Tumblr media
⚠️yes I pirated it and yes i am very critical of it and no i am not a vivzi supporter⚠️
random character to do first i know but mueheheh i have been itching to get my hands on this guy for so long, he NEEDS a dad bod and it physically pains me that he doesn't,, I had to do something about it!!🗣️🗣️
not sure how I feel abt the wings tho I did make them look clipped, but I basically wanted to hide the card symbols all throughout the design heehee
this is basically the first draft of this redesign that got a bit carried away, so it isn't perfect but my lord I had a Vision 🐈‍⬛

I really just LOVE that Husk's main problem with Angel was that he was being "fake" and putting on an "act" and NOT that Angel was unwantedly flirting with him, sexually harrassing him, invading his personal space, and touching him without consent, almost as if Viv wants Husk to completely ignore it or is totally cool with it even though he clearly isn't so we have more of a reason to believe Husk might like Angel.
Remind me why these two deserve to be endgame????

Ganna rant about Episode 4 of Hazbin again. For starters it has the same issue that Seeing Stars did for Helluva boss, that being Loona giving Octavia advice in comparison to Husk giving Angel advice. While the characters situations are different, both Loona and Husk were the wrong characters to pick to give advice, or simply just comfort the other character. I’ve already seen some people say that Charlie or Vaggie should have been the one to cheer Angel up, and that would have made more sense. They’ve known him longer and it’s in character for them to do that. For it to be Husk, not only does it feel forced as an excuse to just hook Angel up with a boyfriend and get the shipping fuel going, but it doesn’t make sense narratively.
In Loona’s case, her situation was flawed because she just MET Octavia, didn’t know a thing about her struggles and spouts to her about how she should be thankful just because her dad is “trying”, and the show tries comparing both girl’s situations when they’re not the same. This is practically the same situation with Angel and Husk. While Husk is aware of Angel, he barley knows him. He hasn’t been at the hotel that long considering the pilot took place only a week ago. On screen, all that Husk knew about Angel was that he was a porn star who constantly flirts with everyone, him especially, and we as the audience only see that and only that when the two interact. However episode 4 claims that Husk can see right through him and know that this is all part of his persona that he displays. If we had more time with these two characters outside of flirty banter scenes, this would make more sense, but instead it’s all tell and no show, being rushed with the little time we’re given. Husk even says that the hotel residents go to him to rant their sorrows while they’re drunk and even THAT happens off screen and that’s the problem, the audience has no reason to believe that Husk knows Angel deep down or even cares enough to want to help him, in our eyes, all Angel’s been doing is sexually harassing him.
There’s no reason why these two need to have an emotional scene together, it’s unearned and unwarranted because we haven’t had enough time with these characters, just like Loona and Octavia, there’s just no purpose or buildup. I also resort back to what I’ve said before: Husk selling his soul to Alastor is not the same as Angel selling his soul to Valentino. The show tries to compare Angel and Husk’s situations and it’s just not comparable because Alastor isn’t a rapist who’s trapping Husk to sell his body and be used like a rag doll constantly. Had it been something like “you’re a drug abuser and I’m an alcoholic”- THEN that would have worked, but that’s not what we get, and this leads me to talking about why “Loser Baby” isn’t good.
Some people have already misinterpreted my opinion, so here’s a few things. Is the song in character for Husk? Yes. Is the song about Husk telling Angel not to act and just embrace himself? Yes. On its own, the song is fine outside of some distasteful lines. The CONTEXT, execution, and placement of the song is the issue. Episode 4’s whole purpose is to see just how much Angel suffers. He’s forced to work like a dog at the studio day in and day out, and he gets abused and SA’d by his boss and other demons constantly. He doesn’t have a say in anything and can never say no because he’s under contract. He can’t Fizz his way out of this one and just go “I quit”, he’s literally forced to work in the porn industry wether he likes it or not, and we see all of that on screen. We also explore just how much this affects him. They reveal some pretty dark stuff here, how Angel doesn’t even want his position as a famous porn star and is so desperate to be numb from the pain and suffering he endorses that he’ll get high constantly and let people drug him for nefarious reasons, it’s his escape. They dump ALL of that info onto us, only for this bullshit to come up:
Tumblr media
So the writers slut shame him, call him a freak and an addict to laugh at because “haha he’s addicted to drugs and a slut”, even though we JUST got done with a scene that confirms HE DOES ALL OF THIS AS A TRUAMA RESPONSE. He said himself he does the drugs and is addicted to numb the pain, and his own flirting (while problematic) is shown to be an act of him hyper sexualizing himself due to what he goes through. It’s not excusable but it’s still a fact, and we’re supposed to LAUGH at him??? That’s what’s wrong with his character and what continues to be wrong, because Viv sees him as the butt of the joke. Every line of dialogue he has is always about sex and how we should laugh because he’s a slut, an it comes off as so distasteful and insensitive to not only people who have been abused/SA’d, but porn actors in general. We’re supposed to laugh when he talks about cock and sex, but the reason he’s doing it is so dark that we shouldn’t be laughing about it at all cause he’s a VICTIM, yet Viv thinks it’s funny. It’s so disgusting and makes my stomach twist. Angel is trapped being in a position he doesn’t even want to be in, yet his entire character revolves around comedic sex jokes, and once you figure out the reason behind said sex jokes, it feels so wrong.
And this is why Loser Baby doesn’t work. Aside from everything else I’ve already said, It doesn’t line up with what Angel is going through, it doesn’t line up with the rest of the episode. If you wanted Angel to have this arc about realizing he doesn’t need to stick to his persona, fine, but you should have done it in a different episode. This is why Husk comes off as telling him to just suck it up and stop whining rather than what he’s actually trying to say. It looks bad with how they executed it, it just looks like he’s telling an SA victim to get over it and stop whining and what’s worse is they compare their situations when it’s not the same. You literally have a scene of Angel telling Husk he lets people drug him, and not even a minute later Husk is calling him a loser. That’s the issue. The show doesn’t know how to read the room, build character relationships slower, is just so incredibly tone deaf and is hypocritical. We’re supposed to feel bad for Angel cause he’s sexualized to the maxes and is having trauma responses of that, but then we’re also supposed to laugh at him and his sex jokes while also finding him hot. Pick a fucking side Vivienne, the show wants to have its cake and eat it too and look where that’s gotten us. The writing is a fucking atrocious mess and yet it had so much potential if Viv actually cared enough to take Angel seriously, instead of just desperately wanting to give him a boyfriend, and a rushed arc where he magically feels better in the end.

