I don't think Hiccup can actually fully understand dragons (they don't really have a clear, learnable language. mainly communication through a range of sounds and body language), but his familiarity with Toothless' noises and mannerisms, and Hiccup's habit of mimicking them, has helped him understand the gist of what most dragons are trying to communicate and he often responds in kind. Sometimes he doesn't even realize when he's doing it and wonders why people are giving him such strange looks.

sometimes i like to think that if RoB/DoB and RTTE Hiccup met each other, they would both be a little unsettled by each other - younger Hiccup would be like "geez, I get really reckless, huh?" and probably roast his older self about it. Older Hiccup would be like "why is younger me so mean? ;-;"
just imagining young Hiccup watching older Hiccup jump off a cliff wearing clearly too-heavy wings and making some sardonic comment and older Hiccup being like "now listen here, you little shit!"
Funnily enough I kind of feel like RoB/DoB Hiccup and RTTE are like two sides of HTTYD 1 Hiccup's personality divided in half.
Also, I think it would be very funny to see different HTTYD characters react to their younger selves. I feel like Astrid especially would see her younger self and be shocked. Like "I wasn't that angry all the time, was I?" Everyone else would be like...YES ASTRID
Dagur would see his younger self and probably be partially embarrassed/ashamed about the villainy and partially overwhelmed by how much of a gremlin he was. Like if he found Gustav tiring, imagine how he'd react to his teenage self.

Tumblr media
sorry hiccup, ur friends are functioning stoners
if u are wondering abt tuff & fishlegs:
Tumblr media
actual thought out headcanons happy 4/20 lol
fishlegs: partakes but isn't a stoner. makes sure everyone stays hydrated & can tell u all abt the different kinds of marijuana plants (there's literally over 700 strains). likes making edibles with ruffnut using the stuff he grows. very serious abt everyone taking care of themselves tho, fr. has a pretty good tolerance to it. very giggly
tuffnut: ik it says "does not partake" but he will on occassion if it's like. blunt rotation in hiccup's garage lmao. one puff & he's done. it caused him an asthma attack in the past & after that he said no to constantly doing it. edibles make him way too paranoid & he feels like his skin is pinching/prickling itself & it's itchy. will help with giving ppl water & likes making normal snacks for everyone when they get munchies.
hiccup: only partakes on special occassions or if there's absolutely nothing going on during a weekend. isn't the biggest fan of how it makes him feel. prefers smoking. one time he accidentally ate a whole brownie & he was on the couch, curled up, and riding it out as fishlegs did his best to keep him calm.
astrid: "astrid's been eating dragon nip again" yea she has she's been eating edibles since she was 15 lol all that stress of being perfect she put on herself takes a toll & it helps her unwind. high tolerance. does smoke, too. stoner, but like, no one can tell & originally only ruffnut knew. a fucking Pro & still knows when she can't do it (like when she's driving)
ruffnut: does it bc it's fun silly time!! prefers to smoke & has a bong collection lol. her & astrid are the original stoners of the gang. they got into it together & it's weirdly smth that they hold dear despite not being super duper close. sometimes her & astrid will separate themselves & have a smoke together & just sit. it's nice.
snotlout: he always overdoes it to the point where he'll probably throw up but after he does he's fine & feels great. always chokes & hacks up a storm when he smokes & forgets to drink water. he has hallucinated from brownies ruff made before. gets super twitchy. has ended up in cannabis induced psychosis multiple times & never learns his lesson abt his limits

Is Snotlout Really Hiccup's Cousin? (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Today, I have another Snotlout article after a long while. We will dive into this simple question:
Are Snotlout and Hiccup REALLY cousins in the Film Franchise?
The short answer is: NO, they're not.
But you're obviously here for the LONG answer, so let me list several reasons why they are not cousins in the film franchise:
One: in the Books, they were paternal cousins, and they don't even have the same surname in the films.
Two: they have never called each other cousins ONCE in the entire franchise. Not even once.
Three: DeBlois and the HTTYD Team, nor the actors, have ever mentioned, hinted, implied, stated, revealed, or proved that they were cousins.
Four: in the movie franchise, they have an enemies-to-friends relationship, rather than a familial one.
Five: If they were related by ANY stretch of the imagination, Snotlout would've competed for the title of Heir like in the Books, but he doesn't. He's simply pressured by Spitelout, his father, to best Hiccup so that his father can one-up Stoick (and so that he can fulfill his father's warped expectations of what a Jorgenson is).
