R.I.P. Maj General Joe Henry Engle (1932-2024) On July 10, 2024 USAF test pilot & NASA astronaut Maj Gen Joe H. Engle passed away aged 91. Engle earned his pilot wings in 1958 and it was Charles "Chuck" Yeager who recommended Engle for the USAF Test Pilot School and the Aerospace Research Pilot School. Joe Engle was part of the hypersonic X-15 flight research program (16 flights) and flew the rocket aircraft three times above 80 Km earning him USAF astronaut wings. Selected a NASA astronaut in 1966 (group 5), Engle was support member for Apollo 10, backup member for the Apollo 14 and was planned as LMP for Apollo 17 but replaced by geologist Harrison Schmitt. Engle flew on space shuttle orbiters "Columbia (STS-2) and "Discovery (51-L) the first to wear the NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster Alaska III chronogaphs in space.
(to twerk, an etwas herumreiĂen- ziehen, The Twerk, engl.)
a Zombie, (Film-)Zombies, siehe Hollywood oder auch an Halloween, wo sie regelmĂ€Ăig mit sehr schlechtem blassen ĂuĂeren die Leute erschrecken : (with the) Po in/upon some âBi-â(sexual), White folks or people, the so-called White/Whites
Harris & Son.
Zugverkehr
Halloween: Ball & Been!, balls (by males), BĂ€lle gewesene!
Cock ân Ball(s). Alte Musikstile.

greatestheights replied to your post: 2018 book roundup
holy shit. that is incredible tbh what were your faves out of the adult and picture books? iâm sure itâs pretty hard to narrow down, so no worries if thatâs too tall an ask!
Not at all! For adult books:
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank GreenÂ
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
Educated by Tara Westover

Spinning Silver by Naomi NovikÂ
Textbook by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Iâm also including Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak and Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad by M.T. Anderson in this category - for different reasons, they each have an adult bent even though they are marketed as YA.
The picture book list is quite a bit longer so itâs going under the cut, but it includes both books that appealed to me aesthetically and those which had narratives or phrasing that I loved:
Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts
After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again by Dan Santat
All Different Now: Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom by Angela Johnson and E.B. Lewis
The Antlered Ship by Dashka Slater, and Eric and Terry Fan

