1:Why make a map? Why do anything at all? Not how, because hows are easy, series or sequence, one foot after the other, but existentially why bother, what does it solve? Well, if you don’t need to, don’t. Wouldn’t that be great? Just don’t make anything. The world is full of things already, the world is vast and wide and full of grace, and you will always be given the benefit of the doubt. Except that isn’t true now, is it? Team 5Ds reading headcanons
So started thinking about what type of books certain characters would read, and this ended up extending to the rest of the cast. So here are what I've thought of:
Yusei:
Mostly reads nonfiction, such as engineering textbooks and user manuals
Martha's orphanage had a lot of old children's books that she used to teach the kids how to read, but Yusei outgrew them pretty quickly
Was hard to find good textbooks in the Satellite, so growing up, most of them were long out of date. But they helped him learn how to repair scrapped electronics
Often gravitated towards books written by "Dr. Fudo"
Sometimes reads Duel Runner magazines to stay up to date
Akiza has convinced him to try some mystery novels, but he is stupid good at figuring out the mystery halfway through
Favorite fairy tale is The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Jack:
Reads newspapers and dueling magazines, usually with his morning coffee
Looks for articles about himself or written by Carly first
Is very up to date on politics
Growing up, he was the designated storyteller whenever Martha was busy. Yusei was a better reader, but Jack was better at setting the mood and doing the voices
Favorite fairy tale is Jack and the Beanstalk
Akiza:
Was a lonely kid, so read a lot
Reads a bit of everything, but her favorites are mystery novels, poetry, and fashion magazines -Prefers romance as a side plot rather than the main genre
Convinced the group to watch a movie adaptation of a murder mystery she'd read, then Yusei points out an inaccuracy in the train design and Akiza nearly combusts because he was very close to spoiling the twist that exposes the murderer
Sometimes writes poetry, but always burns the notebook when it's filled
Favorite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast
Crow:
Canonically learned to read from Duel Monsters cards, Martha made sure he caught up when she adopted him
Reads more to his kids than for himself
Has a library card and uses it purely to get requested books for his kids
Sometimes reads comics and graphic novels, but more for the art than story
If he went to school, he'd be the type of kid that watched the movie to write a book report
Favorite fairy tale is The Ugly Duckling
Luna:
Is a big reader, spent a lot of time in hospitals or on bed rest so picked it up
Main genres are fantasy, fairy tales, and folk tales -Likes anything that involves dragons, fae, or witches the most
Also sometimes reads ecology books; knows a lot of obscure insect facts
Her and Leo have library cards and go once a week
Has gotten in trouble for reading in class
Favorite fairy tale is between Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel
Leo:
Reads almost exclusively comic books and manga (but would be a Percy Jackson kid if it existed) -Favorites are the Elemental Heroes and Neo Spacian comics
Exchanges comics with Crow a lot
His dad would always give him the comic and puzzle pages in the newspaper
Is really good at solving the crosswords and sudoku puzzles
Has also gotten in trouble for reading during class
Collects cutouts from dueling magazines that he likes best, most are of Jack but has a mini collection of Yusei too
Favorite fairy tale is between Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Hansel and Gretel
Carly:
Used to read a lot as a kid, but has less time for it than she'd like as an adult
Mostly reads news articles and magazines, especially dueling magazines, but that's 50% for work -Looks for anything featuring Jack first
Main genre of choice is romance of any kind
Jack once read one of her romance novels while he was hiding out at her place...he regrets it
Used to write a blog for dueling news in college, but stopped when she started working
Is into bullet journaling
Favorite fairy tale is The Little Mermaid
Misty:
Actually doesn't read much fashion magazines, but studied Fashion History in college and often reads books on that
Her main genre of choice is horror, prefers psychological and gothic horror -Listens to audiobooks on long plane rides
Also reads a lot of cooking and baking books, likes trying out new recipes
Used to be an avid follower of Carly's blog
Very sporadic taste
Favorite fairy tale is Swan Lake, her family used to watch the ballet every Christmas
Kalin:
Is not picky, reads out of boredom so will read literally anything that comes his way -Likes educational books the most
Books in Satellite often got burned for warmth, so not a lot of options available
He would dig through the dump for things to sell as a kid, but books weren't worth much so he'd just keep the intact ones
Read a french language textbook once and now can read in fluent french, but his pronunciation is terrible because he's rarely heard it spoken
Would eventually start a library in Crash Town
Doesn't have a favorite fairy tale (it's Cinderella)
Greiger:
Reads a lot of mythology and folk tales
Started with telling the tales to his younger siblings and younger kids in his village, eventually got interested in the mythology of other cultures as well
Got really interested in Egyptian mythology and Duel Monsters' origins in it
Likes Inca mythology the most (because it's what he grew up on), but couldn't pick a favorite tale if he tried

@yurikalonesome Ceph if he was a school teacher I guess lol
“Good evening! Has everyone been enjoying the party?” she asked as Mrs Alina translated her words, eliciting a cheer from the crowd. “Good!” Lady Allard called, clasping her hands together. “Now as many of you might not know, it’s a tradition in Ischanian culture, that before the start of each celebration, there must be a story! Do we have any volunteers?”
