The Randolph County Infirmary

Winchester, Indiana

The Randolph County Infirmary is so haunted that paranormal investigators have fled the building leaving all their equipment behind. Spirits from the past abound in this place, as they do in many of the infirmaries, asylums, and so-called poor farms of that era. The infirmary served as a homeless shelter, foster home, psychiatric ward, and even rehabilitation center. Death followed for many of those people seeking refuge here. Accounts of tuberculosis, accidents, old age, and suicide were common. Then there are also stories of mistreatment and abuse at times. There is even a cemetery on-site, with fifty-plus unmarked graves.

Investigators found evidence on thermal cameras of a figure walking toward them, shadows moving through the halls, doors slamming, and extreme cold spots. Some have witness full bodied apparitions walking up and down the run down hallways of the infirmary. Others hear or captured voices coming from the different rooms. Also the doors have also slammed shut all by themselves. Guest have also heard unexplained knocks coming from somewhere in the building.

HAUNTED HOSPITAL: HEILSTÄTTEN (2018)

This is a really weird German found footage film that mixes the aesthetics of an abandoned sanatorium with prank youtube. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The twist is interesting, the movie is interesting, it plays a lot like an episode of Ghost Adventures but with actual activity . The actors do a good job with the script, overall not a bad film, just a bit plain. The story itself is new but the spooks were not (though I did like when the unlocked chain turned into a continuous loop chain, that was fun, Grave Encounters-y).

This movie is based around a bunch of youtubers who are trying to get mad views so they do a spooky challenge by breaking the law and going to an old tuberculosis sanitarium (because nothing is more frightening than breaking the law). We have your classic annoying prankster brothers,  a beauty guru, and a young upstart who is looking for her place on the internet (wouldn’t know anything about that hahaha please follow my blog). Theo is our tour guide and he is very straight forward about not liking the pranksters content, it is ruining today's youth! Theo also wants to make sure everyone is very appreciative of the heavy history that comes with the Haunted Hospital for no reason in particular, don’t you mind one bit.

As the kids begin to set up for the evening creepy stuff starts to happen and the beauty guru gets a jump scare by another random guy who they tell to fuck off and he does but little do they know it’s to be the first death of the movie! Dun dun dun! Only after our beauty babe sees a full bodied (and full bloodied) apparition in the bathtub and literal writing on the wall do our first group of two (2) attempt to leave when they discover the real dead body of the guy and things become really real for all of them. Everyone starts trying to get out but of course they all split up to do it, and Theo is in the basement all alone so the daring duo go down to find him. He is in the basement alright, but so is something else, all three (3) kids in the basement get got. 

The final prank brother goes down and in a rather gruesome scene with an elevator cable we are down to just the young upstart, Marnie. She has actually been in Heilstätten before with her sister and Theo and when they were here Marnie saw an apparition which somehow led to an accident where her sister is now in a wheelchair. Marine claims she came back for Theo’s safety but he is certain she only came for youtube clout. This becomes clear when we find out that Theo isn’t dead after all, he was doing a “prank” this whole time. Turns out he has a weird goth girlfriend and they bugged the whole sanatorium just to haunt these kids and kidnap them. He starts to do surgery on them but the whole “Marnie being missing” thing was really bumming him out so he had to go chase her, but she gets away!

I guess we are to believe that Theo and his girlfriend killed the annoying pranksters and the beauty vlogger because no cops ever showed up? They kind of just left that part off like Marnie ran all the way home and never said a damn thing to anyone about anything, not even her sister (but she had to, right? She was covered in blood or blood like substance). I wish they would have just had a little more on the ending there to make the movie complete. Sure it was nice to see Theos end and that his girlfriend was kinda/maybe a spooky ghost the whole time though but still. Pretty crazy to think Theo would do that just for a video though. I suppose it just goes to show that some people will do anything for other people's attention (please comment, like, reblog, and follow for more reviews).

Apparitional visitor or simple prank?