Rishi Sunak steps up to the lectern of doom outside Downing Street, illegitimate, unelected, with no manifesto. The ungovernable party avoided the instant cataclysm of a run on the pound that may have come had Boris Johnson been refenestrated. But thatâs the end of the good news, the forecast is bleak.
How Sunak will shape up is anyoneâs guess, but he has the advantage of the lowest ever bar if he wants to improve on his two disgraced predecessors. One scar he bears is from that boast to Tunbridge Wells Tories that he had deliberately diverted funds from deprived urban areas to affluent places like theirs. Now we shall see if any concept of levelling up has gone for ever. A budget planned in days will reveal his intent. We know our leaders not by their words but by their budget priorities, and there may end whatever blip of a honeymoon he hopes for.
The country now pays a âmoron premiumâ in higher borrowing costs for the stupidity of a party that chose Liz Truss to trash lendersâ confidence in Britain. Now a âsensibleâ pair of hands turns the ship into that grim âsafeâ haven we know so well: the captain and chancellor will crack the whip, batten down the public spending hatches and cut rations and pay. The annual inventory of HMS Britain taken last week by the Institute for Government and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) found shocking conditions in public services. The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, warns of âeye-wateringâ remedies: expect leeches and arsenic.
Everyone talks of âhard choicesâ. But remember they are choices. This threatened programme of austerity is a political choice, not an economic necessity. Truss crashed the last chance the government had to borrow, which would be the normal Keynesian way to ease an oncoming recession. Now, the straitjacket is no borrowing for day-to-day spending, only for investment. But thereâs no better time to be honest with voters who feel the depth of the crisis and blame the governing lunatics who chose tax cuts for the best-off instead of necessary tax rises.
Public services are at breaking point: ambulances are stacked for hours outside A&E while headteachers are warning of huge cuts in their stricken state schools, which are still funded below 2010 rates. The Institute for Fiscal Studiesâ green budget graphs show steep falls in each departmentâs budget with cuts of over a quarter in benefits, housing and local councils. Torsten Bell of the Resolution Foundation warns of the âcolossal fall in incomes next yearâ, with a horrific graph showing the depth of social injustice: those at the bottom lose 15% while top earners lose just 3%. The less you have, the more you stand to lose.
In signing up Sunak, the Tory party will embark on even deeper austerity in search of ÂŁ40bn in cuts. Voters may not mind that the new prime minister is richer than the King, but it doesnât help if he ignores starving children when only families living on less than a shocking ÂŁ7,400 get free school meals. Tory MPs frightened for their seats are cakeists who want fiscal discipline. Yet even they may rebel at any medicine that prescribes cuts to services used by pensioners or adult social care.
Expect little talk of âprotecting the most vulnerableâ or âcompassionate conservatismâ from Hunt; he has taken Rupert Harrison, the former chief of staff to George Osborne and architect of austerity, as an adviser. Lest anyone forget, Paul Johnson of the IFS describes that era as âcompletely unique in history for the scale of spending cutsâ. The Institute for Government and the CIPFA say further cuts are impossible. There is nothing left to scrape off the bones of Britainâs derelict public services.
But if you want a sign of how the mood is changing, even among the most orthodox disciplinarians, consider the surprise intervention from Mervyn King, the former governor of the bank of England. He said thereâs âa strong case for higher public spendingâ and that austerity would be more difficult this time round. Back in the day, King praised Osborneâs devastating mid-year axe-swinging in his 2010 budget.
Osborneâs decision to make cuts during a recession led to a deeper recession and slower growth. The UKâs growth has since fallen behind equivalent countries. King seems to have learned from this disaster. Now he tells the BBC itâs âtime to front upâ and tell the public they need to pay âsignificantly higher taxesâ. No more pretending US tax rates can fund European-style spending, he warns. Heâs right â and these facts are best coming from a reformed austerian. King not only backed Brexit but even called for a killer no deal with the EU; now he avoids mentioning Brexit at all. But that gives him all the greater heft in calling for tax rises when the likes of Iain Duncan Smith still mendaciously demand âefficiency savingsâ that donât exist.
Whatâs needed, says the economist Paul Johnson, is a five percentage point rise in income tax, lifting tax rates to 25%, 45% and 50%, which, he tells me, would raise about ÂŁ50bn. That requires a transparent and honest conversation with the public. He suggests correcting many existing tax absurdities: uncap council tax on high-value properties, for example, which still yield less than the old rates. Or have pensioners pay national insurance on all income, as they are one of the groups least likely to be poor (a quarter of pensioners have ÂŁ1m in wealth or more).
Labour has its own plans for raising taxes, including windfalls, abolishing the non-dom status that allows people born in another country to pay tax only on their UK income, imposing VAT on private schools and cancelling some of the ÂŁ175bn blown on tax relief, according to the IFS. Wealth is grossly undertaxed and trillions have been secreted in homes that have multiplied in value which their owners arenât taxed for.
But the hard truth is that the bulk of tax everywhere comes from VAT, income tax and national insurance contributions. Even with taxes on wealth, thereâs no avoiding most earners paying more. Politicians never dare advocate tax rises before an election, but this time there is a groundswell of economists preparing the ground for the public to choose taxes over cuts. Had we taxed more to invest in human and physical capital, as France, Germany or the Netherlands have done for decades, we might be up there with them. Low taxes donât breed prosperity: thanks to Truss, the public now knows it.
With Sunak now leading the country, we can expect two more years of turmoil: look how even the erstwhile âsensiblesâ such as Ben Wallace and Alok Sharma backed Johnson. He warns heâll be back, hovering over these âhard choicesâ to swoop back for an election if Sunakâs punishments prove lethally unpopular. Labour is now all but certain to win according to most psephologists. Rejecting austerity, it promises to account for every penny raised and spent. Voters need to know these are all choices, not an iron destiny.