Six: Snotlout is better at everything than Hiccup in the Books (aside from speaking Dragonese and is even at sword-fighting once Hiccup uses his left hand), while Hiccup trounces Snotlout in several things.
So yeah, they're not cousins. Of course, if I somehow missed something, please inform me if I am incorrect.
Tumblr media
Of course, this doesn't stop people from automatically labeling him as Hiccup's cousin, simply because he was in the Books, and it's just easier to implement it in the story.
Heck, I've seen plenty of people who have them be maternal cousins instead of paternal cousins, hence the different surnames. Though bear in mind that, historically, Vikings were named by who their parents were (i.e. Ragnar Ragnarsson, Thor Bjarnson, Asgeirrsdottir, and in rare cases maternal names like Astridsson/Astridsdottir).
My Headcanon
Personally, though, I'm of the opinion that Book Snotlout and Movie Snotlout are two different characters despite their similarities.
As such, I have Snotlout and Hiccup be just good friends.
Snotlout got his name from Snotface Snotlout Haddock's middle name since Spitelout wanted Snotlout to be just like Snotface, whom he thought would replace Hiccup as the Heir. Snotlout admires him for being like the Great Viking Heroes and follows him and wants to be like him whenever he can. He often has to decide whether to follow Snotface or Hiccup — especially after Hiccup defeats the Red Death. And as time passes, it gets harder for him to choose.
Until one day, Snotlout decides to be his own man, without being influenced or pressured by his father or by Snotface, or even by Hiccup. He will stand on his own to feet and learn what path he wants to take and what man he wants to become.
See? EXCELLENT character development, if I do say so myself! 😁
What do you guys think? How do you view Hiccup and Snotlout's relationship, and how do you implement it in your headcanon?
Thank you for reading.
Long Live the Night!

Weak: "There are other dragon riders?" is just a continuity error
Strong: "There are other dragon riders?" refers to the fact that Hiccup has never seen this kind of dragon attack before, so what he's actually thinking is "There are other dragon riders besides the ones we know of?"
Godly: "There are other dragon riders?" is Hiccup expressing interest in knowing who these mystery riders are while pretending like he doesn't know who Heather, Dagur, the Wingmaidens etc are (aka the first time Hiccup has ever convincingly lied to someone without someone else backing him up) in order to protect them because he recognises that Eret sells and profits from the dragon trade just like Viggo did, and he's thinking something reminiscent of that one line in RttE about "Eventually, he will set his sights on Berk, and on our dragons" in reference to Viggo, and about how if Eret knew about the other Riders he would absolutely go after them because that's exactly what Viggo did

@duoatomica @ziggityzigg @amyrafiercebladeartz >:)
anyways yes hello. To further elaborate on some of these:
Viggo’s middle name is Maurice. (Idk why I’ve had it for like forever but it sounds nice)
The entirety of Krogan’s latter half of his name is entirely my headcanon lmao. If he was actually within his culture everyone in the show would be referring to him as Aéros instead of Krogan. Krogan (Krogæn’Tan) is ONLY allowed to be used by Krogan’s immediate family. (Signifigant other, parents, siblings, etc)
Dagur’s last name is Oswaldsson. I did not write that down because there was no room for his shit chicken scratch.
Ryker’s middle name is Hrøthgær.

Is Heather Based on a Book Character? (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Today, we'll be talking about another character from the movie/TV franchise and the Books:
Could Heather be loosely based on a character from the books?
(Warning: Spoiler Alert to those who haven't read the books at all, but consider this an opportunity to see if the books are worth reading, eh? ;-) )
Now, I might be 100% wrong on my theory, but I'm still going to present it, and leave to you, my audience, to determine whether or not this is plausible.
Unlike other characters in the movie/t.v. show whom many fans think are similar to certain book characters (cough, cough, Astrid, cough), Heather might possibly have more in common with her other half, Barbara the Barbarian: a minor character that we see only in the last book of the series, How to Fight a Dragon's Fury.
<><><><><><><><><><><>
My Theory | How Heather and Barbara Are Similar:
What makes me think that Heather and Barbara are connected, if somewhat loosely?
Well, let me give you a few reasons:
1) She's a daughter of a Chieftain.