I'm actually disappointed that hospitals aren't haunted by benevolent spirits. Spirits that have no qualms about interacting with patients & staff. Spirits who know a living patient is gonna start circling the drain before any of the staff, and alert them. Spirits who died from a medical mistake warning nurses & doctors if they're going to make that mistake again. Spirits who show up to help hospice and dying patients transition without fear. And hell, even the curmudgeonly but harmless ghost of ol' Mr. George still occassionally setting the bed alarm off in one specific room & grumbling about having to pee even though he always had a Foley.

I just think that would be nice. As long as we don't have the ghost of Karen or Kyle hitting the call bell every 60 seconds & screaming they're out of ice while throwing the pitcher at you

My mom works as a CNA/PCA for a hospital, and she has some funny stories (none of which violate hipaa).

One time, one of her coworkers was taking vitals of a quadriplegic man, when the bathroom door (which was 100% shut since the man didn't use it) suddenly swung wide open. The nurse looked at the empty bathroom, then at the poor man, whose eyes got really big (👁👁), and said, "I'm so sorry," before making a mad dash out to the hall.

Hospital.

Their body isn't there anymore. It's been buried or burned some place they can't reach it. Their loved ones lingered just long enough to watch them slip away, before they went too and other bodies filled the beds with their own loved ones simply counting down the seconds.

The only thing that remains is the stink of death poorly masked by sterile walls and rubbing alcohol. A ghost caught within its walls has no voice, no thing to anchor it except the anger and grief of their own death. They must linger on that final moment and consume them for all time. Death becomes their obsession, not the living or the past. It is were the fear is most palpable. What's worse than standing on the threshold of darkness for all eternity?

Haunted Hospital: Heilstätten (2018)

Very spooky found footage "Let's spend the night in the creepy abandoned Nazi sanitorium" movie. Very creepy atmosphere, some good scares throughout, and a few fun twists. Also a very unique angle in depicting YouTubers as people instead of cartoonish one-dimensional stereotypes.

It is however, also in German, and not necessarily the easiest kind of movie to follow while reading subtitles.

plot summary: in an attempt to go viral, a group of teenage YouTubers taken on a 24-hour challenge at an abandoned hospital, but the unexpected arrival of a sinister guest turns their fun night into a horror story.

umm… so… let’s just say this movie and I are not on speaking terms. Heilstätten might have set out to be creepy, but somewhere along the way, it just lost its footing. honestly, when I first saw it back in 2018, I hated it. like, really hated it. there’s that one sneaky plot twist at the end—I'll give it that. but let’s be real: even that twist couldn’t rescue this mess. fast forward to now, and, surprise surprise, I hate it even more. what a rewatch. it’s like ordering a burger and only getting the lettuce. right off the bat, this film deserves a big fat warning: “excessive use of F-words ahead!” every other sentence was practically an F-bomb. it was like they were in some weird “F-bomb Olympics,” thinking if they sprinkled in enough profanity, it’d somehow get scarier. newsflash: it didn’t work. it felt more like an awkward language exercise than a horror film. and let’s not ignore the English dubbed version we got here in Malaysia, because wow, what a mood killer. the dubbed voices? so fake, it felt like they were reading cue cards in some basement. horror is all about atmosphere and tension, and this dubbing just… murdered it. it was the least scary horror film I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something! for real, I’m still holding out hope that Netflix will release it in its original German—maybe it’ll feel less like a soap opera if it’s in the language it was meant to be. so, here’s my dilemma: do I ever give Heilstätten another chance? probably not. but part of me wonders, "can this movie redeem itself?" I mean, stranger things have happened, right? but right now, it’s hard to see it moving beyond the “cringe watch” category. between the F-bomb marathon and the lifeless dubbing, this horror flick could double as an unintentional comedy. if you’re hoping for genuine scares or an adrenaline rush, skip this movie, unless you’re collecting disappointing horror movies for a cringe marathon.
