Alice rolled her eyes. She could sense how hard Margaret was trying and she just….couldn’t. Her mind was too dreadfully sober for this. “I’m fine,” she said finally, taking another bite of her croissant. “It’s not like you need me around with Philip there all the time. How’s dear old Phil?” She looked at her then, a forced smile and wide eyes. “We don’t hang out because we have nothing in common.”
Margaret sighed, trying to keep it as quiet as she could so Alice couldn’t sense her effort- though maybe she already did. She wished she hadn’t finished her coffee hours ago. She needed to sip or munch on something to fill the awkward pauses, like Alice was doing. “Philip is doing well! I wish you too would get to know each other better. You’d get along, I bet.” No, they wouldn’t, but at the very least they could try. “You don’t mean that. Of course we have things in common! We’re sisters!”

Alice had seen Margaret the moment she had stepped into the cafe. She normally did everything in her power to avoid her sister, but by the time she had gotten her croissant and iced coffee it was too late to do as such. She didn’t want to sit with her. She didn’t need the judgement and the worry and she honestly was about to just start walking away and eating before she was noticed, but she had been spotted. So she begrudgingly took a seat across from her sister and sipped on her coffee without a word. Then she realized if she didn’t speak, she would get more questions, so she set her coffee down and gave out a little “Hello Margaret,” before taking a small bite of her croissant.
Margaret’s eyes must’ve glazed over from staring at her screen for so long, as she didn’t even realize she was talking to her own sister at first. But it was indeed Alice, and she couldn’t just turn away her own sister. “How are you, Alice?” she asked, trepidatious. “It’s so nice to see you! You’re always at that Wonderland place, so we never get to hang out at home or anywhere else.”

Margaret had been writing all day. Again. She hadn’t looked up from her laptop in hours, and when she finally did at this moment, she noticed that the cafe she sat in was much more crowded than it was earlier. She also noticed someone looking for a seat in the cafe, and seemed unable to find one. When they met eyes, she beckoned them over. “Please, sit here! I won’t be much longer anyway.”

Margaret had spent all day working on her latest romance novel, Night of the Knight. Her agent was this close to wringing the novel out of her with their bare hands, and at this point, she thought she might let them. Between keeping an eye on Alice, frequent visits with her mothers, and planning the perfect wedding with Philip, Margaret was swamped. Luckily, her dear Philip had texted her to meet him at the Snuggly Duckling, where he would come after work. Sweet, handsome, Philip, plus a night out and a good drink- that sounded just perfect. But another man seemed to be eyeing the same chair Margaret had been saving for Philip. “Oh, sorry, that’s taken,” she said with an apologetic smile.

Pronouns: she/her
Favorite Song: Lover by Taylor Swift
Big Three: Capricorn sun, Virgo Moon, Cancer rising
Margaret has always been practical, but that doesn’t always mean she’s wanted to be. She used to, as a little girl, want to be as wild and carefree as her sister, Alice, but she was the older Kingsleigh daughter, which meant to her parents, especially her mother, that she had to set an example. Margaret was always close with her mother, even if the woman wasn’t always exceedingly maternal, so she’s tried to be an example for Alice and everyone around her all her life. Some people think she’s a little basic, boring, and overly responsible, but then they find out she writes romance novels, and then they think she’s pretty alright. Does Margaret wish she was wilder now? Sometimes- but she’s also happy with her writing, her home, and her beloved fiancé, Philip.
- Margaret, so far, has written three romance novels: Sky Full of Stars, Riches to Rags, and Flirty and Thirty. She published the first right out of college, and she feels so grateful that she can make a living doing what she loves. She’s in the middle of writing her fourth novel, but she’s facing a bit of writer’s block. Hopefully she gets over it soon, as her latest deadline is coming up, and her editor is a stickler for those.
- Margaret is head over heels in love with Philip- she’d never admit it, but she has been since she met him. He’s like one of her romantic heroes come to life! She can’t wait to spend the rest of her life with him, having babies and reveling in their domestic bliss.
- Margaret is the most stressed-out when she visits her mother, Helen. She loves her mother dearly, but is also kind of intimidated by her. Well, maybe more than kind of. She just really doesn’t ever want to let her mother down, and is always trying the most to make sure that never happens- whether or not she ends up driving herself crazy.
- Margaret drinks a lot of tea. Like, so much tea. She’s not big on coffee, as she’s never really liked the flavor, but she loves tea, and as busy as she is, she needs caffeine, so she drinks all the tea she can. She also likes hot chocolate (with cinnamon!) in the fall and winter, but year-round, it’s teatime.
