beth and me have talked about it a lot. but i wanna talk about alice in tangled a bit more okay cause like.
Alice is a lil girl who lives in old corona, she's quiet, she's shy, she follows her mom or sister around like a lost puppy when she can. she walks around with bruises visible, and flinches away from people.
Then Alice disappears for an extended amount of time, and just comes back and shes just kinda like that now. A lil more weird and a lil louder than before. She has far more bruises and wounds, but she's also going up to other children and grabbing them to play. and she keeps talking about absolute nonsense.
and other adults just keep going up to Quirin begging him to do something because everyone knows what's happening with helen. Everyone thinks that Alice's disapperance with just extended abuse. But what can Quirin do to the Kingsleigh family? Helen is a very high ranking noble. What can he do? But everyone in Old Corona keeps begging him, and so he promises to keep an eye on her.
But jesus christ how can u keep an eye on a child who's willing to run head first into a charging horse and what the fuck did she just put in her mouth and where the fuck did she go she was literally just here??? And just, basically, Quirin just kinda shoves Varian at Alice hoping that either the two of them will cancel eachother out, or one of them will be a good influence, or at absolute bare minimum, Varian will probably tell Quirin about their 'adventures'.
Also, how long was alice gone? Well, no one's really sure??? Cause it wasn't weird to not see her for a few days. They know that at least two to three weeks passed. But it might have been longer. All they know is that Alice wasn't so shy and had a sword when she came back lol
#🐰 || study;#v;1 || season one || collecting stars and dreams;#tw abuse#tw child abuse#--; im 99% sure that everyone is just convinced h elen gave her some sort of head trauma#--; and thats why she behaves like this so suddenly#--; meanwhile al is just like NOPE just got MOre trauma and INTENsE bootcamp

Strange directions
warning : tiny angst
next chapter , masterlist
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seemed after Hamish had spoken these words that even the air around them would stand still and everything was waiting for a discharge. Y/N also felt herself holding her breath in disbelief as she realized what was happening before her eyes.
Her cousin, who looked as if she would like to run away from it all, looked nervously back and forth between the man she definitely did not want and all the guests. Sometimes a few stammered words came out of her mouth, but they were incomprehensible to Y/N and the guests.
The Y/Hc-haired girl saw the rising nervousness in her cousin's brown eyes and was about to run to her to get her away when she felt the hand of her aunt Helen Kingsleigh on her wrist.
A glance at her aunt made it clear to Y/N that she herself was struggling for her sanity not to take her daughter away from the visibly unpleasant and almost sad moment. ,,If you go there now and take her away from saving our entire family, it will be worse for you and your aunt. It will be worse for you and your mother than ever before," came the whisper of her aunt, who leaned down slightly to whisper in her niece's ear.
Y/N stayed in place as quietly as she could at her aunt's behest and for her mother's life, but it also made her nervous to know how bad things could get. After what seemed like an eternity, something happened in front of the crowd Alice spoke something to Hamish before she broke free of his grip and fled into the maze of white roses.
Some indignant remarks and even curses were heard from the crowd behind Y/N and her mother and aunt. A glance at her second cousin Margaret revealed that she was disappointed but not surprised at her sister's behavior and instead went back to looking for her husband.
Her mother was also in her own world again and had already gone back to her place to wait for her prince. But Y/N herself was now standing in a crowd that was wildly discussing and didn't know what to do now.
She saw her aunt who was already being harassed by Lord and Lady Ascot but decided not to intervene because she didn't want to cause any more trouble. So the 20 year old decided that she could bring the coachman a piece of cake to give Alice time for herself and not to press her.
Arriving at the buffet, she was taken aback to find that a new strawberry cake had been served, but any cupcakes with red hearts were missing, which saddened her. A quick embrace of the heart still resting in the pocket of her dress made this go away as she had her personal one.
So she again slid a piece of cake onto the white porcelain plate and again took a silver fork that was decorated with gold like any other. Again armed with cake she started her little journey to the courtyard where the other carriages were standing and either the coachmen were asleep or passing the time by talking to each other.
However, it could be said that her carriage already stood out among the new and shiny ones because of its wear and tear.
Her coachman was still in the same position as she had left him, sleeping peacefully on the seat. She was about to say something when she heard a particularly loud snore from the coachman and decided to put the cake next to the man so that he could help himself when he woke up.
As she started to walk back, she saw Hamish walking past her with his head red, not even noticing her and probably going to his beloved mansion to sulk. With a shake of her head she started her own way but was stopped by her older cousin, ,,How are you Y/N? We haven't seen each other in a long time, you look good, how is Aunt Imogene?" she showered the younger girl with questions. The Y/Ec-eyed girl knew that her cousin wasn't really interested and was only doing it because she was worried about her mother.
Not forgetting what would happen next and what consequences it would bring, Y/N played along. ,,Me and mother are doing very well, thank you for asking. You look as beautiful as ever yourself but tell me, did you see Alice coming out of the garden or is she still there?".
The girl smiled briefly flattered by the forced compliment before shaking her head and speaking in a regretful tone, ,,Unfortunately no my sister is probably still sulking and has succumbed to her musings." The other girl nodded her thanks to Margaret and went into the garden herself, which was her real destination.
As soon as she disappeared behind one of the rose hedges, she started sprinting as far as her dress would allow to lead her to Alice. She had seen her cousin run in here, but she didn't know where she was going in this maze, which made it difficult for her not to get lost herself.
So she turned the next best corner and circled hundreds of white roses until she came to a stop, panting. Just as she was about to lean against one of the tall green hedges and close her eyes, she saw her cousin's light blue dress waft around one of the hedges and disappear.
Immediately she was on her feet again and ran after the track she had seen. However, as she turned the corner she saw Alice running straight towards the adjacent forest which did not give her a good feeling. However, she didn't want to be among the boring people and her mother had the prince so she wouldn't be missed much.
So she decided to run after her Alice to calm her down and maybe do something together if she felt like it. No sooner said than done she left the estate behind her and also her family who concentrated only on the money and the existence. It took her a while to figure out where to step on the forest floor without falling, but she made it without fail and saw the blue dress again. Alice ran deeper into the forest and already seemed to disappear behind the big almost black looking trees.
So Y/N followed her as fast as she could, trying desperately not to lose sight of the blue fabric through all the undergrowth. So she took a last look at the blue dress before it disappeared in a big hole in an old big tree and left the silent forest behind. Only now Y/N actually noticed how silent and almost eerie the huge dark forest was and almost gave her goose bumps.
When she heard a crackling in the undergrowth behind her she jumped around but saw only a white rabbit. However, when she looked closer she saw a pocket watch in its paw and it was wearing a vest, it seemed surreal as if she had fallen down and was now dreaming or hallucinating.
Both Y/N and the rabbit looked at each other in confusion and uncertainty as if they were both checking to see if what they were experiencing was real. However, Y/N only became more confused when the rabbit began to speak, ,,Oh my goodness, it's way too late, I have to hurry. What if no one is waiting for her downstairs? I have to go," it spoke hastily before it hopped past Y/N and disappeared into the hole.
Now she was alone again, but her ignorance about what had just happened here did not diminish and it was almost like the many leaves that lay scattered and disordered around her. Slowly she approached the hole before she knelt down and looked down.
However, she encountered nothing but blackness and space. To make sure she was looking correctly, she blinked a few times before looking down again, and sure enough, she saw a room at the bottom of the hole.
She bent a little further forward but when she felt the first lumps of earth and stones under her gave way and before she could rule she fell down the hole. However, to her renewed surprise, it was not dark in the hole, it was already almost cozy around her flew books, pocket watches and even the one or the other piano which made tinkling noises.
Although she heard only at the beginning of her scream which came quite automatically from her but close to her already a few minutes much and she had calmed down as far as it went she heard the ticking of clocks. She thought even in the distance of the entire room through which she heard a lot of trumpets and chatter.
But what worried her was that the lower room was getting closer and closer and she had nothing to break the fall. But before she feared to end up as a lump of mud downstairs, she felt herself stopping ungently on a bed before falling further.
The girl pulled her arms protectively in front of her face as the floor approached and feared that these were the last moments of her life. But when the floor broke open underneath her, she fell another few meters before landing with a thud on the floor of another room.
With a painful moan and groan, Y/N straightened up and knocked the dirt from her dress, which had been damaged here and there, when she broke through the ceiling. Y/N looked around the black and white tiled room and realized that she had no idea where she was.
Once she was aware of this, she set about examining the individual doors, which couldn't be more different. Some were huge while others were so small that even her hand wouldn't fit through them, but they were all made of solid wood that she couldn't break through.
Even jiggling the door handles did not bring anything except creaking and unnecessary waste of time. Although Y/N thought about trying to run into one of the doors to get it open, she didn't because she didn't want to hurt herself even more. Then paused for a moment, remembering the rabbit's words that someone was waiting for her. She doubted it was her, but apparently Alice had landed down here before her and made it out.
Suddenly the scales fell from her eyes and she saw a glass-bottomed table with a key on it that was no bigger than her finger and seemed almost too small. She now had a key but no suitable lock that would accept it. So she walked again around the round room and noticed a lightly curved cloth which, when she pushed it aside, revealed a small door.