Okay so this new episode that came out (Episode 4) was poorly handled.
TW /// SA
- No warning before the show starts...why? And even if there is no way for Viv to add one, for some stupid ass reason, why didn't she announce to the fandom properly "Hey, this will have very deep topics and imagery that may not be suitable for all audiences."? Why have arguments on threads and fail to do this very easy thing. At least if the episode came out, people would get a heads up, and the word would spread faster PLUS people would see that you at least TRIED
- The episode opens up with a scene of CNC porno played for laughs in an episode that tackles SA. Complete tonal whiplash. Why did it have to open up with Angel showing everyone a porno? It serves no purpose other than to get a cheap laugh (that never came) out of me or anyone else who watches and because of the topic of the episode revolved around it. I'msure that if the episode WASN'T ABOUT SA, that joke would not have been there....but it is. There was legit no good reason to start this fiasco off with such a tone deaf opening.
- Charlie is actually fucking useless and a burden in this episode, serving no other purpose other than being the gateway to further the issues that befall Angel when "trying" to help. This all screams forced. Worse of all, Charlie does nothing to actually HELP Angel out of this, even though he has a clear black eye thanks to it all and literal mirrors breaking as a result of the abuse. We never see an actual development between the two thanks to her foolishness and garbage writing, and it's resolved easily as if this is some early Disney cartoon season that's on a strict deadline. Regardless of whether she apologized or not, she essentially caused the issue and did NOTHING to actually clean her mess. The goddamn B A R T E N D E R had to be used to salvage the pieces. So far, Charlie, as a character, is utterly pathetic and has been a burden to the cast twice so far. Vaggie, who tried to prove herself (moreso Vaggie's fault for going the extra mile for no reason but an obstacle nonetheless), also had an issue that involved Charlie's utter lack of a backbone. Hey, what was it that Charlie said in the pilot that her dad taught her and one of the only thingsshe learned from him? "You don't take shit from other demons"
Tumblr media
- Only one scene from the abuse shown was handled well, and it was when Charlie visited, screwed everything up, and Val asked Angel to come to his dressing room. Aside from that, the whole SA imagery is jarring. While this time, the fast pace of it all is not bad, the quick shift into it all with Angel switching from enjoying to hating, to smiling, to frowning, ALONG with the quick pace of it all with the PRIOR KNOWLEDGE SHOWN and the SONG PLAYING, I am getting mixed messages here. Imagery? Shows Angel getting assaulted multiple times with either a forced smile or for some reason ENJOYING sex with Val and the role play situations showcased, is he INTO his abuse? Lyrics? He seems to find arousal in Val controlling him. The song legit reads as follows
Tumblr media
"Addicted to this feeling, I can't help but swallow"
This doesn't read like he is "forced" it reads like he is yearning the toxic relationship. Now if this was one of the main issues with the abusive relationship, where it was a codependency built on romanticising the abuser and Angel learning to break free from that horrible view of someone who never loved him and actively harms him, this lyric would make a lot of sense....but that's not what we are shown at all. From the jump, we are shown that Angel HATES being with Val, to the point of him straight up avoiding his texts and voice messages, they actually do an okay job (despite the shoddy voice work) on showcasing how manipulative Val is and his outright explosive temper through this scene in episode 2. We see that Angel does NOT wanna have association with Val, is tired of it all, and even got drunk to down his sorrows. Yet these lyrics present it all as though it's just a very rocky love life like those songs you hear on the radio with the singer lamenting about how awful their relationship was but still miss their toxic boo-boo. It just...doesn't read like an SA song and could mean anything regarding the type of abuse he is facing. It's kinda vague in hindsight. That's MY take on the lyrics, though.
- Husk's song is a trash fire. He sees Angel is down in the dumps and proceeds to talk shit about him pretty much relaying his sorrows, saying it's okay to feed into your vices, and downplaying the actual situation at hand. So let's get this straight.
Angel- A sexual abuse victim forced into sex slavery to appease all sorts of people's sexual desires whether he likes it or not, including pleasuring his pimp who physically abuses him often all cause he sold his soul
Husk- Gambled his life away and lost his title as overlord, serves under Alastor all cause he sold his soul.
How is this even...the same at all? Even if Husk is lacking some context, he SEES that Angel normalized drinking roofied drinks and works for Val SOMEONE HUSK SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AND WHAT HE DOES but nah, screw Angel. Even if he honest to God (irony) wanted to actually help, why tf would Husk think this was sound advice? Why does Husk just SUDDENLY care? No build up, no memorable dynamic, no nothing. Realistically, CHARLIE should be the one singing with Angel or maybe Vaggie because she heard the story from Charlie. Not Husk. He is self aware enough where he knows this "advice" wouldn't work but nah. Nothing about the song makes sense. Telling someone going through it that "you're a loser" pretty much a no one, an insignificant individual, when VAL has made it clear that Angel would be nothing without him...yeah no the only reason why this whole song "worked" was cause the writers wanted it to, so Angel is happy with being a loser for being a victim of SA and selling his soul to someone who abuses him in various ways consistently.
This episode is terrible
Jarring for any newcomers
Who have no idea who these characters are

Husker: Reimagined
Tumblr media
Character critique + explanation under the cut:
Husker is my 2nd least favorite Hazbin Hotel design, right after the radio demon himself. Husker’s design, however, ranks #1 as the most frustrating, based on this origin and the executive decisions made.
