LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
June 26, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUN 27, 2024
Today President Joe Biden pardoned more than 2000 former military personnel who had been convicted of engaging in consensual sex under a gay sex ban in the military that has since been repealed. People covered under the pardon can apply to have their military discharges corrected and to recover the pay and benefits the convictions cost them. “[M]aintaining the finest fighting force in the world…means making sure that every member of our military feels safe and respected,” Biden said in a statement.
Biden said he was “righting an historic wrong.” “This is about dignity, decency, and ensuring the culture of our Armed Forces reflect the values that make us an exceptional nation,” he said.
On this date in 2015, the Supreme Court handed down the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which said that states must license and recognize same-sex marriage because of the Fourteenth Amendment’s requirement that citizens must have the equal protection of the laws and cannot be deprived of rights without due process of the laws.
In the New York Times today, Kate Zernike explained how the public conversations about abortion have shifted in the two years since the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized the constitutional right to abortion. The state bans that went into place have illustrated that abortion is indeed healthcare, as people suffering miscarriages have been unable to obtain the imperative medical care they need.
Zernike quoted pollster Tresa Undem, who estimated that before the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturned Roe, less than 15% of Americans thought that abortion was relevant to them personally. Now, though, Undem said, “it’s about pregnancy, and everybody knows someone who had a baby or wants to have a baby or might get pregnant. It’s profoundly personal to a majority of the public.”
In the three weeks since Biden announced restrictions on asylum applications for undocumented immigrants, the number of people trying to cross the border has dropped more than 40% to its lowest level since he took office. This information will likely come up in tomorrow’s scheduled debate between the president and presumptive Republican nominee Trump, who has made it clear he intends to accuse the president of promoting immigration policies that bring criminals into the United States.
Former representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a military veteran who joined the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol and who has fiercely criticized Trump, today endorsed Biden for president.
In a video, Kinzinger said: “[W]hile I certainly don’t agree with President Biden on everything, and I never thought I’d be endorsing a Democrat for president, I know that he will always protect the very thing that makes America the best country in the world: our democracy. Donald Trump poses a direct threat to every fundamental American value. He doesn’t care about our country. He doesn’t care about you. He only cares about himself. And he’ll hurt anyone or anything in pursuit of power.”
On CNN tonight, Georgia governor Brian Kemp told Kaitlan Collins he did not vote for Trump in his state’s Republican primary, although he said he would “support the ticket” in November so that Georgia would remain in Republican hands. It was an interesting statement, since he could easily have deflected the question or simply said he voted for Trump if he cared about avoiding Trump’s wrath. But he appeared not to care, suggesting that Trump’s power even with prominent Republicans is slipping.
Two Republican voters from Pennsylvania told MSNBC tonight that they are voting for Biden. When asked whether they think there is “a silent Biden voter out there,” one said, “I do. I know there is…. We don’t want to talk about it, but we’re all going to vote for Joe Biden.”
By a 6–3 vote, the Supreme Court today blessed the practice of taking “gratuities” as a gift for past behavior by an official, distinguishing them from “bribes,” which require proof that there was an illegal deal in place. The case involved a former mayor from Indiana who helped a local truck dealership win $1.1 million in city contracts and then asked for and received $13,000 from the dealership’s owners. The mayor was found guilty of violating a federal anti-corruption law that prohibits state and local officials from taking gifts worth more than $5,000 from someone the official had helped to land lucrative government business.
For the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that the law prohibited officials from accepting “gift cards, lunches, plaques, books, framed photos or the like” in thanks for an official’s help, although David G. Savage of the Los Angeles Times noted that the law came into play only when the gift was worth more than $5,000.
Savage pointed out that as the federal law in question covers about 20 million state and local officials, the decision could have wide impact. This decision that officials can accept “gifts” so long as they are not “bribes” might have something to do with the fact that Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have accepted significant gifts from donors—Thomas’s count is upward of $4 million—and it doesn’t relieve the sense that this Supreme Court, with its three right-wing Trump-appointed justices, is untrustworthy.
Writing for justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and herself, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said, “Officials who use their public positions for private gain threaten the integrity of our most important institutions.”
Yesterday, House Republicans released draft legislation to fund the Justice Department and the Commerce Departments for fiscal year 2025, which starts October 1. They propose to slash nearly a billion dollars from the Department of Justice in retaliation for its bringing cases against Trump, and both to cut funding for the FBI and to block the construction of its new headquarters. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the cuts “unacceptable” and said that the “effort to defund the Justice Department and its essential law enforcement functions will make our fight against violent crime all the more difficult.”
