maintaining his Tesla pistol that was laying on the desk disassembled.
Nikolay: *Currently Busy in cleaning some of the parts of his weapon, while feeling the gaze of a particular little red reaper that is watching him from the distance* If you want to see my pistol up close, you can simply come over here, instead of hiding like a small kid, Ruby. *Saying all of this while not taking his gaze off his disassembled weapon.*
Ruby: *"Eeepp" in Surprised it being found out, Before off her surprise, and then using her speed semblance to appear next to Nikolay, who’s gaze was still on the disassembled pistol* How did you know I was here?
Nikolay: If you can call, hiding behind the door while poking out your head so obvious to anyone to see, Then you did a very poor job at spying on me. *Ruby puffed up her cheeks in a childish way, from being told that she’s terrible in hiding. but her demeanour immediately change into curiosity when she sets her eyes upon the Tesla pistol, to which Nikolai noticed this* I'm guessing you here because you interested in this. *gestures to the disassembled Tesla pistol*
Ruby: *Nodding her head excitingly, while having stars in her eyes* Yes! *making puppy dog eyes* Please tell me everything about it.
Nikolay: *finally looks up from his disassembled weapon and looks at her* So this is The Tesla pistol, created in year 1985 during the third world war, the man who designed this pistol with the help of The omega science division, is Mikhail Kalashnikov, The create the infamous AK assault rifle. *points at 2 different magazine, one was a regular magazine filled with bullets, while the second one looks like a small car battery* The Tesla pistol can shoot as regular gunpowder bullets and it can shoot High voltage laser projectiles *points to the area of the handle where There is a switch with three different features on it* this switch allows to switch between three different features that the Tesla gun has, Which can go from single shots, automatic and high plasma. *points to the barrel of the pistol that has many tesla rings on it* if switches into high plasma, the Tesla rings on the barrel helps gather more electrical energy before shooting high plasma that can destroy heavy armoured enemies and even vehicles. *Looks back at Ruby* The pistol was named after the Serbian inventor Nicole Tesla due to the technology that was used to create this pistol, that was mostly inspired from the research and adventures of Tesla. *finally finish with his explanation, he sees that star eyed Ruby was in total amazement and awe of the Tesla pistol*
Ruby: WOW! This Gun is amazing. *Looks up at Nikolai with exciting puppy dog eyes* Can I please help you with the Tesla pistol, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!
Nikolay: *makes a small chuckle before petting Ruby's head* Sure, Why not. *Ruby shouts “yay” with raising her fist to the air, before moving closely to him and begins excitedly helping him with the pistol*

Freak Show Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Buggy x fem! reader
Summary: After a failed attempt to fully rob a town, your crew has informed you about an easy lavish party on a boat that's vulnerable to rob from.
Word Count: 4k
TW: Buggy is annoying, man-hating (deserved)
Chapter 2: Captain Linien
You got up, rolling over in your sleep. Your eyes slowly adjusting from the complete darkness to the sunshining into your bedroom. You pulled the sheets closer to your body, wanting to keep the warmth in, snuggling into your soft sheets. You decided to stay in bed a little longer before having to start your day. Unfortunately for you and your crew, there were breaks to be had on sea. The next best thing was bound to happen. There was no way you were going to find the one piece with laziness and sitting around.
After lying in bed for a while you had gotten up and left the warmth of your bed. You walked into the bathroom that was attached to your room, taking a quick shower. You would’ve taken one last night if you weren’t so exhausted by fighting that ridiculous clown. You had spotted a few bruises on your legs and body from the fight the day before. Even when you didn’t see him, he was a constant nuisance in your life.
You stood under the showerhead, the water replacing the warmth that your sheet had previously kept you under. You let the water engulf your body as you scrubbed down your legs and arms with a rag with soap on it. After scrubbing your body, you moved on your hair, placing shampoo on your hair, transferring it to your scalp as you scrubbed into it, bubbles forming into your hair. You washed it out before putting in conditioner. You could not effort to look disgusting at sea. You had an image to keep up with. Call you high maintenance, but you definitely did look your best.
After spending a while in the shower, you decided to step out. You grabbed the towel that hung near the shower and wrapped it around your body drying yourself off. You went to your mirror applying your makeup before grabbing one of the outfits that hung in your room. Most of your outfits looked the same. Usually something laced and black. You took a deep breath before deciding to leave the room. Having to be captain of an entire ship definitely wasn’t easy work. You enjoyed it regardless. It was better than being a crewmate or some random villager waiting for your town to be pillaged by pirates. You open and shut the door behind you your heels clacked against the wooden stairs as you made your way up to the main deck.
You were greeted by your entire crew who were still suffering a hangover from the night prior. “I'm glad you all enjoyed yourselves last night…” You walked up the deck. There had to be one person sober enough to even tell you the plan for today. You never wasted a day. “Where the hell is Lilian?” You shouted out for her before she peered out from the group. Her head hung low, rubbing her eyes with her hand, trying to keep herself up.
“I see you kept busy… Any news?” You asked. She shook her head no, afraid to disappoint you. “Do any of you fuckheads have any news for me?” You looked around at the crew before someone stepped forward. “Ma’am… Uh- I did hear about a local ship hosting a party…” They spit it out finally, avoiding your eyes. You took in the information, nodding as you took steps forwards, taking steps closer to them. The speed of your steps only made the crewmate more nervous. Your heels clacking the wood slower than a single heartbeat that the crew member's heart pumped.
“Go on…” You said in a hushed voice. You extended your neck to enter their view, moving your head once they kept your glance. They finally were forced to look your way.
