Making Birch, a heavy gunner, someone outwardly calm and sensitive is probably my favorite narrative decision, because the moment people learn he's the heavy gunner for the 398th, is when people run-

If anything, that roadmap Krieg tease undersold how much the Death Korps would be getting in the new year. Between the existing tanks and Veteran Guardsmen, this is at least as much of an army as any of the old pewter regiments had in the '90s. Arguably more.
Starting from the top, Lord Marshal Dreir is a great alternative to the Lord Solar for the role of, "general on horse mount," and stands in his stead among any of the classic regimental heroes.
And if your gonna have one guy on a horse mount, you really ought to have an entire cavalry charge. I think they might have gone a little ham on the Krieg steeds' claws, though - I liked them better a more like goat hooves, so that they look nearly like horses be not quite. Somebody at the studio clearly decided that's insufficiently brutal.
Combat engineers are another adaptation of an existing Forge World kit that looks great. Loving the little screw drive remote mine, although it looks like it's about twice as big as it ought to be to read better on the tabletop.
Artillery emplacements are big Krieg energy and these new heavy guns certainly deliver. The quad mortar is back again, as are two flavors of cannon and a rocket battery. Wouldn't look at all out of place alongside the classic Basilisk platforms (which, who knows, may still make their way to plastic), or the next entry in the new lineup.
Classic heavy weapon carriages, once again in the 2nd Edition style. These are all a little bit more in tune with the nostalgic approach to Imperial Guard than the more modern take on the concept found in the Cadian Field Ordnance Battery, and I think helps them to fill a unique niche from the standard heavy weapons teams.
Rounding things out are a brand new command squad featuring not one but two Commissars (Lord and cadet), vox, standard and chemyst. I think adapting the quartermaster would have probably been a better pull but they seem to be leaning hard into the harsh environment specialists aspect. That combat accountancy servo skull goes hard, though.
Overall, solid. Very happy to see, and when taken alongside the many Solar Auxilia tanks now or soon to be available, represents one of the most comprehensive updates to a range yet seen.

From the notes of Capt. Alfred Jones: "Davie was a bus and the 'Flying Fortress' moniker seemed to pass her by, but it was a ship with a brave crew. The trudge of getting back to England from enemy territory is a story for another day. I miss her and sometimes I miss the boys we lost that day."

[nerd things & acknowledgements below cut]
Notes on the B-17F... The B-17F was an upgrade of the previous E model, with several notable changes: A one- or two-piece plexiglas nose cone, as opposed to the ten-paneled cone of previous versions. Reinforced landing gear allowed for a greater maximum payload, from 4,200 lb (1,900 kg) of ordnance to 8,000 lb (3,600 kg). Flight and combat range of the F model was improved by 900 mi (1,400 km) with the addition of nine self-sealing rubber fuel cells in the wing root, aka, "Tokyo tanks". The F model was generally characterized by being tail-heavy - which lead to part failure - and woefully undefended from the front; the early F models had no front-facing armament, leaving a 60° blind spot to the direct front of the aircraft - a flaw which was exploited by German pilots, who held air superiority. Later F models would see a list of possible available modifications (factory and field) such as inserting two .50 caliber machine guns into the nose cone to solve the blind spot. Other modifications to later F models were bulged cheek turrets, as opposed to the window-mounted guns of earlier iterations, and the available addition of the iconic "Bendix" chin turret. The chin turret is far more common on the subsequent G "gunship" variant. ("Dear Davie" is an early F model without the nose mount, bulged cheeks, or chin turret.)
*This model production block, serial no., and fate are borrowed from real-life B-17F #42-29670, "Thundermug." "Thundermug" was an aircraft that originally served in the 333rd Bomb Squadron/94th Bomb Group alongside my great-grandfather and his usual steed, "The Gremlins Hotel." It was transferred to the 544th BS/384th BG, at which point it went Missing in Action over Hamburg from flak/aa-fire; 8 of its crew became POWs while 2 were KIA. I have had the honor to speak to descendants of both of its crews and help them research "Thundermug"; I wish to voice a mere glimpse of their stories in a unique way.
**All names of Alfred's crew are either cobbled-together family names throughout our history here or entirely fictitious - though some were inspired by real people whom I grew up with stories of. All inspirations were individuals that lived good lives post-war.