She knelt down and inserted the small key into the lock turned it around and sure enough, to her relief, it opened. Y/N squinted her eyes as the bright light hit her from the other side and it was almost painfully bright.
Her head fit through, but the rest of her body was too big to have a chance to get through. So she crawled backwards into the room and straightened up before putting the key into the other pocket of her dress to avoid damaging the heart.
So now she was faced with a new task: to get through the small door without breaking any bones. Her gaze fell again on the table on which was a vial that had appeared out of nowhere.
With a raised eyebrow, she approached the table with a skeptical feeling before taking the bottle in her hand and reading the note. There was written Drink me on it, which did not surprise her less, since she had no idea if it was not poisonous.
However, after a short consideration, she decided to do it anyway, because what choice did she have. After Y/N had drunk the first sip, she took another before dropping the bottle and breaking it with a clang. Y/N felt first dizzy and then sick and finally she felt small.
When she looked down at her, all air escaped from her lungs and she shrank, and not metaphorically. The dress which had nestled on her shoulder and had also seen better days fell down on her and let her sink into a sea of fabric.
At first she thought that she would be naked under her dress, but with a joyful realization she noticed that her undergarment was a bit loose on her body, but it had stayed with her.
The girl pulled on one or the other ribbon that was attached to the garment and pulled it tighter to her body so that it would not slip. When the girl realized that she was now small enough she marched towards the small door but stopped halfway when she realized that the key was still in the dress sea.
So she dived through the fabric before she discovered the now normal sized key in her hand and continued to search for the heart. She did not know why this was so important to her but the sweet heart had something about it that she liked as if it meant something to her deep in her heart.
Both the heart and the key disappeared into the pockets of the garment which, fortunately for her, had them. The way from her former dress to the small door seemed to take forever with her size. Nevertheless, she remained strong and continued on her way until she finally arrived at the now normal looking door.
The girl took out the key from her pocket, turned it in the lock and opened the door which again threw light on her. This time she was able to put her hand protectively in front of her face to avoid being blinded too much. When she took it down and the light had settled, she stopped in amazement.
Before her stretched a completely new and so crazy world as she had never seen it at most only in her dreams. It was absolutely magical, the flora and fauna looked completely different from England and the whole atmosphere was indescribable.
So the Y/Ec eyed girl started moving again and made the first steps into the unknown world which she decided to call Wonderland.
Word Count: 2.2k
Summary: (Y/n)’s so used to being the background character in everyone’s story that she forget she can be the main character in her own.
Warnings: Slight angst but majority fluff!
A/N: I love this man with my whole being omg pls
Stumbling into Wonderland with Alice had been a wonderful thing for not only Alice, but (Y/n) as well. For Alice it was an escape from all the things she didn’t wanna do and would never wanna do. She wasn’t forced to marry some sod of a guy who’d make her miserable for the rest of her life or to be the proper lady she was expected to be, but instead she got a taste of freedom. And although it was an escape for (Y/n) as well, it was an escape of a different kind.
In the other world, with it’s dreary skies and monotonous patterns and cycles, (Y/n) lived a very humdrum life. Her family had never been as fortunate as Alice in any ways of the sorts, it was a miracle that they were friends to begin with. Alice’s father had been friends with (Y/n)’s since boyhood and because of that, he always made sure they knew they were welcome to anything of his that they wished. And while (Y/n)’s father had never taken advantage of that from the way Alice’s mother treated (Y/n) and her family, it wouldn’t be hard to think otherwise.
When Charles was still around, she hadn’t done anything out of line. The older woman always kept to herself, occasionally having an afternoon cup of tea with her own mom. However, her true colors and feelings came to light after the passing of her husband. During the next few months after her husband’s absence, the (L/n)s were there for Kingsleighs. Although they didn’t have the funds to help them monetarily (for they also didn’t need it), they offered their labor and services to the two as much as they needed. Farm work, house cleaning, garden maintenance. Anything you could think they had done. But as soon as Helen was well (as well as you could be after losing someone so dear) , she had forbid them from coming to their property. She didn’t believe her and Alice should associate with people of “such low stature” because it didn’t “align with their image”. But that had never stopped Alice.
Anywhere Alice went, (Y/n) was always there by her side right along with her. They practically went everywhere together and that hadn’t changed since they arrived in Wonderland. (Y/n) was grateful that she had chased after her friend. It was like she knew something would happen. Afterall, crazy things always happen when you put two curious girls together for more than a moment. The friends they had made since they arrived were nothing short of lovely. She knew her sister would describe them as odd characters and disturbing individuals. Telling her to stay far away from them and to not associate herself with those types. But what was wrong with being odd or even disturbing? The only things worth doing in life were a bit odd and disturbing and if that made her peculiar than so be it.
For the first time in her life, she felt as though she belonged. Sure, it wasn’t her story nor her destiny to be here as it was Alice but that did not mean she did not appreciate Wonderland for what it was. The story had never been her story, not here, and certainly not where they were from. Alice was the main chat and she was the topic that would get trickled in after.
“Everyone has a part to play, (Y/n). Even if it is not large or as set in stone, each person’s role is necessary for the story to progress, even yours. You’ll see.” the words of that tricky caterpillar replayed in her head over and over again whenever she had a moment to think. What had he meant by that? Was her story not more than to be here in support of her dearest friend and the latest edition to their friends? Was she not just a tool in the scheme of things? (Y/n) had never known people of lesser importance as herself to contribute much of anything big to a legacy as large as Alice’s!
From her end of the table, she watched as Hatter threw his hat high into the air before it landed on his head causing everyone to erupt in a jostled mess of laughter and cheering. She smiled fondly from a far. Tarrant was a kind man. No matter what was going on or where they were, he always had a way of making her feel included. That’s just who he was. He had known what it was like to feel excluded from things and the last thing he’d wanna do is be the cause of that for someone else. But it was nothing more than his nature, that’s it.
“You know, you should just tell him how you feel.” a velvety voice sounded from beside her ear causing her to jump. The (h/c) haired girl glared at the purple cat, reaching a hand to swat him away but he disappeared once more before appearing on her other side. “He watches you often, even when there is not many around to see. But I always do of course.” The Cheshire cat said in a sure tell tone. The girl scoffed at him, shoving another small pastry into her mouth.
“I’m not in the mood for one of your jokes today, cat. So if you’ve come to mock my feelings during my 2nd to last day in Wonderland, I wish you well and send you off.” she huffed out, crossing her arms across her chest, turning her gaze away from him back to Tarrant who was already looking at her. The Hatter gave her a secret wink and a smile before turning back to the March Hare who seemed rather frazzled about something. Or perhaps excited. But once again, the grinning cat appeared in front of her face once more.
“Silly girl, you ignore the plain truth in front of you? I can see why you and Alice get along so well, both of you can be quite foolish. Oh well, the story isn’t over yet after all.” and with that he was gone. What did he mean by that? The story was clearly over. Alice had done what she set out to do. The Jabberwocky had been slain, the White Queen ruled once again, and all had been made well. And what was with everyone with stories? Not everything you can do will always be a story and not every story comes to an end. She decided not to dwell much on it. This was her last night she’d ever spend in Wonderland and she’d rather like to keep it in good memory.
So when the White Queen offered her a hand to dance she took it, their dresses swaying in the wind in oppositional unison. They all danced with one another, twirling, laughing, and having a grand time. The entire time the smile never once left (Y/n)’s face which a certain hatted man enjoyed with all his being.
--------------------------------------------
“I can’t believe you’re leaving today. It seems as if it was only yesterday when you arrived.” the girl swiveled around to see the red head there, a bittersweet smile on his face. His smile grew once she turned to face him. Removing his hat, he bowed as he grabbed one of her hands placing a delicate kiss to the top of it. “I am delighted to have known a woman as graceful as you.” hot tears sprung into her eyes which she quickly got rid of before he stood up. Giggling some she hopped onto the large sit swing, motioning for him to join her.
“Don’t get sad yet, Hatter. I’ve still got a few hours left. You can’t rid of me that easily.” he joined her on the swing, a wide grin still on his face. Although it was partly real, she could tell there was some sadness lingering behind it. (Y/n) turned her gaze to the sight in front of them. From the large benched swing, you could see just about all of wonderland over the edge of the cliff. “Besides, there’s not much to miss. I’m just me.”
“And ‘just you’ is a lot! I’ll miss everything about you. The way you mimic the bird calls you hear, the way you get excited when the rock you skipped across the water goes further than you imagined,” she looked at him in shock as he continued to speak, “E-even the smaller things like how you leave the crust of your sandwich for last and give your crumbs to the ants. But I think more importantly I’ll...I’ll just miss your presence.” he said the last part softly, staring off the edge of the cliff to avoid her gaze. A million thoughts raced through her heads as he spoke. Could it really be? Could he really share the same feelings as she did? (Y/n) reached a shaky (s/c) hand to lay on top of Hatter’s pale one, intertwining their fingers.
“Hatter, I've got something to tell you. During my time here in Wonderland, I’ve enjoyed every second I’ve had with everyone. But more importantly, I’ve enjoyed my time so much with you and I believe it’s only fair to share with you that my feelings I have for you go beyond those of normal friendship. I guess you can say I’ve grown...quite mad for you.” his head whipped to face her as he stared into her eyes, tears welling within his own. He flashed her another smile except this one was genuine, filled with the love and warmth he had shown her the entirety of her time in Wonderland.
