Part of my thinking was, and is, that "post-apocalyptic with superpowers" isn't actually at all an uncommon idea, right? What's uncommon is anyone actually having room to play with it meaningfully. You get one hundred dozen tantalizingly opaque bad futures that play out in six issues or less. You get one fun little romp by Mark Millar that later writers try to flesh out in fits and starts but without the sort of unified worldbuilding bible or terminal project goal that would be necessary to make the project pop. You get things like Last Knight on Earth, which was in typical Scott-Snyder fashion an auteurism-fueled gonzo fever dream (pos) more than it was a world necessarily.

Wildbow set Ward in a post-apocalypse with superpowers, but it wasn't primarily about that post-apocalypse with superpowers. It's just where the story was happening. I mean, objectively the setting of Ward is still pretty fleshed out, right, I mean we get enough details in the first five arcs alone that you could build a pretty compelling setting bible- but for some reason, IMO largely the breakneck pace, the world often feels disconnected from the story that's happening in it, even when the world is the direct result of whatever's currently happening in the story. All settings that get the full Wildbow Worldbuilding Treatment end up feeling like the definitive version of their genre setting to me- Worm for superheroes, Otherverse for urban fantasy, Claw for boomerbait-Tom-Clancy industrial-complex streaming shows. Gimel and Perpetuity could very well have ended up being that for the superhero subgenre of the "Bad Future." But it didn't quite take, because for better or for worse that wasn't the project.

May: *blinks as Coulson storms into his office and starts dialing to call fury*

*silence*

Sky: ha! Say it ward!

Ward: you sunk my bat-

Coulson: *heard in the distance* YOU PUT FAKE BLOOD ON MY WHITE VALENTINO CAPTAIN AMERICAN VINTAGE CARD????

Fitz: he seems like he is taking this hard

Simmons: can you blame him? Some of those are awfully hard to find. There are some reproduction cards that pass quite well but aren’t real. I actually have some reproduction ones that have Peggy Carter on them

Coulson:*in the distance again* I DONT CARE THAT IT TECHNICALLY MY REAL BLOOD! ITS THE FACT YOU PUT BLOOD ON M Y VINTAGE CARDS!!!

May: *goes to cockpit to avoid everyone*

I KNOW Coulson was pissed that Fury put fake blood on those cards just to motivate the avengers 💔
