I know we all like to think about Haymitch being like a grandpa to the toast babies, but I raise you: Hazelle being like a grandma to them! Because tbh she's the more responsible one and experienced with kids between her and Haymitch, and she loves Katniss like a daughter.
But also imagine this from Gale's perspective. First white boy steals your girl, then he steals your MOM!!!!!!!

as someone from appalachia, i think about katniss’s father and his death a lot. i grew up in a coal town and i saw firsthand what a difficult and dangerous job that could be. but also how important it was to my people and culture.
i remember hearing the news stories of miners trapped in the mines. i remember when my best friends father got an awful injury after a rock fell on him. i remember that fear that comes with mine accidents, even if you don’t know the people inside personally.
i just think about katniss’s father a lot and how that accident must have shook the whole district. i think about the aftermath and the anxiety of the other miners and their families when they had to go back.
i think about what it must have been like for hazelle hawthorn when her oldest son had to go into the mines after having after lost her husband to them.
and i think about how the mines got shut down after the war. and how that is both good and bad. but that’s another post.

i think of gale and i think of all the things he was before the war. a protector, a hunter, a fighter. someone's brother, son. he was already gunning to be revolutionary before it all came crashing down, and his saving of 12's civilians first proved it.
was he a mama's boy? was he his mother's pillar? while she climbed to great heights to protect her family, he would be there — making sure she didn't burn out, and making sure that food was always on the table, even if it came with the fear of whipping.
did she know? did she know that her son would become a furnace of crackling hate that rose out of the fire of his home? did she know, that in his rebellion, he would turn to justice in protecting his home, until he too, would unknowingly cause the burning of someone's home, and the death of other children?
did she pray for something different? does she still pray, seeing him plastered on tv screens and ringing up his number to be met with a dial tone, or his exhaustion, and ultimately know, that her son had slipped away from her? that the truths of him had died in that fire and raised a killing phoenix?

Something of Our Own - Chapter 27: Second Fiddle
Hazelle wants to rebuild, Haymitch tries not to tear everything down, and there are embers in ashes. or, Haymitch and Hazelle find themselves after the war.
With November comes the first morning frost, the first election, and the first Harvest Festival as a free people. The morning of the Festival, Peeta talks him into a haircut. He's been talking Haymitch into a lot of things lately, it seems. Haymitch really ought to say no to something once in a while.

SECOND QUARTER QUELL II UPRISING AU
Ok, look. I’m obsessed with Second Quarter Quell generation and I have A LOT of head canons about them. And sometimes these head canons contradict each other, lol. Previously I showed you some of my illustrations about SQQ generation but it was always one particular AU (where they all are kinda friends/classmates?). And I think it’s time to show you another one that I also like. This is AU (or “head canon” since we don’t really know what is real and what is not) where all of them were part of revolutionary movement before the 50th Hunger Games. Some things are the same in both universes (Mr. Hawthorne and Mrs.Mellark are best friends in both, haha), some are completely different (Mr.Mellark and Mrs.Mellark were not in love in “uprising au” and had to marry for the sake of revolution after Mr.M/Mr.E partnership was broken, oh oh, that was super dramatic!). But they look pretty much the same in every AU I have in my head haha. So here are quick portraits of SQQ gen characters and their confident files from D13 before the 50th Hunger Games reaping day (everything went wrong after that, huh).
About Donner sisters. Peeta said that Mr.Mellark described them as “twins or something” and I interpreted this “something” as that they were not identical twins. Katniss was amazed by young Mrs.Undersee and Madge’s similarity but she didn’t have this feeling about Maysilee. So I think they looked like sisters but not super similar to each other. I mean, I’m a mother of identical twins, I know what I’m talking about lol.
These portraits are not perfect and were done quickly but I really tried 😅. Funny fact: overall I have more clear vision of SQQ characters than THG characters, haha (especially young Haymitch, Mr.Everdeen, Hazelle and Mrs.Mellark). Oh, and you have no idea how much time I’ve spent on these files lol. I don’t even know WHY I did it, because obviously no one cares, but this idea lived in my head for far too long. Ugh, I’m finally free of it. And now I need to return to my work and also main series uffffffff.
P.S. “agent Fox” is Haymitch’s girl, but I have no decent head canon for her
P.P.S. I don’t mention any names because I try not to be too attached to particular names for these characters (who knows maybe one day Suzanne will reveal some information and I don’t want to be upset lol)