Both girls are daughters (or Princesses, as they're called in the books) of Chieftains — albeit Heather's the daughter of the late Chieftain of the Berserker Tribe, while Barbara is the daughter of the Chieftain of the Barbarian Tribe. They both have a level head on their shoulders and their equipment and even their dragons look somewhat similar, if loosely so.
They are also good leaders who lead their warriors well, and both of their fathers dote on them.
Both are superb fighters, being daughters of Chieftains. They are also intelligent, fierce, brave, kind, compassionate, and love their dragons dearly.
Tumblr media
2) Both seem to be brunettes (though Barbara's hair and eye color is never mentioned).
3) Barbara, like Heather, seems to not have a mother, though it's unclear whether the mother died or if she was just not mentioned. The HTTYD books only have a few mothers who are mentioned and shown: Bertha (Camicazi's mother), Valhallarama (Hiccup's mother), Termagant (Fishlegs' mother), Excellinor the Witch (Alvin the Treacherous's mother), and Chin-hilda (Hiccup the Second's mother). Oddly, women are sorely lacking in the books. Maybe it's just because of the Viking culture in her books. In Viking culture, women weren't often mentioned except in folklore and sagas.
4) Both are staunch supporters and allies of their respective Hiccup the Thirds. Heather is a trustworthy ally who's often shown alongside Hiccup and the Dragon Riders in Race to the Edge along with Dagur.
She's always seen with the others around the Hearth giving suggestions and advice. Before she reconciled with Dagur, and when she lived with the Dragon Riders, she often flew with Hiccup and/or Astrid, and was usually the one to go with Hiccup and Astrid when he left to talk to someone — whether a villain or one of their allies.
She and Barbara have the utmost respect for their respective Hiccups and would gladly die for them if need be.
Barbara only nominated Alvin the Treacherous to be King of the Wilderwest, despite knowing the kind of person he was and having fought against him, and being Hiccup's follower, out of practical sense and battle fatigue, for the Vikings of the Wilderwest were close to extinction under the claws of the Dragons' Red-Rage Rebellion led by Furious, and she and everyone else had been fighting the dragons for two years at this point and were war-weary (even Vikings need a break from war once and a while). Only when evidence began to pop up that Hiccup is the Rightful Heir did she have hope again.
She was also one of the Vikings who knelt before Hiccup to swear their swords for his service as their King. And when Hiccup was going to duel Furious, Barbara offered to lend him her cat to take into battle — whether as a weapon, a lucky charm, or both.
And when Hiccup was in danger — and when Alvin incited the battle once again by breaking the Rules of Single Combat by entering the Ring when Hiccup and Furious were engaged so that he could steal the Dragon Jewel and kill Hiccup the Third for good — she flew on her dragon along with her comrades to enter the fray and showed great courage and bravery.
5) Both Heather and Barbara own battle horns.
Tumblr media
Heather was given her horn as a gift from Hiccup's father Stoick when she was born. Perhaps Barbara did likewise, or her own father had given her it when she was older. As I've said, she's a minor character so not much is known about her at all; she's only shown in one book — the last one, and only in the middle of the last one.
Heather uses her own to call Windshear to her if they ever get separated. It's also possible that she uses it to call to any allies that are close to her. Barbara seems to use her horn similarly.
In fact, in How to Fight a Dragon's Fury, it says in Page 241 that: "...She brought out her foghorn and blew on it several times, making such a loud noise that the cat's fur stood up like the quills on a sea urchin and she immediately bounced back onto Barbara's shoulder."
So she seems to use it for her pet cat (I believe it was mentioned that the Barbarian Tribe used cats into battle. No clue why, but they do).
Another reference in Page 450 — well after this point, close to the end of the story — when the Second Dragon-Human War was ended and the Vikings were celebrating the new peace and the return of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest. Unfortunately, being Vikings, their celebrating eventually moved into fighting and arguing, and Hiccup eventually asks Barbara for her horn in order to break it up.
Hiccup says: " 'In the meantime, I know what will stop them from arguing... Barbara," said Hiccup now, 'could I borrow your foghorn?' King Hiccup stood up on his Stone, and blew the foghorn as hard as he could. The thrilling sound of the foghorn, when blown at full blast, was so magnetically loud that it hit the ears like an electric shock..."
We actually see this when Heather blows her horn to call Windshear to her in Edge of Disaster Part 2 in Season 2 of RTTE. The sound is high-pitched and loud.