“It was something I heard awhile back in a bar when we were landed… There was a bartender who was talking to their co-worker about an event in a week.” They tried to recall. You nodded as you tried to take appropriate steps to find out how you’d even catch the ship. You weren’t too far from there anyway. You only took to the seas again 2 days ago. If you made a move now, you’d be able to catch them. You had been in between a few islands, making stops to each before eventually taking your longer journey throughout the seas.
“Do you know where they’re stopping?” You wondered.
“I heard it was just a party. They’re more than likely to go in a circle near the Island and then back.” They continued. Your lips curled into a small smile before pushing it down. You were pleased. Simple enough. There might be Marines that you would have to overthrow, but simple enough.
“Perfect… Killian! Go lead the sails! Now!” You ordered. “We have a party… come on now… we can’t show up in these rags.” You laughed as with a simple motion of your hands shooing the crew made everyone scatter to either go to work, get their weapons prepped or get dressed presentable for the party. All choices were right in your view.
Vivian rushed to your side as you were on your way out to sharpen your swords. “Slow down!” She gasped for air once she reached you. “For such tiny legs, you walk way too fast.” She huffed.
“You just might be slow.” You shot back at her, chuckling at her joke. You weren’t sure if you were laughing at her joke or how heavily she was out of breath to just keep up with you.
“Touché… But still… Fuck… give me a minute.” She put her hands on her knees as she took deep huffed of air before recuperating. You stood above her; finally, might you add. Vivian was rather tall, despite your height difference.
“Okay this is going on way far longer than a minute.” You joked, trying to poke fun at her. She was probably the only one who you were able to be silly around. You stopped showing that off a long time ago. You couldn’t help yourself every so often though. Making people laugh was your favorite thing to do. But you eventually found that it made people take you a lot less serious, just like how people find Buggy, an unserious foolish pretend pirate.
“Fucking hardy har-har. You’re so funny.” Her eyes rolled themselves. “But do you really think this is a good idea? This ship could have a ton of Marines. It could be a trap. Why would two people loudly talk about a party in a bar full of pirates? Hm?” She made a point.
You bit your lip, thinking it over. Your finger laid on top of your lips before swirling in circles before pushing against Vivian's nose, booping it. “Cause they’re drunk idiots working in a bar.” You tried to excuse your plan. You were willing to risk it. Even if it was Marines, your ship was fast enough to escape. And your crew was skilled enough. A marine was nothing against your crew or even a woman who could vanish before their eyes. “Trust my instincts.” You reminded her. “Now go on, you have a party to get ready for. Woo!” You giggled before sending yourself off.
You entered your quarters and ripped one of your swords off of the wall. You examined the sword before sitting down on a stool. You grabbed your tools before beginning to sharpen the sword. You spent most of your time making sure it was sharp enough before heading off to train. You trained yourself with a sword for years. You were unfortunately never in a place to train with a master swordsman. You taught yourself everything.
You hid under the rubble of what used to be your neighbor's house. A raid tore your entire village, houses being burnt, and parents being ripped away from children, executed in front of the entire town. Children were either taken or in hiding. But as time continued, less and less children were in hiding as the pirates who raided the town found them. You laid under what use to be a table that laid against what used to be a wall.
You heard footsteps, peering to the side to see if you could find your parents searching for you. But they were long gone by now. You felt a hand grip your shirt collar, being pulled away. You let our a shriek as you began to kick and flair your arms around. “No! No!” You cried. You did not look where you kicked or punched before finally hitting a sensitive spot. The man let go of you before kneeling down to hold onto his shin.
“You stupid brat!” He yelled. You watched a large piece of fruit drop from his sack. He tried to quickly grab it. You knew you could use that readiness as a negotiation. You grabbed the fruit and held it behind you, tightly against your arm and body.
“Give me that!” He yelled. You shook your head.
“Free me and you will, whats it worth to you?” You shouted back. He drew his sword, ready to take it to your neck before you got up and ran. He chased after you. You took a bite out of it, the pirate dropping to his knees.
“You stupid fuck! You have no idea what you’ve just done!” He dropped his sword in defeat. You took more bites before finishing off the fruit, purely out of spite and pettiness. You threw the stem of it at him. “Take the girl at sea! Have her learn the hard way. Stupid brat.” He growled as he gripped your collar again, making sure to keep a distance from his body to you. Another man came and grabbed your legs. They brought you to port, swinging you back and forth before chucking you to the sea. You had just learned how to swim that year. But it seemed nothing you learned helped. You struggled to float, but you sank farther and farther. Your body essentially was made of a bag of rocks against the sea.
You tried to keep yourself afloat before your body tired itself out. Your sight grew dimmer until it was consumed by complete darkness.
You were awoken, frozen cold as your eyes finally shot open. Your eyes being burned by the sun, shutting your eyes immediately. You turned to your side, swallowed sea water spewing out of your mouth. You felt a pat on your back, turning your head to see one of the village girls. “Who are you?” You asked, trying to recuperate with what just happened.
“No time… get up.” She ordered. You nodded, stumbling as you tried to get up on your legs, too weak to carry yourself. She wrapped an arm around you and threw your arm around her. She dragged you off to where she had been hiding. And you both remained there for what seemed to be days. You never left the spot until you both felt completely certain that they were gone. But any sound outside kept you both in fear. You both were too nervous to actually leave. You only ever left your spot after finding out about your new abilities. Once you had discovered them, you wandered around the disheveled torn-down town to come back to report what happened. Apparently, the footsteps you heard were a rescue team, looking for any survivors.
Regardless of never being found again, stranded, you have never felt so grateful towards another person. You could never find yourself on how to repay them. You still never did.
