My Dwight Frye fixation is low-key an obsession now and I don't know how to feel.
Anyways, who wants to ask for my headcanons about a random character of his :3

"The Vampire Bat"
You can see the scene from the photos above in the 1933 movie "The Vampire Bat",this is an interesting movie worth knowing about.
Before watching the film, I was skeptical about this production, but it captivated me with its plot, even though it is not particularly developed. of course, it is worth knowing the actors who played the main roles, so we will see Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill, Melvyn Douglas and Dwight Frye on the screen.
It is not a popular film, but it is worth the viewer's attention with good actors whom you will recognize from other cult horror films.
Certainly, if you have watched films such as "Frankenstein" or "Dark House", then the set of "The Vampire Bat" will you not be for strangers. This procedure was aimed at saving as much as possible, which is why the film was shot mostly at night.
Although the film is in black and white, selective hand coloring was used to highlight the torch flames seen in the chase scene. In copies restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive, this was simulated through digital enhancement. I had to include this interesting fact here because these flames intrigued me very much.
time for a summary.
When the villagers of Klineschloss start dying of blood loss, the town fathers suspect a resurgence of vampirism. While police inspector Karl remains skeptical, scientist Dr. von Niemann cares for the vampire's victims one by one, and suspicion falls on simple-minded Herman Gleib because of his fondness for bats. A blood-thirsty mob hounds Gleib to his death, but the vampire attacks don't stop.
I must admit that I felt sorry for Hermann.:(

this is a tangent but i’ve never seen him called “the town vampire” before and it calls mind an alternate scenario where absolutely everyone knows about him and he’s just a mild local nuisance they occasionally have to shoo out of their yard with a broom
realization: if i am not mistaken barnabas is seen driving 2 times in the entire series and both times he hits someone with his car

Herman Gleib Headcanons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s illiterate
He loves to draw, and he tends to draw pictures of bats in the dirt
His name is actually supposed to be spelled “Hermann”, but because he can't read, he doesn't care if people spell it differently
He has a developmental disability and the thought process of a young child
He’s very sensitive to large crowds and loud/overlapping sounds, which is part of why he tends to be alone
His favorite food is apples, particularly the juicy red ones.
He lived with his grandparents when he was really little, and was very sad when they passed away. He would visit their graves every winter and leave a baby bat and some flowers as gifts.

Rewatching The Vampire Bat (1933) and ajejksksm it's so good. Love how Herman deliberately acts weird/hisses at people when he overheard them saying awful shit about him for his special interest. You tell 'em Herm. Like this dude is completely chill 99% of the time and just befriends little old ladies and actively tries to be helpful whenever possible but some ableist starts talking shit and he knows how to play it up to freak them out. Good for him.
Also I'm just now noticing that one of the "suspicious" things they point out is that he's wandering around "all hours of the night" but...he's homeless. He's literally just homeless of course he wanders around at night sometimes. Jfc. This movie did a pretty decent job of showing how fucking awful and nonsensical bigots are, actually.

Dwight Frye as Herman Gleib in a publicity still for The Vampire Bat (1933). This is Dwight's second honorable mention, after the first version of The Maltese Falcon (1931).