Tumblr media
Throughout the wiki, Vivziepop is quoted referring to Husk as a “magician”, but watching the show, we don’t get that at all, not even from his design, which while it showcases a lot of card suits, still invokes more of a casino/gambler vibe than a magician. Even when he used playing cards as weapons in episode 4, it still came across as more of a gambling thing than a magician thing to me, so I am approaching Husk from more of the casino angle, with magic tricks being a footnote in his abilities.
I like how Husk is characterized as a “husk of his former self” - a dry-humored, secretly empathetic straight-man who’s good at reading people, all which are well-presented in the show. I think that he’s used too much as a tool for lazy expositing by the writers, so my version of Husk will be more of the strong silent type who is only speaks intentionally, besides grumpy grumbles.
Tumblr media
As for his design, the magician/casino thing feels tacked on considering that he was originally an oc gifted to Vivziepop by her younger sister, favoring nostalgia over effective character design.
His design doesn’t feel like a professional character design, it feels like a professional deviantart OC. Not to imply that I am a professional, but I do believe that Vivziepop has poor and tacky character design sensibilities.
Tumblr media
Besides his real-world origin, being a winged cat doesn’t seem to have anything substantial to do with the way Husk lived or died besides “hating cats” and a possible “death by falling” which feels so tacked on and lacking creativity, which is why I have opted to make Husk a manticore from myth and legend, to make sense of these design elements from his official design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose to make Husk a manticore bc in my iteration, I see him being a ruthless casino owner with possible mob affiliations in life, reduced to simply being a gambler in Hell, where he regained power by dealing in souls which ultimately became his undoing.
Tumblr media
The Manticore of myth is described as a man eater that swallows people whole, even the bones, which I think in this case could be a tongue in cheek way for how he treated people in life as a ruthless casino owner.
I think that gambling away his soul to Alastor would be humbling and would have helped him gain some perspective with how his victims felt in life and death, making him more quiet and withdrawn as a result, speaking only when he feels necessary. This makes what he does say have more weight, making interactions feel more meaningful when he opts to speak.
My biggest gripe with Husk, of course, is that he is voiced by Kieth David. Husk’s official design is not something befitting the voice of Kieth David. I suspect they cast him mainly for his singing voice, as the majority of VAs trying out for the role were only doing Rick from Rick and Morty impressions, as according to the wiki, Vivziepop cited Rick Sanchez as inspiration for how she’d like his voice to sound like. I don’t think Rick would fit either for the modern Husk, but his voice would definitely befit the original DeviantArt design.
Tumblr media
Thus I decided to make a design for Husk that would be befitting for the voice talents of Kieth David, opting for a heavier, more boxy design, with 70’s inspired clothing (the era he supposedly died). I used more oranges and yellows for his color palette to cite his sins of Gluttony (orange) and Greed (Yellow/Gold), while also throwing in some green sheen in his black dragon wings and scorpion tail, to balance the everything out. I kept the tophat as I think Alastor would force him to wear it to hide the only part of Husker’s demon form that he actually likes about himself- his coif of hair (as seen in the flashback in Episode 4). Alastor would do this as a silly way to torment him.
Tumblr media
I also kept his suspenders, and kept the card suits motif but much more subtly. The clasps on his suspenders are diamonds, his nose is an upside-down spade, the tufts on his ears and the white patch on his chin are vaguely heart-shaped, and I plan to make his paw pads resemble clubs. Not pictured is an Ace of Hearts tucked away in the brim of his hat.
I dont know how big or tall to make him, but I do want him to hold an imposing figure when compared to anyone sitting down at his bar. His wingspan is definitely going to be bigger than in his official design.
I personally am not a big HuskerDust fan, simply because I see them having as having a mentor/student relationship, with Husk being a glimpse into Angel’s future if he continues down his self-destructive path, and with Angel being a symbol of hope for the future for this old grizzled man.
Also, you can’t tell from the show, but Husk is canonically supposed to be in his 60’s??? I look to rectify that with visible crow’s feet and wrinkles when he emotes.
That is all I have for now, here is a bonus Husk drawing as a thank you for reading this far 🙌

Fuck this stupid baka show man I’m gonna do whatever I want
Tumblr media
ramblings under cut
Okay so here’s a little summary of the reimaginings of each character
Alastor - A hellborn demon that was tasked by Satan to watch over Dani and basically be like a nanny to her and help her with her endeavors. He doesn't particularly like Dani, but he'll put on a bright smile and be a good sport about things. He owes Satan big time and this is his debt being paid. Whatever that means....
Tumblr media
Husk - A greedy, grumpy old manticore that becomes the bartender/chef of the hotel. Has a soul contract with Alastor so works under him for Dani. Actually becomes really good at his job and even begins to enjoy it and spending time with the others. Out of everyone though he seems to spend the most time with Angel Dust. They talk to each other like they know each other. Who knows… maybe they do.
Tumblr media
Sir Pentious - Becomes the second tenant of the hotel. He originally tried destroying it because he wanted the land where it was, but he didn’t know that the Princess of Hell was behind the idea (he doesn’t watch tv lol). Once he finds out the hard way he gives up on his devious plans and wishes to join the hotel and try to be redeemed. Dani was more than thrilled to already have a second tenant! His design is loosely based off a yellow cape cobra mixed with a steampunk fashion sense and weaponry theme. He always tried to one up Angel Dust in weapon design and even considered him a rival, but they eventually get along.
Tumblr media
Selene - Dani’s beloved bodyguard and girlfriend. She is appointed head of security for the hotel and takes her job very seriously. She’s based off of a lunar moth and is the moon to Dani’s sun. She is extremely devoted to Dani and adores her optimistic ideas… even if sometimes they sound a little too out of reach. Also there’s no real twist that she’s a fallen angel. I mean only Dani knows because she understands how traumatizing it was for her and also it’s nobody’s business. They’re a true power couple and always have each other’s backs.