Now
You had draped the long lacy dress over your body, wrapping and hooking a corset to yourself. You kept your hair down, knowing that you’d most likely blend in. Even if you didn’t, you knew you’d turn some heads. Perfect to flirt with rich men long enough to steal something off their person. Men were your easiest targets. Most pirates at sea were lonely, so just any slight attention gave them up easy enough for you to have them distracted long enough before you or your crew could rob them blind. Marines too. Rich men were just eager that someone would even give them the time or day.
You strapped a belt around your waist, sliding your sword in place before sneaking two smaller knives into the corset you had. Along with the harness attached to your thigh. You could not afford to have what happened in town with Buggy ever happen again. You could not take that kind of embarrassment ever again.
You walked back up to the main deck before getting news of the party ship still at the dock. You smiled before ordering the ship to dock, putting down their Jolly Roger to keep themselves hidden. How dumb would you be, parking your ship near a ship and not possibly be detected?
Your ship soon arrived, laying the plank down for you and your crew to make their move. You lead them as they scattered themselves around to keep it less suspicious that a crew of tons of people behind one person were going to this party.
You stepped forward to the bouncer, making up a name. “Not on the list.” They stated.
“But… my friend told me they’d get me on. Hmm…” You tried to think quickly. There had to be a way to get on. “There possibly any other way… I mean…” You looked up at the bouncer, leaning in close. Once his eyes darted somewhere else, to avoid temptation, you quickly glanced at the list. ‘Captain Linien’
“I’ll just ring up Captain Linien. I’m sure we could sort this out…” You shrugged. You reached into your pocket before you were stopped by the bouncer. Apparently he didn’t want to get into any problems with the boss. “Uh- sorry. I must’ve missed your name.” He quickly reacted. You showed him a smug smile before walking in. “Those are my plus ones if that isn’t an issue. I can bring Linien out right now if it is…” You vaguely threatened before being quickly brought on board.
‘fucking idiot…’ you mumbled under your breath as your crew was allowed their way into the boat. You separated as you wandered around, making small conversations. You had left a group to remain at the seaport to follow the ship at a distance in case you were meant to leave immediately. You already had such a high bounty on your head. You could not afford a visit from one of the warlords of the sea. They’ve nearly caught you before. But that’s a story for another time.
The ship began to move. You were now ready to strike. You started slowly making rounds back to the people you introduced yourself to already. You casually leaned your hands on them, running a hand down their torso. They’d stare at your hand for a bit before remaining eye contact with you. Your eyes were usually intense but enticing. But once you caught them, you’d carefully slip away their jewelry or their money. Sometimes both. Before engaging in even longer boring dialogue until one of your crew could ‘distract you’ and pull you away from the conversation.
You acquainted with as many people as possible before excusing yourself. You had to find something else to rob. You hid in the bathroom, focusing your energy before slipping out, a ghost in the middle of a rob. You made sure to not bump into anyone before sneaking around in any room you could find. You found a few cargoes, sneaking as much valuable as you could into a bag you had.
You were not satisfied though. You made enough money, hell more than enough to throw a feast 3 times a day for 4 months, but you were hoping for a map. You snuck into the captain's quarters, rummaging around before finding scrolls. You smirked, stuffing them into your bag before looking at them. You found yourself quickly making it back to the party. You were sure your crew would find more.
You looked around the room before finding someone who looked just rich enough but dumb enough. He was a younger man, his hair slicked back in a white suit at the bar. You took your seat next to him, leaning against the bar to peer over the liquor.
“You need help finding anything?” You caught his attention. Time to play the role of the helpless bimbo.
“Oh… yeah sorry. I’m not usually in spaces like this. I have no idea what's even on the menu…” You lightened your voice as you squinted, moving your head around, looking for something. All you thought about was how’d you steal that liquor later for your own party.
“Darling there isn’t a menu… here let me order for you.” He fake politely flirted. Of course you knew there wasn;t a menu, you prick, you dreamed of saying to him, but played it off as a smile.
“No- no. Please let me pay it myself.” You pleaded, but he put a hand up denying your plea and you kept quiet. These types of men were the same. Thinking if they just played savior for a helpless dumb girl, they’d get some kind of action from them.
“Thank you.” You smiled
“It’s okay. Uh- something sweet?” He asked and you just nodded, playing up the new role you gave yourself.
“Anything for you my love. What’s your name?” He reached for your hand, planting a kiss on your knuckles, making you want to vomit. But you just gave him a fake name.
You sat at the bar, a drink in hand as you stirred your straw in a circle, simply out of superstition. Your hand toying with this bratty annoying rich kid with enough of his daddy’s money. He had to be maybe a year off or more your age. It could go either way. You giggled at his stupid jokes, playing up your role, as always. You heard a throat clear, expecting your crew before spotting the last person you’d wanna see.
That stupid fucking clown. “Uh- I didn’t know you guys have a circus show playing here.” You giggled at the guy you spent the last couple of minutes with flirting.
“We don’t… Uh- yea, my father hadn’t paid for one…” Shit… he’s the captain's son. Shit.
You really lucked out just using him for his own money rather than information.
“They didn’t, But hey buddy, she’s been robbing you the whole time. Check your watch.” Buggy blew your cover. You stiffened up, removing your hand from him, and kept them to yourself. “Oh, can I get my ear back too? This has been real awkward.” Buggy confessed before hiding his ear flying out of your purse's side pocket. “Did you really offer a guy a blowie too? For a gold chain?” He continued to expose you. “I guess he’s not the only one you stole from.” He laughed at his own jokes.
“I don’t have a clue who you are.” You lied. Hoping to save face in front of the captains son. But Buggy tsked. His hand sneaked off his body, opening your purse to reveal all the jewels, money and maps that were kept in it.
