Der Film ist Drew Goddards und Joss Whedons Antwort auf typische Horrorfilme, in denen sich eine Gruppe an Studenten in einem abgelegenen Wald in einer kleinen Ferienhütte aufhalten und nacheinander abgeschlachtet werden. Der Horrorfilm folgt zwar demselben Konzept, bekommt jedoch durch den Einblick hinter die Kulissen - nämlich den Forschern, die jedes Jahr verschiedene Monster und Mörder auf die Gäste der Hütte hetzen - eine besondere Note. OCTOBER HORROR MOVIES (2019) #2 TRIANGLE

The marketing for Triangle goes out of its way to hide the plot twist, which is actually to its detriment. Had I not seen this come up on several lists of suggested horror films on Amazon Prime, I would have skipped right past it. Without knowing the film's central conceit, it looks like it's going to be just another supernatural horror film, this time set on an abandoned cruise liner (Seriously, guys, I already watched the Gabriel Byrne film Ghost Ship).

Nope. It is not that at all. It is so much better than that. The first thirty minutes plays out like the standard horror movie that the premise sets up ("a group of friends overturns their their yacht and is forced to take refuge in a drifting ocean liner. They soon find themselves hunted by and unseen attacker"), but then things get strange. Time starts looping back on itself, and our main character (I hesitate to call her our "heroine" because, well, you'll find out) begins wandering through the same set of murders over and over again, trying to undo what's been done again and again.

It was interesting watching this after seeing In The Tall Grass the other night, since they both employ a similar time-looping element where the overlapping timelines affect one another. However, this one does it so much better. The plotting of the overlapping timelines is incredibly tight, and there are some great visual moments where physical artifacts from previous loops let you know how many goddamn times this has gone on. I don't think I can describe much more without spoiling it, but, suffice it to say, it's a much better film than its own marketing suggests.

My only real quibble is that it's an Australian film full of Australian actors (including a Hemsworth, but not that Hemsworth), but they're all pretending to be Americans. It would have worked just as well set in Australia instead of Florida, and without the occasional dialect flub.
