Conceptually? Fairyland Lovers was SO cool
I STILL want a Guardian crossover, or simply a Fairyland Lovers story divergent plot. The initial version of the lead character, in the past, before meeting the woman he falls for is so interesting to me. He has Hei Qi's impulsivity and playfulness and fear and curiosity except it was just the main characters ENTIRE self. Not part fractured off. But the whole complete him. Then he lost the woman he loved, and he HIMSELF (as in all of him) was so absolutely gutted by it he realized he'd do anything to get her back. Anything... cross any line... and so he sealed off the part of himself that would do such awful things. The part of him that was "Hei Qi" got sealed up, and the part of himself he Allowed himself to remain? Became a man with intense self control and even a bit of denial and refusal of happiness indulgence to be honest. Too terrified he'd become the kind of man his old lover would have regretted knowing. Terrified of destroying the growth he's done. He didn't face the broken part of himself when she died, he just buried it (hei Qi) to the point he views it as so dangerous a part of him he tried to get rid of that part of his own Self.
So he's a character who broke past breaking when she died, and that's usually where characters die or go past a point of no return on their trajectory. He instead rips out that Too Much part of himself and isolates it and buries it. It's just a lot to even sit and think about. It's like if Shen Wei grieved Kunlun so thoroughly (and hadn't been buried 10k years) that Shen Wei decided to rip out the brave warrior version of him who loved Kunlun, so that Shen Wei would stop impulsively protecting Zhao Yunlan in the future and acting irrationally to try and help him, would stop smiling warmly, would not even face grieving Kunluns loss by literally locking away the feeling. It's a sort of intense self destruction. And Bai Qi does it. And once he does lock up that now compartmentalized part of him? He's not the man he once was. He's a version missing significant chunks of himself who now grows for centuries without them a part of his personality anymore. The parts that were like the old him, that are left, he further represses and controls for centuries until even though he has that same old potentially to Re-evolve to the kind of man he was when he met his first lover? He's built up such a new personality and developed so differently that even if he ends up the kind of person he tends toward being? It's going to be different. He'll never be like the old him again, not even the version he was at his happiest and maybe "best" with his first love. That person is gone forever, because Bai Qi destroyed so much of himself.
And then, and yes I could go on about the above ramifications for ages... his present self meets a woman who looks like his dead love. He's aware it's not the old lover. He's aware, logically. He ends up getting to know her and falling in love with this new person though. And THAT is my favorite execution of the romance plot "immortal who meets their reincarnated lover/someone who looks like them". Guardian got a big Exception from me because it's actually time travel and actually the same exact lover. And Book version I'm still reading so I'll comment on that later. Love and Redemption is my Favorite execution of the storyline (especially when compared to Eternal Love type similar shows I like significantly Less). I HATE these type stories if the immortal treats the new person like their old lover. I hate these stories if the immortal is automatically in love and doesn't recognize this is a NEW person as far as life experience and personality and the NEW person may not like or love them! May not even click with them! It's like meeting an ex after 40 years and widely different lives (with a huge dollop of amnesia of your past years when you did know each other)! I'm not that old and if I met someone I crushed on in elementary, we may have nothing in common now and no reason to even acknowledge any more than "Oh hey yeah we did go to the same elementary." I HATE when these type stories don't recognize this. The immortal was in love, is GRIEVING for sure, and is definitely conflicted that they've met either their lover in a new life or a totally new person who looks like their dead lover. But as far as the actual romance developing? It needs to still functionally start like 2 people initially meeting and getting to know each other and fall in love. It's just the immortal will have more baggage/fears. Fairyland Lovers does this story the way I deeply love and prefer (as does Rattan, Love and Redemption, even Guardian I'd argue while Shen Wei is suspicious if Zhao Yunlan is kunlun or reincarnated or just a look a like and irrationally super protective/emotionally fucked up about it, shen wei still cautiously handles MEETING and getting to know Zhao yunlan under the assumption it could be a new person with new values/interests/beliefs/etc. If a story like this can't at least do that? Wowza am I gonna tune out fast. Xena also did this well, hell I just started The Vampire Diaries and while it's handwaved a bit so far I also appreciate it's already a point of conflict that Elena is not Katharine and wants people to be treating her like a new person).