“No one likes a liar…” He used the fake name you gave. “Or was it Jen? Or Crystal? Or June? Or Li?” he continued to name all the fake names you gave. All attention was drawn to you. You tried to quickly snag your purse, but Buggy swooped it up quicker, due to his proximity to it. “Sorry pretty boy, it wasn’t gonna happen.” He snickered.
“Someone get security!” He yelled out. The crowd grew frantic, running off to find some safety, or a way to get off what was eventually going to be a death trap.
Well cover blown.
You drew out your sword, holding it up against the gentleman’s throat. “Now, what’s going to happen here is you’re going to take this man in and give me my shit. If not, I will slice you up like a ham.” You threatened.
“Hey, jokes are my thing. Come on now.” Buggy gleefully tried to bully. “Shut the fuck up!” You shouted at him, drawing your sword at him.
“Hey! Watch it!” Buggy put his hands up in defense. Your sword laid against his throat, pressing the tip of it under his Adams apple.
“Make another joke and it will go straight through.” You threatened. You saw Vivian from the corner of your eyes and a few crew mates. You flicked your head up, telling them to leave. You had it covered. You were sure you’d get back safe enough. She nodded before guiding people out. “Pretty boy stay. I’m sorry you had to get dragged into this.” You quickly tried to bury the hatch. “Oh. He gets an apology, but-“ Buggy started before seething in pain from the sword slowly piercing him. “Shut it!” You ordered. “Listen- fuck what was your name again? Whatever. No hard feelings. It’s just pirate business is all.” You shined him a kind smile.
You felt a quick hit to the side as you toppled over, sending you flying out of your chair and onto the floor while Buggy’s hand came back to his wrist.
“You’re such a prick. It’s the same old trick.” You tried to get up. You looked at the bar and watched the poor kid finally make a run for it. “Fuck!” You yelled. “It’s just too easy with you though. You fall for it ea- Ow! Fuck!” Buggy held his head, hearing a loud thud come from you. Vivian never left. She grabbed a chair and hit Buggy, hoping you’d make a safe escape.
“Vivian! Get the fuck out!” You shouted. Buggy grabbed her by the throat knocking her into the bar. You quickly shot up and ran over to him, throwing punched, but he detached himself with every punch thrown. “Get the fuck off of her!” You sent your sword flying to his neck, only for it to pop back onto his body. You dropped the sword before making yourself not seen. You climbed the bar before throwing a kick into his nose.
He let go of Vivian, holding onto his face quickly. You grabbed her collar and pushed her off to run. She finally listened and tried to make it out before grabbing your purse from off the floor, playing along with the rest of the crew and members on the ship. Safety boats were waiting for people to be brought back to shore. You knew your crew would have everything handled.
You sent more kicks and punches over at Buggy before feeling a grip on your arm. You looked up and watched 3 Marines standing there. Two grabbed Buggy off the floor, prepared for him if he flew off as more Marines were on their way to the room. You both were compromised.
You felt another pair of hands grab you, trying to make out where you were as you struggled to escape the first ones grip. You felt cuffs go around your wrist as you were now officially caught. So was Buggy as it didn’t matter how many times he tried to pull himself apart, a Marine was there to grab whatever flew off his original body.
“Nice going clown.” You finally revealed yourself. There wasn’t a way you’d get out of this.
“Oh, so you can make jokes, but I can’t?” Buggy criticized, hurt that you even threatened him over his jokes earlier.

Your first night sleeping at camp went surprisingly well, a lot of the time you had trouble sleeping in new places, but you think the drive and overall excitement wore you out so much that you became practically comatose once your head hit the pillow. You wake up in the cabin alone, you take some time to lay in bed, enjoying the time to yourself. When the kids get here, sleeping in will be difficult if not impossible, even on some days off, so you decide to soak it up now. You make yourself get up eventually and start getting dressed. T-shirt and shorts today, you would be working outside basically all day, it was going to be hot, hair out of the way, socks on, sneakers, hat and sunscreen smeared, you head out.
It isn’t too bad yet. It’s still early, the sun isn’t high in the sky, the fresh air is nice, there is dew on the grass, and you are ready to face today’s tasks head on. You go to the mess hall and find the serving trays full but the line itself is empty, you must be one of the first people up. You don’t wait around, you serve yourself, eat eggs and bacon and toast quickly, down coffee and juice and with a water bottle filled with ample ice you make your way back out, intent on getting serious work in.
Wanting to get to right to it once at the boathouse and pull the key out of your shorts pocket, and you open the door, you look over everything and start to break down what you need to do and then get to work. First up is cleaning out the boathouse. It’s a little dusty, a little cobwebbed, some garbage about and while working on cleaning you notice there is a loose floorboard. You find a tool box and nails, and you really get into it. Some of the shelving is screwed up, you take to fixing that up too, and when doing that you also rearrange the boathouse to your liking. You figure you might as well since this is going to be your work station for the next three months. The floors had been swept, the window cleaned letting in some of that wonderful summer sunshine, the garbage all bagged up, you press on.
Throughout all this you assess the boats and decide they need some sooner rather than later maintenance, while working on the boathouse you found some still sealed cans of paint, after checking out the colours you made the call that after fixing them up you could even paint them. You make this the new priority, the paint was appropriate for the job, must have been bought for the last time the canoes were painted, but after they are cleaned up they will need a while to cure up properly. Even when the kids arrive you will have some time, all the kids who are going to use the canoes have to pass a swim test as well as being informed of the general safety prior to getting in one. If you are lucky, the first canoe rides will happen before the end of the first week of them being there.
After some asking around to the other counsellors you find out there is a belt sander available, which is perfect because hand sanding this many canoes would be very time-consuming, this is going to speed up the process exponentially. The one thing that eventually pulls you out of the work is realising how hungry you are, not even sure of what time it is, but the sun is much higher, the temperature way hotter. You make the call to go to the mess hall, see if it is lunchtime. When you arrive, the place is empty. You worked through lunch and missed it, judging by the clock on the wall you’d been almost an hour past the allotted window.