A low murmur passed through the crowd as several people exchanged glances.
“Anyone?” Lady Allard asked.
“I volunteer-,” came a voice from beside her as silence fell over the crowd and several pairs of heads turned, searching for the source of the voice seated next to Asha.
“Cepheus?” she stammered, as the smiling star examined the silver-colored trees he’d sewn into the cape. “You’re going to tell a story?”
“This I’ve got to hear,” her grandfather grumbled as he seated himself a few feet away.
“Hey, aren’t you Asha’s acquaintance?” Edda asked as the children began to gather around.
“No Edda,” Asha cleared her throat as she shut her father’s journal. “Cepheus is a friend.”
“Friend?” Edda repeated before suspiciously squinting at her. “That’s not what you said last time-,”
“What kind of story are you gonna tell us?” Thatcher interrupted, which promptly earned him a glare from Eda. “It's not some lovey-dovey fairy tale with kissing is it?”
Cepheus shook his head, laughing “No, it’s just an old nursery tale that takes place in a forest.”
“Are there any unicorns there?” Phoebe shyly asked as she held her doll close.
The star smiled, “I don’t see why not, after all, it is a magical forest!”
“A magical forest?” Diego asked, looking somewhat interested.
“Yes, and it begins like all good tales do, with a child in this forest. Now no one is quite sure of the circumstances that brought this little boy to the forest. But what they did know was that he’d lived in it for as long as he could, teaching himself to survive and terrorize all those who came across him -,”
“Was he a prince?” Eda interrupted.
“I- excuse me?!” the star stopped this time looking mildly offended.
“I asked if he was a prince,” repeated Eda as if she hadn’t been speaking to a being that could easily erase her existence. “Most people don’t just leave their children in the middle of the forest if they’re not some kind of royalty.”
“Hansel and Gretel would like to have a word with you-,” Asha interjected as Eda scowled.
“She’s right,” Cepheus nodded. “You don’t have to be royalty to be stranded in the woods. And as such, for the sake of my story, our main character is not royalty.” The choir of groans that followed from the children was nearly astounding as the star’s eyes widened. “Goodness, the classism is strong with all of you. Why must the protagonist be royalty?”
“Because the royals are always the ones who get the cool powers and adventures!” Kelsie excitedly exclaimed.
“Just like the king!” Diego added as a choir of agreement arose from the crowd.
“Yeah!” Thatcher nodded. “How else do you think he got to slaughter all of those sta-,”
“Thatcher!” Asha and her grandfather scolded in unison. She’d glanced at her grandfather, partially shocked at his interjection before the crowd’s murmurs began to increase in volume once more.
Nervously she’d glanced at the star, doing her best to gauge his reaction. She’d expected swift retribution, or worse, but to her relief, neither was apparent on the star’s face.
His lips had been pressed into a thin line as he placed his sewing needles down and blankly stared. There’d been nothing particularly threatening or emotional about his stare, but it had been enough to make everyone excluding her grandfather shift uncomfortably. “May I continue?” he asked quietly as the children nodded. “Thank you.”