“(Y/n)! Alice sent me to fetch you. I’m afraid it’s time for the two of you to head back.”
-----------------------------
After a lot of shedded tears, heartfelt speeches, and goodbyes that were nothing short of wholesome, it was time for the two to head home. Alice patted (Y/n)’s shoulder before holding her arm out for her to grab. As they neared the portal, (Y/n) turned around once more to stare at her friends but when she got to Tarrant, her heart began to break. The gaze they held with one another was long until she simply couldn’t take it. Without thinking she ran up to him once more, grabbing his shoulders tightly.
“Hatter, Tarrant, I need to know how you feel. I couldn’t live with myself if I left and never knew.” he shook his head, looking away from her as he tried to stop the waterworks that were withheld behind the dam. Hot tears streamed down the delicate skin of the girl’s face. “Hatter...please.” her voice was broken as she begged.
“I believe I wasn’t honest myself either. I am completely enamored by you, my dear. I wish I had said something sooner but even though I couldn’t, I’ll always hold a special place for you in here.” he said, placing a hand over his heart. Standing on the tips of her toes, she leaned forward placing a quick peck to his cheek.
“What if it isn’t too late? What if I stayed?” she started, watching as he shook his head, “Hatter listen! You may think I’d regret if I stay but I think I would regret even more not following my heart the first time it’s ever tried to tell me something. Nothing would make me happier than staying here with you...that is if you’d allow it.” a silence fell over as everyone awaited his answer. Without another thought Hatter leaned down, pressing his lips to hers. The kiss was soft and sweet. Filled with a silent promise, a silent vow to care for her as deeply as his heart will allow.
“I do not know what I did to get so lucky, but I would do it again if needed.” she felt herself grow flustered at his words. A quick peck was placed on his lips before walking over to Alice once again. The blonde had tears of her own in her eyes. She was glad her friend had found something to fight for, something to call her own. But also for the first time in many years, they would not see each other everyday as they once did. They both stared at each other before throwing themselves into each other's arms, laughing in unison as bittersweet tears fell.
“Good luck. Make sure you put your foot down. You’re Alice! You listen to no one and march to no one’s drum but your own.” Alice gave her a curt nod.
“Take care. We’ll meet again, do not doubt it.”
Although Alice’s story had seemingly come to an end, it seemed as though (Y/n)’s story was just beginning. For once she wasn’t the side character in someone’s tale, but the main character in her own.
The Lost Queen {Alice In Wonderland x Reader}
Chapter one: White Rabbit
A bright light fell on the young princess. She batted her eyelashes unstoppably. She put a hand on her hurt forehead, having her flinch from pain. The teenager looked around her, not recognizing her current location nor how she ended up there. She stood up and started walking down the woods only to hear some feminine voices. Out of pure curiosity, she followed them, only to she three women. One was way older, the other was younger and the last one looked around her age. The last girl noticed her and went up to her.
"Hello, are you lost?"she asked
"I--I don't know. I think so?"
"Alice!"asked the eldest woman "Who is your friend?"
"I don't know."the girl named Alice said
The young princess spotted around the area and then she felt her hand touching a necklace in a shape of a heart. The necklace was a locker and when she opened it, she saw a name written in calligraphy.
"Y/n..."she whispered and the two females looked at her "That's my name..."
"What a pretty name."smiled the woman "Do you know where are you from, y/n?"
"N-no... I don't remember..."
"Can she stay with us, mother?"asked Alice
"Yes."
And so it all started, Helen Kingsleigh took y/n in and a few months later she adopted her even though she was seventeen. Margaret and Alice were more than happy to have a new addition to their little family and they all treated her as if she was their blood relative. Y/n started calling Helen mother after a while and for some reason, she felt more happy than she ever was.
*4 years later*
The years passed by slowly but happily. Y/n did not remember anything of her past and she couldn't care less, because she felt like this was what she seeked ever since she was a child. A loving family. No sibling fights nor duties. One day, she and her new family were going to a garden party. Alice wore a simple yet beautiful light blue dress and y/n wore the necklace she had when she met Helen, Alice and Margaret and a light green gown and both of hers and Alice's hair were in curls. Once they got in the carriage y/n started gazing out of the window with a small smile.
~Flashback~
"Hello y/n!"he said cheerfully
"Hello, Tarrant."she said with a big smile and then Tarrant took her hand and started dragging her to the others
"You are late."said Mally as she jumped on y/n's shoulder
"Sorry guys, I wanted to visit Absolem first."
"Hey, y/n, wanna see a trick I learned?"asked Chessur, y/n nodded her head mutiple times with a grin in her face "Now you see me and now poof!"and with that, he became invisible, only his tail was visible
Tarrant and y/n tried to suppress their laughters but when Bayard bit Chessur's tail they bursted into pure laughter while Chessur reappeared and grabbed his tail back with a scoff.
"Princess, princess! Look at the snowman. Doesn't he look like him?"said Tweedledee and Tweedledum as they pointed at each other
"No he looks like you."said Tweedledum
"More like you."replied Tweedledee
"Actually, the snowman looks like my father's portrait when he was a child."joked y/n,the twins looked at it carefully and agreed as they chuckled a little
"Oh hush you two, you are mocking our friend's father. The king."said the white rabbit, Nivens McTwisp, he looked at y/n "I'm terribly sorry about their behavious, your highness."
"Nivens, I'm not offended but please... We are friends. Do not call me "Your highness". My name is y/n."
"I'm sorry, y/n."said Nivens as he looked down and y/n hugged him tightly
~End of Flashback~
"Are you alright, n/n?"asked Alice in concern for her sister as y/n blinked rapidly at what she saw but quickly turned to Alice with a smile
"Yes..."said y/n hesitantly "I'm fine... I'm fine."she then looked at her mother, Helen "May I ask why we are in such a hurry?"
"You two will know once we get there."
Both girls let out a heavy sigh as they patiently waited to arrive to Lord Ascot's estate. Once they did, the garden party was in full swing. Everyone had turned out in their summer finery. Guests played croquet on the great lawn. Skiffs drifted lazily on a meandering river. Alice and y/n approached Lord and Lady Ascot with a fixed unnatural smile. Lord Ascot was a stately, aristocratic man. Lady Ascot was red-faced with annoyance.
"At last! We thought you’d never arrive. Alice, Hamish is waiting to dance with you. Go!" said Lady Ascot and then she pushed Alice off and turned on Helen. "You do realize it’s well past four! Now everything will have to be rushed through!"
"I am sorry. We…"
"Never mind!"she looked at y/n with a sweet smile "Pleasure to see you again, dear."
Y/n returned the gesture with difficulty before Lady Ascot rushed off. The young h/c haired girl rolled her in annoyance but smiled a little when Lord Ascot came to apologize for his wife's behaviour.
"Forgive my wife. She’s been planning this affair for the last twenty years."said Lord Ascot
"If only Charles were here…"said Helen saddly
"My condolences, madame. I think of your husband often. He was truly a man of vision. He would have liked you miss y/n."
"Thank you."they said in unison as y/n smiled a little
"I hope you don’t think I have taken advantage of your misfortune."
"Of course not. I’m pleased that you’ve purchased the company."
"I was a fool for not investing in his mad venture when I had the chance."
"Charles thought so too."said Helen with a small smile
As the people were dancing, y/n was humming a melody too familiar and yet so unknown to her. She then spotted Hamish walking away towards his mother and that when she ran to her sister.
"Something's up, right?"asked y/n
"Yes. And we are going to find out what."
"I think it has to do with Lady Ascot's behaviour. She seemed in a hurry and Lord Ascot said that she had been planning an affair for years... Do you think it might be--?"
Before the h/c hair girl could finish her sentense, two giggling girls appeared in front of them. It was the Chattaways.
"We have a secret to tell you."begun Faith
"If you’re telling me, then it’s not much of a secret."said Alice
"Perhaps we shouldn’t."replied Fiona
"We decided we should!"said Faith
"If we tell her, she won’t be surprised."
"Will you be surprised?"
"Not if you tell me."said Alice and she and y/n looked at each other with knowing looks
"But now you’ve brought it up, you have to."said y/n with a side smirk
"No we don’t."said Faith
"In fact, we won’t."
"I wonder if your mother knows that you two swim naked in the Havershim’s pond."replied Alice
"You wouldn’t!"said Faith anxiously
"Oh, but we would. There’s your mother now."said y/n as she and Alice pointed towards the two girls' mother
"Hamish is going to ask for Alice's hand!"blurted Fiona
"You’ve ruined the surprise!"scolded Margaret as she took the two of them away from the twins "I could strangle them! Everyone went to so much effort to keep the secret."
"Does everyone know?"asked Alice
"It’s why they’ve all come. This is your engagement party. Hamish will ask you under the gazebo. When you say “yes”…--"
"But I don’t know if I want to marry him."
"Who then? You won’t do better than a Lord."
Alice and y/n looked at Hamish who blew his nose, studied the content of his kerchief, then folded it and put it in his pocket making y/n wince in disgust.