Fuck.
What are you going to do? You did bring some snacks and maybe retreating to your cabin to get something to tide you over was the move, you were thinking it over when the doors leading back to the kitchen opened and your eyes were drawn to the sound. Upon seeing Buddy up front, apron on and busing tub in his hands, you gain hope back for a second. He smiles and calls out, “Oh, there you are.”
You begin to make your way up to the serving line where he is, “Hey Buddy. Hate to be a bother, is there any lunch left?”
He tells you in a light tone with a raise of his eyebrows, “You’re a little late.”
“I know, I know, I got really caught up working, but still, do you have anything?” You asked, and he said, “Of course I do.”
“Wait really?” You asked, and he said, “All the food passes through my hands personally when serving, so when I didn’t see you I knew I should put something aside.”
He gives you a single finger raise, the busing tray is set down, and he comes forward, reaches under the serving line, roots around a bit before pulling out a bag. He gestures for you to come closer, and you come up, he holds the bag out, and you take it. Opening the brown paper to find a wrapped sandwich, a fruit cup, cookies, veggie sticks, cheese and crackers, “Wow, quite a spread.”
“Hey, I know you’re working hard, gotta be well-fed.” You appreciated it, the look in his eyes conveyed that he believed it and that it meant more than just the job he was hired and brought here to do.
“Thanks, it’s really nice of you.” He shrugs and brushes you off, saying it’s no big deal, he also tells you that he intends to stick to this, will always make sure something is put aside and even if you are late at times he encourages you to check the fridge in the back.
You end up sitting at the table and eating the food he made, an easy conversation is struck as he is cleaning up the mess hall around you, since it was just the counsellors so far it was relatively easy, but he wants to keep in the habit of keeping it all cleaned up.
“So, how goes the set-up?” You asked him, and he said, “Oh great, kitchen just needed a good deep clean, I’m basically all done, I just want to reorganize the fridge.”
“I totally get what you mean, I did the same thing with the boathouse.” You tell him and he asked, “Already? You work quick.”
“Well it’s mostly done, right now I’m working on fixing up the canoes.”
“They need much work?” He asks, and you tell him confidently, “Nothing I can’t handle.”
“How foolish of me to doubt your immense talents.” He said easily as he loads another tray into the bin. “Very foolish indeed. I’m glad to hear the work is going well, but what about the assignment I gave you?”
A brow quirks up at that as he questions, “Assignment?”
“Yes, to help you not be an anti-social loner this summer?” The recognition hits, and he says, “Oh, that.”
“Yes. That. Have you made any friends yet?” He has finished picking up the trays and was going to start to walk to the back, and he says, “No, not quite yet-”
“Buddy.” You say his name and that makes him stop. A shared look, and he says your name in kind, and you push, “You promised.”
“I’m going to try, seriously, just been busy so far and also ease up we’ve been here like a day.” You take a bite of your sandwich and squint at him, an unconvinced hum, and he groans, eyes rolling back as he tells you, “I mean it, I’ll try okay?”
You finish chewing, swallow and tell him,“That’s better. You deserve a fun summer, and I am not always gonna be able to be around to make sure that happens.”
“You made the sale, now stop selling.” He says it lightly, and you thank him for listening to you.
He brings the trays to the back and comes back out, he is wiping down tables as you talk, the conversation is good, there is a levity to it that makes you smile, the back and forth you’d already started to develop brings a smile to your face. You are sure he is going to make friends and have a good summer.
Soon enough the food is done, you are giving him another thank you and getting up to head out the door, he calls out, “Once those canoes are ready, you’re still gonna take me for a ride right?”
You turn and call back, “You’ll be the first one I take out on the water, alright?”
A smile is thrown your way along with the call of, “Alright!”
Back out in the sun and back to work you go. The time flies by while you are hard at work under the slowly sinking sun. You know another few hours have gone by when Sam comes by and tells you as such. He comes up with a friendly wave and an apology about how long he has taken to get over to you, you tell him that it’s, “-no trouble, I’ve been busy.”
“So I can see.” he says with a look to the tools and things spread around in the grass. He has a small cooler with him, he opens it and pulls out a water bottle, he holds it out and says, “Take a break?”
You do just that.
You and he sit on the grass, and you ask him how his day has been, “Busy, been getting pulled in every which direction, but I’m managing.”
“Almost like that’s the head counsellor’s job or something.” You tease and he laughs. He has a good laugh, you wish you could hear it more, a kind of laugh that makes you want to laugh too, infectious. You hope after camp is going, and you are all more settled into it, that he would feel more comfortable and relax some more.
“How’d you get into doing this?” He asks, and you tell him, “My favourite activities at camp were the water based ones, swimming and of course canoeing, I loved it a ton. I got to a point of being an unofficial helper at my old camp with all that stuff.”
“Wow, impressive.” He sounds genuine, and you toss him a sideways smile before you take another healthy drink from the water bottle he gave you, it feels so good and needed in the beating down heat of the summer day.
The conversation meanders until you ask him, “So what about this camp, what’s the history of it?”
He opens his mouth to start to tell you when there is a shout of, “Sam?!” You both look to see another one of your fellow counsellors coming towards you both, seeking help, and Sam sighs. He gets up and tells you, “I’ll fill you in on that soon, okay?”
“You better stop running out on me soon, Sammy, or I’ll get the impression you don’t like me.” You call as you watch him go, with another laugh and a promise he’ll improve.
