Now I have a headcanon, that Peeta draws Katniss and her family (Asterid, Burdock and Prim) with the plants associated with their names and when he offers it to Katniss, she says it's missing his portrait. You know, because he IS her family. To which Peeta responds he doesn't have a plant/flower name...

So then Katniss draws something quickly and when Peetas sees it, he asks "What's that ?" (cause Katniss isn't as good as him with a pencil) and she answers : "A dandelion".

Yes, Katniss was luckier and her first stroke of luck was Peeta. He held her hand on the chariot. He raised it. He professed his love on television. He protected her from the careers. He wanted her to be the one who survived. He continued playing the game after he got captured. He warned her about the incoming planes. Hell, he threw her the bread.

Her second stroke of luck? Haymitch. Most importantly, he’d already consciously tried everything she would end up accomplishing but also, he was the one who guided Peeta. Then he sent her the burn gel. The food. The messages that only Katniss would understand. He held her back, just like her dad had held him back, when she needed it. He held her when she couldn’t keep it together. He got the other victors to surround her, protect her. He was holding her hand through mj, with Peeta gone. He was probably advocating for her soooo much more behind the scenes that we’ll probably never get to know.

Her third stroke of luck? Her family. The father whose friendships ensured a protector the day she was born. Her mother who touched so many people that they probably took care of Katniss in their own little ways. Her sister who made her so much more likeable to the Capitol. Her ancestors who left behind songs and stories, herstories that never got told, only for their impact to be felt through her.

Rue. Finnick. Effie. Cinna. Plutarch. Beetee. Wiress. Mags. Thresh. Johanna. Boggs. And an endless amount more but her biggest piece of luck? Time. Time that gave allllll these people to get ready, to be in the exact right places for their next chance at a revolution.

Yes, she’s smart as well. She knew about the berries, she figured out the force fields, she got Coin but, was she really smarter than Haymitch? Was she kinder than Haymitch? Or was it sheer timing and luck what propelled her forward?

Canon details and some assumptions:

Lenore Dove and Burdock are "distant cousins" from Burdock's mother's side. And as we know Lenore Dove's mother was Covey and her "pa's a mystery" then they're related through her mother, too. As Snow tried to kill Lucy Gray, it's unlikely she was out in the open as Burdock's mom so that variation is not included.

Lenore Dove's mother is dead. When Haymitch goes to the Covey graveyard, only Lucy Gray and Maude Ivory are there. There is no Barb Azure in the graveyard, which rules her out as Lenore Dove's mother.

We also know that Barb Azure was seeing a "gal" in TBOSAS but we have no idea if they were secretly partners later and adopted or if Barb Azure is bisexual and/or married a man for whatever reason. From SOTR we do learn that same-sex relationships led to punishment and so a legal marriage wouldn't have been possible for Barb Azure and her gal. A covert "roommates" situation where they adopt orphans? Or one of them gets pregnant from a man but they raise the child together? Anyway, this dynamic does open up to some more questions about the specifics, so one visual in particular could be taken a few different ways.

Lucy Gray mentions her mother while her pa's "name is a mystery." I can't remember if Maude Ivory or Barb Azure's parents were mentioned. So while the children of the Covey grandparents all have the circle indicating female, Maude Ivory and Barb Azure could have fathers who were Bairds, but I wasn't going to get hung up on that detail, but just so we're clear on that part. This is also why I labeled their parents as just that--parents, and not mother or father.

***In this case, Barb Azure did marry Everdeen Sr. There isn't a way I can think of that she's with her gal.

I tried to keep it general with the term "partner," only the software here requires either male or female and when creating a child defaults to generating the opposite sex so it shows a male partner for Barb Azure.

***While I find this the least likely scenario, if we have LGB as Lenore Dove's mother, then I think we also need to consider she had a secret child that became Burdock's mother.

Something something about Haymitch trying SO HARD to push Burdock away and Burdock resisting with all his might.

Something about Burdock only turning away when Haymitch does the unforgivable and physically hurts Asterid.

Something about Burdock still showing Haymitch pity and leading him to Lenore, to a graveyard that was so intimate and treasured by the Covey.

Something about Haymitch watching Burdock so happy and so proud of his little girl, beng a doting father and knowing it was all worth it.

Something about Haymitch turning away Burdock so that the latter will live, have a family, grow old and be happy... and while Burdock manages to have some of that he still, STILL dies young. He is gifted with approximately 19 more years before he is blown apart, Asterid is left a broken woman and Katniss and Prim are orphaned.

Something about Haymitch still watching Katniss after Burdock died and about her reminding him of both his friend and of his sweetheart, Luella.

Something about the fact that when Haymitch is still so traumatized that he feels guilty of letting Katniss and Peeta in, the 'ghost' of Lenore Dove is his conscience after all these years and it's telling him that "the walls of a person’s heart are not impregnable, not if they have ever known love."

Something about Haymitch finally, FINALLY bringing his ghosts our of the darkness, releasing them into the light, by revealing his past to Katniss and Peeta.

Something about Katniss being allowed a glimpse of who her parents had been through Haymitch's narration and gaining a better understanding of Haymitch himself too.