My point is it's an excellent romance for Bai Qi. His past lover is dead. The part of him who got so fucked up when he died he realized he'd cross any line (even lines she would have not wanted him to)? He literally compartmentalized that part of himself so much he locked it away and "removed" it. Talk about moving on after a relationship, he fundamentally changed his entire self and the part of him most attached by his old love just to try and move on without becoming a destructive person. He meets a new woman in the present. His fears of how intensely He can and HAS loved someone surface, the fact is he has the POTENTIAL to become that person again who'd do anything to save a lover. He literally locked up the part of himself who went off that deep end last time. But wirh a new love, comes the new chance for him to yet again develop into that kind of person, with those traits in the new version of him he's so carefully worked on controlling. She's not his ex lover personality wise, and it's gutting him on some level cause it reminds him of his grief (which yet again - last time really broke him past the brink to the point he had to lock that whole chunk of himself away). And it's hopeful and new. Because the person who loved his old lover, that Bai Qi, literally was destroyed by himself after she died. He is a new person in some ways. And this new version of him is capable of finding love, loving. Maybe having a good outcome. He can never go back to the past, but there is a wide open future of so many possibilities.
I just find it so interesting how the major conflict in Fairyland Lovers is this mainly internal battle the main character is having with who he was, can be, could be. So much to delve into there. I wish there'd been like 10 past setting episodes because I think there's so much interesting stuff to explore of who he was before he met his first love, more of how he changed with her, how thoroughly he broke when she was gone, and how different of a person he made Himself when he tried to cope after that and tried to be a person she'd be proud of while also destroying part of himself that loved her so much in the first place to give her a chance TO let him care what she'd appreciate in him. Also the whole sci fi (but more like gods on earth) premise seemed really fun, but got very much minimized. I think the show was based on a book. If I liked the show... would I get more of that past stuff in the novel I wonder, would it be worth reading?

Underrated book 5 moments
🦋 Hua Cheng being salty about Qi Rong copying his blood rain aesthetic with the gaudy hanging corpse foolishness.
🦋 Xie Lian fully shoving a butchers knife in Qi Rong's mouth for endangering his San Lang.
🦋 Banyue offering to put the small, sick Hua Cheng in a little pot because that made her feel better too.
🦋 Pei Ming and his "childhood friend" naming his sword after their ship name (no homo tho).
🦋 Ling Wen & Pei Ming being actual best buddies.
🦋 Everyone fighting for their lives in the stomach of a mountain spirit while Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are having quality cuddle time.
🦋 Qi Rong profiling Xie Lian as a bottom.
🦋 Xie Lian seeing Quan Yizhen's proper autistic hyperfixation on martial arts and going "same :D".
🦋 Pei Ming acting like the great⁶ uncle he is and telling his nephew to shut up and eat his dinner.
🦋 This illustration. Look at that scary little face. Look at Xie Lian having the time of his life. 10/10

DAY 3 #ZYLBY48week2021 | Reincarnation
Hei Qi / Ye Zun
 extra ficlet below
"Will you stop following me?" Ye Zun finally snaps, turning around to confront that shadow that had been stalking him for days? Weeks?
Regardless of how long it has been, and what his brother said, Ye Zun is fed up.
"I know you’re there.”
A man steps out from the corner and reveals himself. He is tall, mostly legs, and has hair that seems to have never met a comb before. Ye Zun admits he looks quite handsome but he is too much of a mess to confirm that.
The man suddenly approaches him, casually stepping inside Ye Zun's personal boundary until he is forced to step —  no—  walk backward. The man does not stop and he proceeds to push Ye Zun into a wall. He slams his palm, flat on the hard surface beside Ye Zun's head, and grins like a predator who had trapped his prey.
"Who are you?" Ye Zun glares at him, his face half scared and half ready to throw hands if he needed to.
He smirked. "The cat wasn't lying. You really have no memory of me." The man's eyes scan Ye Zun's face marveling at every feature his sight landed on as Ye Zun grows more uncomfortable at how he perceives him.