"You’ll soon be twenty, Alice. Same goes to you, y/n. You are twenty-one. That pretty faces won’t last forever. You two don’t want to end up like Aunt Imogene."said Margaret and they looked at their middle-aged aunt Imogene with over-rouged cheeks and a yellowing white dress that was too young for her. "And you don’t want to be a burden on mother, do you?
"No."they said together
"So you will marry Hamish. You will be as happy as I am with Lowell and your life will be perfect. It’s already decided."said Margaret and then Lady Ascot appeared suddenly
"Alice dear, shall we take a leisurely stroll through the garden? Just you and me?"said Lady Ascot and she jerked Alice away quickly.
Y/n looked at Margaret with a questioning look as she whispered;
"And of all the lords, Alice will have to marry Hamish?"asked y/n
"Oh hush you..."chuckled Margaret "Lowell has a cousin, very rich and handsome, and he told me that he would be the perfect match for you. Mother told me that he would come. He must be around here, somewhere."
"I don't even remember my past. How am I going to marry a man that I barely know?"
"I've already met him. You will definetelly like him. He is so irresistible. All women are falling for him."
"Maggie, aren't you getting married?"joked y/n snickering in the process, making Margaret glare at her playfully
"Just because I'm soon to be wedded doesn't mean that I cannot say my opinion."said Margaret "Anyway, once you meet him you'll instantly fall in love with him."
"What if I don't? A man who is rich and a flirt, it's not something I'm looking into."
"Oh, nonsense. Just wait till you meet him."
"I'll go find Alice..."said y/n and made her way to find Alice and when she found her, she and her saw Lowell kissing another woman in the garden
The woman ran off and Lowell came to them
"Lowell?"they said
"Alice. Y/n. We were… Hattie is an old friend."
"We can see you’re very close."said Alice angrily
"You won’t mention this to your sister, will you?"
"I don’t know. I’m confused. I need time to think."
"Yeah me too... I think she might want to know what her soon-to-be husband does."
"Think of Margaret. She would never trust me again. You don’t want to ruin her marriage, do you?"he went to grab their faces but they backed away
"Us? We're not the ones who sneaking around behind her back."exclaimed y/n
They turned to leave and they bumped into Hamish who looked very annoyed. He took Alice and pulled her under the gazebo. The shadows of the pillars fell on her like prison bars. Hamish went down to his knee. Alice noticed an artist immortalizing the moment and y/n by their mother.
"Alice Kingsleigh…"begun Hamish
"Hamish."
"What is it?"
"You have a caterpillar on your shoulder."he looked at his shoulder in disgust and he frantically brushed at his shoulder. "Don’t hurt it."
Alice let the caterpillar crawl onto her finger, then placed it gently onto a tree branch.
"You’ll want to wash that finger."said Hamish making y/n and Alice roll their eyes "Alice Kingsleigh, will you be my wife?'
The question hung in the air. Unsure of herself, unsure of her future, unsure of her own sanity in that moment, Alice stammered;
"I… I… well, everyone expects me to… and you’re a Lord… and my face won’t last… and I don’t want to end up like… but this is happening so quickly… I think… I… I…"she and y/n saw a white rabbit leaning against a pillar, glaring at Alice with undisguised impatience. The rabbit was wearing a blue waistcoat and had a pocket watch. Y/n blinked her eyes rapidly at the rabbit. Not because she found it odd, although it was, but for the familiarity. " …need a moment." and she turned and ran off to follow the rabbit. Y/n followed her.
They followed the White Rabbit across a meadow. Alice was glad that y/n followed her, meaning that she wasn't the only one who could see it.
"Wait!"they yelled
They lost sight of it. They looked around until they saw a rabbit hole. Both girls glanced at each other before investigating it.
"Hello?"said Alice, her voice echoing in the ''small'' hole
"Are you there?"asked y/n
The girls, impatiently, looked deeper into it until their hands slipped from the ground and both fell down the rabbit hole. Thay started screaming as they fell down the hole. They tried to hold themeselves from something but it was useless. This kept on for what seemed like hours until the bursted out of the floor. The girls, once they hit the ground, stood up and sw their hair going up. They realised that they were in the ceiling once they hit the actual ground. Once they got up, they looked around them and saw many doors. Without second thoughts, they started trying every door but it was useless. None of them opened. Alice and y/n saw a three-legged glass table with a small key sitting on top. Alice picked up the key and tried it in a door only to find out that it was too small for the lock. Y/n took it and tried it in a few doors but it was too small. She came upon a curtain and pulled it aside to reveal a little door about two feet high. The two girls tried the key in the door and it was the right one. They opened the little door and Alice bent down to look through to the other side. She tried to fit through the door, but her shoulders gor stuck, soshe quickly pulled back. They went back to the table and let the key. But now there was a bottle on the table. They looked at a label. “DRINK ME”. Alice sniffed the contents, recoiled and then shrugged
'It’s only a dream."she said and both girls took turns and drunk it
They started gagging and coughing until they saw that they shrunk. When they saw the little door they went back at it and tried to open it but it was locked. Then they saw the key on the table and tried to take it.
"You’d think she would remember this from the first time."
"You’ve brought the wrong Alice. Look! She even brought somebody else with her! Who is she anyway?"
"She’s the right one. I’m certain of it. As for the other girl, I'm not sure, but she seems familiar."
Y/n stopped and looked towards the door suspiciously, her eyes narrowed
"Who's there!?"she demanded "I know that you are there I heard you!"
"What happened y/n?"asked Alice while some gasps were heard making y/n look once again towards the source of the sounds
"I think that I hear someone."
They noticed a little box under the table, they opened the box and saw that it was a cake with “EAT ME” written out in ornate icing. They considered, looked up at the key high above on the table and then took a tiny taste of the cake then another takes another and they shot upwards rapidly. Their clothes fit again, but they kee growing. Once it stopped they took the key and drunk from the bottle and they shrunk again. They looked at the door and ran towards it, opened the door and walked outside. Alice looked around her in curiosity while y/n in a somewhat recognition and amazement.
"Wow."exclaimed y/n in awe, a grin making its way to her lips having as a result some fireflies in the shape of a horse toy and dragon to circle around her playfully, making her giggle happily.
The Beginning of the Misadventure at Ascot Manor
I’m well aware that Alice in Wonderland takes place during the Victorian era and, therefore, there was no king, but I’m taking many liberties with the royal family since this is a fictional universe and my OFC is a member of said Royal Family.
Additionally, this is an unedited version of this chapter, I will be coming back later to clean it up and fix any mistakes. Also this is very long- that's my bad.
"Believe you can and you're already halfway there." -Theodore Roosevelt
As the carriage rocked and swayed gently down the road, the sound of horses hooves meeting pavement rhythmically filling the air, Eleanor shifted nervously on the luxurious velvet seat. She was regretting agreeing to attend this affair, she truly had no obligation to go due to the fact that the family who were hosting barely had a title, but she’d promised her dearest Alice. While the Duchess enjoyed being able to wear her newest dress, and she felt truly beautiful, she also knew- and dreaded- that Lord and Lady Ascot would spend the whole evening attempting to ease themselves into her good graces. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d made their acquaintance, and it wouldn’t be the last surely, but they never seem to realise how much of a folly the effort was as Eleanor was well aware of the many occasions that they’d mistreated her friend.
She watched the buildings become sparser and sparser the further she got from Kensington Palace and the closer she came to the Kingsleigh residence. Occasionally she’d catch a glimpse of the vibrant red coats of the guards trotting alongside the carriage- she couldn’t leave the Palace without a full escort, she was the only heir to the Dukedom of Windsor after all. Her parents had only given life to one child before they met their untimely end, something Eleanor had lamented everyday until she’d been given Alice. It wasn’t often that the young Duchess of Windsor had been permitted off Palace grounds when she was growing up, fear for her life by her household and dear Uncle had resulted in strict safety protocols. However, every great once in a while, she would manage to convince her governess to organize an escort of guards and she’d get to visit the same park everyday Londoners would frequent with their children. And there, in that common park, was where Eleanor had met Alice Kingsleigh, the girl the entire city found odd but seemed to fit the Duchess’ poem like the perfect rhyme. Thus, despite her great reluctance to attend the Ascot’s gathering, she would never leave Alice to deal with the patronising, high-strung Lady Ascot and her precious, obnoxious, son Hamish on her own.
The carriage slowed as it finally reached the end of the long drive and pulled before the manor’s front door. Her guards pulled into a tight formation around the carriage and one to her left dismounted smoothly to knock firmly on the Kingsleigh’s front door. Not even a full minute passed before Mrs. Helen Kingsleigh swung the large door open and ushered her unhappy looking daughter towards the awaiting carriage. It did not seem to matter that Mrs. Kingsleigh has known Eleanor since she was a small girl, the widow never seemed to be able to see past her title and, thus, was never truly comfortable in the Duchess’ presence. Alice’s mother was a kind hearted woman, but she, like all other high society ladies, took appearance, politeness, and protocol too much to heart. It kept Eleanor from feeling settled in her presence as well, the mask of the Duchess having to remain firmly in place when she was nearby.