In a secret vote yesterday  by a House panel that fell along party lines, House Republicans also agreed to say that the last Congress’s construction of the January 6th committee was invalid and illegal. This enabled them to back a last-ditch effort by Trump ally Steve Bannon to stay out of jail. After Bannon refused to respond to the committee’s subpoena for documents and testimony about the January 6 attack, a jury found him guilty of being in contempt of Congress.
Today, Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) filed a brief with the Supreme Court saying that Bannon was right to ignore the subpoena because the committee was illegally organized. Politico’s Kyle Cheney pointed out that the lawyer for the brief is not a House lawyer but rather comes from America First Legal, a public interest organization put together by Trump loyalist Stephen Miller to challenge the legal efforts to rein in Trump’s orders when in office.
Finally, Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer reported in The Recombobulation Area today that event bookings expected for the week of the Republican National Convention, which is set to begin on July 15, four days after Judge Juan Merchan sentences Trump for his 34 criminal convictions, have not materialized. Estimates were that the convention would bring $200 million in economic impact to Milwaukee, but that now appears to be optimistic. “[This is] certainly nothing like we were told or promised,” chef Gregory León told Shafer. With locals staying home to avoid the downtown area during the convention, “[i]f the [reservation] book stays the way it is, we’re not going to make enough money to cover costs.”

#Amreading #Newrelease: The Lost Chapters of Humanity on Earth Kindle Edition by Anastasia Martin
This book will explore explanations of Earth and the universe such as The Big Bang, Creationism, The Ancient Astronaut Theory, The Theory of Evolution, and The Theory of Genetic Memory to name a few. This is merely a collection of questions and thoughts intended to elaborate and speculate on current theories and introduce new concepts and contradictory explanations. May this collection offer some new insight and inspiration to all who venture down the rabbit holes within.
It will also introduce new theories of my own, both to expand upon and contradict the existing theories of the many great, observant, and inquisitive minds that came before me. I have a very deep respect for innovative and controversial thinkers like Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Charles Darwin even if I don't always agree with their proposed explanations in their entireties.
However, my deepest respect goes to the Philosophers, Socrates for the Socrates Paradox, and Lao-Tzu the Founder of Taoism. I have always valued the asking of questions over the quest for absolution. To borrow from Socrates, "to find yourself you must think for yourself". I do not claim to have any answers, only possibilities and, of course, more questions. To borrow more words from Socrates, "I know that I don't know".
Here is an all-original quote of my own; if you consider diving down a rabbit hole fun, you may find wandering through a meerkat labyrinth exhilarating. To those who enjoy theory crafting and have an appreciation for mind-exhausting speculation, I hope this proves to be a truly satisfying and provocative read.

IS GOD GOING TO "FIX" THE GAY IN THE RESURRECTION?!
This was written by Heather M. Collins and I thought it so brilliant that I want to share.
—————————————————————
So, one popular theory in the Church re: homosexuality is that those who experience it will have those desires healed/cured/removed during the resurrection. This idea has been repeated on all levels of the Church, at every level of leadership.
I can see why this would be a popular idea for our people to latch onto. It allows us to distance ourselves from violent rhetoric surrounding homosexuality without actually having to change or do anything. The problem will just "work itself out."
But here's the problem: our scriptures don't support this assertion. In fact, they blatantly contradict the idea that anyone experiencing homosexuality can be "fixed" by God in this way, or that God has any intention of doing so.
I'm bringing this up because I've spent the better part of today deconstructing this idea, as part of my Topical Guide revision project. Because LGBTQ members and their families encounter this so much, I would be remiss not to address it.
Let's look at the theological framework surrounding this idea:
1. Homosexuality as an attraction is not a sin. It requires no repentance.
2. Nevertheless, it is a deviation from "the Plan" of God. It must be resolved.
3. Jesus Christ has the power to "fix" homosexuality.
4. Jesus Christ has the desire to "fix" homosexuality.
5. He will express that desire and power through the resurrection--presumably because homosexuality is part of some physical dysfunction within the body that Christ needs to "heal."
Examining each one of these points in isolation, they each fall apart under closer scrutiny. The house of cards we're trying to build for our LGBTQ friends and family members to occupy cannot stand.
The first point really should be more salient to people. If there is no sin in being attracted to the opposite sex, how can it possibly follow that acting on that desire is wrong? Especially in light of what Christ said in Matt. 5:27-28. According to Christ himself, a sin does not take place upon a person actually doing it. It happens the moment we even desire to do it. If we've reached a place where we don't believe homosexual attraction is a sin, it should logical follow that acting on it isn't either.