"What cat?"
"The black cat that enjoys your touch too much. Da Qing? He told me everything before I dumped him in the trash."
"You are insane." Ye Zun said, "cats don't talk."
"With enough threat, they will. And darling, that cat does more not-cat things than just talk. But let’s not get distracted. I’m here to take what you owed from me”
Ye Zun folds his arms and sets a frown on his lips. He looked at the man more carefully and was certain that if he had met him before he would remember him. “I do not recall owing someone like you.”
“Yes, yes, yes I know. New life, clean slate, and all that jazz. But since you’ve forgotten, let me remind you how once upon a time your brother chained me to a pillar while you drained my soul. But guess what? You left a small tiny piece of it and now that will be your biggest problem.”
Pillars? Souls? Ye Zun couldn’t believe that he is giving him his precious time just to listen to this. “You truly are crazy.”
The man scowls and scratches his head, messing his already bird’s nest of a hair. His eyes then lit up, as if he remembers something important, “But I’m right that you have a brother. A twin brother…your dearest gege?”
Ye Zun’s arms fell as his mouth hangs. This man can say whatever he wants to say to him and corner him like this, but not his brother. His gege who is too precious, too trusting and too kind for people like these.
However, as if on cue Shen Wei suddenly appears from nowhere and pulls the man away from Ye Zun. The man stumbles back but quickly regains his balance before he even reaches the moving traffic running along the main street.
“Speak of the devil.” The man looks impressed, happy even, to see that Shen Wei came.
Shen Wei steps in front of his brother, “Didi, did he hurt you?” he asks without even turning to look at Ye Zun.
“No broken bones, ge.” Ye Zun assures.
“Good.”
Shen Wei stares at the man who answers his intense eyes with a snigger. When the stranger takes a step on the side, Shen Wei angles himself to it. When he takes a step on the other, Shen Wei mirrors it. Ye Zun sees how focused and careful Shen Wei is and wonders if his gege knows him.
“...Hei Qi.” His brother mutters a name, answering Ye Zun.
The man, Hei Qi, widens his eyes in slight surprise, “Well lookie here. Did you get some special pass in the wheel and you get to retain your memories while he doesn’t?”
“Do you know him ge?” Ye Zun quietly asks behind him.
“No.” His brother lies.
Shen Wei suddenly attacks and Hei Qi blocks his punches quickly. Ye Zun is fully aware that his brother knows how to fight, as, between the two of them, he exercises more and had dutifully attended all their extra classes when they were younger. But to see him in action like this against someone who moves likes an expert, Ye Zun doubts that this skill simply came from their taekwondo classes.
But Hei Qi obviously knows what he is doing and in no time turns the fight where he is the one attacking while Shen Wei tries to block for his life. Ultimately, Hei Qi pushes him back until he almost falls if Ye Zun hasn’t caught him quickly.
“The mind is the same but your body is human? Very interesting.” Hei Qi notes.
Ye Zun worries for his brother and how he can seriously get hurt if they continue like this. “Can you stop? We don’t know you —  or at least I don’t know who you are but can you leave us alone!”
Hei Qi throws his head back and laughs from his chest. “After you used me like a battery for you to get this kind of happy life, you want me to leave you alone? No! I am here to take what you owe from me.”
“What do you want then!” Ye Zun screams, willing to give anything in order for them to get out of here unscathed.
“Your body.”
Shen Wei pushes himself off of Ye Zun, ready for another round, but Ye Zun pulls him back. Shen Wei grits his teeth in anger, “I don’t know how you survived and how you crawled out of hell but you will never take my brother from me as long as I live.”
Hei Qi sways from side to side, enjoying the look on their faces too much. “I can and I will—” but just then he pauses and lifts his nose to the air, then scrunchies it as if he smells something foul, “but maybe not now. Let’s continue where we left off some other time.”
Ye Zun feels a little relieved when he sees Hei Qi walking away from them. But then he turns back and licks his lips, “don't miss me too much, darling. I will always find you. You have no idea how much I missed you.”