Phoenix Hawk IIC
Though in many ways it resembles the combat prowess of the Inner Sphere's Charger, the Phoenix Hawk IIC is a fixture of many second-line Clan Clusters and front-line Successor State regiments during the Word of Blake Jihad.
During the reign of the lackluster Khan Jacob Masters, Clan Steel Viper entered a period of stagnation in all areas, including technological development. In a rare fit of innovation at the time, though one many observers considered oddball at best, the Steel Viper Scientist Caste decided to base a new assault BattleMech on the venerable 45-ton Phoenix Hawk chassis. At 80-tons, the resulting design was almost twice as heavy as the original, though it is severely undergunned for an assault 'Mech due its incredible speed for a 'Mech its size. Following the introduction of the OmniMech by Clan Coyote just three years later however, the Phoenix Hawk IIC largely saw itself relegated to second-line status.
Built around the Type 79 400 XL engine mounted on an Endo Steel skeleton fitted with five Jump Jets, the Phoenix Hawk IIC features as close as possible ground speed and agility to the original Phoenix Hawk as can be reasonably achieved on an 80-ton assault 'Mech, making it an effective fast interdiction unit. Ten and half tons of ferro-fibrous armor provide eighty-one percent of the maximum possible protection at its weight class, while ten Double Heat Sinks are sufficient for the weapons array.
The main armament of the Phoenix Hawk IIC is the paired Ultra Autocannon/10s, each of which has a three-ton ammunition bin it can draw on. The cannons are mounted in twin pods on either side of torso to the rear, a feature allowing technicians easy access to the weapons and reducing maintenance time both at base or in the field. A pair of Machine Guns provide extra firepower that is most useful against unarmored infantry. Despite the Clans' disdain for it, the 'Mech's weaponless arms are almost ideal for physical combat.
The Phoenix Hawk IIC would gain a new vitality following Clan Jade Falcon's ejection of the Steel Vipers from the Inner Sphere in 3061. Seeking to rapidly rebuild their weakened touman, Khan Perigard Zalman approached Clan Diamond Shark offering captured Heavy Laser technology and the plans for the ancient design in return for the production of a new variant for the Steel Viper's second-line clusters. Initially observers were curious why the Sharks dealt so fairly with such a weakened "customer", but the rapid development of even more deadly variations not included in the deal agreed with the Vipers provided some explanation, with production of the visually reworked chassis initiated at both Auxiliary Production Site #5 on Babylon and the rebuilt Trellshire Heavy Industries of Twycross.
By 3078 six variations of the Phoenix Hawk IIC were walking off Trellshire's production lines for the garrison forces of Diamond Shark as well as for sale to both Clan and Inner Sphere buyers. While some among the Clans opposed such sales to Spheroids, the focus on designs like the Phoenix Hawk IIC that are considered mediocre by Clan warrior but are still outstanding by Inner Sphere standards appears to be a conscious choice by the Sharks. Many of the variants also utilize ammunition-hungry weapons, a decision Clan observers wryly note ensures Inner Sphere buyers either make steady munitions purchases or are forced to more frequently buy replacement parts from the accelerated wear caused by using inferior Spheroid ordnance, both ensuring frequent repeat business for the Diamond Sharks.

How bout a ZZZ? Ask Belle x cunning hares reader
Reader fights using half of a mech(whichever mech you feel is appropriate) they found in a hollow
I had a blast writing this, though I spent more time on the Mech than the interaction so if it feels a bit off compared to my usual, sorry!
Now! Your Wish Is My Command!
“Combat Rigs like this one were used-” you began to say as you adjusted the rotors of the cooling unit, getting a shock in the process from the left over processed ether, causing you to exclaim “agh! Mother-” before letting out a deep breath and starting over.
“Combat Rigs like this one were used early on to explore Hollow Zero back when it first formed. You’ve run into some of the tech descended from these in the Companion Hollows and its distant cousins in Belobog Construction. Though when these were first made; Ether Corruption wasn’t something very well known, neither was Ether Shielding, at least not on a large scale. Not to mention these things were slapped together in a couple of months with some Shoddy but aggressive A.I. Cores and a lot of the safety features in both of them weren’t exactly up to snuff, especially with the extremely volatile Ether Reactors that, when they got too hot, could melt the entire thing into a ball of molten slag with pilots still inside or A.I.’s programming breaking and hijacking the rig. So, over time as boots on the ground got more and more concerned about the Rig’s going rogue and we learned more and more about hollows, they were phased out. Replaced by heavy, non-piloted machinery with better made and adapted A.I., and small, highly trained groups of people guided by Bangboo.” You explained as you continued to run maintenance on your Rig.