Adventure Journal #218 (cont. 🎵 ) So that's the end of the tour I guess. Sorry to cut it short! But wait until I tell you about the time Daddy went to Tomarang and fought all those bugs! He says they were computer bugs but they sound massive! How would they even fit in a computer?
I looked it up in my encyclopedias and it said that there were Tigers there! But apparently they live in a rabbit hole. I don't think that sounds very safe for the rabbits, but maybe they get along?
And when I visit one day, I'm gonna go see one! Maybe even two if I'm lucky.
Do you think there are any tigers in Sulani? I mean I haven't seen any but that doesn't mean they might not be out there.
HANSEL found my tooth and we put it under the pillow for the Tooth Beary. Dad says next time we should work together to set up a trap for him to steal his tooth gold.
I tried to stay up and wait for him but I accidentally fell asleep.
Adventure Journal #218 - Documenpeer Sunny Helianthus Plott signing off.

✧.*Are You Listening?*.✧
~Ehehehe the brain maggots won and I can’t say I’m upset by it (^⩌^). I’ve binged this show enough times to be put into all kinds of moods by these men, so I might as well write out my feelings. This is set right after S1 Ep. 7, so if you haven’t watched up to there, expect some spoilers! For anyone else who has pirate-based thought goblins, I hope you Enjoy!~
Lee: Edward
Ler: Stede
Summary: Stede goes on a small rant about what happened on their latest adventure, though Edward isn’t fully listening. When he notices this, he calls the man out, but is met with a rather fascinating reaction.
Warnings: mild Our Flag Means Death spoilers! This is a tickle fic, so if you don’t like that, scroll away!!
Bobbing with the current, the Revenge drifted peacefully through the sea. Most of the crew was on-deck, chatting and messing around in their moment of peace. However, in the captain’s quarters, two men relaxed, one info-dumping while the other thumbed through random numbers of Stede’s vast collection of novels.
“And did you see that bird’s nest? They had to be Snowy Plovers, no question. Oh, I wish Lucius had brought his sketching journal.” Stede sighed dreamily, slowly pacing around the room as he spoke.
Ed hummed, not looking up from the copy of Hansel and Grettle. Stede had allowed him to browse whatever he wanted in the library, though he rarely read anything cover-to-cover. The blonde man continued, not yet noticing his companion’s lack of attention.
“There were so many interesting creatures on that island! I mean, the orange was the real treasure in it all, but I do so enjoy exploring nature when we travel.” Turning on his heel, he spun to face the bearded man once again. “What do you think, Ed?”
“Uh-huh, yeah. Good, uh, land and shit,” Edward half-heartedly replied, flipping a few more pages into the book. That’s when Stede finally noticed that he wasn’t really listening.
“Edward!” The pirate jolted, shutting the book and actually meeting Stede’s eyes. “You weren’t even listening to me, were you?” Stede huffed, crossing his arms with an almost adorable pout.
“Uh…kinda? I mean, I heard the bit about the birds…” Ed mumbled most of his response, looking away. Yeah, he’d only heard a few words of the other man’s spiel. “Fuckin’, uh…book was distracting.”
With a huff, Stede sat down beside him, picking up the book. “I’m glad you’re interested in literature, but I was talking. It’s a bit rude to ignore people, isn’t it?” While he was a bit annoyed, Stede’s tone was a joking one. He even poked the man’s ribs in a playful manner, though he hadn’t expected Ed’s flinch.
“Damn, did I hurt you?” Stede sounded worried, a profanity even slipping in. He was more panicked than a normal friend should’ve been, though neither commented on it.
“No, didn’t hurt. Takes more than a fuckin’ finger to hurt me.” Ed swatted Stede’s hand away, his beard hiding the very slight blush on his cheeks. He hadn’t felt a touch like that since…well, it’d certainly been a while. “Just felt…I dunno, fuckin’ weird.”