Tumblr media
Dani - Hell’s darling Princess and the apple of her father’s eye, her dream is to help sinner’s be redeemed to Heaven. She does this not only to fix the overpopulation of Hell, but also because she truly believes that people can change for the better if only given the right opportunity and help. She’s extremely optimistic, but she isn’t stupid. She would never force anyone to come to the hotel because she knows people have to want to change to be better. Luckily she has found those who believe in her and want to help her with her goal. The only issue is everyone else in Hell not taking her seriously and thinking her goal is useless and stupid. Boy are they in for a rude awakening.
Tumblr media
Ms. Kino - A small one eyed, one horned purple oni that becomes the hotel cleaner and other chef. Much like Husk she too has a soul contract with Alastor. She doesn’t seem to care as much about it as he does though. She’s more than happy to spiffy up a dusty old hotel and make things nice and presentable. It’s her true passion to make things beautiful after all.
Tumblr media
Angel Dust - Currently the overlord of the Lust ring and one of the main and best weapons dealer in all of Hell. Why he would ever want to help out and manage a dusty old hotel and help the Princess with her deranged goal is unknown. He does have a reason though. He becomes head of management and basically the host of the hotel. He has the natural charisma and people skills needed to run the place and actually volunteers to become the first tenant as well.

Why HuskerDust Isn’t Canon
I’ve seen a lot of Angel Dust-involved ship critical posts lately, all of them cruel and mean-spirited and all of them from those HuskerDust shippers who give the rest of them a bad name and go out of their way to attack anyone with a ship involving either Husk or Angel. They do this because “HD is canon”, and even those who don’t like the ship have resigned themselves to it being canon. But here’s the thing: in both the actual text of the show and in the meta, it’s not. And I’m going to go through several points to prove that it isn’t canon. (Note: these are all tropic flags and nothing else. Consider this a tiny media literacy course.)
Getting this out of the way: this isn’t anti-HD, a discouragement from shipping HD, or saying “it’s literally never going to be canon”. Obviously, people are free to ship whatever they want for whatever reasons they want; this isn’t intended to bully members of the fandom or to shame anyone who ships it, nor to attempt to convince people not to ship it. This is simply a response to claims of the canonicity of the ship being used to bully non-shippers, and speaking from the viewpoint of the narrative, the tropes, and the meta, it is not canon.
tl;dr: I don’t hate the shippers, I hate the bullies. This is not a discourse invitation, this is a trope analysis. If you don’t like what I’m saying, move on or block me. If you think I’m being mean, I really don’t care, because this is specifically a response to people who are being mean all the time. People in the fandom are terrified to be even vaguely critical of this ship because of the potential backlash, but I’m an Aquarius with a block button, idgaf.
HD was not confirmed canon by Medrano in an interview or on Twitter
To get this first point out of the way, the primary proof that HD shippers will use to claim their ship is canon is a Tweet Medrano put out after Episode 4 was put up on Amazon, as well as a Zoom interview where the interviewer asked her about HD.
The Tweet, which included a screenshot of Masquerade and asked what HD shippers thought of the episode, included the ship name. This is an example of engagement farming, a technique used in social media when people will use trending/popular tags, words, and phrases in order to increase engagement with posts and videos. The use of the HD ship name was not a confirmation of the ship; rather, it was used to capitalize on the ship’s popularity, ensuring that the algorithm would distribute it to as many people as possible. We know this was engagement farming because it was simply asking the people who shipped them what they thought of the episode. It didn’t call it a HD episode, nor did it say it was for the HD shippers.
In the Zoom interview, while the person conducting the interview used the term HD, Medrano herself never did. In fact, she went out of her way to avoid using the ship name, and instead, used the generic word “relationship” when describing their future interactions, a word she has also used to describe future progression between Charlie and Lucifer (so, if this makes HD canon, then it also means that Charlie and Lucifer will be a canon romantic ship).
HD was not confirmed canon by Blake Roman or Keith David
In much the same vein as the aforementioned Zoom interview, when Roman and David were interviewed about the interaction between Angel Dust and Husk, both actors carefully avoided using any terminology or wording that suggested a romantic relationship, only talking about the two of them as close friends. If the ship had actually been confirmed by Medrano months earlier, there would be no reason for the two of them to skirt around the issue. There was also nothing teasing the potential of the ship, simply straightforward information about their friendship.
Husk has been called Angel Dust’s “best friend” by Medrano repeatedly
Medrano has always, when referring to their future interactions, referred to Husk as Angel Dust’s “best friend”. Additionally, while she has never shied away from stating when a character has any form of romantic interest in another character, her only comment on Husk has been that he is pansexual, but she has quite specifically never once stated that he has any romantic interest in Angel Dust.
“Loser, Baby” is the “we’re not so different” buddy musical song
Much of Hazbin Hotel can only be understood through the lens of the form of media that it’s taking most of its cues from: namely, musical theater. There are many tropes that exist within musical theater, specifically in the types of songs themselves, that are used as shorthands to tell audiences what relationships are between characters and how they will be interacting going forward, because all storytelling in musicals are abbreviated by necessity, and songs exist to encapsulate large portions of character/story development in short periods of time.
“Loser, Baby” is, tropically speaking, a song that occurs during the main character’s lowest point in the first half of Act II. This is when they have encountered a massive hurdle in their journey (a breakup, a death, getting kicked out of their house or school, losing their dream job, etc) and are feeling hopeless and lost. In this instance, one of two kinds of songs will occur at this point during the show:
The first is the romantic duet, where the MC is dejected and negative, and their love interest is attempting to turn them around. This is the point when the love interest realizes they are in love with the MC, whether they confess these feelings or not, and is a plea for the MC not to give up.
The second is the “snap out of it, you moron” song. This takes place when the MC is on their own and is found by either a character we are familiar with who has realized they misunderstood the MC (who goes from being a point of conflict to a friend), a family member of the MC (usually either a sibling, an adult offspring, or a parental figure), or by a character we have never met before (generally one considerably older than the MC). This is the song where the other character confesses to the MC that they understand their pain because they were once in the same situation, or because they went through a similar painful progression if that situation hasn’t changed. This song typically carries a “suck it up, buttercup” message and is considerably more callous than the romantic duet, because it is a communication of tough love. It’s important to note that this is never a duet between the MC and their love interest.
