SOTR SPOILERS
anyway. Back to my obsession.
-Thinking about Tam Amber and Carmine Clerk "not again". All the covey singers are dead (THEIR SONGBIRDS). Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray, Lenore Dove. All of them are dead, and the coveys don't sing anymore. That is why Katniss knows only two of their song. The only survivors are musicians (and probably just the men. I feel like this has to mean something, but maybe I'm just crazy.)
-Thinking about Clerk Carmine, that we know is the fiddler in the Odair's wedding, playing alone. (thinking also about Haymitch seeing him play. Did he talk to him? Did they ever talk about Lenore Dove? Did Carmine Clerk forgive him? Maybe he never blamed him at all.)
-I wonder if at the end of the war Carmine Clerk was able to talk with others coveys, maybe from other districts (because they were travelers, maybe they were separated before the war)
-Barb Azure. We don't know anything about her. She vanished from the narrative. Is she Burdock's mother? That would explain his connection to Lenore Dove and why Burdock knows the covey's song (ofc he could also have learned it from Lenore Dove, even tho I would argue it's weird that Katniss seems to have Maude Ivory's exact skill for remembering music). But what happened to her? She is not dead, because if she was, she would have been probably buried next to the other girls. (MY SHAYLAS) [Also I feel like it's significant that the singers are the first to die.] If she is Burdock's mother I wonder what happened to the girl she was seeing. Was she forced to marry, to keep her secret? Or maybe she was bi and she fell in love with a man? But then why doesn't Burdock have a covey name? (even tho it's not lost on me the fact that Everdeen is really similar to Evergreen) Maybe because she thought it was starting to be dangerous? I also read a theory that Burdock is the niece of her girlfriend. That would make her his aunt, and would explain why he hasn't a covey name. I need more lore, I'm going insane.
-Snow is definitely the culprit of their music getting banned. He really wanted to destroy them, all because of Lucy Gray. She really did a number on him, he is still obsessed after all this time. Pathetic little man.
-Also can we talk about the fact that in 40 years he was able to make Panem homophobic again?
-Beete wife and second son?? They are dead right? I don't remember them, I will reread the series soon, but I feel like I would remember if they were alive. So Snow kept his wife and his second son alive, to keep him doing what he wanted, just to kill them after some time?
-Wyatt makes my heart bleed. I love him so much, every time he talks I feel like I'm gonna cry. Imagine knowing your father will accept bets on you. Also during the reaping some of his family said something along the lines of "you brought him bad luck" (I read it in Italian so I don't know the exact sentence) Does that mean someone already bet he was going to be reaped? That honestly kills me.
-I also kinda like WyattxMaysilee. I feel like I'm alone in this. But also I think she could also be a lipstick lesbian. I'm conflicted. This is not really important, just some thoughts.
-Thinking about all the tries it must have taken the rebels to finally win. How many mockinjays died in their arenas, because it was just not the right time? They tried, but they couldn't. And no one knows what happened. I hope that in the future schools of Panem they will talk about all of them.
-The boy who created sparks waiting for the girl on fire. Inconsolable.
-Please Suzanne give us Annie's game because after this book I believe wholeheartedly that she tried to destroy her arena and went mad because they tortured her.
-Haymitch having to hit Asterid with a stone. UGH. This book makes me sick to my stomach to a concerning degree.
-Also haymitch being closed in a bird cage?????? This will haunt me.
-Merrilee. In the original series she is always in bed. She has the drugs to sleep. I feel like her illness is just depression. I always thought about it but I think this is confirmation.

I begin to sing. At the window, in the shower, in my sleep. Hour after hour of ballads, love songs, mountain airs. All the songs my father taught me before he died, for certainly there has been very little music in my life since. What’s amazing is how clearly I remember them. The tunes, the lyrics. My voice, at first rough and breaking on the high notes, warms up into something splendid. A voice that would make the mockingjays fall silent and then tumble over themselves to join in.
oh my girl was singing the old therefore here and all the covey songs 🥺.
jump cut to haymitch watching katniss on some camera somewhere and hearing lenore dove’s songs again for the first time in decades 😭.

Lucy Gray in the afterlife when her fuckass ex-boyfriend shows up after getting trampled by rebels thanks to getting defeated by Maude Ivory's granddaughter from 12, who turned Lucy Gray's song into a rebel cry after playing on the Capitol's love of drama and romance to survive the games TWICE

So the only covey we see alive are Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber, as well as Lenore Dove.
We see Maude Ivory and Lucy Gray have gravestones.
So what the heck happened to Barb Azure?
#I know Suzann left who Lenore’s parents were ambiguous and open to interpretation but Barb was a lesbian and Lucy was dead so….#hunger games#the hunger games#sunrise on the reaping#lucy gray baird#maude ivory baird#barb azure baird#clerk carmine#tam amber#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#lenore dove#haymitch abernathy#the covey#coriolanus snow

