Headcanons for J’s parents
Mariabella Rosales
She’s around the same age as the residents of Class 79, meaning she was old enough to have seen and lived through The Tragedy.
Even at a young age, she was a prominent actress. She appeared in ads and commercials before getting a serious start in shows and, eventually movies.
She developed a rivalry with fellow actress Emma Magorobi over the latter getting the role of Holly Queen, which Mariabella felt she deserved.
As a teenager, I imagine- personality and appearance-wise- she’s similar to Mika from Persona 5.
She’s the epitome of a spoiled actress, especially as she rose to become a movie star. Numerous people have said she’s very hard to work with, but she’s so good at what she rarely gets called out on it.
Mariabella also has no problem dragging her kids into publicity schemes, signing them up for things against their will or dragging them out into public, and guilt-tripping the hell out of them for not going along with it.
She’s incredibly vain and performative, and often uses her looks or her status to get what she wants. This was a view she tried to extend to J, dressing her up and everything, which only made her despise “girly things” in general.
Hank Moreno
Physically, I imagine he’s a big dude and looks kinda like Charlie from Twilight, but with a bit more facial hair.
Hank came from a fairly poor family, but he managed to get through high school, where he found he really excelled in theater. He was so successful that he decided to pursue a producing movies.
It was on one of his projects that he met Mariabella, who’d recently risen to prominence, and who he really took a liking to. The two of them started dating shortly afterward, which the press was quick to follow. They were all over the headlines when they announced their engagement.
Hank didn’t really know how to be a dad at first, so when J and Ryan were born, he had a fairly awkward relationship with them, since Mariabella was a lot more interested in it. Still, he tried to be a good to them however he could.
As J got older, and grew increasingly sick of her mother, she gravitated more toward her father and his work. He was happy to teach her everything he knew, and she found she really enjoyed her father’s company more, especially since he wasn’t dictating her life.
As a teenager, around the same time J admitted she wanted to cut ties with her mother, Hank could see how negatively all of this was affecting her and decided to talk to Mariabella about it. While the public doesn’t know it, the two of them separated shortly afterward.
Whenever they come over, Hank has tried using other pronouns at J’s request, which he’s not the best at, but he’s trying to do whatever makes J comfortable. No matter who J wants to be, he promised he’d always support their decisions.
J’s hoodie was a gift from him.

dunno if this was confirmed or not but do you know where j gets the "moreno" part in her name? i always wondered if it had any sort of deeper meaning or if she made it so starkly different from her birth-given last name to distance herself from her past
she took it from her dad! hank moreno

top 9 reads of the final quarter!! Tagged by @librarycards
I've had a weird as hell reading year and would not have guessed a light novel, a romcom, and notes app poetry would end up being so important to me but. Here we are! this year has been dedicated to me realizing how much i love genres i used to think i hated.
Starling House by Alix E Harrow - gothic fantasy with a strong romance subplot about belonging and small town life and trauma, it did everything i wanted and more and made me care so much that i got mad at special edition art being inaccurate. He would not fucking wear that....
Pretty Boys are Poisonous by Megan Fox - she treated notes app poetry as a genre and it resonated with me idk man i get her!
Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan - i will read anything rick writes and most of the time i love it, this is the first time we've gotten to see low stakes questing and i LOVED it
The Poppy War trilogy - i read all 3 of the books in the same month and love them all so bad, i just downloaded the burning god to represent the series. brilliant historical fantasy
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green - very voicey scifi but it landed so well for me, especially the main characters arc around self image and how she treats others
The Glow by Jessie Gaynor - one of those very very very slightly weird contemporary litfic about the wellness industry books which is one of my favorite subgenres, reads like a loving satire of the victims of That Girl mentality
Chainsaw Man Buddy Stories - does the cast of chainsaw man know how i love them. the last story made me cry like a little baby
Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Parker - i mean it's a sapphic romcom, with believable characters and chemistry and character arcs i really enjoyed. the other two books aren't really good at all i had to dnf the third but this first one!
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - smg always hits right and this was no exception, the world building of the weird sort of scifi was amazing, and i loved the way indigenous liberation and colonization weave in seamlessly to the plot, i have some minor qualms but overall it stuck with me and i really loved the writing and characters