“Loser, Baby” is quite firmly in the second category. It is not romantic in nature; rather, it’s Husk realizing that he misjudged Angel Dust and, subsequently, telling him “a lot of other people are in your position, I’m one of them, you aren’t special, stop whining”.
If “Loser, Baby” is romantic, Husk is a predator
For the entirety of the series up until this song, Husk has shown that he has absolutely zero interest in Angel Dust romantically. “Loser, Baby” comes on the heels of Angel Dust confessing to suffering from a great deal of physical and emotional abuse and manipulation, as well as crying in front of someone else for the first time, showing his first true moment of real vulnerability. If Husk uses that moment to suddenly show interest in Angel Dust, it says that either A) Husk is only interested in Angel Dust once he realizes that he is emotionally broken and in a vulnerable position, or B) Husk is willing to use this vulnerability to his advantage and subsequently manipulate Angel Dust. Both of these things are contradictory to Husk’s character.
Husk and Angel Dust have minimal interaction in Welcome to Heaven
Episode 6 has two plots: the A plot, which is Charlie and Vaggie visiting Heaven to attempt to bargain with the Seraphim; and the B plot, revolving around Angel Dust’s temptations to regress into his addictions. In the B plot, Husk’s only interactions with Angel Dust are judging him for wanting to do drugs (which directly contradict his claim in “Loser, Baby”, where he expressly states that he’s fine with Angel Dust’s hooking and drug addiction; it also comes while he is indulging in alcohol, his own vice, which is the definition of hypocritical), and being silently proud of him when he doesn’t do drugs. This is the behavior of the Shoulder Angel or of the Detached Father, not the love interest.
Angel Dust is a main character, Husk is not
Angel Dust is a member of the main cast, alongside Charlie, Vaggie, and Alastor. Husk is a secondary character. It isn’t feasible to have a main character pursue a relationship with a secondary character; you can have an MC who is already in an established relationship with an SC, but you cannot build a relationship between an MC and an SC because the SC doesn’t have enough lines or screen time. Keith David is also quite expensive, and there is no way the show will be able to afford the price that would be required for Husk to be a larger presence in the show.
There is a forty year age gap between the two
Sinners do not age, nor do they mature. We see examples of this in every single Sinner throughout Hell; Angel Dust is a good example, as he died in his 30s in 1947, meaning he would be (at minimum) 110 years old. However, he acts like a young man in his early 30s who spent most (if not all) of his life in a deeply repressed home. Another good example is Cherri Bomb, who is clearly in her 20s, but would be at least in her 60s by this point. Because of this, it is easy to determine that not only do their bodies not age, their minds do not, meaning that the age they were at time of death is the age they will be, mentally and emotionally, forever.
Angel Dust died in his 30s. The only official number Medrano ever gave for Husk’s age at death was 75, and she has stated both that he died in the 1970s and he was born before the year 1900. While no specific age has been stated for Angel Dust, he is written to be between the ages of 30 and 35, meaning that there is a minimum age gap of forty years between the two of them. Additionally, if Husk was intended to be the love interest of someone in their 30s, he would not have been specifically written to be an old man.
Angel Dust has never once come on to Husk
Angel Dust is a flirtatious and sexual character. However, his only flirtations with Husk have been responses to statements Husk made that could be taken out of context. Not only does he never take the initiative and flirt with him first, he also never propositions him; the closest he gets is telling Husk he would be lucky to be propositioned by him. (As a side note, Angel Dust has only ever propositioned two characters in the entire show: Alastor, both in the pilot and the first episode, and Alastor’s shadow construct in the second episode).
It could be said that this is because Angel Dust has “true feelings” for Husk and is, therefore, too shy to overtly proposition him, which brings us to the next point:
HD as a ship is built entirely on homophobic writing tropes
There are several points about this ship that are, ironically, homophobic, but I’ll be focusing on the last two points: the age gap and Angel Dust’s sexual nature.
The age gap: the gay male community has, since at least the time of the Ancient Greeks, been plagued with this idea that enormous age gaps are not only fine, they’re expected. Age differences that would never be tolerated in heterosexual or even lesbian couples are waved off when the characters in question are men. This has created the false expectation that many older gay men have--namely that they are “owed a twink”, and that younger gay men are almost required to submit themselves to a much older man as a rite of passage.
Angel Dust’s sexual nature: Husk has quite expressly stated he has no interest in Angel Dust’s overt sexuality, to the point that he refuses to even look at him as a person until Angel Dust reveals other facets of his personality. This suggests that, for a relationship to work, Angel Dust would have no choice but to repress his urges, or that Angel Dust’s sexuality is a front and he actually isn’t that overt. In either case, this would be a direct parallel to Angel Dust’s life as a gay man in the 1930s and 1940s, where he would have been forced to be closeted under threat of prison or death, and either Husk himself or the audience would be forcing him back into a form of that closet.
Crimini has no stated relationship with Angel Dust
Crimini, a character who is slated to appear in Season Two, has been described as Husk’s adoptive daughter who will make up the bulk of his character plot going forward. Not only does Angel Dust have no stated relationship with her, he has never once been mentioned alongside her character at all. If Angel Dust was intended to be Husk’s love interest, that would make him (functionally) another parental figure to Crimini, if perhaps a reluctant one; that would make him an integral part of Crimini’s future plot, but seemingly, the two have nothing whatsoever to do with one another.
