going to the concert and decided to put my earplugs in on the metro and god damn I have got to get some noise cancelling earphones. This is so much better. The metro isn't intolerably loud but it is very loud.

Gratitude Journal Day 3: Today I am thankful in advance for sensory tools! I live in the US and that means that for at least a few weeks around Independence Day, sudden explosions can happen at any time because people are dicks about fireworks. I'm autistic so my hearing is extremely sensitive, and it's hell on my PTSD. I've injured myself multiple times this week due to startle responses making me jump and slam into furniture. One firework was so loud and close that I had temporary hearing loss for a couple days.
But I *JUST* remembered that I have a pair of those fancy electronic hearing protection headphones from when I used to go to the shooting range! They're the kind that take batteries and make it so you can still hear people talking and things that are a reasonable volume, but they block out everything over a certain decibel level. They're not comfy, but I think they'll help a lot when things get especially loud tonight. Idk why I've never thought to try them for fireworks season before, but I'm grateful I have them on hand!
Our poor anxious kitty gets quite upset from the noise as well, and I'm glad my partner and I considered the potential stress effects on her heart condition and decided to try medicating her this year. I think breaking out some of her pre-vet visit gabapentin will go a long way in helping her be more comfortable and as a bonus, it makes her extra cuddly. We're planning to snuggle in bed together with some fidgets, snacks, and a good show, and just try to keep everybody as calm and comfortable as possible. I'll update this post if my idea about the electronic headphones works well, so that others can give them a try! Wish me luck, Tumblr.

as a musician jesus christ protect your hearing. listen to music through headphones at safe levels. headphones over earbuds if you can. earbuds are so small they can't make bass sounds properly and emulate bass by being very very close and bouncing the sound around in your closed-off ear canal. you are basically blasting the frequencies right into your ears and letting them rattle about. if you go to/perform at concerts get earplugs and if you do this regularly get custom earplugs that are moulded to fit your ears. your hearing is so so important. I am BEGGING.
#the apprentice casts out another thought#hearing protection#like i think about this a lot because if i lose my hearing im fucked.#one of my lecturers at college had to cancel classes because he developed severe tinnitus#and he's a sound mixer. he needs the most objective idea of what things sound like.#so if you're in sound or music you better be protecting yourself.#but if you're a normal person do it because you do NOT realise how bad hearing loss and tinnitus is.#even if you already have it. it CAN and WILL get worse.#thank you for coming to my tedtalk

The Importance of Musician Earplugs
Musicians are exposed to loud sounds regularly, whether during practice sessions or performances. This can lead to hearing damage or loss, making it important to wear musician earplugs. These earplugs are designed to protect the ears from loud and harmful sounds while still allowing musicians to hear the music clearly.
Regular earplugs can muffle the sound and distort it, making it difficult for musicians to play their instruments. Musician earplugs are designed to attenuate the sound evenly, preserving the sound quality while reducing the volume. This allows musicians to hear the nuances of their music without compromising their hearing.
Hearing damage can occur gradually and can be irreversible. Musicians who do not use earplugs or use inadequate earplugs are at risk of developing hearing problems such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, or hearing loss. This can significantly impact their careers and overall quality of life.
Using musician earplugs is a simple and effective solution to protect the hearing of musicians. There are many different types of musician earplugs available, each with their own unique features and benefits. It is important to choose the right type of earplugs for your needs and to ensure that they fit properly to provide optimal protection.
In summary, musician earplugs are an essential tool for any musician looking to protect their hearing while still being able to hear and play music effectively. They provide a simple and effective solution to protect the hearing of musicians and prevent irreversible damage that can impact their careers and quality of life.