Finlay Friday
12x21: "Dune and Gloom", script extracts. Meta under the cut.
Thoughts here instead of the tags because I ran on even by my own standards.
There isn't a lot of Finn in this episode, but the changes between the script and aired version are interesting to me!!
The first two gifs are cut dialogue over the scene as-aired, which is all science. The brother reference threw me because I’m sure the only time he's mentioned on-air is in "The Last Ride", right at the end of the run. But 16yo Finn somehow both trying to impress and briefly unaware she's being hit on by her older brother's friends is v cute???
The dialogue with Moreno only changes slightly, from “My place sounds good to me. […] You make the breakfast this time”, to “Okay, so we'll do it at your place tonight, and um, I'll call you if I'm going to be late”. It’s only a subtle shift, and the tone is still outrageously flirtatious, but it’s a degree less personal/more transactional, and I feel like it helps in establishing the nature of the relationship. We know from “Homecoming” that Finn is in a ‘sneaking-out-in-the-middle-of-the-night’, “it’s so much hotter when you don’t talk” place when it comes to relationships, and I just don't see her—at this point, anyway—as willingly inviting someone into her space and making them breakfast in the morning.
AND THEN THE HENRY SCENE. The difference here is:
Aired:
Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror". That dragon movie. You know it's not in theatres anymore, and I'm pretty sure it didn't come out on DVD because I wanted to see that. Henry: Wait, you-you like fantasy movies? Finn: Yeah! I saw Lord of the Rings like forty times. Henry: That's awesome.
Script:
Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror"? Cheesy fantasy movie, right? Not in theaters anymore. Not on DVD yet. (OFF Henry, admits) Guy I'm seeing digs dragons. And I dig him.
The whole tone is different, shifting from a reluctant admission that she's researched lame movies for a guy she's into, to genuine enthusiasm for something she's passionate and unashamed about. Love that for her!!
Finn being a fantasy nerd has been part of my understanding of who she is for so long, that to see that was originally written as 'liking Moreno so much she'll research dragon movies for him' FELT WRONG. It's only a few lines but it's such a cute scene and I'm very glad they changed it, for two reasons really. One being that Finn and Henry are adorable in s12??? This woman only moves to Vegas after 12x14, and by 12x20, she's spent every night for two weeks at the batting cages with Henry, helping him practice his swing. I ADORE HER. There's also a very sweet cut scripted scene in 12x15 that goes:
Henry: So you go by "Finn"? Finn: Yup. You go by "Hank"? Henry: No. But… (thinks about this). "Hank Andrews, DNA". I like that. […] Finn: Find me when you have a profile, Hank.
THEY'RE JUST CUTE OKAY. So yeah. In the aired version she's seen Lord of the Rings like 40 times, and Henry thinks that's awesome, AND SO DO I.
(Also, I think it just feeds in so much to Finn being a people-pleaser. She gives people these little parts of herself that appeal most to them, so with Henry she loves fantasy movies, with Super Dave it's like START THE ELITE CHEF GROUP CHAT RN, and with Sara she loves crossword puzzles!! And those are all true things, they're not invented for her audience, but they're also not all of her. Because it takes time and/or being Russell to get the Full Julie Finlay Experience.)
Anyway I've spent longer thinking about THREE MINOR SCRIPT CHANGES than Lisa spent filming her scenes for this episode, so that's super chill.

Beau Geste - Episode Six (5 December 1982)
The action is really kicking in now we're on the sixth episode of Beau Geste, an adaptation of the French Foreign Legion story written by P.C. Wren.
The Legion has been sent to Fort Zinderneuf as part of the response to the tribal uprising in Sudan. The march through the Sahara is difficult and starts affecting the men, most notably Maris (John Moreno) who it quickly becomes clear is not cut out for Legion life, complaining to the Geste brothers he feels like he's losing his mind and then losing his nerve when the Legion comes under attack by hostile tribesmen. A tragic fate is in store for him and he won't be the only one...
Arriving at Fort Zinderneuf, the brutal Sergeant Major Lejaune (John Forgeham) increasingly asserts control from the ineffective commanding officer Captain Renouf (Damien Thomas) who is also struggling to cope and has turned to drink. When Maris deserts from the fort, his death sentence is effectively sealed as he will either die from thirst in the desert, be killed by the revolting tribes or if he's returned to the fort Lejaune promises him a fate worse than death.
Lejaune also remains determined to make life miserable for the Geste brothers and their American friends Buddy (Barry Dennen) and Hank (Christopher Malcolm) and his decision to promote Boldini (Stefan Gryff) to corporal ends up being an unpopular one...
Another very good episode with John Forgeham once again impressing as Sergeant Major Lejaune, a truly intimidating and brutal presence and the intrigue at the fort helps make the episode even more interesting. There is also a well-played and surprising tragic conclusion to the episode.
Although overall very engaging, there are a couple of minor flaws that means this episode does fall slightly below the excellent standard set by the fourth and fifth episodes.
For starters, the Geste brothers and Boldini are mostly relegated to the background during the episode. As the main characters, the Geste brothers should have had more to do and it's a shame Boldini does not do as much in this episode as Stefan Gryff's performance as the slimy, dishonest Italian had been a highlight of the previous 3 episodes.
Also the skirmish against the tribesmen in the desert is rather underwhelming and unexciting, suggesting that battle scenes are not the strength of this production.
But the real strengths of this show lie in it's excellent characters and intriguing plotting, I await eagerly the final 2 episodes of this excellent show which will soon be broadcast by Talking Pictures TV.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Viswanathan Anand, Hector Berlioz, Grigoris Bithikotsis, Betsy Blair, Justin Currie (Del Amitri), Mos Def, Gary Dourdan, music curator & record store hero Greg Entz, Teri Garr, David Gates, Jermaine Jackson, Darryl Jones, John Kerry, Robert Koch, Dilip Kumar, Brenda Lee, Rita Moreno, Rey Mysterio, Carlo Ponti, Rachel Portman, Pérez Prado, Gilbert Roland, Nikki Sixx, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Hailee Steinfeld, Rider Strong, Hank Thompson & His Brazos Valley Boys’s 1952 single “The Wild Side of Life,” Big Mama Thornton, McCoy Tyner, Marie Windsor, and Carlos Gardel, the French-Argentine singer-songwriter/actor and legend of tango music. Together with lyricist-collaborator Alfred le Pera, Gardel wrote many classic tangos and was one of the most influential world music interpreters of the 20th Century. In 1935 he died in an airplane crash at the height of his career, becoming an archetypal tragic hero mourned throughout Latin America—where he is still esteemed in the same way Anglos regard John Lennon and Elvis Presley. Gardel was nicknamed "Carlitos", "El Zorzal" ("The Song Thrush”), "The King of Tango", "El Mago" (The Wizard), and other sobriquets, and he was saluted for his dramatic phrasing of lyrics. https://www.historytoday.com/archive/tango-made-flesh-carlos-gardel My tango-glam rock song “Love That’s Here to Stay” was partially inspired by Gardel. Even though he was a baritone and I’m a tenor, I hope I paid proper tribute to his neo-operatic vocal style in the last chorus. RIP Carlos, and it feels like you’re still singing in the sky...