Despite the fact that Medrano changes canon based on fan opinion all the time, the show is written too far in advance to change major plot beats just because one ship got really popular
We in the fandom know that Medrano has a tendency to fold in the face of fandom wants and desires. However, between the pilot and season one, the HD fandom was rather small; this would have been when Medrano was working with Amazon, getting future script approval and mapping out the way the story was going to go, and at the time, RadioDust was just about the only thing keeping the fandom alive long enough for interest to remain during the three year gap, and we all know that isn't going to be canon. Because of the sheer amount of overhead and advance planning that goes into something like this--particularly considering that season two was already in production in the wake of season one’s premier--the fact that the HD fandom grew after the season’s release would be unable to have any effect on the show because it would be far too complicated and far too expensive to make big changes. HD would only be viable if it was already planned from the beginning, which it quite clearly was not.
So what's my point with all of this? My point is that the content of media means things, and part of media literacy is understanding the difference between wishful thinking/projection and canon.

HAZBIN HOTEL’S MESSY HANDLING OF THE NATURE OF VICTIMHOOD & SEXUAL MISCONDUCT (a probably incredibly nitpick-y rant, but I don’t give a fuck)
Tumblr media
⚠︎TW: Discussions of Sexual Assault & Sexual Harassment & making rudimentary comparisons between Angel Dust and Valentino. ⚠︎
I really wish that the show had allowed for more nuanced discussion when it comes to the topic of victims and victimhood.
Like, victims can also be wrong, they can be perpetrators of crimes and violence also. People are allowed to dislike a victim of something; no one should be obligated to tolerate someone else’s bad (or even just annoying) behavior because that person has also been hurt. Victims can be depicted and portrayed in a bad light and still have their victimhood acknowledged and empathized with while also still being “bad people” or having done something to victimize somebody else in their pain or trauma, and having that be acknowledged also. Neither of these ideas automatically cancel each other out, they more so exist in a forever winding feedback loop (at least that’s how I see it) until someone is able to “healthily” unpack their trauma.
Then, on top of the show just completely not treating victimhood like a scale, the narrative also can’t decide when it wants to treat abuse and/or sexual assault or harassment as a serious topic that it wants to respectfully address or if it wants to treat these things as something to laugh at and find funny or make brief gag jokes out of that diminishes the potential seriousness of a scene.
Tumblr media
EX: Valentino licking Charlie in “greeting” during their first meeting is played as a funny gag joke (like the music beat doesn’t turn sinister until he looks back at Angel because Val technically wasn’t on the defensive yet since he didn’t know who Charlie was there for) BUT how Valentino purposely decides to touch Angel Dust on his chest after he explicitly says not to touch him is treated as disrespectful and disgusting as it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, these are the same fucking disrespectful behaviors. But anytime Valentino does some fuck shit to anyone other than Angel it’s played for a joke (outside of when Angel was worried for Nifty, kind of), despite the fact that when Val does it to Angel nearly the exact same thing is played seriously.
PART ONE: STATIC VICTIMHOOD
When Valentino first meets Charlie and licks her arm he’s pushing a boundary for his own amusement - and, given the theory(?) that his saliva produces some sort of aphrodisiac, probably attempting to “mellow her out” so to say as well. He can’t kill Charlie, he’s smart enough to know that at least, but apparently everyone knows that she’s a pushover and so he can assert a level of dominance over Charlie by licking her to make her uncomfortable, and to lord over the fact that he was able take some tiny bit of her autonomy away like that, then verbally flustering her (further knocking her off kilter so she’s easier to manipulate) by propositioning her.
There is a direct parallel in this type of boundary pushing behavior (specifically of a sexual nature) that Angel does as well, it’s just not born of the same thing that Valentino’s is. Where Val makes people uncomfortable and domineers them as a way to disarm them and make them easier to manipulate for his own satisfaction, Angel does it as a form of deflection so that he feels like he has more power than he actually does. It’s a defense mechanism, but an incredibly unhealthy one (which is normal).
The show had an opportunity with this parallel to comment on how both versions (albeit to different levels) are bad, but it didn’t. Now, you can certainly infer that Angel was being incredibly rude and inconsiderate when he was constantly coming onto Husk despite the other’s clear dislike for it and how uncomfortable it made him by how once they become friends in “Masquerade” that harassment just stops, but forcing an audience to infer character development and story messages is not good writing the way it’s done in the show. Angel just stops entirely without any discussion or hint at the unfavorable parallel which means that there is no lesson to be learned from its existence. The emphasis on “this is a bad action too, despite Angel being a victim” is not there, it’s only treated like incredibly unacknowledged character development that’s only actually considered as legitimate because the fans are over-analyzers. How quickly his behavior is brushed aside without proper (or any) acknowledgment is ignoring an actual issue instead of addressing it and then acting as if the issue was never there in the first place.
We know why Angel stopped harassing Husk but not why his harassment was bad in the first place. The audience knowing about a topic that’s briefly touched and filling in blanks does not mean that the show was written well. The harassment is played like a joke until it disappears, not played like a joke (specifically when Angel is the harasser) until someone calls him out on it fully and he apologizes and then he stops.
As far as the show is concerned, the problem isn’t that Angel purposely makes people uncomfortable (in a similar, but still more understated, manner to Valentino) as a form of deflection and posturing, it’s that he’s fake. There’s a difference there. What the show actually does is erase that bad behavior instead of objecting to it, which I’d be willing to bet has led to some - especially younger - fic writers copying Angels unhealthy behavior within the framework that it’s just “flirting” and not a direct crossing of other characters’ boundaries.
You have to make shit like that explicit in a show where you’re claiming to be seriously and respectfully tackling these subjects. No one should be allowed to get a pass for things that on another character would be viewed as morally reprehensible just because they’re a main character/a part of the core Hotel cast, this confuses the storytelling and messages. Just because a few people in the audience know an action is wrong and then will apply further insight onto it themselves does not mean that the show itself accomplished that same amount of introspection, and in Hazbin’s case that’s exactly what happened. The show is being praised for something that it did not do. If parts of the audience did not already know that Angel harassing Husk was bad (despite the fact that it’s played for laughs every time, and once during “Masquerade” in a way that’s supposed to make the audience feel bad for Angel alone) then they’d come out of season one not thinking twice about the way Angel harassed Husk; Husk who eventually gets so fed up with Angel’s constant barrage of unwanted advances that he began dreading anytime Angel would say something even remotely suggestive and so tried to anticipate his innuendos so that he could cut Angel off before he could even start. The people who couldn’t understand past what the show was telling them (through its framing of characters and their actions) was “right” and what was “wrong” wouldn’t’ve picked up on the fact that Angel is being a problem when he harasses Husk because he’s sexually harassing him and that it’s not cute or proper flirting or just “wrong” because it’s a negative coping mechanism for Angel to have or any of that shit.