“Then how’d you get your hands on one?” Belle asked, still craning her neck up to look at you.
“Found it in a Companion Hollow not too far into The Hollow Zero Exclusion Zone, from the looks of it, The A.I. Core broke and went on a rampage and flew out of Hollow Zero before the Reactor ran out of fuel and it shut down in mid air, causing it to crash. I had to rip off pretty much all of what remained of the plating and replace a lot of the underlying hardware due to Ether Corruption. The A.I. core was pretty much unscathed, and that’s been a headache and a half to try and work on. It's a stubborn piece of scrap.” you shouted down as you pulled out the damaged Ether Canister and looked it over, seeing if you were going to be able to salvage it.
“This massive thing can fly!?” Belle exclaimed, shocked.
“It could, without the A.I. Core I’m locked out of a ton of the subroutines, including the Flight Check.” you answered as you walked down the catwalk.
“Though considering the Payload this thing could carry, that may be a good thing. Going out in a giant ball of exploding fire sounds as cool to me as the next guy but I’d prefer not to have what was left of my body buried in a matchbox.” you stated as you walked past Belle, still examining the canister.
“What does that mean?” Belle asked, more than a bit concerned for her NOT CRUSH.
“Well, if I got this thing fully loaded with the max it could carry and still be able to go airborne and accounting for the Reactor… that would be around the equivalent of around a megaton of TNT exploding over the sky’s of New Eridu. More than enough to take a sizable chunk out of the city if it was on the ground.” you answered before placing the canister on the table, and pulling out a set of tools.
“That’s… terrifying.” Belle muttered, a chill running down her spine.
“Yup, that’s why I only use the heavy artillery this model was known for if absolutely necessary.” you stated as you continued to work on the canister.
“I know I’ll probably regret asking… but what does that mean?” Belle asked.
“This model was made as a form of highly mobile artillery piece, designed for the express purpose of cracking heavily armored targets with heavy ordnance from any spot on the field. Because of this, it could launch missiles, rockets, and other forms of munitions with little to no modification. It was the swiss army knife of high calibers, explosives, and magnetically accelerated weaponry.” you answered simply, putting your tools down and turning to face Belle.
“Now then Proxy time for me to ask a question, why the sudden interest?” you inquired as you looked Belle dead in the eyes.
“Can’t a girl like giant killer robots on her own time?” Belle clumsily retorted.
“Not you, one half of The Legendary Proxy Phaethon.” you stated clearly.
“Then could you at least ask a girl about her ulterior motives over a bowl of noodles?”
“Are you trying to ask me out?” you asked, eyes narrowing.
“Yes.” Belle declared, tossing all subtlety to the wind.
“Are you buying?” you asked, tempted.
“Half.” Belle answered with a shrug.
“Hmm. Let me get cleaned up and changed, give me a bit.” You said as you walked past Belle and towards the Cunning Hare’s main building where the Showers were.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
You closed the door behind you before walking forward, turning down the hall, and then leaning back on the wall before sliding onto the ground.
You were NOT prepared for this.
Quickly, you fished your phone out of your pocket and dialed the best person you knew for this kind of thing.
Nicole Demara.
The second you saw her name you were already calling her.
“C’mon, c’mon, pick up Nicole.” you muttered as the dial tone rang.
“Hey there! You’ve reached Nicole Demara, Leader of the Cunning Hares! If you have a job for us, say what it is at the beep! If you don’t, BUZZ OFF!!” Nicole’s pre-recorded voicemail shouted at you.
“NICOLE HELP! BELLE ASKED ME ON A DATE! WHAT DO I DO!?” you whisper yelled into your phone in a panic.
Oh god what were you going to do?
You couldn’t just blast your way out of this with rockets and explosives!
Not that you wanted to after all Belle was… Belle.
And you were a Grease Monkey who works with a dangerous robot that can blow a hole in the city.
How in the world were you going to survive this?

Field Ordnance Batteries are some of the largest man-portable weapons that humanity fields. They range from Heavy Lascannons, for direct anti-armor capabilities, to mulit-missile launch systems like the Malleus Rocket Launcher for sweeping enemy infantry from the battlefield. These guns provide mid range support, often deployed behind the front line to operate in positions where they can engage targets as needed.