“Weird?” Stede spoke softly, his worry melding into confusion. What could possibly feel weird to Blackbeard? He’d only lightly poked the man, and his ribs aren’t…oh. Oh. It took everything Stede had to keep a straight face as he said his next words.
“Might your ribs be a bit sensitive, Ed?”
Edward nearly did a double-take at the words and his tone, snapping his head in the other man’s direction. “Sensitive? I’m…I’m fuckin’ Blackbeard. Sensitivity doesn’t apply to me.”
Stede rolled his eyes. Yeah right… Stifling a smirk, the blonde slowly slid his hand towards Ed’s side. Before he could do anything, though, a rough hand snatched his wrist. Edward’s eyes met his, full of some unreadable emotion.
“Don’t. Don’t you fuckin’ dare, Bonnet.” His tone was gruff and dark, though the emotion in his eyes gained some depth. It was almost…giddy? The word felt foreign when describing Ed, though it fit to a tee.
“Hmmm…I think I fucking do.” Using his other hand, he squeezed Edward’s side. The feeling was such a shock that a damned giggle left the dread pirate’s mouth, his arms moving to clamp to his sides.
That sound made Stede’s stomach fill with a strange fluttering feeling—one he often felt around Edward. He decided to pursue it, scooting closer and wiggling his fingers into Ed’s stomach.
The feeling wasn’t that intense through his layers of clothing, but it definitely still tickled. Biting his lip, Ed squirmed, trying to shove at Stede’s hands while still protecting himself. It should be noted, however, that he didn’t put up much of a real fight.
“My, Edward. I think someone’s a bit ticklish…” Stede chuckled, trying to slip his fingers under Ed’s arms. He’d had a small taste of the other man’s laughter, and had become hooked, He had to hear more. “I think it’d feel a bit nicer if you let out that laughter, Ed. Don’t you?”
When the eccentric man managed to wedge his fingers up to Ed’s ribs, the pirate knew he was done for. The dam broke, surprisingly bright giggles filling the quarters. They were still gruff, of course—still, the happy air was hard to ignore.
“Oh dear. I think someone’s got a case of the giggles~” Stede cooed, one hand wiggling on the man’s ribs as the other poked and spidered on his belly. Was he pushing his luck? Oh, absolutely. It was, however, well worth it to see Ed’s silly smile.
“F-fuhuhuck- Stehehede! Fuhuck ohohoff!” Twisting and wriggling around, Ed hid his face in his shoulder. The bearded man’s heavy boots skidded on the wooden floor, leaving small scuffs. Stede would deal with that later.
The feeling was…well, it wasn’t awful for Edward. He would never let the crew see him like that, of course; he had a reputation to maintain. With Stede, however, it felt nice to laugh. To let a few of his walls down without the fear of the mental rubble coming back to crush him. He wasn’t going to admit any of that, but it was true: his blush, however, was a different story.
“Well, I would, but I think I can see some pink underneath that salt and pepper of yours. Are you blushing, Eddy?” Stede used a slight nickname, his tone incredibly playful and teasing. He was determined to keep Ed giggling for as long as possible.
“Screhehew youhu!” Edward tried arching his back, but that only freed his ribs up more. Slipping his fingers beneath Ed’s leather, Stede wiggled his fingers against the thinner fabric of his undershirt. That got quite the reaction.
“GRK- FAHAHAHAHA! FUHUHUCK YOUHUHUHU!” Ed’s bright giggles ramped up to loud, raucous laughter. A few snorts worked their way in, making Stede’s heart melt. Oh, how he loved that sound…
“I must say, this is a fine symphony. I’m loving all the onomatopoeias, and your laugh is so melodic!” Wanting to be a bit more mean, Stede hummed a lovely tune by Bach, pretending that his fellow seamen’s ribs and belly were piano keys. “I just love tickling the ivories, don’t you?”
The bearded man couldn’t respond, too lost in laughter to form a coherent sentence. While it was nice to laugh his cares away, he was starting to wear out. His throat was drying up, and his sides were starting to ache. He patted Stede’s wrist, managing to speak through his amusing cackles. “S-STAHAHAP! STEHEHEDE!”