Okay so let me be cringe and free but I’ve had a little ‘project’ idea for quite some time about making wiki-adjacent things and one totally specific thing on my mind has been ships.
Not just like shipping in a meta-fandom way (which that interests me too, but that’s another convo for a different day), but in an “individual ship appeal” way.
Like, using a Hunger Games specific example: Everlark. Everlark (Katniss x Peeta) has been analyzed literally ever since the books came out, but still.
Anyways, all this to say, there will be a ‘shipping’ themed post sometime hopefully soon(??)
(I will be EXCLUDING any pro-shipping things. I do no want to discuss that, so please do not mention any minors/adults or anything the like)
(Some of these are super niche and I don’t expect a lot of various answers, but I wanted to list out nearly every possible ship with Haymitch) ↴

if you are taking prompts for setting... 012, 041, 044 for your choice of everlark, hayzelle, and odesta >:) (pick and choose, up to you!)
Thank you @districtunrest for derailing my WIP this week 💕
From Setting Prompts - 041.   the street of an unfamiliar city at night - taking some liberties here - streets -> halls and unfamiliar city -> District 13
Hazelle tiptoes down the dimly lit halls of District 13, a bundle in her arms, counting down the compartment numbers as she goes.
District 13 is heavily regulated, down to the number of linens they’re issued each week. She didn’t have much back home in the Seam, but at least her underwear were her own. She supposes it’s a small price to pay for refuge and three regular meals a day, but at the moment it’s terribly inconvenient to be scurrying about the underground complex in search of fresh sheets in the middle of the night.
It’s ironic really, she’s worked in the laundry room everyday for the last two weeks, but she has no idea how to get there directly. Work assignments are punctuated by meals, so she’s only ever come and gone to the laundry by way of the cafeteria. It will be a thirty minute trek to get there the only way she knows.
Turning the corner, her footsteps stutter, as she spots a figure at the end of the new corridor.
Haymitch.
She’s heard he was here, but she hasn’t seen him in the month since they arrived. He must have been released from wherever they had him hidden while he dried out.
He recognizes her immediately despite the distance and dim lighting. “What are you doing up past lights out?” a hint of concern in his voice as he moves towards her.
He’s yellow and gaunt, but the keen gray eyes are the same, taking her in. Hazelle licks her lips, wondering what she must look like, sleep worn and breathless under these ghastly fluorescent bulbs. She pushes the thought away; what should she care?
“Posy had an accident,” She repositions the bundle of sheets in her arms as evidence. It was the second time this week. She hadn’t bothered with new sheets the first, just stripped the bed and had Posy sleep with her, but now they were down to two beds and Rory was too big to share. She’d deposited Posy next to Vick with reassurances that she’d be-right-back. “Hasn’t happened in years,” she adds to fill the silence.
“Watching your home burn will do that.”
She winces.
“Sorry,” he says.
She shrugs. It was his home too; everyone deals differently.
“I’ve got a spare set, I’ll trade you.”
“Victor privileges?” She says, hoping to lighten the mood.
“Something like that. I’ve got a reputation, you know.”
Her lips upturn just a little. She’s pretty sure he doesn’t mind his reputation. In fact, she thinks he uses it to keep people at arms length and stay beneath notice; He was crafty like that. But she’d observed enough of him while keeping his house to know better. To know there’s a quick and surprisingly compassionate mind behind the harsh, slovenly exterior.
Fearing her refusal, he adds in low tones, “There’ll be less questions about a dirty set of sheets from me.”
She pinches her eyes closed. She knew there would be paperwork; Always paperwork here. She’d have to complete an exception request and disclose the reason, but she hadn’t considered the implications.
‘Children are important to District 13.’
The idea echos in her head. What she viewed as a minor accident, would be flagged as a potential problem. There’d be questions about Posy’s health, her development, maybe even tests.
She opens her eyes and nods.
Haymitch reaches out, his hand grazing her arm as the burden is transferred, then disappears down the hall.
With nothing to do with her hands, she hugs herself, hoping to quell the silly flutter in her stomach at his touch.
She wonders if he remembers; The brief press of lips all those months before.
He hadn’t been expecting her when she’d shown up on his doorstep the morning of the reaping, nor had he expected it when she’d wished him luck and kissed him.
She still wasn’t sure why she’d done it.
Maybe it had been for luck, though she’s not sure what ‘luck’ would have looked like given the circumstances. Or maybe it was gratitude; Not just for the job, but for the selfish part of her that was relieved none of her children’s names would be in that bowl. But there’s a little voice in the back of her mind that suggests that perhaps it was desire; she might as well admit there’s some of that too.
She wasn’t sure except that she’d woken that morning with the wild impulse to kiss him, if only just once.
Haymitch’s return brings her back to the present. He hands off the linens and she thanks him. They linger, neither turning to leave. He opens his mouth, but she speaks first, “I better get back.”
He exhales and nods; she can’t tell if it’s disappointed or relief in his eyes. “Goodnight Hazelle,” he says before turning away.