Ear Pro Battle: Cheap vs Pricey
Protecting your hearing is extremely important. You’ve only got one set of ears and if you’re into shooting on a regular basis it’s a good idea to try and provide the best protection you can for your hearing. Once you start down the path of hearing damage, it’s almost always un-reversable. As for the many, many hearing protection options there are, some are on the cheaper side and provide good protection whereas some are much more expensive. Does the price spent indicate the amount of protection provided? Not always the case.
So I used to always use regular old over the ear hearing muffs or foam/gel ear protection…the throw away kind. Some years back I started to use electronic hearing protection so that I could hold a conversation and be able to better hear the commands given by the range safety officer. Brownells sells a set of re-branded Walker Razors and I’ve probably purchased a half dozen or so of these over the past few years. They’re reasonably priced and as such I keep an extra set inside each one of my range bags. These offer a 23DB noise reduction which is pretty decent by today’s standards. They use AAA batteries and I’ve been able to use these for an entire day without changing them out, but I do carry a spare set just in case. While they do offer a considerable value in today’s electronic ear pro arena, they aren’t without some drawbacks. The foam ear pads for example can get uncomfortable when wearing them all day long. I’ve found that you can purchase a replacement set that are made out of a more comfortable gel type material. I only wish they came this way from the factory. In addition, I always wear a set of foam ear plugs when shooting under cover or at load events with a ton of shooting.
On the pricey side of things there is Axil. They’ve been around for a number of years now and my wife picked me up a set of their electronic ear plugs. They come with a variety of plugs that provide different levels of protection. What I’ve found though with my ears is that many times they will break seal and allow sounds past them. Although I’ve tried different plug sizes, this always seems to happen especially with moving around. The other issue that I’ve experienced is the amplifying of sounds that aren’t hearing safe such as nearby gunfire. I was attending a carbine class and this happened to me. Due to the issues I’ve experienced and the price being roughly 4-5x that of the Brownells hearing protection, I will opt for the Brownells ear pro each and every time if given the choice.
So at the end of the day, hearing and hearing protection are an important aspect of shooting that we must pay close attention too. These are just 2 examples of hearing protection that I’ve used in recent years and have lots of experience with. Make sure whatever you choose, ensure that it works for you and provides the protection you need.

Hello! Audiology student here!! Not only are you not immune to hearing loss, but it isn’t as slow developing as you think! The amount of people I’ve seen come in because of one (1) incident of noise exposure is much higher than you’d expect!! Hearing aids are expensive, the psychosocial affects of hearing loss are not fun, to say the least, and on top of all of this, if you lose your hearing it doesn’t even matter how loud you play your music, you’ll never hear it the same since different frequencies are effected in different ears! As good as technology has gotten, it’s still not perfect so. Basically. PROTECT YOUR FUCKING EARS I SWEAR TO GOD DO YOU KNOW HOW EMBARRASSING IT IS WHEN I LOOK AT MY CLASSMATES AND TELL THEM I ALREADY HAVE A BIT OF HIGH FREQUENCY HEARING LOSS BC I LIKED IT WHEN I PHYSICALLY FELT THE SOUND??? I GET IT BUT HOLY SHIT JUDGEMENT DAY IS UPON UP AND ITS IN THE EYES OF AUDIOLOGISTS
sometimes you just gotta listen to music at a volume that you know will be part of the cause of your hearing loss at the age of 28

In his review for "The Armory Life," Justin Opinion evaluates WarBird Protection's eye and ear safety gear, particularly the Intrepid RC ear protection and the Sleeper Cell eye protection. He highlights the historical transition of range safety products from basic and inadequate designs to modern, advanced solutions that WarBird offers. The Intrepid RC headset features low-profile design, electronic noise attenuation, and an eight-hour rechargeable battery, ensuring both comfort and high performance. The Sleeper Cell eye protection meets ANSI Z87.1 standards, providing substantial impact resistance and high-contrast lenses suitable for both range use and everyday activities. Or! Instead of shelling out $30+ for a pair of loop earplugs, you could go over to etymotic and get a 2 pack of their high fidelity passive earplugs for around $20! Each pair come in an extremely practical and low profile carrying case (I keep mine on my keychain and the spares with my jewelry at home). They can be washed with regular soap and water. They're basically invisible when they're in. They're friendly to pierced ears. They sound great, like they're turning the volume on the world down without dulling or muffling it. I've been using them for ~15 years to quiet situations ranging from annoying fan in the office to big power tools in the machine shop to snoring bedmate and they win every single time.
this is an accessibility aid post for neurodivergent people, because I feel bad keeping this information to myself.

^ these are loop earplugs and they help you manage sound, these work great for migraines and people with sound sensitivity bc of autism/trauma/anxiety, etc. they come with multiple sized ear tips and the sound muffler silicone ring. I bought the loop engage plus, I'm a very burnt out + overwhelmed person. these make my annoying clock go away without me having to take out the batteries.
https://www.flareaudio.com/en-us/collections/calmer
^ flare earplugs, but I consider them more ear funnels? they allow more airflow into your ears for clearer sound. these work great for tinnitus, anxiety and autistic people. I haven't tried these yet and they have a lot less reviews on tiktok compared to loop.
if you need to search out cheaper brands I've only seen alternatives similar to loop on Amazon, look into decibels and your daily life needs, especially if you work. I feel my engage pro is great for daily home life with older children, pets, natural noises in your day, school, or work. but in a louder work setting like a factory, construction, daycare, or a theme park, I'm afraid these wouldn't work as good as experience might. I recommend checking out tiktok + reddit reviews if you're unsure.