Finished Round 4 of the Ballad, and this time, I was keeping an eye out for physical descriptions, particularly for Maude Ivory, but they are lacking. Sunrise was even less generous.
Maude Ivory because they don't say she's blonde in the book. That's a movie thing. If we remove movie canon from the equation and let her be potentially more like what we know of the Seam, I am less against her being related to the Everdeens. But because she was cast blonde, I have a feeling Suzanne meant for her to be blonde or didn't care if she wasn't.
Race/ethnicity in Panem rant under the cut.
I enjoy the racial ambiguity of Panem. I think it is telling where race shows up, like the class divide of D12 or the allegory/implication of D11, but it's neat that the rest is left vague. From the first time I read the Trilogy, it communicated how this is a future where many people have a multiethnic heritage to some extent, often with appearances that we would call racially ambiguous, how small Districts have such tiny gene pools that they could have become ethnicities in themselves over the centuries, and terms we are familiar with are no longer in common use. It was cool worldbuilding! And I took it personally, in a good way.
However, the movie casting brings out frustrations with the lack of physical descriptors. In Sunrise, Haymitch isn't described aside from having curly hair of an unspecified color. Hardly anyone gets anything. Lenore Dove merely has red hints in her hair when the sun catches it. Very vague. The Capitol people get descriptions of fashion, but not themselves. And it felt like both a compromise for blond movie!Haymitch and a strange sense that whatever the movies do is canon, to leave it open for casting that won't contradict the books too strongly. Which I dislike. Not on principle, but because Lionsgate didn't do as much with that freedom as they could have. With that in mind, I think Clemensia Dovecoat was written to be Asian in the Ballad, but without the movie casting, she would still be ambiguous (golden brown skin and raven hair). Similar can be said for Lucy Gray.
After the whitewashing of the Seam, it felt more like a lack of commitment to writing real characters of color with intent. And it narrowed the potential for diversity to what Lionsgate wants. There aren't explicitly canonically Asian, MENA, or Latino characters in the books (I'm a Native Seam truther, but even that is still only implied and seemingly accidental on Suzanne's part), since those terms aren't around. It's left to the reader to guess or imagine based on descriptions which aren't specific (which, again, I like but was a missed opportunity in the movies for the most part). In the Trilogy movies, there were some characters I had not pictured as black in the books who were cast with black actors: Cinna (brown hair, green eyes), Atala (tall), Beetee (black hair, ashen skin), Boggs (gray hair, blue eyes), and Paylor (dark brown eyes, but Bonnie and Twill from D8 are pale). It is great that these characters who could have been cast white were not. However, the casting throughout the movies (mostly Trilogy) largely maintained a black-white dichotomy, and those characters, among others, could have been cast with non-black actors of color, adding a bit of richness to the diversity. Because apart from Clemensia, Lucy Gray, and a few side or background characters, there aren't many non-black POC in the movies, either. The movies may have more black characters, a confirmed Asian character, and a half Latina actress, which is good, but they are overall less diverse than the Panem I imagine.
#hunger games#books vs movies#sunrise#ballad#sotr#tbosas#Maude Ivory Baird#POC casting#diversity#Panem#Clemensia Dovecoat#Lucy Gray Baird#Ballad did have a bit better spread with Clemensia and Lucy Gray and I hope that's an indicator of more to come in Sunrise but we shall see

whatever you do, don't think about how heartbroken the covey would have been when lucy gray disappeared. how they just got her back and just as quickly, she was gone.
don't think about how sad maude ivory would have been to lose both lucy gray and coriolanus, her older sister and older brother figure both gone at once.
how they all would've thought that she left them behind for the north, and how none of them would have suspected coriolanus being the reason why she never came back.

I have a question about SotR. Spoilers.
The graves that Burdock shows Haymitch are for Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove. Is Lucy Gray’s empty or did the uncles find her body? Or did she live and maybe SHE was Lenore Dove’s mother? It has to be either Barb Azure or Lucy Gray for her to be a Baird cousin to Burdock (here I assume that Maude Ivory is Burdock’s mother).
This is bothering me. Did I miss any clues?
The biggest alternation to my headcanon is that Mr Everdeen is called “Burdock.” I know it’s a plant and it fits the naming convention, but that’s a rough one. Hard to scream out during sex, poor Mrs Everdeen. No wonder Katniss never uses his given name.

You don’t consider your grandma’s cousins’ children to be *distant* cousins? Name all of them. Name one of your grandma’s cousins.
If Barb Azure is Burdock’s grandmother and Maude Ivory is Lenore Dove’s mother, that would make them 3rd cousins once removed, this does not disqualify Barb Azure from being related to Burdock. From all the theories I’ve heard this one is the most supported by the text.

hi!! i'm the one who requested the hurt/comfort lenore dove x haymitch and i just wanted to say i loved it!! <3
may i request headcanons of the covey post billy taupe's death (mainly centered around CC) bc having billy taupe be exiled is one thing but dead?? and probably since maude ivory is the one who found the bodies the rest of the covey saw them as well and i just keep thinking about how messed up it would be
the covey reacting to billy taupe’s death
note: i hate billy taupe as much as the next person *cough cough sparklebear11* this is just trying to be realistic to the characters i promise!!
sorry it’s short i’m on my way to therapy-
- Maude Ivory found his body, and was traumatized for life. She hated blood, and death- even if it was a guy she hated.
- Barb Azure would be on a thin fence between being relieved of Billy Taupe’s death, and feeling bad. At one point, he had betrayed her cousin- her presumed dead cousin. But on the other, she remembered Billy Taupe as a kid.
- Clerk Carmine would feel like he had made a huge mistake-he had abandoned his brother. It would take a while for him to be able to recover.
- Tam Amber would be overprotective about Clerk Carmine, and they’d spend a lot of time together, becoming not only best friends, but more of a brotherhood then they already were.
- Maude Ivory and Clerk Carmine would also become close, as Maude Ivory was suffering from the loss of Lucy Gray. They’d often fall asleep together, comforting eachother.
- Clerk Carmine would beg for there to be a gravestone for Billy Taupe. Barb Azure would comply reluctantly. However, Lenore Dove would destroy the grave the same day she did her other two criminal acts.