After some more work and a quick shower, you have dinner with the other counsellors, and you are determined today to stay up for the fire. You feel bad about being so tired and bailing, bonding with your fellow staff before camp starts up is important to you, foraging new friendships and relationships is important to you too. Dinner was good, better than yesterday even, and when you were going to return your tray and a few others upfront, you didn’t want to make Buddy have to run around cleaning them all up. You managed to catch him, offering up the trays, he smiled and took them gratefully.
“Hey Buddy, thanks for dinner, it was fucking great.” You praise, and he said with a half-smile, “Thank you, glad you liked it.”
“Just giving credit where it’s due. You coming to the bonfire tonight?” You ask, and he says, “I am and actually about that, it’s s’more night tonight and I could use a hand, mind helping me out?”
You’d be happy to.
Following along, you thought about how you hadn’t been inside the kitchen before tonight, the place looked good considering the fact it was post dinner, but again he just had to worry about feeding the counsellors, you are sure it might be a different story when all the kids are here. He was running the trays through the dishwasher and had gotten a box out while the machinery hummed behind him, he was loading it up with what was needed, graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate and the rest as you watched him.
“So is this what you always wanted to do?” The question filled the space, even though it didn’t need to be filled. Buddy looked up at you and said, “What?”
“Cooking. Being a cook, is this what you always wanted to do?” You asked and one of his shoulders picked up, a half shrug as he said jokingly, “I think the term you are looking for is chef-”
He gave you a look-out from under his curls and the playfulness found in his blue eyes as well as his soft looking pink lips curled into a smile had quite the effect on you. What he said next was not as humorous, but it was warm, more honest, ”-and kind of. Always wanted to open a restaurant.”
You feel there is more he isn’t saying, but you two are very new to knowing each other, maybe he will tell you more about it another time. Instead of really pushing, you just give a simple, “Really?”
He smiles wider, you see a flash of his teeth, “I mean, everyone needs their raison d’etre, right?” You laugh, “Oh man, busting out the French, hm?”
“I’m Canadian.” He said with a fond roll of his eyes as he picked up the box, adding on, “I’m allowed. Now come on, let’s get down there.”
You and Buddy make your way to where the bonfire is meant to be that night. Starting the fire was easy enough, and soon other people were joining. You and he make s’mores together, toast marshmallows, break apart chocolate squares and assemble the confections together, pile up a plate with the sticky sweet delights you crafted, partially wrapped in tinfoil, both have a drink each during the process. After that, you are walking around with your bounty to share with everyone. Before you know it, you are with Sam again, he is standing alone and looking stressed, you ask him, “You want a s’more?”
He looks over at you and gives you a nervous smile, mumbling, “Thanks.” He takes the s’more but doesn’t take a bite. You quirk a brow at that and ask, “You wanna share with the class or?”
Sam’s eyes move towards you, and he exhales a simple, “What?”
“I can tell something if bugging you, so open your mouth to tell me all about it or to shove that damn s’more into it.” You tell him with a smile before taking a sip from the cool can you have in one hand, the other occupied holding the plate of s’mores.
You see the ghost of a smile pass his lips, head tipping forward a little, before he starts to tell you, “I’m just worried about getting everything ready in time for the camp’s opening. Worried about making this a good summer for the counsellors and kids alike too, honestly.”
You can’t help the laugh that spills out, you have to grip the plate harder for fear it might slip from your grasp. You laugh so hard it takes a moment for your shoulders to stop shaking, and you inhale hard as you catch your breath, Sam asks for the second time tonight, “What?”
“Sorry, sorry! I just-” You giggle before saying, “Sam, that’s fucking ridiculous.”
“Oh gee thanks.” he scoffed, and you jump to say, “No, no, I just mean, I’ve been seeing how hard everyone has been working, the camp will for sure be ready and as for having fun? I mean, come on, I saw the draft of the activities, everyone is going to have a killer time!”
You set the can down on the picnic table you had both been standing next to, you reach out and set your hand on his shoulder, you give a reassuring squeeze and a smile that radiated as much warmth as the camp fire burning a few feet away. The smile seemed to infect him as well, you could feel his shoulder relax under your touch. He asked, “You mean that?”
And you confirmed sincerely, “Course I do! Now loosen up, eat your s’more, have a beer, kids won’t be here for a good long while, get your relaxing in now! It’s not like we can keep working on what needs to get done in the dark anyway, right?”
He exhaled, amused and nodded, “You are very right, and uhm, thank you. I really feel better getting that out, I think I needed to hear that.”
“Anytime, and I mean that, now I am not leaving your side until you get a drink in, you wouldn’t let me drink alone, would you?” A slight pout and he says, “Well, I am supposed to be setting an example to the other counsellors-” He reaches into the nearby cooler and takes out a beer.
You and he drink together, people come by for s’mores and the night wares on. You have a good time, and eventually you and Sam drift apart, and you talk to your other counsellors, and Sam does the same. At one point you look over at him and see him talking animatedly and excitedly, at least three drinks deep, face a little flushed and laughing to some joke, it makes you happy to see.
You go to bed that night much later and wake up the next day much later as a result. You get ready and make your way to the mess hall for a late breakfast, when you are in line getting served Buddy teases you, “Sleep alright?”
A small laugh, “M’ fine, I hydrated before bed, no hangover for me.”
“Smart cookie.” He praises as he heaps scrambled eggs next to your silver dollar pancakes, and you grin, “That’s me.”
The breakfast is great, you eat the food, get some orange juice and coffee in you and fill up your reusable water bottle with ice and water before heading out to get back to work.
Falling back into the rhythm of it is easy, you work hard, work so hard in fact you work right through lunch, again, you shouldn’t make that a habit, but you are finally caught up on everything. You are starving but happy, you make your way to find the head counsellor before going to get some food, too excited and desperate to tell him you are all caught up, you find him after a while, calling out , “Sammy!”
