Leprosy--and members cutting each other off
The analogy between classical leprosy (Hansen's Disease) and the effect of unresolved bitterness between members of the Body of Christ. Both cause members of the body to lose sensation and be vulnerable to infection and death.
Leprosy is the paradigm for ritual uncleanness throughout the Old Testament. Unclean people could not enter the community but had to live outside it. They were cut off by their uncleanness. Leviticus 13:45-46; Numbers 5:1-3. People unclean due to leprosy also could not enter the Tabernacle or Temple–except to show themselves to a priest when they believed their leprosy had been healed.…

St Damien of Molokai is a “hero” not a supremacist
St Damien of Molokai is a “hero” not a supremacist
St Damien of Molokai is a “hero” to the Hawaiian people, a Hawaiian Catholic catechist says.
Dallas Carter, a native Hawaiian says far from being a white supremicist, St. Damien learned the native language and culture and became as one with Hawaiian people.
Carter leapt to Damien’s defence after a congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezn, spoke scornfully of a statue of him.
The statue at the…

Fr. Damien and more on Molokai
Fr. Damien and more on Molokai. Today on #ADayAwayTravel. #Hawaii #travel
I found images of Father Damien on both Maui and Molokai. I love this one, complete with lei, outside of one of the churches he built on the island of Molokai.  Molokai is a land of waterfalls, black sand beaches, rainbows and green-covered mountains. And a history of Hansen’s disease. Images from my childhood continue to affect how I think about things even a half century later. That is…

Living with Hashimoto's: The Next Phase
Living with Hashimoto’s: The Next Phase
It’s hard to believe that we’re in March already. I’m thankful for that. I hate January. And, I’m not too fond of February either. The whole thing February has going for it is that it lingers around for only 28 days or so.
I just hate the winter months. I hate the winter blues. I hate the snow. So much hate. You’d almost think I’m one extra winter month away from joining the Dark Side. Thankfully…

December 2nd, 2018: In Bologna, Italy, Harry Styles donated the proceeds from the sale of his “Treat people with Kindness” hair ties to the Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO).
The Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO) is a non-governmental organization “Against leprosy and all forms of leprosy” founded in 1961 in Bologna, Italy, by a group of volunteers and Combonian missionaries inspired by Raoul Follereau’s message of love and justice.  Raoul Follereau had said “I proclaim universal heir of all the youth of the world: right, left, center, extremist; I don’t care! All youth: the one who received the gift of faith, the one who behaves like they believe, the one who thinks they do not believe. There is only one sky above us all.”

  Raoul Follereau
Raoul Follereau was born in 1903 in France and he was a journalist (he passed away in Paris in 1977). In 1936 while traveling to Africa, Follereau’s plane was forced to land due to an overheated engine. While waiting to re-board the plane, he noticed a group of people standing at the edge of the forest. They seemed scared and reluctant to join the rest of the crowd. When Follereau asked he was told that they had leprosy. That encounter changed forever Follereau’s view of the world as he realized that people with leprosy and other illnesses and disabilities are often marginalized. He thus vowed to dedicate his life to promote a message of inclusion: “To love is to live; loving is not giving but sharing”.
Leprosy, also called Hansen’s disease, is an infectious disease brought about by a bacterium that causes nerve damage and blindness. Despite the stigma attached to this disease, prominent in poor and underdeveloped countries, leprosy is not very contagious and most importantly it is very easily treated and can be even completely cured if caught early.
While Follereau’s initial focus was primarily on leprosy, even helping to fund a leprosy treatment center in Africa, his interest quickly expanded to bringing attention to the marginalization of all people affected by illness, physical and mental, and disabilities, and of the poor. Raffaele Masto in his biography of Follereau says that he was in constant “search for causes of injustice and the denunciation of the same … always had the foresight not to speak only of the disease itself, but of the ‘leprosy’, therefore of injustice, of poverty, of the unequal distribution of wealth, of the system itself.”
AIFO, which was founded on Follereau’s vision, believes that human dignity must be restored, especially for the people that are marginalized by society, and that social relations must be based on fairness and justice. AIFO also believes that individuals need to take charge of their own destiny and that they have the right to make decisions about it. This association operates in the believes that there must be great attention to the historical and cultural backdrop of the communities in which this type of work is done and that there has to be an emphasis on leveraging on the local organizations and infrastructures.
AIFO is present with its work to promote health and inclusion of all the marginalized and poor people in many countries around the world including China, Palestine, Guinea, Mozambico, and Liberia; and it does its work with particular attention to children, women and the poorest. In Italy, this organization functions primarily to educate on the global problem of marginalization and injustice and it does so through various educational programs directed at students and teachers, including summer camps, courses, and educational travels.
The work of AIFO is supported primarily by donations. AIFO has calculated that with only 130 euros someone with leprosy can be completely cured, that only 150 euros can support the training of someone with a disability and their integration into society and that only 200 euros can support a child through school. If you want to learn more about how you can help, please visit this page.
Pictures are credited to AIFO’s website and Harry Styles’ Twitter account (Helene Pumbrun’s photography).

96: August Book Club ― Moloka’i August has been dedicated to navigating through Alan Brennert’s novel, Moloka’i.  I feel personally responsible for Rachel Kalama’s life, now that I know so much about her inner thoughts as well as her outer pursuit to rise above the limitations of leprosy, formally known as Hansen’s Disease.