The Taurox is the fast attack APC of the Astra Militarum, prized for it's all-terrain speed and capable armament. Serving as the lighter cousin to the Chimera, it carries a similar troop compliment, but sacrifices durability for speed and ease of deployment. Kasrkin squads utilize them when enemy flak is too thick to airdrop troops, or when a less obvious approach is needed.
The 99th use both of these weapon platforms in conjunction, as enemy positions are hammered by artillery strikes, the Tauroxes advance under fire to disgorge their furrious payload directly into the enemy lines. Once the foothold is established, the 99th mounts back up and moves to prepare for the next attack, always applying pressure to the enemy.

I'm trying to make a hybrid CQB and melee mech and I have no idea which mech to choose for that
The new Raleigh variant, the Stortebeker, is literally built for this. You can do it one of two ways:
1. Slap two Main melee weapons in the Flex slots and a powerful loading weapon in the Heavy slot. I recommend the Bolt Thrower which comes with the Raleigh 2 license because it doesn't have the Ordnance tag. In terms of Main Melees, two Charged Blades are never a bad idea but if you have spare LLs available you can grab Nelson 1 for the War Pike. For those with many LLs to spare, instead grab Mourning Cloak 3 and run two Variable Swords. Having the first level of the Duelist talent is functionally a requirement for this build.
2. Slap four Hand Cannons in the Flex slots and a powerful melee weapon in the Heavy slot. The Kinetic Hammer from Raleigh 3 is an obvious choice, but if you're feeling truly decadent you can splash all the way to Balor 3 for the Nanobot Whip. If you've only got two LLs to spare, the GMS standard Heavy Melee Weapon is a perfectly respectable choice. If you're at LL3, applying the Auto-Stabilizing Mounts Core Bonus to your Heavy melee weapon is a very good choice.
The Stortebeker has a trait called Dynamic Reload, which says that if you crit with a non-Auxillary melee weapon, you reload all ranged Loading weapons that weren't fired this turn. (Technically it also works the other way round, but because only one Loading melee weapon actually exists in the core book, this is way less relevant)
The Stortebeker also has Truesilver. Once per fight, it lets you turn a regular hit with a non-loading weapon into a crit. This doesn't change the damage it deals, but it does cause all of an attack's on-crit effects to trigger, including Dynamic Reload.
The basic idea here is that you run on a two-turn cycle. On the first turn, you slam in with your loading ranged weapons, dealing tons of damage. The next turn, you slam in with your melee weapons, fishing for crits to reload your ranged weapons with. This is why Duelist 1, the Variable Sword or an accurized Heavy melee are so powerful - having at least point of Accuracy significantly increases your chance of landing a crit. If you really need your ranged weapons back and you didn't get a crit, you can use Truesilver to convert a regular hit into a crit.
If all else fails, the Stortebeker has two additional options: Hopkins Doctrine, which lets you reload all Loading weapons not fired this turn as a quick action, and your Ult, Truesilver Arsenal, which simply lets you use Truesilver three more times this fight.

U.S. Navy Officially Adopts ‘Murder Hornet’ Moniker for F/A-18E/F Equipped with Nine Air-to-Air Missiles
Rin Sakurai
Murder Hornet
Super Hornets, which have been armed with five AIM-120s and four AIM-9Xs since April 2024, were recently referred to as “Murder Hornets” in a year-in-review factsheet published by the U.S. Navy.
In a recently published year-in-review factsheet, titled “Delivering Warfighting Advantage,” the U.S. Navy mentioned under the ‘Aviation’ column that the Super Hornet’s heavy air-to-air loadout with nine air-to-air missiles (AAM) is now referred to as the ‘Murder Hornet’ configuration. The heavy AAM load was first employed in combat in 2024 to counter drone attacks on maritime traffic in the Red Sea.
Super Hornets, which have been armed with five AIM-120s and four AIM-9Xs since April 2024, were recently referred to as “Murder Hornets” in a year-in-review factsheet published by the U.S. Navy. The need for more weaponsThe ‘Murder Hornet’ loadout
Also related to this, the document includes the mention of the first naval air-to-air engagement of a hostile Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Other major accomplishments included in the document are the first combat employment of the AGM-88E AARGM (Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile) and the unveiling of the AIM-174B long-range air-to-air missile.