Shen Wei instinctively pushes Ye Zun behind him again, while Ye Zun shivers.
Zhao Yunlan opens his eyes and finds himself in the bathroom. Both hands are gripping the edge of the sink while his face and bangs are dripping wet. He looks up and sees the face in the mirror giving a different expression from the one he is wearing.
“Hei Qi. You’re done early?”
Hei Qi, whose real name was Bai Qi, is the remnants of the soul of a powerful and legendary General from a long time ago. He is the dark side of Bai Qi, or at least that part of his soul where all the regrets, sin, and anger come together until it turns into a malevolent spirit detached from its original existence. After he was punished thousands of years ago, he even lost his form and thus had to live from one body to another.
Or at least that’s what Zhao Yunlan’s father told him when he first introduced the spirit to him. He was the secret of the Zhao family that he inherited when he came of age. He has hosted Zhao Xinci before and his grandfather before that. So Hei Qi had been with him even before his first memories and probably knew more about himself than him.
Hei Qi looks happy inside the mirror. Something that never sounds good to anyone else aside from Hei Qi. “I got to talk to him today, Lanlan.”
The two are quite close. Among his hosts, Zhao Yunlan is probably Hei Qi’s favorite, but then again the young man is still quite young, his problems with his hosts usually arise when they reach the age of forty or once they get married. Then it was all, ‘how dare you sleep with my wife too.’
“That person you’ve been stalking? Congrats. How is it?” Zhao Yunlan asks as he rubs his face with a towel.
“My darling is still as beautiful as temptation itself.” Hei Qi answers.
“You should introduce me someday.” Zhao Yunlan steps out of the bathroom and turns to another mirror, finger combing his hair while he continues to talk with Hei Qi.
“Maybe when he doesn’t hate me.”
Hei Qi notices that they are grabbing one of their jackets and looking for a sock that seems clean enough to wear from a pile of clothes on the floor. “Are we going somewhere?”
“Yes, since you’re done we can go investigate something in Dragon University. Chief duties.” Zhao Yunlan explains as he dons his jacket.
“Murder I hope?” Hei Qi’s glee resonates inside Yunlan’s head.
“Yep. Murder.”
Zhao Yunlan dumps his ass on his bed and starts putting on his boots while Hei Qi is still talking in his head. “Nothing beats murder. Special case or not. It’ll never be boring.”
Zhao Yunlan stands up, grabbing his phone and his keys and shoving it in his pockets. “Ah, and btw,” he suddenly remembers, “please stop dumping Da Qing inside the trash. You know he sleeps on the bed.”
“Your cat knows a lot of things we don’t. I’m only doing my best to make him share those things with us. It could be useful someday.”
“I’ll let him talk when he wants to talk. So for now just stop.”
“Okay.”
Zhao Yunlan leaves the apartment, shutting his mouth as he walks. He has been trained to look normal, to not look like someone who has a malevolent spirit constantly talking with him inside his head. But Hei Qi feels like he has been wary of something, and the feeling becomes stronger as their motorcycle gets closer and closer to Dragon University.

"Jiang Cheng never thought of Wei Wuxian as an equal or a brother because he never explicitly stated it."
Oh no, its almost as if there is someone who continuously scolds them for hanging out together much less refer to each other as equals....
its also as if them referring to each other as that could possibly add fuel to existing rumours which could potentially ruin their family life.

OMG XIE LIAN
OMG THEY KEPT THIS
Oh my GOD
THE CONCERN IN HIS VOICE AND ON HIS FACE
HUA CHENG LOOKS LITERALLY TERRIFYING IN HIS RAGE
I appreciate that the animators didn’t draw him “pretty” in this shot
They drew him HATEFUL
Angular, with heavy shadows
Which can almost be called ugly
In a sense that that’s how you draw characters wheh you want to emphasise that they are evil
And this is PERCECT DECISION
Because THIS IS WHAT HUA CHENG IS THINKING ABOUT HIMSELF
He thinks that this side of him IS MONSTROUS AND MUST BE UGLY TO XIE LIAN
YET LOOK AT THE WAY XIE LIAN LOOKS AT HIM-