You approach him with a wave, and he looks up from his task, chopping wood, a smile of his own, he waves in return as you walk up to him. “Hey! Missed you at lunch, was going to swing by soon to check on you.”
“Sorry, was busy working, but I had to come tell you, I finished my tasks, so if you need my hands anywhere else I can pick up some slack.”
Sam’s brows lift, and he seems genuinely surprised, he sets the axe down, leaning on it, your eyes linger just a bit, he is missing the flannel, and you can’t help but notice how nice his arms look in his camp branded t-shirt. “Wow! You work quick!”
“Thanks!” You say with a big smile, feeling genuinely happy to hear the praise, Sam tells you, “I appreciate the hustle, seriously, but you worked so hard, you can totally take the rest of the day off. If you want you can help with some of the final clean up in the last few areas tomorrow.”
“Awesome! Totally would be happy to help out, I’ll see you at dinner.” You say, and he stops you, “Just one second. I have a question.”
“Shoot.” You prompt him, and he says, “How did you get the rest of your work done so quick?”
“C’mon, man, I worked through lunch.” You say with a smile before tacking on, “And I’m just that good.”
“Well, you didn’t eat then?” You shake your head and Sam tuts, he leans the axe against the pile of good as he tells you,  “That’s no good, dinner is hours off yet, follow me.”
That is the first time you find yourself in Sam Wescott’s office. It’s nice, homey, the windows let in a lot of natural light, his desk is organized. There is a shelf with pictures from summer's previous, you recognize locations from around the camp, Sam was a cute kid. He offers up half of his own sandwich from lunch and a small bag of chips. You grin and take them gratefully, “Oh, thank you so much!”
“Least I can do, you can’t go hungry.” He said easily enough with a nod. “Now go enjoy the rest of your day.”
You turn on your heel with another thank you, and you hear him say after you, “Thank God you joined up this summer.”
The feeling was mutual. You ponder how well fed you were between Buddy and Sam as you munched on turkey on wheat on the way back to your cabin. You caught a power nap and a chapter of your book before dinner.
After another great meal, where you made sure to thank Buddy profusely for the dinner he teased you, “Seriously, I missed you at lunch again, you gotta stop working so hard, you’ll burn out, and we aren’t even a week in!” You told him you appreciated his concern, but that you’d be fine.  After dinner, you had nothing going on, tonight there was no set activity, seemed everyone had been working themselves very hard, it was a free night, do whatever. You go to your cabin again, gather your things, and go have your first proper shower since arriving. You really scrub yourself down, much more involved than the quick rinse the other day, the rest of the night is spent relaxing and reading one of the many books you brought along.
You pass out and wake up mid-morning to the sound of knocking on your cabin door. Stumbling out of bed, you make your way to the door and pull it open to find Sam standing outside. “Hey! Oh, my God, I am so sorry, did I wake you up?”
A glance down at yourself still in your tank top and sleep short shorts, you shrug, “Yeah, but no worries, what’s up?”
He nodded and said, “I was just wondering if you could show me around the boat house after breakfast? And then I can show you where else we might need your help?”
“Oh yeah, sounds great!” You tell him with a nod, you try to smile but end up yawning, you cover your mouth slightly embarrassed, and Sam says, “Great, see you post breakfast.”
You wave, “See you then.” You close the door and since you are awake you set to getting dressed and ready. You head out over Buddy serving you French toast and bacon, he greets you with a surprising amount of cheer for it being so early, you suppose you are making an impression.
“What are you doing today?” He inquires, and you ask, “Why do you wanna know?”
“I’m done with my work, wondering if I could get that canoe ride?” He asks, and you tell him, “Sam has to check over my work and I said I would help out some other people, but I can totally make a bit of time for that today.”
“Yeah?” He asked, and you told him, “Absolutely! I’m excited about it, dying to get out on the water already, it’s been too long.”
“Amazing, maybe after lunch?” He asked, and you said genuinely, “I’ll do my best.”
Post breakfast you grab Sam and steer him in the direction of the boat house, you show him everything, walk around pointing out all you did and Sam is very impressed, “You REPAINTED the boats?!”
His mouth was hanging open, he reminds you a bit of a fish, and you laugh, “Well most of them, this one was in surprisingly good shape!” You say, patting the side of it. “They look like new, right? I even redid the camp Clear Vista on the sides.”
“I am speechless.” He had his hands on his hips, shaking his head in disbelief, and you felt very, very proud of yourself, “Where else do you need me?”
“Oh yes! About that-” He clapped his hands together and said, “-I asked around and turns out everyone is all caught up, so everyone gets a free day!”
That IS very good fucking news. You have the whole day to do whatever you want! You ask Sam, “What are you going to do?”
“I am going to finish up some last minute paperwork, look over everyone else's work-” The way he shares his admission is slightly shy, he rushes to tell you next, “-but I will be able to join for the fire tonight!”
Stifling a laugh, telling him, “Sam, you work too hard, you better have some real fun tonight.” You sigh after, and he promises, “I will.”
Satisfied, you wish him well on the remainder of his work, and you make your way back to the mess hall. You head right back to the kitchen, and you push open the door calling out, “Oh Buddy?”
The fridge closes, and you see his curly haired head pop into view, “Surprised to see you here already.”
“I’ve got good news! Sam told me everyone is all caught up, everyone has a free day, so I am ready whenever you are.” You tell him, and he says, “That is very good news! I’ve got some of my own too, today is grab and go for lunch.”
He gestures to the trays on the table, “I am gonna put em out there and people can get whatever they want, I did it, so everyone could grab whatever to finish their work, but now I guess they can grab it and go wherever they want.”