What do you think about Mother's role in characters' life of The Hunger Games series?
Do you think there is correlation of their situation with their action?
Thank you :)
@curiousthg
What a great ask. I’m a firm believer in this too. What a mother/maternal figure does greatly affects the child, and the lack thereof. In the series, three mothers come to my mind: Mrs. Everdeen, Mrs. Mellark, and Hazelle Hawthorne. Thankfully, their children are big characters in the series so I can correlate actions and emotions to their mothers.
Starting with the obvious, Mrs. Everdeen and Katniss:
We do not know much about Mrs. Everdeen from before Mr. Everdeen died, but we can infer that she was a decent mother then. Happy even. Leaving her merchant life for love rather than status. When, Mr. Everdeen dies tragically, she is almost lifeless. Severely depressed and mentally withdrawn from the world around her. It’s this that drives Katniss to be the provider of family. Without the knowledge and skill of survival she would have never of made it as far as she did. Mrs. Everdeen is emotionally driven and so is Katniss. Volunteering for Prim. Singing for Rue. The nightlock berries. While Katniss has built a brick wall to hide her feelings from everyone, so has her mother. They just go about it differently. Then in Mockingjay, Katniss mirrors her mother regarding Peeta’s capture. I think a lot of people see Mrs Everdeen and Katniss as opposites, but really they’re just two sides of the same coin.
Mrs. Mellark and Peeta: While we really don’t have a lot of information on Mrs. Mellark, we know enough to infer that she was abusive. Unfortunately, we don’t know the reasons why she is the way and many chalk it to an unhappy marriage/life—and I agree. But, I want to focus on how much of opposites Peeta and his mother are. Peeta is this optimistic, self-sacrificing, charismatic, character. I think he learns this from his mother too, but in a backwards way. He learns what not to be. He does not want to be brutal. Does he have his outbursts of anger? Yes. Because he’s human. So he learns what not to be from others, while also seeing the good things in everyone.
Hazelle and Gale Hawthorne: This my least thought out, just because I never looked too much into it. Hazelle is a strong woman. A widow raising four children in poverty. She had to be strong. I feel like Gale saw this strength and made by it to help out his family. It’s altruism. Gale is a sacrificing character. Putting himself in harms way to save others. I trait he undeniably had learned somewhere, I just want to believe it’s Hazelle.
Thank you so much for the ask!

Katniss' Nervousness about the Victory Tour
"My chest tightens as I think about how, on the Victory Tour, Peeta and I will have to present ourselves as lovers again. I gulp my tea even though it's too hot and push back from the table." —Catching Fire, chapter 1
As I was reading the series for the third time, I got fixated on this excerpt of Katniss' feelings when she was speaking with Hazelle. It was clear that she was nervous and I don't think she was only nervous about hurting Gale with her and Peeta's fake romance. I think she was also nervous about facing Peeta and having to interact with him beyond a polite greeting. She dreaded the return of her confusing feelings, dreaded facing him after their massive disagreement, and she hated herself for missing him. She didn't like holding both Gale's and Peeta's affections, she would rather not worry about romance at all (her conscious mind is overwhelmingly loud). She felt trapped and in that moment, felt a wave of anxiety course through her. Maybe she was worried about having to face the possibility of knowing–as opposed to being wilfully ignorant–Peeta moved on? I don't know, it's probably my anxiety speaking.
Other opinions, interpretations, and/or comments would be greatly appreciated!

⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
I have set up in SOO that Haymitch's family moved in with his mom's brother Sear after his dad died. his uncle lived next door to Hazelle's family, where she was an only child with an overbearing mom and a disabled father.
I'm sure I'll reference this at some point but my headcanon has been that Hazelle first remembers Haymitch, age 9, throwing a rock through his uncle's window right off, like the first or second day there. and then within the hour he was coming over asking if she wanted to catch toads. whether his tone implied he didn't think she had anything better to do, and whether he was right, remains to be seen. whether it looked like he had been crying, or yelled at, or hit, is up to Hazelle to say. he absolutely shoved a toad in her face to get a reaction, though.
send me a writer truth or dare!

I heart Posy and am sad she was cut from the movies (Hazelle too)
But it's Posy, Gale's five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. “You're green. Are you sick?”
“It's a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lipstick,” I say.
“It's meant to be pretty,” whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes. Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, “I think you'd be pretty in any color.” The tiniest of smiles forms on Octavia's lips. “Thank you.”
“If you really want to impress Posy, you'll have to dye yourself bright pink,” says Gale, thumping his tray down beside me. “That's her favorite color.” Posy giggles and slides back down to her mother.
-- "Mockingjay", Suzanne Collins
I shall never forgive the Capitol for using Posy's voice against Katniss in one of the jabberjays in the arena. I don't know why it's worse than using Prim to me. I guess because Posy is a baby. It's just pretend torture but... why would you think torturing a five-year-old is totally normal?