WFS 359 - John Gierach REPLAY from 2018 - AK Best, Ed Engle, Thomas McGuane
Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/359
Presented By: Zoe Angling Group, Jackson Hole Fly Company, Togens Fly Shop
Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors
John Gierach breaks out an amazing episode in this one as he talks about how he came to become one of the greatest fly fishing writers in the world. We talk about some of his books including the famous, Trout Bum and we also chat about his favorite writers.
We also dig into the hippie movement in the 60s, weed, and death in Colorado Fly Fishing. I'm excited to share a little perspective into the life, times, struggles and stories of the great John Gierach.
Show Notes with John Gierach
12:45 - John Shewey was on in episode 16 and talked about the process of writing and battling resistance.
15:20 - Thomas McGuane said as a writer, your only currency is your readership. My currency is my guests as noted by John in this episode.
17:00 - Tim Rawlins was on the show in episode 27 to talk about Spey Casting.
19:20 - Trout Bum was one of John's first books published. He talks about how he has always just told stories.
21:55 - Roger Angell wrote for the New Yorker and wrote the essay This Old Man - John noted how amazing Roger described the hand pistol in the essay.
27:10 - April Volkey was on the podcast in episode 30
34:00 - Ed Engle and John McPhee are two big mentors for John.
34:20 - Draft No. 4 is a great book that John says everyone should read if you are interested in writing.
33:20 - AK Best was a big mentor who helped John really get started early on. Ak's Fly Box was one of Ak's biggest books.
36:30 - A Fly Rod of Your Own is John's most recent book. John describes a little about his writing style in the podcast.
39:25 - In episode 5 Jim Teeny noted the article on throwing rocks on fish to move steelhead into place. I noted the idea of throwing spoons out to get steelhead into range for the fly fisherman to catch it. John didn't recall what I was talking about but shared another great story.
56:30 - John tells the story of when he thought he was going to die in a plane crash
1:05:30 - A cougar killed a hiker in Oregon and it's the first time ever that happened in Oregon history
1:15:00 - The Joe Rogan Podcast where the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, smoked weed on live air. I ask John if he would smoke in our episode today.
1:16:15 - The Beatles came out with the White Album partly due to a change in drug use. I ask John the same question about his writing and whether there were changes before and after.
1:18:05 - The Parachute Hare's Ear and a hares ear soft hackle behind it are his goto flies.
1:18:30 - Mary Alice Monroe tells a great story and a writer he follows along with Jim Harrison and Peter Mathison.
Conclusion with John Gierach
I hope you enjoyed that episode with John Gierach as much as I did. Did you catch the few times that I was completely surprised by John? We went down a few rabbit holes unrelated to fly fishing including weed and the 1960s.
John also covered a bunch of topics related to the 20 great fly fishing books he has written over the years. I could have gone for hours with John on this one but had to respect his time.

Sleep⊠What is it Good For?
You probably know that sleep is important, but you might not realise just how important.  While individual sleep needs vary, healthy adults should ideally be getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.  On average, Australian adults are only sleeping 7 hours per night.  This is less than ideal!  Around 33-45% of Australian adults have inadequate sleep resulting in consequences during the day.
So, what are the consequences when we arenât getting enough sleep?  Well⊠Nothing good!  Not getting enough sleep doesnât just make you feel sleepy, it has repercussions for our wellbeing in so many ways.  Lack of sleep can mess with:
Cognitive processes
Emotion regulation
Energy levels
Healthy behaviours
Immune function
Life satisfaction
Memory
Mental health
Physical health
Social relationships
Weight
The scary thing? This list is not even close to the full picture!
You might now be wondering how to tell if you are sleeping well.  The signs that youâre getting enough sleep are that you:
Sleep for long enough (somewhere in that 7â9-hour window)
Sleep (mostly) through the night
Fall asleep easily
Donât wake up too early
Feel good when you wake up: refreshed energetic and in a good mood
If these things apply to you, fantastic!  Keep up the great work.  If not, donât panic!  Iâm going to share some tips to help you sleep better.
So if youâre not sleeping as well as you could be, how can you improve your sleep?  Below are 6 tips to help you sleep better.  A word of caution, if you have chronic sleep issues these tips probably wonât help you, youâll need to see your doctor to get specialised support.
Be regular: Every day, go to sleep and wake up at the same time (yes, even weekends!).
Stay cool: Keep the bedroom around to 18°C/65°F to help you fall asleep and stay that way.
Embrace the darkness: Limit the amount of light youâre exposed to before bed and overnight. Turn off the screens, dim the lights and keep your bedroom dark.
Donât stare at the ceiling: If youâre not asleep within 20-25 minutes, get up!  Do something relaxing until you feel sleepy then try again.
Minimise coffee and alcohol: Try not to go to sleep with alcohol in your system and avoid caffeine after lunch.
Unwind: In the 30-60 minutes before bed, develop a relaxing routine to wind down before you sleep.
Back to our original question before I leave you: Sleep⊠What is it good for?  Absolutely everything!  Sleep is good for your mood, heart, blood sugar, mental functioning, immune system, stress levels and weight (again, nowhere near the full list!).  Overall, itâs good for you and your wellbeing.  Prioritising sleep really is one of the most important acts of self-care.