This is wonderful all around. You help Buddy put everything out for anyone to grab before he tells you, “Let me just finish the cleanup, I’ll meet you at the boathouse in a half hour?”
You nod and go off to get some things ready. You love even this, getting everything together to go out on the water, the  half hour passes easily and Buddy joins you, he lets you take the lead, and you help him get in the boat, and you are pushing off. Buddy’s curls are hidden from view, wearing a bucket hat, he is wearing some of the sunscreen you brought, he had packed some of the lunch stuff for you guys to enjoy. The conversation flows like the water the boat is in, you talk easily but also share comfortable and companionable silences. You talk a bit about technique, how to maintain balance, steering, and Buddy listens to every word.
He breaks one of the bouts of silences by saying, “You really know your shit.”
A light laugh, the running water and rustling of the trees clear in the backdrop, “I’d hope so after all this time. Can’t tell you how many hours I have spent under the sun and in a boat.”
While you guys are paused, simply floating, eating lunch, he says, “I think I get it.”
You hum questioningly and Buddy says, “Why you like it. S’ real calming.”
Brightening considerably, you tell him, “Yeah it is! Very calming, I love how still and quiet everything can be out here. Gives me a chance to reflect.”
“Could use some of that from time to time?” He asked, and you nodded, taking another bite of your sandwich, “Yup, you?”
He sighed before parroting you, “Yup.”
“Canada that stressful?” You ask, and he laughs, a small startled sound, “No, no, the country is not.”
“How would I know? I’ve never been. Could be a lawless wasteland for all I know.”
“It isn’t that different from America, you know.” He teases, and you say, “Then why’d you leave?”
He shakes his head, “Oh you know, just…Wanted a change of scenery. I’m young, why not get outta the country, see some of the world?”
Fair enough. Can’t fault him for that.
The rest of lunch is nice, you get him back to the shore, and you say, “We should do this again sometime.”
“I would love that, make it a regular thing.” He took off his life jacket and passed it over and told you, “I have to go get a start on dinner, thanks again for the ride.”
“Anytime.” You wave, and he returns it, you watch him go before cleaning up, getting the canoe out of the water and back in place. Back at your cabin, you do some more reading for a while until you feel a little restless.
You want to enjoy the nice weather, take advantage of it, back outside you go and during your walk you come across Sam, finally done with his work. He seems more at peace just from the relaxed expression on his face. You end up sitting on this hill together, you can see most of the camp, the sun is starting to set, dinner will be soon.
Sam says, “This is my favorite place at camp.”
You glance over at him, the orange light playing off his features, the shadows that fall and your eyes follow his lips as they move, “It’s nice up here, the view is great, just the air feels better out here you know? Fills up my lungs in a way that they don’t get filled up anywhere else.”
You let him talk, and he continues, “I am so excited, this place means the world to me, and I am dying to make this even better than it used to be when I was a kid, you know?”
Meeting your eyes, he says, “Thank you for all your help, not to be a total sap, but I’m really grateful.”
It has only been three days, but you already feel closer to Sam, you have a really good feeling about your blossoming friendship.
“I don’t think you are a sap, I can tell this is really important to you. I’m happy to help make it happen.” You said, you stretch before leaning back on your hands, the grass feels cool, you look up at the colourful sky and say, “I want the same things you do, you know. I want to make this the kind of summer I remember having as a kid, and hey, maybe it is a little selfish, but I kinda wanna try and recapture some of that for myself.”
He was a little vulnerable with you, no shame in being a tad vulnerable back.
“I hope you can.” Sam sounded so sincere, it was utterly endearing.
Dinner was a bigger deal tonight, Buddy and Jason poured a ton of effort into it, and there were many thanks all around. You talked excitedly with your fellow counsellors about the busy day ahead tomorrow with the first batch of kids arriving. After dessert, a make your own sundae bar, you had seconds, everyone headed back out to the fire pit.
Alex, one of the other counsellors was going to be song leader, he came out with his guitar, he plays songs and everyone sings along, Buddy is less than impressed, you offer to sit with him and do so at the fringes of the group. You and he are having a drink and that is when Sam comes over.
“Not singing?” Sam asks, and you laugh, a gesture of your head to your brunette and not so musically inclined haired companion, “Buddy isn’t a fan of singing and I didn’t want him to sit alone.”
Sam seemed surprised to hear of this and said, “Nice of you to not leave him lonely.”
Buddy hums and takes a drink, a nod before saying, “Yeah she’s been great at checking in on me, we went out on the water earlier.”
“She took you out in a canoe?” Sam asked slowly, and you said confidently, happiness apparent, “First go of the season! It was so fun, Buddy had never been in a canoe before, can you believe it?”
“I cannot.” Sam laughs, “I do believe about her checking in on you, she’s been doing the same with me.”
“Oh, thanks by the way for showing me that spot on the hill, totally gorgeous, you might bump into me there on my own sometimes.” You say with a cock of your head and a raise of your brows, and Buddy not wanting to be left out, asks, “Spot on the hill?”
“Yeah, there’s this nice place that you can see almost all the camp from, Sam and I sat up there, had a good talk at sunset before dinner.”
“A conversation at sunset.” Buddy mused, can at his lips, “You’re real busy, aren’t you?” He asks with a nudge of your shoulder, and you put your hands up, “Guilty.”
You see it then, a look on Sam’s face at the easy physical contact between you and Buddy, there was something to it, you look over at Buddy and see them both looking at one another, almost considering each other. You look between the pair and the realization starts to sink in, you are starting to like them both and if the way they are looking at each other and reacting to hearing how you have been spending time one on one, they might be beginning to like you too.
Maybe this summer is going to lead to more. But how could you ever pick between them?
