Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, DStJ, PC, FRS, HonFRSC (née Roberts; 13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013), was a British stateswoman and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold the position. As prime minister, she implemented economic policies that became known as Thatcherism. Theriotype List
So, to start out, for context, I think we've all seen a skeptic comment about how all therians are only "cool" animals. I personally have always enjoyed keeping up with those with "rarer" theriotypes and even using them as examples when these kinds of arguments are brought up, so I've decided to do a little bit of a personal project, that being creating a huge list of the wide variety within the therian community. Below is the list I've created so far, sorted by general species, then adding in subspecies/breeds, all in alphabetical order.
Please keep in mind and understand that for now, I am only putting Earthen animals on this list, mainly so I and the post can keep up, because there's a LOT here already and I know there are hundreds more out there. Maybe in the future I'll make another list with mythical/fictional/etc. kintypes, or someone else can do that for me, you have my full permission, just let me know, but for now, just Earthen animals.
This list does, of course, need more entries though. If you have a theriotype that you don't see on this list, please comment or reblog and let me know so I can add it! You can follow and find it with the tag "foxskys theriotype list".

'And most I like the winter nests deep-hid That leaves and berries fell into: Once a dormouse dined there on hazel-nuts, And grass and goose-grass seeds found soil and grew.'
From 'Birds' Nests' by Edward Thomas
Old hawthorn leaves, a sloe and a red hawthorn berry in last year's nest, unravelling into winter.

Third day of Mammal Week is all about Rodents!
There are a total of 17 different Rodents across the British Isles and we have less than half of that.
Here there is
Grey Squirrel
Brown Rat
Bank Vole
Field Vole
Wood Mouse
House Mouse
Theres also Red Squirrel, Eurasian Beaver, Hazel Dormouse, Water Vole, Harvest Mouse and Yellow Necked Mouse, all of which are native. On top of that theres also some Island subspecies, the Skomer, Guernsey and Orkney Voles. Skomer being a subspecies of the Bank Vole and the latter of the Common Vole. Not forgetting the Edible Dormouse and the Black Rat both of which have been introduced.
So out of our list theres two species which have been introduced. The Brown Rat and of course the Grey Squirrel, the Brown Rat came in from Asia and the Grey Squirrel is native to North America. The Grey Squirrel however is classed as an Invasive Species.
Both of these species are adaptable, agile and unfortunately are known for spreading disease. Notably the Grey Squirrel having a huge effect on Red Squirrel populations who have no immunity to pox. In addition thier aggressive behaviour (amongst other complications) forced Reds into a select few locations, entirely absent from Southern England Mainland.
But now lets talk about teeth!
Teeth are the easiest way to seperate the last 4 species. Mice have cusped molars and Voles have molars that continuously grow. Then to seperate that further the distinction between Wood and House Mice is the notch in the back of the incisors of the House Mouse which the Wood lacks. In Voles its a little more complicated, sometimes its notable by the length of row of teeth, sometimes even the shape of the teeth pattern as seen from the underside but the distinction between Field and Bank Voles is the second molar the Bank Vole has a paired root and the Field Vole have a single open root on the 2nd upper molar!

15.07.24 - Young Darwin Scholarship Day 1
(Reposted from elsewhere)
Day 1 (or afternoon 1 as the morning was spent travelling) was fantastic. I’ll write about it picture by picture (apologies if this gets lengthy).
1-3. Lichens on a tree stump at the field centre. I think 2 is Cladonia pyxidata (Pixie Cup Lichen) and 3 is Cladonia coniocraea (Common Powderhorn). I couldn’t find anything like the first photo in my field guide or online. I wonder if it is a variation of Cladonia pyxidata but I’m not sure (if anyone knows please do tell me). Whatever it is it is beautiful. This was my first time seeing any of these species. It was very exciting!
3-4. 3 is the footprint of a Wood Mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) distinguished by its round pads and 4 is the footprint of a Hazel Dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) distinguished by its triangular pads which indicate its arboreal lifestyle. These are from footprint tunnels through which animals move through and leave footprints in charcoal based ink.
5. A snapshot of my notes on the mammal trapping lesson. It was a lot to take in but fascinating. I learnt lots of interesting things today, particularly about shrews. Shrews are extremely aggressive largely due to their territorial nature and their challenging lifestyle - they have to eat their entire body weight in food each day to survive. If they come across each other they tend to have a stand off - a fight with their teeth which must look a sight with their highly mobile snouts. Their teeth are actually stained with red from iron compounds which is thought to assist with appearing threatening. As shrews age and their teeth wear down they lose their red colouration so younger fitter shrews will appear more dangerous to their older counterparts. The chittering noises from their stand offs can apparently be easily heard by passers by. Like many small mammals they have very short lifespans of around one year so they have very quick and frantic lives. There are many species of shrews, one of which is the Greater White-toothed Shrew which was discovered in the UK by falling victim to someone’s domestic cat and having their bodies recovered. I suppose cats have a role in wildlife research which makes me feel better about liking them in spite of them killing wildlife!
We also learnt some interesting things about hazel nuts and what they can tell us about which mammals ate them. I can elaborate if anyone wants me to but I don’t want this post to get too long.
7. A Longworth Live Trap. We set some up and set them up in the hedgerows round the perimeter of a field. In the morning we will find out if we caught anything.
8. Some aesthetically pleasing banded snails. I saw many snails today.
9. Me on the pebbly beach in the evening. It was so peaceful here. On the way back we stood on the bridge to look for otters but we didn’t see any tonight.
10. Some beautiful and varied shells I found on the beach. (It took me all week to find out what they were and differentiate them from similar looking species. I think they’re Giant Topshells (Gibbula magus).
When I got back to the field centre I was shocked to be met by bats flying around my head (probably some kind of pipistrelle). I thought echolocation was above the range of human hearing so I doubt it was that but I could hear their piercing calls and had tingling sensations in my ears. It was incredible…

Roman Grave and Coin Found in Andover, UK
Wessex Archaeology, working with Southern Water, discovered a Roman grave and coin.
Southern Water’s £900 million ‘Water for Life Hampshire’ programme will see the first reservoir built in England for 25 years at Havant Thicket.
As part of the programme, new pipelines are being planned across the county to increase connections between every corner of the region and especially between key water supply works at Testwood, Otterbourne and River Way, near Andover.
Before any pipes can be laid the company must satisfy regulators including Natural England, Environment Agency, Historic England and Local Planning Authorities that plans will not damage the environment or destroy historical remains.
Dr Nicola Meakins, who leads Southern Water’s enabling team, said: “We build big projects across the region and are spending £3bn between 2020 and 2025 on improving our assets. But before the key can be turned on a digger, my team of ecologists and surveyors have to carry out numerous assessments. Whether it’s the discovery of rare hazel dormouse habitat, badger setts or as in this case archaeological remains, a plan must be put in place to prevent or mitigate damage.
“Roman graves are not uncommon – when the Romans built roads legionnaires who died were simply buried by the side of the road. Wessex Archology learns something new every time one is found however. In this case the discovery of a 2,000-year-old coin helps us to understand what was happening in the area back then.”

After World Book Day, I'm now imagining the gang going as characters from Alice in Wonderland in primary school, in a modern au.
Daisy- Alice
Hazel- Mad Hatter
Kitty- Queen of Hearts
Beanie- Dormouse
George- Cheshire cat
Alexander- White Rabbit
(Imagine a tiny little Alexander in bunny ears and painted on whiskers and a waistcoat and a tiny little Hazel in an enormous top hat).