Second point: if homosexuality needs to be resolved by Christ as part of his plan, there should be evidence somewhere in the scriptures that he believes this. ESPECIALLY FOR US. We have an open scriptural canon. If ANYONE should have evidence of this, it should be us.
The closest thing we have, in terms of modern revelation that condemns homosexuality, is the Family Proclamation. And given that we haven't voted on that as a church, even it technically isn't part of the scriptural canon. There haven't been any new additions to the scriptural canon (as we understand it) directly addressing homosexuality since the New Testament. Not in the Book of Mormon. Not in the D&C. Not the Pearl of Great Price. I'll get more into what I think this means later.
These last three points all converge together, so let's just dive in. If LGBTQ people don't get to go to heaven, we should see evidence of this being a dealbreaker for God. Firm lines in the sand, no sign of budging. An enumerated list somewhere of everyone who isn't allowed in. Under no circumstances should we see God being as open armed to as many people as possible, complete with mission statements committing himself to being way more inclusive than we're prepared to be.
"He layeth down his own life that he may draw ALL men unto him." 2 Ne. 26:24
"Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying: Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; but he saith: Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy milk and honey, without money and without price." 2 Ne. 26:25
"Hath he commanded any that they should depart out of the synagogues, or out of the houses of worship? Behold, I say unto you, Nay." 2 Ne. 26:26
"All men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden." 2 Ne. 26:28
Either God doesn't seem to care as much about kicking people out, pushing people away, and "hating the sin, not the sinner" as we do... Or someone forget to tell him this isn't what it looks like when God cares more about law than he does about people. I mean... do we really think God has THIS MUCH TROUBLE STAYING ON MESSAGE?
Or. Or Or Or. OR. Was God serious as a mf heart attack when he told Peter/the entire Christian world "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common," and we're all just REALLY BAD at following directions and accepting change. (See Acts 10:15)
But let's get to the main point of this thread. IS GOD GOING TO "FIX" THE GAY IN THE RESURRECTION?! COULD HE DO SO EVEN IF HE WANTED TO?!
The answer, as it turns out, is No. Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. And even he doesn't get to use the Resurrection to fundamentally change someone's identity or divine outcome. And let's dig into this idea here. Because there are two ways of looking at it: "Gay" as a physical mortal flaw attached to the body, and "Gay" as an intrinsic part of someone's identity. You might say, someone with a "gay" soul.
Now, anyone who has ever bothered to listen to someone who experiences homosexuality would know that "gay body, straight soul" is not a thing. But maybe you believe that is a thing. You're wrong, but let's address it anyway. We're going to be informed by the same scriptures where we talk about "gay" as an eternal identity. Mostly because they're so clear about how this process is going to play out.
"That same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world." Alma 34:34
Now, in context, this verse is talking about sin. Can Christ actively prevent us from the consequences of our actions via the resurrection, as it relates to sin? Answer: No. But the language here, I think, reaches beyond just sin. It speaks to the sum total of who we are.
Go with me also to Alma 40:23 and Alma 41:2-4. Is it possible to read these verses and believe God gets to tamper with the fundamental parts of our identity, the sum total of who we are and what we decided to make of ourselves--whether as a consequence of biology OR identity? NO! IT LITERALLY DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY. Whether it's a biological force or an eternal part of someone's identity. It doesn't matter. Jesus cannot "cancel out" who we are, in favor of making into who he wants us to be instead.
Read those verses in Alma 41. If God was in the business of "overhauling" people's personalities as part of the resurrection, why are we using the word "restore" here? Jesus' job, in the resurrection and the judgment, is going to be to perfect whatever version of myself I hand over to him. He is going to work with whatever raw materials I gave him. Which only seems fair, because that's what I've been doing with what he gave to me.
We don't get to completely redefine everything we know about Resurrection in order to erase "gayness" from heaven. We certainly don't get to do that to perpetuate unacceptable attitudes and behaviors towards our LGBTQ friends, neighbors, and family members today. And if we insist on continuing in that line of thinking, we need to remember one thing: Jesus isn't going to magically fix that about us before we go into our final interview. He will restore that crusty attitude right back to us, where it belongs.
We each need to think about the person we want to be when we meet Jesus again. What do I want him to restore to me from my life here on earth? Now is the time I have to decide who I want to be. And being awful to LGBTQ folks... that ain't it, y'all. The last thing I want him to ask me in that day is "Why were you so comfortable with the suffering of others?" Because I'll tell you what. I can't think of a single good answer to that question.