Immediately, Stede pulled away, sensing Ed’s weariness. He didn’t want to push too much. “Goodness, Ed, I-I’m sorry. I got a bit carried away. Are you alright?”
Closing his eyes, Edward took a few deep and giggly breaths. He was certainly tired, but not to an uncomfortable degree. “Qu-quit worryin’... Takes mohore than a little laugh to knohock Blackbeard down.” The red hue on his cheeks slowly subsided, his giggles drying up. Ed recovered pretty quickly.
“Good, good,” Stede sighed, smiling softly. Finally noticing that his hands were still on Edward, he scooted away, blushing. Ed cut him off before he could make a fool of himself.
“Ya know, it’s been a while since anyone’s had the balls to do somethin’ like that to me. Good on ya, Stede.” He clapped the blonde on the shoulder, though didn’t let go after. Instead, he flipped their positions, swiftly pinning Stede to the couch and nearly straddling him.
Ed made quick work of Stede’s resistance, even though there was hardly any to deal with. “There’s a reason for that, though. Wanna guess why?” He pinned the flamboyant man’s arms above his head without any hesitation. Stede couldn’t help the squeaky giggles that bubbled out of him, already squirming. He shook his head. Edward leaned down and whispered in his ear, scraggly beard hair tickling the poor man’s neck. He was in for a long evening...
“I always get my revenge~”

Hi! This is kind of random but I saw the post about your What Is Evil class and was wondering if you have any recorded lectures or the reading list? I just think it would be an interesting thing to read about and I'm nerdy like that lol 😅 no worries if not!
You know, you are the second person to ask me for this list. And I am always happy to help out a fellow nerd. Sadly, there are no recording I know of for this course but I do have the readings.
Our main book was Being Evil: A Philosophical Perspective by Luke Russell which I found to be a really good starting place for the discussion of what is Evil. I will add the rest of the readings under a read more split cause the list is long. Here it goes:
-Brothers Grimm: Hansel and Gretel; How Some Children Played at Slaughtering; The Little Red Cap; Little Snow White; Bluebeard; The Crows
-Richard Bernstein, The Abuse of Evil, pp. 53-67
-Malcom Gladwell, “Sacred and Profane,” The New Yorker: March 24, 2014
-Daniel K. Williams, Defenders of the Unborn, pp. 1-9
-Livy on the Bacchanalian conspiracy
-Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, 1986
-Genesis, 1-3
-“An Irenaean Theodicy,” in In: Badham P. (ed) A John Hick Reader. Palgrave Macmillan, London, 1990
-Stephen de Wijze, “Insights from the Problem of ‘Dirty Hands’,” The Monist 85.2 (2002) 210-38
-Thucydides, "Melian dialogue" and "Civil strife on Corcyra"
-Euripides, Trojan Women
-Seneca, Thyestes, tr. Emily Wilson in Seneca: Six Tragedies, Oxford: 2010
-Euripides, Medea, tr. C.A.E. Luschnig
-Erich Fromm, “The Present Human Condition,” The American Scholar 25, no. 1 (1955): 29-35.
-Sophocles, Philoctetes, tr. David Grene, Complete Greek Tragedies, Chicago: 1957
-Selections from Hannah Arendt, “Eichmann in Jerusalem” The New Yorker, February 9, 1963
-Hannah Pitkin, “Relativism, a lecture,” Journal of Social Philosophy, 1994, 25:176-87
-Paul Elie, “What do the Church’s Victims Deserve?” The New Yorker, April 8, 2019
Those are the all readings on our syllabus (minus the ones that were selections that he put together and gave to us that I can't find). You can find copies of most of these as PDFs on various site or copies of the books at your local library. Most the these are Classics-based (aka Ancient Greek and Roman) since it was a course in our Classics and World Religions department. Please let me know if you have any more questions about the readings or any other such topics. Especially the classics based ones, it's what I have my degree in and I'm always happy to talk about them and their contexts. Sharing knowledge is my favorite thing to do. I hope you enjoy your evil reading!
