Cephalexin Alcohol Interactions
Can Cephalexin interactions with other medication and drugs affect the effectiveness of our drug addiction treatment? Most people are aware that the answer is a resounding "yes." The effectiveness of our treatment is based on the strength of the medications used in our programs. And, most important, the types of medications we prescribe to our patients are determined by our understanding of alcohol abuse and alcoholism and our assessment of their potential for side effects.
In the case of cephalexin alcohol, we have seen an increased incidence in some patients taking other medications. This is likely due to a number of factors. The first of these factors may be that the majority of our cephalexin patients receive their medications orally. Oral alcohol therapies (e.g., intravenous, intramuscular) tend to be associated with numerous side effects including dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, heart arrhythmia, dry mouth, muscle spasms, diarrhea, hallucinations, agitation, flu-like symptoms and increased blood pressure. It is important to note that these side effects can also occur when an individual is orally ingesting other drugs that interact with or inhibit the action of cephalexin.
To address the possibility of increased risk for side effects when treating patients with cephalexin, several changes have been made within the labeling and instructions for use. First, we have seen a marked simplification of the instructions for use. Now, it is recommended that cephalexin be taken one hour before meals (preferably four hours prior to eating). Second, all cephalexin doses are accompanied by recommendations for appropriate dietary intake. Again, in many instances, it has been seen that patients who respond well to cephalexin do not accurately respond to other medications. These changes in the formulation and administration of cephalexin have contributed to a dramatic increase in the number of satisfied patients and, to a lesser extent, to an increase in the number of complaints from patients.
Other common, but less well known, side effects of cephalexin include restlessness, difficulty concentrating, nervousness, agitation, nausea, dizziness, increased sweating and frequent urination. While it is important to note that most patients respond favorably to cephalexin, there are those who, in rare cases, experience serious side effects. In addition, patients should be aware that the above mentioned side effects are not experienced if the primary cause of the problem is gastroscopy or colonoscopy. However, in this case, it is always best to follow the advice of the medical provider.
There have been reports of significant alcohol interactions between cephalexin and other drugs and stimulants. For example, some patients taking adrafinil, a prescription form of cholesterol reducing medication, and who combine it with cephalexin, have experienced serious blood vessel abnormalities. Also, it should be noted that patients who are on other prescribed medications should carefully monitor their blood levels after they stop using the drug with cephalexin. This is because the blood level of other drugs could drop below the normal range and then result in serious adverse drug reactions.
There are also rare, adverse interactions between cephalexin and asthma medications, anti-cancer medications and anti-seizure medications. It should also be noted that the above mentioned side effects are more often reported by patients who are taking other, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen are not considered "dietary" medicines, many patients mistakenly believe that taking these types of medications will somehow prevent or reduce the affects of cephalexin and its possible side effects. Cephalexin and NSAIDs have been contraindicated in patients with pre-existing heart disease and kidney disease, so these drugs must be taken with extreme caution.

When I was diagnosed with this recently, my thoughts immediately turned on me ‘you’re not really anorexic’ ‘you’re greedy and fat’ ‘you’re not underweight’ which are things a lot of us with this diagnosis will think due to both ED thoughts as well as stigma.
The diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is split into restricting subtype and bp subtype - like any mental illness the causes behaviours and symptoms will vary between people but anorexia bp means someone is underweight, has a fear of gaining weight and views themselves as ‘fat’, has disordered thoughts around food and also binges and purges at times. For some people this may mean that for some time they restrict their intake until their body can’t take anymore, leading to extreme hunger and eating large amounts of food, the person panics and purged which can easily lead to a cycle of bingeing and purging. For others they may have binged and purged at a healthy weight and become underweight through behaviours, someone else may restrict their intake with occasional episodes of bingeing and purging or it may feel like an out of control cycle which happens multiple times a day.
As eating disorders often change throughout someone’s illness, AN-BP may be diagnosed after bulimia or restrictive anorexia or it may simply be diagnosed as anorexia without specifying subtype. Around half of people with anorexia have this subtype despite the stereotype of ‘anorexics don’t eat/hardly eat’ and most eating disorder sufferers will alternate between diagnoses in their life time.
For people who have restricted their intake and controlled their weight for a long time, the brain releases higher levels of chemicals which lead to extreme hunger and the body being desperate to eat high carb and high calorie foods which can be terrifying although a natural part of recovery from anorexia. It seems that those who do not go on to develop AN-BP in recovery are better able to rationalise and cope with their bodies calorie requirements rather than turning to purging.
Physically, this illness is extremely dangerous, as or more so than restrictive anorexia. An underweight body will often have broken down muscles, low blood levels and physical complications. When an anorexic binges after a period of restriction, their body risks refeeding syndrome, stomach tears, due to large volumes of food in a shrunken stomach, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, dehydration and more physical issues. When purging is added on to this, the heart can become extremely weak, with low electrolytes risking heart problems and purging leading to water retention and damaging the digestive system.
Depending on someone’s history, AN-BP is often treated in a similar way to AN-R, with the goal to reduce restriction, increase calorie intake, restore weight with the addition of reducing episodes of purging through nutritional rehabilitation. It may however be treated similarly to bulimia, with a focus on the emotions behind the binges if they are not thought to be caused by malnutrition.
In this community, different eating disorders are massively underrepresented; how many accounts in recovery from restrictive anorexia can you name? How many from AN-BP? Bulimia? Binge eating disorder? Osfed?
If you struggle with anorexia BP, you are not greedy or alone or less unwell than someone who doesn’t binge and purge. If you have never experienced this illness, please remember that those who have it may be very ashamed to talk about it, viewing their behaviours as being more embarrassing than restricting. Essentially, every eating disorder is an illness which brings huge mental and physical challenges, is caused by a multitude of biological and psychological factors and which can be overcome. 🌿