The Navy already confirmed last summer the first instance of AARGM use in combat, performed during a joint and coalition effort that struck 60 Houthi targets across 16 sites in Yemen. In that occasion, on Feb. 24, 2024, an EA-18G Growler assigned to the Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 “Zappers”, deployed aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier, struck a Houthi Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter on the ground with an AGM-88E.
After photos of a new large missile being tested emerged in early 2024, last summer Super Hornets taking part in Rim of The Pacific 2024 (RIMPAC 2024) were photographed carrying AIM-174B missiles, the air-launched variant of the SM-6 surface-to-air missile. The Navy acknowledged that the AIM-174 is operationally deployed, likely in Initial Operating Capability (IOC).
A ‘Murder Hornet’ F/A-18E assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt landing at an airbase in Jordan, clearly showing its unique heavy air-to-air loadout. (Image credit: U.S. Air Force)
The need for more weapons
As previously reported, we first saw the ‘Murder Hornet’ loadout in pictures from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in April 2024, when F/A-18Es assigned to the Gunslingers of VFA-105 (Strike Fighter Squadron 105) were first photographed with this heavy payload. The ‘Murder Hornet’ features four AIM-9X Sidewinder IR-guided AAMs and five AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile) radar-guided AAMs.
The loadout is significant especially in current and future conflicts, where large swarms of various cheaply manufactured drones are abundant. This means that a larger emphasis is now placed on being able to carry more ordnance, as there are simply more targets that need to be shot down from the air.
This was also highlighted during a recent mission by U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles that found themselves short on missiles while shooting down Iranian drones in defense of Israel back in Apr. 2024. In fact, just a little earlier, the ‘Murder Hornet’ loadout was born in response to urgent operational demands that the jets be equipped with more ammunition to combat the kamikaze drones launched by Houthi militants in Yemen.
Previously, there have also been nicknames for aircraft touting a unique configuration, such as the F-35’s ‘Beast Mode’, which refers to the situations when weapons are carried on underwing hardpoints. This is in contrast to the ‘Stealth Mode’ which focuses on reducing the aircraft’s RCS (Radar Cross Section) and thus improving its low observability.
A ‘Murder Hornet’ F/A-18E is prepared for launch, with markings indicating drone kills highlighted in red. (Image credit: U.S. Navy)
The ‘Murder Hornet’ loadout
The four-Sidewinder loadout is only possible because of a new capability that the Navy introduced back in April 2024, which it cleared the AIM-9X to be carried on the F/A-18E/F’s stations two and ten, its outermost underwing stations. This brought the maximum number of AIM-9Xs carried by Super Hornets up to four (along with the original wingtip mounts), while also introducing the AIM-9X to the Growler.
The ‘Murder Hornet’ loadout features four AIM-9X high off-boresight heat-seeking missiles, of which two on the F/A-18’s wingtip stations and two on station two and ten, five AIM-120 AMRAAMS (with two pairs on two LAU-115s, each with two LAU-127,s and one on the chin station), an AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR (Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared) targeting pod and a 480-gallon fuel tank on the centerline.
Although the ATFLIR can be replaced by another AIM-120, it is usually carried as it gives the Super Hornet’s pilots various targeting and identification advantages. Furthermore, the pod is capable of collecting intelligence on aerial targets, and a basic IRST (InfraRed Search and Track) mode is also available for detection of stealthy targets.
The AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR targeting pod on the chin station of a F/A-18E with VFA-115. (Image credit: Kai Martin)
The weapons configuration also leaves two additional underwing hardpoints empty. This is potentially to reduce drag and allow the aircraft to retain some speed and maneuverability. Furthermore, since the loadout only contains one drop tank, it limits the time that the fighter can stay on station and its range, which is likely due to the fact that the loadout is specifically suited to fleet air defense.
This is not the first example of fighters carrying a large number of air-to-air munitions; in fact, the legacy F/A-18C/Ds are capable of brandishing up to ten AIM-120s and two AIM-9s in one go. Furthermore, in 2024, pictures of a VX-9 (Airborne Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine) armed with four massive AIM-174Bs, three AIM-120s and two AIM-9Xs also circulated online and were unofficially dubbed ‘Murder Hornet’, and Boeing’s Advanced Eagle demonstration team flying the F-15QA Ababil carried out airshow demonstrations with 12 AMRAAMs.