Also, the overall issue is framed as if Angel’s actions are only self destructive and that’s why they’re bad: Angel acting “fake” as a defense mechanism in order to give himself some semblance of power and autonomy back over to himself because of how thoroughly he frequently gets it stripped away by Valentino. That self destruction is only shown through the lens of pity though, there is no mild scolding involved outside of telling Angel he’s got issues. Him harassing Husk and Alastor is never framed as a problem specifically because you’re meant to laugh every time it happens and because Alastor shoots him down immediately afterwards. The narrative never scolds Angel for harassing Husk because it’s not written well enough to be able to handle both issues, so it just erases the bad thing that doesn’t fit within its narrative that “every victim is a good person” and only focuses on the ways in which Angel’s unhealthy behavior impacts him and puts him in danger and is unhealthy and unfair to him.
Acknowledging the fact that self destructive behavior isn’t good or healthy, especially while also still validating whatever circumstances led the person to such behavior, is great! Now just also acknowledge that that self destruction is not without its risks to the people around the victim as well. If Husk wasn’t the way he was, and the show wasn’t the way it was, he could’ve come out of his interactions with Angel having been victimized by Angel, and he wouldn’t be fucking wrong in not wanting anything to do with Angel after he’s become Angel’s sounding board to lash out at and sexually harass to make himself (ie: Angel) feel better.
This is coming from someone who has experienced both sexual harassment and assault and who has non-“good victim” tendencies as a result of those experiences and a few other things too, by the way. In my experience, verbal (sexual) harassment is not given the same weight as physical harassment and sexual assault or rape. It just isn’t. Most people can’t even see verbal abuse as anything but a mild inconvenience and, while they will scold and be disapproving of the perpetrator, the majority of the weight of ending or not “encouraging” the harassment is still put on the person on the receiving end to be able to “rise above” and ignore and “get over” everything, or to “stop enticing” their harasser. Excuses for the perpetrator often sound like: “It’s just a harmless catcall they didn’t even touch you” or “well they’re going through something bad too so just give them a break” or “it’s just flirting” or “they just like you”. The mental damage that someone takes from their being verbally sexual harassed not being taken seriously at all, but them still feeling horrible about it, can cause people to feel weak for having those feelings at all and tends to lead to them staying silent and just learning to deal with the harassment; harassment that often leads to assault. An instance of verbal harassment cannot then repeatedly be played for a joke in a show that is claiming credibility and claiming that it is handling sexual assault and abuse properly and with respect. As a result people will overlook one form of harassment to focus in and condemn another, leaving the other - seemingly lesser - thing to be left up to interpretation or not internalized as also a problem as well, because that’s what the show did.
There could’ve been discussion about how even as a victim people’s unhealthy coping mechanisms can still pose a problem to others. Being a victim of something or someone cannot excuse that person themselves’ bad behavior, and that’s a dangerous mindset to not dissuade and to subconsciously push. We can empathize with Angel (since this is an adult show all of us should have the ability to understand this duality) and still acknowledge, with the same weight that we do his abuse, Angel’s own messy behavior. You can’t just be allowed unchecked to show sexual assault as bad and then leave the clear sexual (albeit verbal) harassment that’s being shown without a moral, because then the issue just gets dropped and you’re ignoring another (even more common) form of abuse.
My first time watching “Masquerade” I found myself empathizing with Angel even though I hadn’t (and still haven’t) attached to his character in any significant way; I’d also long since grown uncomfortable (and felt stupid) about not feeling good when knee jerk reacting to Angel harassing Husk by laughing at my tv though, and neither of those feelings cancel out the other. Around the time that you could tell that Husk was genuinely bothered when they were doing the trust fall exercise is when the joke fully stopped being funny for me. I know that Husk cutting off Angel to say: “I swear to fuck, if you say dicks…”, wasn’t meant to be Husk feeling uneasy around Angel (it was just to show him being fed up with Angel’s hyper sexuality in a “funny” way) but that in no way stopped the reaction from pinging uncomfortably in my mind regardless. It stuck with me so well, even, that when Vaggie told Husk that he had to be the one to deal with Angel after Angel’s outburst/breakdown I instantly objected; as far as I was concerned after Husk (even after repeatedly being harassed after expressing his dislike for said harassment) asked Angel if he wanted to talk and then Angel not only went to harrass Husk again but then also lashed out at him after Husk rightly rejected him Angel was no longer his problem anymore.
That’s not to say that I don’t think Angel deserved to be given some leeway or deserved not to be forgiven or that someone shouldn’t have gone to make sure he was okay in general, but even now I still don’t think it should’ve been Husk that had to go run after him and cheer him up. Especially considering the fact that Husk isn’t the one sponsoring Angel, and Charlie actively says that she’s to blame for Angel’s sensitivity at that moment; Charlie’s a big girl I don’t see why, even with her feelings being a little hurt, she couldn’t have gone and made an actual effort to make amends then, and when I first watched the episode that’s what I though was going to happen. Husk did not provoke Angel there on purpose or with malicious intent after he realized Angel wasn’t doing well, Angel just did not want that kindness at the moment in the way that it was being offered (which does happen) and maybe he didn’t trust the kindness due to trust issues he has from Valentino either, but that does not excuse his behavior and only serves to explain it. Forcing Husk to then go deal with and cheer up the dude that’s been repeatedly harassing him and not taking him up on his offers to connect didn’t rub me the right way. Yes, people shouldn’t give up on their friends or loved ones too quickly when they’re lashing out after having gone through a rough event, but 1.) Husk and Angel aren’t friends and Husk is in fact only at the Hotel at all because he’s being forced to stay in the first place, and 2.) other people are not obligated to put up with someone else lashing out at them regardless of if that someone else is hurting, period.