The guard who’d knocked on the door stopped the two Kingsleigh ladies before they could get any closer to the carriage holding their charge so they could search them, as politely and gentlemanly as was possible, for potential weapons. This was a process that was conducted everytime Eleanor and Alice visited each other, which seemed silly to the two young women since they had practically grown up together, but it set her guards’ minds at ease so Eleanor didn’t complain. She took the final private moment of the evening afforded to her to smooth over her pale blue gown and to readjust the complimenting dark blue shawl draped behind her back and over her elbows. When satisfied with the laying of her dress, she moved on to checking her hair that was plaited in an elaborate updo around the back of her head and adorned with white flowers. She looked like the royalty she was, and that was her aim. She was hoping, perhaps a bit naively, that if she reminded those in attendance this evening of her title that they wouldn’t dare disrespect Alice as they have in the past in front of her.
The door swung open and the same guard, Charles was his name, stood before her with his head bowed in respect. “May I present Mrs. Helen Kingsleigh, and her daughter, Miss. Alice Kingsleigh, Your Royal Highness.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant Charles. That will be all.” Her voice was high and feminine, but still firm and authoritative. The soldier stepped back and allowed the two blondes to enter the carriage, offering them both a hand as they did so, before giving his charge a final bow at the waist and closing the door firmly. “Hello, Mrs. Kingsleigh, my darling Alice.” The brunette sent her companions a genuine smile that Alice was quick to return as she settled down beside her, leaving her mother to sit on the bench opposite of them alone.
“Good evening, Your Royal Highness. You look absolutely beautiful, I just adore your gown.” Helen gave her a polite smile and nodded her head respectfully as she greeted her since she was incapable of giving her a proper curtsey. Eleanor could see Alice roll her eyes at her mother’s formality from the corner of her eyes and she had to hold back an amused snicker.
“Thank you, Mrs. Kingsleigh. You look radiant as well. Thank you for allowing me the company of yourself and Alice for the ride over, I would have been rather lonely with only my incredibly serious escorts if you had declined.
“There’s no need to thank me, Your Royal Highness. It was an absolute honour to receive your correspondence requesting our presence. Besides, you are Alice’s dearest- if only- friend. I could never deny my daughter the joy she radiates in your company.”
Eleanor and Alice both grimaced at the rather pointed comment about Alice’s lack of peers, one that applied to Eleanor even if Helen hadn’t meant it to, but the Duchess was quick to change the topic of conversation. She turned to her blonde counterpart and gave her a bright smile. “Alice, you look lovely. Blue is certainly your colour, not to mention that we nearly match!” Both girls giggled at their accidental coordination, but the light atmosphere is quickly disrupted when Helen huffed and leant forward to fuss over the blonde curls artfully arranged and retie the sash adorning her daughter’s waist.
Whatever lightheartedness Alice had managed to scrounge up in the company of her childhood friend quickly vanishes when her mother once again begins her never ending scrutinizing and redesigning of her appearance. She huffs and turns her gaze from Eleanor and over to her mother. “Must we go? I doubt they’ll notice if we never arrive.”
Eleanor couldn’t help but to silently long for the same as Alice, but she’d lived in this world long enough to know that there was no escaping the torment they were rolling towards. Polite society would never let the Kingsleighs live it down if they rudely fail to attend the event after sending word that they’d be there. She could probably have demanded they turn around and go back to the Palace for a quiet night instead, none would dare say an ill word about her, but she wouldn’t allow the Kingsleighs’ reputation to suffer such a blow. While she may agree with most of Alice’s opinions on polite society, she was also well aware it was unescapable.
“They will notice.” Helen intoned firmly, shaking her head in reprimand, her deft hands finally finishing retying the sash and moving instead to glide up her daughter’s waist so she could be positive her daughter was in appropriate attire, Alice wasn’t one known to follow direction easily. She frowned and pulled back, blue eyes blown wide in what seemed to be illogical surprise, horror, and shame as they darted towards Eleanor before back to her daughter. “Where’s your corset?!” She pulled back sharply to look the rest of Alice over searchingly, knowing it was unlikely the corset was the only thing her attire was lacking. Her look was warranted when she was met with the sight of her daughter’s bare shins. “And no stockings!”
“I’m against them.” Alice stated firmly, simply, as if that answered everything, and to Eleanor it rather did.
“But you’re not properly dressed.” Mrs. Kingsleigh protested in exasperation, her gaze drifting over to the Duchess in their company in unwarranted embarrassment only to be met with her amused and fond look. Eleanor settled back to watch the interaction in amusement. She’d let the mother-daughter duo bicker for a few more moments before she cut in and resolved it. Mrs. Kingsleigh's slight fear of her did come in handy every once in a while after all.
“Who’s to say what is proper? What if it was agreed that ‘proper’ was wearing a codfish on your head? Would you wear it?” Alice retorted fiercely, brows raised in a rhetorical question.
Eleanor had to cover her mouth with her white gloved hand to smother her amused smile because, in truth, if it truly was proper and fashionable to wear a codfish on one’s head, Mrs. Kingsleigh would be sporting one this very moment. She could see the tired frustration growing across the older woman’s face and decided now was the best moment to step in, before the two lost themselves in anger. “Now, Mrs. Kingsleigh, don’t worry. There will be too much going on for anyone to notice Alice’s state of dress. Besides, I am of the firm belief that compromises are an important part of life, and Alice is here and wearing a dress after all.” The truth of it was that the snotty men and women in attendance tonight would most definitely notice Alice’s lack of corset and stockings, especially due to the short hem of the blue dress she was sporting, but none would say an unkind word to the Kingsleigh women in her presence. Certainly, not after they arrived in her company and stepped from her personal carriage.
Alice, as a young, unmarried woman who still lived with her mother, was dressed almost like a young girl, with a lack of hoop skirt and petticoats, and a skirt that ended at her shins. However, Eleanor was dressed like a woman, in a perfectly hemmed floor length gown draped over several petticoats and a caged hoopskirt. She was an eighteen year old lady of her own means, and thus dressed like a woman grown unlike her dearest friend. Alice’s exposed legs would be considered slightly scandalous, but honestly, what was so shocking about a shin? It was folly, and honestly so was the fact that Alice still had to dress like a child rather than her nineteen years.
“You’re right, of course, Your Royal Highness. However-” Helen paused and reached up to unlatch the rather lovely necklace hung around her own neck before leaning forward to place it around Alice’s, hands deftly latching it closed with ease despite the fact that she was stretched uncomfortably and unable to see what she was doing. “There! You’re beautiful.” Eleanor smiled softly at that. Helen might occasionally put propriety over her daughter’s wishes, but she loved Alice truly. “Now, can you manage a smile?”
Alice huffed but the brunette at her side was quick to subtly elbow her in the ribs. Helen was trying, Alice could at least do the same. “Come now, Alice, we have a long evening ahead of us. We might as well try to have as much fun as we possibly can. Besides, you’re not going into the lion’s den alone.” The blonde haired, blue eyed girl turned to her chocolate hair, brown eyes companion and gave her a genuine smile before leaning to her left a bit to wrap her in a hug.
“I do appreciate you joining me. I don’t think I would have survived Lady Ascot’s never ending whining if you had decided to stay at the palace.
“Well, I couldn’t leave you to this madness all on your own, could I? You are my dearest friend, I’ll always have your back, darling.” They hugged for a few more moments, Helen watching them with a fond smile and sparkling eyes, before the carriage finally slowed to a stop. They could hear the chattering voices of those walking up the driveway die out at the sight of Eleanor’s regal carriage with the crest of the Dukedom of Windsor proudly and ornately decorating the side in shimmering gold. The young women shared a look when the voices of Lady Ascot, her husband, and the ever dreadful Hamish stop nearby. They’d both known that when they arrived the Ascots would be there to greet them, it would have been far worse than impolite for them to not be there to receive the Duchess of Windsor to their home. However, knowing that the interaction was going to happen didn’t mean they were happy about it.
“Step back!” She could hear Lieutenant Charles shout in warning and she knew that the crowd must have been closing in a bit too closely in an eagerness to see her step into view. “Step back I said!” Eleanor rolled her eyes and sent the nervous Mrs. Kingsleigh a reassuring look.
“Do not worry, Mrs. Kingsleigh,” she reached forward to put her own gloved hand comfortingly over the older woman’s, giving her a soft smile. “They’re just excitable. Lieutenant Charles will have them at a respectable distance before we depart from the safety of the carriage. No harm will come to you or Alice.”
“It is not myself I am worried about, Your Royal Highness. How is your safety guaranteed at an event like this? You’re going to be so very exposed and the guests haven’t been checked like they would be at the Palace. How will they secure the grounds?”
Eleanor beamed at the show of motherly concern, something she so rarely got to experience. “No one knew I would be attending before now, it would have been impossible for anyone to plan anything nefarious in preparation of my attendance, and I’ve brought plenty of men to comb over and secure the grounds. My guards have done this hundreds of times, they’re very good at their jobs, so don’t worry yourself too much. Try and enjoy your night.”
Helen nodded and smiled appreciatively, squeezing the hand atop her own in a fond gesture. “If you’re positive, Your Royal Highness.”
“I am.” She squeezed Helen’s hand back once before pulling back and angling her body towards the door. It was nearly silent outside and she could hear heavy boots approaching. It was time for them to leave the warm, friendly environment of her carriage and enter the tedious, precarious, environment of a high society garden party. The door swung open grandly and the cool evening air began trickling in, causing a light flush to rise to Eleanor’s cheeks and for her to be grateful she’d had the foresight to bring her shawl. The gloved hand of Lieutenant Charles, the commander of the regiment of guards she’d brought with her and thus the gentleman in charge of her protection tonight, reached through the open door. As protocol dictated, the Duchess would be the first to exit and would be closely followed by her companions. With one last shared look with Alice, the brunette daintily put her hand in the offered hand and rose to her feet. With a practiced ease she elegantly stepped out onto the step and then onto the drive, her skirts swirling around her feet as she did so and her chin raised high. She had to play her part perfectly tonight if she was going to keep anyone from spewing subtle poison towards her friend.
“Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Windsor!” A guard to her right, a young gentleman who was new to the Duchess’ household, proclaimed loudly, pridefully, clearly pleased to be in her employ. As one, the many people spread out in a half circle before her swept into bows and dipped into curtsies, eyes lowered to the ground in respect but excitement still visible on their tilted faces.
“Please, rise.” She finally said after a few moments of looking them all over, a smile painted across her lips. They stood just as simultaneously they’d bowed, dozens of eyes now eagerly taking in the woman before them. For the majority of the people here it was their first, and probably last, encounter with royalty. Her heeled boots clicked as she strode forward, Charles staying almost impossibly close to her left shoulder and his second in command (Alfred, she thought his name was) at her right one. “Hello, Lord and Lady Ascot.” She greeted as she stopped before them, the couple dropping into another hasty bow and curtsey when she addressed them before the former took her hand to press a kiss to her knuckles. She could feel her guards stiffen at the contact, prepared to intervene if needed, but she simply smiled politely at him. “It is a pleasure to be here.”
“It is an absolute honour for you to bestow the gift of your presence on our home and family, Your Royal Highness.” Lord Ascot was still bowing low over her hand when he managed to formulate a response, Eleanor having to firmly but politely tug her appendage from his grip and give him a final smile before her attention turned to the woman at his side. While Eleanor might have greatly disliked Lady Ascot after all she’d heard from Alice, she couldn’t allow that to be known, so she must greet her with all the grace her title demanded from her.
“Lady Ascot, thank you for having me in your home.”
“It is I who should be thanking you, You Royal Highness! Ascot Manor is positively honoured.” She curtsied once again as Eleanor smiled up at her (curse her 5’3 height) before she reached over to grab her son by his elbow and tug him closer. “May I present my son, Hamish Ascot, my husband’s heir.”
“A pleasure, Master Ascot.” She had to repress the grimace that threatened to break across her face when the red headed gentleman took her right hand in his and brought it to his lips. She could see what Alice meant when she complained about the younger Ascot man. Snobbish and odious didn’t seem like apt words to capture his demeanor; he was certainly his mother’s son. She was relieved when she felt the two Kingsleigh women finally come to stand behind her, their presence refreshing after being subjected to undesired kisses from both Ascot men. “I believe you know my dear friend Alice, and her lovely mother Mrs. Kinglseigh?” She questioned primly, but not unkindly, and she revelled in the poorly masked looks of horror that came across each face of the family before her as she turned to gesture the blondes forwards, her guards stepping aside to make room for them.
“It’s lovely to see you again, Lady Ascot.” Helen greeted politely, dropping into a quick curtsey and shooting Alice a look as she did so to prompt her into one of her own.
“Mrs. Kingsleigh, Miss. Alice.” Lady Ascot forced out, her smile pleasant but far from concealing her shock. “I’m thrilled you were able to join us tonight. I had no idea you were such good friends with Her Royal Highness.”
“Oh, yes,” Alice finally chimed in, sharing a secretly smug look with her friend. “Eleanor and I grew up together. We’re quite close.” The blonde was unable to hide her smile at the bewildered looks shot her way at the informal and honestly shocking use of the Duchess of Windsor’s christian name.
“Alice is my closest friend and only confidante.” Eleanor smiled, reaching out to take Alice’s bare hand in her gloved one to give it a squeeze before dropping it, her smile broadening as Lady Ascot and Hamish followed the gesture with wide eyes.
Lady Ascot swallowed thickly, surely remembering every snide remark she’s made to and about the blonde before her, before forcing a smile across her lips. “How wonderful.”
“Now, shall we make our way to the gardens?” Eleanor questioned, turning to look at those standing around them in a move that clearly meant to include them in the interaction. “I’m quite eager to see what you have arranged for this evening, Lady Ascot.”
“Of course, Your Royal Highness!” Lord Ascot cut in, nodding promptingly at his wife. “Lead the way darling. Let us get the Duchess into the gardens so the party may begin.”
“Yes,” Lady Ascot nodded vigorously, relieved to have an excuse to move focus away from her less than favorable acquaintance with Alice Kingsleigh and to what she felt she thrived at, event planning. “Let’s.” She led the way, skirts trailing behind her in a small train, and Eleanor was quick to follow, linking her arm through Alice’s to tug her alongside her. Everyone else walked behind them at a respectable distance, whispering amongst themselves, and her guards kept close by as they guarded not only their charge but the woman who meant so much to her. The rest of the regiment spread out, quickly moving to their designated area of the property to clear the area of threats and secure the property line.
The Ascot Manor was certainly nice as they strode through it, but it lacked the warmth that the Kingsleigh Manor, and even certain parts of Kensington Palace, contained. It was a grand house, clearly meant to impress, but it was not a home. Eleanor couldn’t help but wonder if the house reflected the family: of title, well dressed, perfect from the outside, but cold and lacking love. It wasn’t a pleasant thought.
The gardens took her mind off the dark path it had wandered down- it often did that, going off on its own and entering worlds of its creation- for they were beautiful. While nothing compared to the gardens of Kensington Palace, that did not keep Eleanor from appreciating them. She’d always loved nature. Even in perfectly manicured gardens the plants refused to be nothing but themselves. It didn’t matter what shape you trimmed a rose bush in, it was still a rose bush. She greatly admired that; it tended to remind her of Alice, truthfully. “You have a lovely garden, Lady Ascot.”
The woman spun around and beamed, thoroughly delighted by the compliment. “Thank you, Your Royal Highness! I’m so very pleased it is to your liking. I hope that you enjoy the party just as much.” Alice snorted quietly at the Lady’s simpering voice and exuberantly groveling words, causing Eleanor to have to suck her lips into her mouth in an effort to hide the smile twisting at her cheeks. People had done everything they could to earn her favor since she was nothing but a child, but she never stopped being amused by it- especially when Alice was around to find it so entertaining.
“I am sure I will, Lady Ascot. Don’t feel you must attend to my every need and stay by my side. Please, engage with your guests and enjoy your evening. There will be plenty of opportunities for us to get to know one another.” It was a subtle dismissal, but one the snooty woman quickly picked up. She dropped into a low curtsey before scurrying off to tell everyone she could that The Duchess of Windsor had complimented her gardens and to shriek at any servants who made even the smallest of mistakes- there was royalty in attendance after all.
When she was far enough away, Alice and Eleanor dissolved into giggles so forceful that they had to lean on each other for support and their stomachs began to cramp. “Did you see her face?” Alice laughed out, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. “When you introduced me I thought she was going to faint. Matters surely weren’t helped by how tightly she has her corset cinched.”
“It was marvelous!” Eleanor agreed, her giggles finally subsiding enough for her to straighten up. “Hamish turned the most horrid shade of red. I thought he might faint alongside his mother!” Their jesting at Lady Ascot’s expense is halted by the reappearance at said woman’s return.
“Alice, darling, we had expected you earlier and Hamish has been quite eager to dance with you. Go on now!” The faux syrupy sweetness in her voice when she addressed the blonde is almost enough to make her cringe, but she managed to withhold it as she allowed herself to be pushed towards the dance floor. Lady Ascot’s wording seemed to be her failed attempt to not make a dig at their punctuality, a dig she surely would have been apparent about if Eleanor had not been the one to bring Alice.
Eleanor turned to the red faced woman at her side with her dark, arched brows raised and her lips slightly pursed. “It seems I must apologize for Alice’s tardiness. I requested she join me in my carriage so her delay was not her own. Travel is a bit slower when you have a regiment of guards accompanying you.”
“Oh, no, Your Royal Highness! I did not mean to offend you. It is quite understandable that your accompaniment would slow you down, but your safety is, of course, the highest of priorities. Besides, the slight delay of your arrival did no harm, if anything it elevated the guests’ anticipation.”
“I’m glad I did not disrupt what I’m sure were thoroughly combed over plans.” Eleanor stepped away with a smile. “I fear I must make the rounds, Lady Ascot. It would be quite rude if I didn’t greet everyone.” The taller woman nodded and curtsied as Eleanor walked away without a second glance, hopeful that her next partner in conversation will be a bit more enjoyable. A butler passed by with a polished silver tray held aloft, crystal glasses of champagne balanced delicately on top and Eleanor was quick to stop him. His eyes blew wide when he turned back and realised just who stood before him, and he sloppily attempted to bow without losing his tenuous grip on the tray in his right hand.