If we were to be given backstory on Valentino that shows that he was a sex slave worse than Angel is when he was human - no freedom from his “work” ever, had to sleep in a cage, was treated like an animal, and was constantly literally shackled and shit - none of that would suddenly erase what he’s done to Angel or spontaneously make it “okay” because Valentino’s only acting out due to trauma, no matter how much you might feel for him after learning that. That’s not how that should work, where because you’ve been a victim once you can now never be held accountable for any wrong actions you perpetrate again or some shit.
Like, Angel Dust is still a bad person, he is just also a victim of abuse and rape. He fully, alongside Vaggie, was more than prepared to murder Sir Pentious despite the fact that he was no longer a threat by the time that he’d been found out as a mole and they all saw him be left for dead and then begin to cry, and despite what the Hotel was even made for. This is a character trait of Angel’s (ie: how easily he’ll kill & the few hints of his past in the mob) that’s presented pretty neutrally though, and is never really something that Charlie or the show paints as bad within the context of the show’s morals (or even as something the characters should stop doing in order to be able to repent).
All of which just kind of add to the show’s (and all Vivziepop properties in general) tendency to mix messages. When Angel does something bad it’s funny because the narrative said so, but when a one off character does something similar to what he did (because that character isn’t supposed to be liked) now all of a sudden that same action from earlier will be framed as horrible. This back and forth then directly leads into the show framing rape and sexual harassment and abuse as bad only until they can be framed as funny.
PART TWO: ARE RAPE JOKES FUNNY OR NOT?
My - and other people’s - anger and/or disappointment is not rooted in the assumption that we all missed Angel and Husk’s relationship development; and also if a lot of people/the show’s creators are claiming that a show has good representation (no matter what type) people are going to test that out for themselves, and Hazbin does come up lacking in regards to the back and forth way that it both treats SA seriously and then turns around seconds later to turn SA into a gag joke and not treat it seriously.
The issue is not that Angel was harassing people in general, but that it was not treated narratively like an issue in regards to how he continually sexually harassed Husk and the show never treated it as anything but a funny recurring joke. We know why Angel acts like that, yes, but the reasoning doesn’t excuse his behavior, it only explains it, and at no point does his harassment get properly addressed.
He never apologizes for harassing Husk or lashing out at him when Husk was not the actual source of his pain; the show decided to just forget this and have Angel not do it again - I suppose since he became more comfortable with everyone at the Hotel and no longer felt the need to act anymore - and also have Husk comfort Angel without bringing up how actively uncomfortable we saw Angel make him multiple times for reasons that we as the audience can only infer, which is where people’s problems lie. We’re supposed to laugh at Husk getting uncomfortable by Angel’s pushing unlike when we are shown Angel getting uncomfortable when around Valentino.
Similarly things like Pentious being bodily dragged away after impulsively announcing that he’d have sex with everybody - clearly regretting that choice because he didn’t mean it and as such not giving real consent - are treated like a funny gag for the audience to laugh at instead of the horrible scenario it is too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Compare that to how seriously Angel’s possible SA at the hands of Valentino is portrayed with a fairly high level of seriousness and then wires do cross. The show does go back and forth on when it wants to take SA and SH seriously and when it doesn’t. Also, Medrano has curated a Fandom of over analyzers fairly purposefully considering all the hidden details and messages/hints Vivziepop shows tend to have in the background of their animated scenes and how often characters vocally tease the audience; just because you don’t want to think about the show that hard or that seriously doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone else is being ridiculous. Plus, the show is handling serious topics, so as such the conversation around those topics are going to be just as serious.
You can say that the target audience for the show should already know that how Angel acted towards Husk before “Masquerade” wasn’t okay, but I’d argue that Angel’s SH of Husk is a much harder thing for a lot of people to wrap their heads around as an actual problem in real life than Valentino clearly maliciously hitting, threatening, and abusing Angel is. Most everybody can clock extreme forms of abuse like that, the things that people will deny and make the most readily accepted excuses for are smaller instances like making others uncomfortable with constant advancements, unwelcome sexual comments, or catcalling and reconciling with the fact that people can renege on their consent even in the middle of a sexual act or that if someone has to wear someone down/pressure them into sex that the sex cannot then be counted as fully consensual.
Physical and parental abuse often work the same way; people can identify when watching tv shows that the over the top smashing bottles and calling kids names and running after them to beat them and break their bones is abuse, but some of those same people won’t count locking a child in a dark room as punishment as abuse or just hitting their child when ‘they really deserve it’ as abuse - or even heavily teasing them or not allowing their child any privacy as abuse. Which is then why depicting these smaller (or less conventional and readily identifiable) acts of abuse and sexual harassment and assault with just as much care as the bigger more obvious examples is so important.
TL; DR: Eight episodes or not it would’ve taken two short lines for the show to properly address Angel’s SH of Husk as a problem (then have Husk forgive Angel in the face of his regret because Husk is understanding enough about his situation, and have Angel own up to his own faults while also not treating victimhood like a ‘get out of jail free card’ to excuse any victim’s bad actions) and they could’ve easily done away with Sir Pentious getting dragged away to have non consensual sex as a joke entirely; then the show wouldn’t be being criticized for having a tonal problem when it comes to how wishy washy it is about which characters SA and SH is taken seriously and which ones aren’t and are treated like a joke, and could then accurately claim to have delved into sexual assault, rape, and rape culture respectfully even as a show focused on comedy.
Anyway, I started and finished this thing in March and April of last year so keep that in mind, I guess. Also, mind my repetitiveness; I just wanted to keep the length and not edit any more than I already had fr.