“Y-Your Royal Highness! I-I’m so s-sorry! I did not mean to pass you by so rudely.”
She smiled kindly and gestured for him to straighten up. “You have nothing to be sorry for, sir.” His face seemed to crumple with relief, the air leaving his lungs in an audible whoosh. He sent her a smile and bowed his head in respectful concession before stretching the tray out before him so she could pluck a flute from its surface. “Thank you,” she smiled as he bowed once again in response before scurrying away, anxiety still radiating from his tense form. Before she could even think to raise the glass to her lips, Charles was standing in her line of sight with his hand outstretched. Her food and drink had been tasted for poison her whole life, this was nothing new, so she shot him an amused look before passing it over. The Lieutenant of the Duchess of Windsor’s Guard didn’t hesitate for a moment before taking a sip that, while large enough to make sure anything harmful would make itself known, was still small enough that she had plenty of drink left.
They waited a few moments for any effects to become apparent before he returned the glass to her. “Alright, You Royal Highness, it seems safe.”
She laughed and shook her head smally in amusement. “I figured it would be, Charles, as no one who’d wish to poison knew I’d be in attendance.”
He gave her a mildly reproachful look and tucked his hands behind his back. “It’s better safe than dead, Highness.”
She chuckled and nodded in amused agreement before finally taking a sip of her champagne, enjoying the crisp taste that flooded her mouth and the bubbles that tingled against her tongue. Her attention is drawn from Charles, who’d stepped back into position behind her shoulder, to Alice who was reluctantly dancing the Quadrille with an awkward looking Hamish. Her fingers had to press against her lips to hold back the laugh that tried to escape when Hamish began strutting like an uncoordinated peacock. “It seems that poor Alice has been unable to escape the attentions of Hamish Ascot.”
“Would you like Alfred to go and retrieve her for you, Your Royal Highness?” Charles asked gruffly, eyes narrowed on the redhead that was clearly making his charge’s friend uncomfortable. While normally it would be unthought of to charge onto the dance floor and pull someone away from a dance, no one would even think too long on it if it was clearly at the behest of the Duchess.
“Let’s give them a few moments and see if Alice manages to slip away on her own, she’s quite clever after all. No need to draw attention if it’s unneeded.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Their conversation seemed strained, with Alice’s face occasionally lighting up as it does whenever she has a thought that her father would have enjoyed only to fall when Hamish seemingly chided her. With each time Alice’s thoughts were obviously brushed away by Master Ascot, Eleanor’s ire grew. She was just about to take Charles up on his idea to rescue her friend when she caught sight of Lady Ascot gesturing vigorously at Hamish, who then stops dancing and steps away, saying one last thing to the blonde before him before scurrying away. Honestly, the man looked like he had a rod up his arse at all times, but never so much as when he walked with haste. Surely it couldn’t be comfortable to move in such a way. After a few moments of waiting for Hamish to be out of earshot, Eleanor quickly strode through the wandering gentlemen and the ladies on their arms and out to where Alice still stood, the other couples having had to move further away to avoid colliding with her as they danced.
Her guards helped her make her way to Alice uninterrupted, shooting anyone who came too close warning looks and helping to clear a path. “Alice!” She called, her friend turning to her with a still confused look, but Eleanor never got to ask her what Hamish had said or what whimsical ideas she’d had during the dance, because the two girls that Eleanor thought were the Chattaways were quick to join them. She only knew them because Alice had complained about them over correspondence once, although the written word couldn’t quite capture their oddity- an oddity very different from the ones usually used to describe Eleanor and Alice. They seemed to be two extensions of one being, they moved in sync and finished each other sentences, even their clothes were nearly identical except for the coloring of the stripes across their bodices and the dots decorating the gauzy fabric of the rest of the gowns. They were eerie, and put Eleanor on edge, something that her guards seemed to sense as they shuffled closer minutely.
“We have a secret to tell you,” one of the brunette girls leaned forward, whispering conspiratorially.
Alice didn’t seem too affected by their dramatics. “If you’re telling me, then it’s not much of a secret.”
Eleanor huffed out a quiet laugh at that, earning the attention of the eerie girls before her. “Oh!” They exclaimed as one before dropping into deep curtsies. “Your Royal Highness!” The one on the left with the blue accented dress continued before her sister took over.
“We didn’t see you! Our apologies!”
The Duchess simply waved the apology off and took a step closer, her own curiosity peaked. “Think nothing of it. However, you have raised my curiosity. What is this secret you wish to tell Alice?”
They seemed unsure as to whether or not they could continue with a member of the royal family witnessing their gossiping ways, but Alice, always more than happy to help Eleanor with a little mischief, leaned forward and whispered exaggeratedly, “It’s alright, go on. You can trust Eleanor.”
The sisters shared a couple looks, clearly conversing silently, before they began vocalizing their debate. “Perhaps we shouldn’t.”
“We decided we should!”
“If we tell her she won’t be surprised!” They turned back to the waiting friends, Eleanor amused by the rapid fire way the two sisters argued and Alice just seeming confused.
“Will you be surprised?”
“How could she possibly be surprised after you’ve told her?” Eleanor laughed, light blue eyes shining with amusement. “But you simply must tell us now that you’ve brought it up. It would be positively cruel not to.”
Alice nodded firmly in agreement. “Precisely. You have to tell us this supposed secret, how could you not?”
They seemed offended by the sentiment that they must do something, especially since Eleanor was making an effort to come off as just another young girl taking part in the rumour mill rather than a duchess in an effort to keep from intimidating the Chattaway sisters. Their eyebrows rose at Alice’s words and crossed their arms simultaneously. “No, we don’t.”
“In fact, we won’t.”
Alice and Eleanor shared a look and then a nod before the blonde leaned forward and threatened quietly, “I wonder if your mother knows that you two swim naked in the Havershim’s pond.”
“You wouldn’t!”
“Oh, but she would.” Eleanor chimed in, leaning forward as well. “Alice will do anything once she’s set her mind on something. It’s quite admirable, truthfully.”
“In fact,” Alice continued, the two girls intentionally completing each other’s thoughts in a manner much like the Chattaways were doing earlier, “there’s your mother now.” She sent them a smirk and then began to stride over to the older Chattaway, much to the sisters’ horror.
It evoked the desired results. “Hamish is going to ask for your hand!” It was blurted, frantic, and almost involuntary. Both Alice and Eleanor froze in mutual shock and horror. Oh no. Why on God’s green Earth would Hamish desire to wed Alice? They have absolutely nothing in common! It seemed, rather, that Hamish thought Alice slightly mad and she thought him rather… well… repugnant.
Their silent horror is interrupted by Margaret, Alice’s older sister and an acquaintance of Eleanor’s, who swept in with a scowl towards the Chattaway sisters. “You’ve ruined the surprise!” She wrapped her fingers around her younger sister’s wrist and pulled her away with Eleanor following after. The elder daughter of Helen was absolutely fuming, her steps heavy with anger as she dragged a limp, and in shock, Alice along. Eleanor finally sped up a tick so she could take Alice’s free hand in her own. “I could strangle them! Everyone went to so much effort to keep the secret.”
Alice finally seems to break free of reverie, her voice brimming with panic as she asked, “Does everyone know?”
“It’s why they’ve all come.” They finally came to a stop when the gazebo came into view, a crowd of people already forming around it and Hamish beneath it. “This is your engagement party. Hamish will ask you under the gazebo.” She was going to say something else, but Eleanor was quick to cut in before Margaret could continue pretending this was a happy occasion.
“Why on earth would Alice say yes?”
Margaret turned to look at her, their familiarity shown when she didn’t curtsey or use her title. “Because she’ll soon be twenty and Hamish will be a Lord, Eleanor.” She turned back to her sister and her expression softened, becoming almost pleading. “That pretty face won’t last forever. You don’t want to end up like Aunt Imogene.” The three women turned to look at Helen’s aging sister, the woman’s cheeks painted with two much rouge and the white dress in a style too young for her that she was draped in was beginning to yellow. “And you don’t want to be a burden on Mother, do you?”
Alice shook her head, blue eyes sadder than Eleanor had ever seen them. How could they ask this of her friend knowing she’d be miserable for the rest of her life? “No.” The blonde responded, shifting from foot to foot.
“So you will marry Hamish. You will be as happy as I am with Lowell, and your life will be perfect. It’s already decided.”
“She absolutely will not!” Eleanor cut in fiercely, using her grip on her friend’s hand to tug her away from Margaret and under her arm almost protectively. “Hamish would make her absolutely miserable, which you know quite well, Margaret. If you truly loved your sister, you would never force this on her.” Her tone was fierce and her icy eyes flashing dangerously in a way neither sister had ever seen. Alice would only be trapped in a involuntary, unhappy marriage with an oaf like Hamish after Eleanor had died, been buried, and her body was being eaten by the bugs that inhabited the deep earth.
“This is a family matter, Eleanor! It’s what’s best for her! You two won’t be able to get away with running wild forever. You’re women now, and it’s only a matter of time until you’re married to a duke, or foreign prince, and then what would become of Alice? You would doom her to spinsterhood so easily?”
“Not any easier than you would doom her to a lifetime of being told she is too odd, too outspoken, never just right! It’s unacceptable the way you’re trying to guilt her into being miserable till the day she dies. Besides, she’d never be a burden on your mother. If Alice chose to never marry she would always have a room at Kensington.”
How Margaret was going to respond would never be known, as Lady Ascot appeared at their sides with a look that said she was up to no good. “Your Royal Highness,” she greeted Eleanor a bit too sweetly, executing a slightly flawed curtsey before her focus moved onto the blonde tucked into the Duchess’ side. “Alice, darling, shall we take a leisurely stroll through the garden? Just you and me?” She didn’t wait for a response before tugging said girl from away from her friend and hooking her limp arm through her own. Alice shot her a panicked look as she was pulled away, but there was nothing Eleanor could do without causing more of a scene than either girl desired.
When they were gone, Margaret strode off without another word, a stark contrast to the two ladies’ usual interactions which were typically quite warm. However, it seemed that this disagreement had rather negatively impacted the way Alice’s sister saw her. Eleanor inhaled a deep, calming breath and spun around to face her ever present shadows.
“I think I would like to take a stroll through the woods before this disaster of a situation implodes in front of everyone present. What do you say, gentlemen?”
“It should be safe enough, Your Royal Highness, as we have men stationed throughout the forest for your security.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant Charles. Let us go before someone notices me standing by my lonesome and attempts to rectify that.” She lifted her skirts and strolled off, appearing to all the world as if she was completely at ease and not at all like she was terrified her friend would cave to the societal pressure to accept Hamish’s proposal and still absolutely livid at the nerve of one Margaret Kingsleigh Manchester.
The forest was much quieter than the party they’d just left behind, the air still except for the occasional chirping of birds or rustling of animals through the underbrush. Her attire wasn’t exactly conducive to hiking through the woods. It was summer, but the air still had a chill in it that came with the evening, and the weather was almost dreary. Her surroundings seemed to be washed out, the colours odd and the trees towering above blocking out the light of the sun. Her guards followed her dutifully, catching her by the elbows a couple times when a leaf covered root would trip her quite rudely. Despite the strange atmosphere, Eleanor vastly preferred her current activity to playing nice with the Ascots and their friends. It allowed her time to think, and to allow her cheeks rest from the previously ever present polite smile
Her quiet contemplation was disrupted by a particularly loud rustle to her left, her feet freezing in place as she turned to peer curiously into the underbrush. She didn’t know what about this one particular sound felt off to her, but for some reason it had caught her attention. She stepped forward slowly, her neck craned in an attempt to catch a glimpse of whatever had caused the rustle, but her sudden alertness seemed to alarm her guards.
“What is it, Your Royal Highness?” Charles’ voice broke the heavy silence, and she could see from his peripheral vision that his hand was resting on the hilt of his sword as he looked over her shoulder cautiously.
“Shhhh.” She hushed him gently, holding up a hand to keep them from advancing. “It’s surely just an animal, Charles. I just want to try and catch a quick glimpse.” She went to move forward again, but Alfred’s hand quickly and gently grabbed her by the elbow to prevent her getting any closer to whatever it was at a nod from Charles.
“Don’t go any closer, Ma’am. I’ll check it out.”
“No, Charles!” She scolded quietly. “You’ll scare it off.” The entire debate was pointless, as not even a moment later the rustle sounded again only to be followed by the sight of a white hare emerging from the shadows.
What was odd, however, was the fact that Eleanor swore that the animal was dressed in what seemed to be a blue waistcoat. It looked between the Duchess and her two guards before returning his attention to the brunette before him and seeming to raise a nonexistent brow. Her mouth dropped open in a gasp when he reached into his coat and withdrew a pocket watch.
“Wha-?” She started in wonder, but the hare seemed unaffected by her shock. He simply raised one paw- hand?- and wagged it firmly at the face of the pocket watch he was holding aloft. “What in the world?” She finally managed to breathe out before taking an involuntary step towards the impossible creature, but when her foot came down on the padded forest floor, the sharp crack of a twig snapping echoed out. The sound caused her and her guards, who seemed to be in just as much shock as she, to flinch simultaneously and seemed to break whatever trance they were all in. The hare gave her another prompting look before tucking the pocket watch back under his waistcoat and bounding off into the trees.
Margaret Kingsleigh
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Pronouns: she/her
Favorite Song: Lover by Taylor Swift
Big Three: Capricorn sun, Virgo Moon, Cancer rising
Margaret has always been practical, but that doesn’t always mean she’s wanted to be. She used to, as a little girl, want to be as wild and carefree as her sister, Alice, but she was the older Kingsleigh daughter, which meant to her parents, especially her mother, that she had to set an example. Margaret was always close with her mother, even if the woman wasn’t always exceedingly maternal, so she’s tried to be an example for Alice and everyone around her all her life. Some people think she’s a little basic, boring, and overly responsible, but then they find out she writes romance novels, and then they think she’s pretty alright. Does Margaret wish she was wilder now? Sometimes- but she’s also happy with her writing, her home, and her beloved fiancé, Philip.
- Margaret, so far, has written three romance novels: Sky Full of Stars, Riches to Rags, and Flirty and Thirty. She published the first right out of college, and she feels so grateful that she can make a living doing what she loves. She’s in the middle of writing her fourth novel, but she’s facing a bit of writer’s block. Hopefully she gets over it soon, as her latest deadline is coming up, and her editor is a stickler for those.
- Margaret is head over heels in love with Philip- she’d never admit it, but she has been since she met him. He’s like one of her romantic heroes come to life! She can’t wait to spend the rest of her life with him, having babies and reveling in their domestic bliss.
- Margaret is the most stressed-out when she visits her mother, Helen. She loves her mother dearly, but is also kind of intimidated by her. Well, maybe more than kind of. She just really doesn’t ever want to let her mother down, and is always trying the most to make sure that never happens- whether or not she ends up driving herself crazy.
- Margaret drinks a lot of tea. Like, so much tea. She’s not big on coffee, as she’s never really liked the flavor, but she loves tea, and as busy as she is, she needs caffeine, so she drinks all the tea she can. She also likes hot chocolate (with cinnamon!) in the fall and winter, but year-round, it’s teatime.
━━ ◤ ( LONG GOLDEN LOCKS, FLOWING BLUE DRESSES, ADVENTUROUS, WHIMSICAL IMAGINATION, AND SKY BLUE ) welcome, ALICE KINGSLEIGH, SHE/HER. before you move in, tell us what you remember: SLAYING THE JABBERWOCKY. excellent, now we are pleased to accept your offer to live OLD CREEK HISTORICAL DISTRICT, and your new job as LIEUTENANT at DECIMATION POLICE AND FIRE STATION is waiting for you to begin. ( TIM BURTON’S: ALICE IN WONDERLAND AND CAITY LOTZ )
THE BASICS
NAME: Alice Kingsleigh NICKNAMES: Al, Lieutenant BIRTHDAY: May 4th, 1986 AGE: 34 PRONOUNS: She/Her LAST KNOWN MEMORY: Slaying the Jabberwocky and being given the vial of its blood to return home with. ORIGINATION: Tim Burton’s: Alice in Wonderland FACECLAIM: Caity Lotz
THE DETAILS
FAMILY: Charles Kingsleigh (Father), Helen Kingsliegh (Mother), Margaret Manchester (Sister, Married) Henry Kingsleigh (Brother) THREE FAVORITE THINGS: Lavish and over the top tea parties with cake and cucumber sandwiches. All pastel colors, she enjoys the light they bring in. Books, Alice loves books of adventure and mysteries and reads them any chance she can get, there’s always one or two on her desk. EDUCATION: High School Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. SKILLS: Swordplay (Alice has a lot of different swordplay experience from Kendo, to Fencing, and even just some performance type stunts. Alice has a lot of knowledge on the Criminal Justice system to use as she sees fits, she’s also learned from her profession how to be inquisitive in the right areas, as well as creative which is one of her best skills. HEADCANONS: Alice is certainly known to ask the oddest questions or make up and tell the wildest tales for the fun of it. If anyone's looking for an interesting story to pass the time or get in some long winded random discussion Alice is there and she’s glad to talk oddities.Alice is a very well traveled and open minded person, she’s courageous to a fault which often leads to some very impulsive decisions. WHAT THEY’RE PLANNING TO DO IN DECIMATION: Alice was the misfit of her family, it was always known and very well discussed. She simply could not be put into the mold her family wanted for her and though she loved them all dearly eventually when she found the moment to leave for her own adventures she did. She knows it was simply against her mother plans and broker her sister and brothers fault as they already had a missing piece from their late fathers sudden demise but she was Alice hadn’t been at home since he died, being the only one of the Kingsliegh’s who took the time to understand her. So leaving her lavish home in in the United Kingdoms Alice went to America where she eventually found herself paying her way through college on her own and joining a police academy on a whim but eventually it would be a career she excelled in and had a passion for. Criminal Justice became her passion. She found herself in DECIMATION, KANSAS eventually and this is where she’s decided to stay. Alice ‘walking dreams’ don’t bother her too much. In fact she actually enjoys them a little. The Mystery of them and the other worldly vibe of them intrigues her more than anything and considering how she generally is her enjoying the oddity is probably to be expected.