Tumblr media
Yet another — and final — reference is in Page 455-456, where, as the Vikings are singing songs during the Feast, Hiccup asks Barbara if she'd like her horn back, to which she replied that "he'd better keep it, as she thought that he was going to need it." (Vikings being Vikings, after all). Heather doesn't do this, but I was basically showing where the horn came from.
Tumblr media
Now, it could be that this is just a coincidence, and that this doesn't make Heather loosely based on Barbara the Barbarian. It could be that the horn is just a little reference from the books like the eyepiece (telescope) you see Hiccup and other characters use throughout the Dragons series.
6) Both girls are love interests of their respective Fishlegs characters.
Tumblr media
That's right. I'm getting to the JUICY stuff now! lol 😎🍿
Now Fishlegs in the movie franchise is vastly (pun not intended) different from Fishlegs in the books. Fishlegs in the books is small and skinny like Hiccup and has asthma, eczema, a squint, a limp, and numerous allergies, including one to reptiles. He wears glasses. And has red hair. And his dragon is a Deadly Shadow, a dragon not unsimilar to the Snaptrapper dragon — much cooler than a Gronkle, as the Deadly Shadow is a faster flyer, deadlier, and is a Stealth Dragon.
Fishlegs in the movies is... beefier than Fishlegs in the books. He also doesn't really have any allergies aside from Gobber's earwax (which they only did for comedy effect and the episode actually referenced Fishlegs' allergy to reptiles in the books, though Fishlegs seems to have gotten over that allergy as the books wore on). He doesn't have glasses, having perfect vision. He doesn't limp, he's strong, and doesn't squint. And he doesn't have asthma. And it seems like he can swim just fine, whereas in the books Fishlegs was a terrible swimmer and was only able to swim when he saw that Hiccup was in danger. He also has blond hair, not red. And he's a nerd when it comes to dragons, whereas Fishlegs in the books is an up-and-coming poet and bard with only the general knowledge of dragons.
Basically, he's a WIMP.
Fishlegs in the books is also an orphan, unlike in the movie, and also, unlike Movie Fishlegs, Fishlegs in the books also turns out to be royalty, being the son of Termagant, daughter of a Murderous Chieftain, and Alvin the Treacherous, making him the third cousin (according to the HTTYD wiki) of Hiccup and Snotlout. In the movie, Alvin is of no relation to Stoick, Hiccup, Snotlout, and Fishlegs at all, and Fishlegs is of no relation, in turn, to Hiccup. In the books, Fishlegs is also part Berserker on his mother's side, whereas Fishlegs has no such lineage.
One last thing: Fishlegs in the books was love-struck whenever Barbara was around, and couldn't form a coherent sentence together nor could think straight, often fainting. Fishlegs in the films and series never show any of that when with Heather. However, Fishlegs's secret letters to Heather could actually be a reference from the books where Fishlegs writes a secret love letter to Barbara the Barbarian against Hiccup's wishes.
In other words, he's a SIMP. 😂
Tumblr media
(Heathlegs by NightOwl374 on Tumblr — though the account isn't around anymore and you can only find these on Pinterest)
Now, there are those who hope that someday Fishlegs and Barbara get together (personally, I don't) like how Fishlegs and Heather do in RTTE.
Another thing that the girls have in common is that both are older than their male counterparts — she is about a year or so (give or take a few months) older than Fishlegs, while Barbara is said, according to Camicazi, to be at least three years older than Fishlegs.
Two noticeable differences are, however, that 1) Fishlegs and Heather were a couple at one point, whereas with Fishlegs and Barbara, it was a one-sided attraction on Fishlegs' part and probably wouldn't be a thing regardless; and 2) both Barbara and Fishlegs were royalty, whereas only Heather is royalty and Fishlegs is just your average Joe (or IS HE? 😏).
But Fishlegs and Heather's relationship could've been a very loose reference to the possibility — and hope — of Fishlegs' infatuation with Barbara the Barbarian in the end of How to Fight a Dragon's Fury (come on, Cressida! Make us a sequel series!), and wanting Fishlegs to at least GET THE GIRL for once! lol 😂
<><><><><><><><><><>
Conclusion:
Anyway, this is all that I have for you concerning this. What do you guys think? Do you think that Heather could be loosely inspired by Barbara from the books? Or do you think that I'm making mountains out of ant-hills and that these are just a bunch of coincidences! Tell me what you guys think! 😏
Thank you everyone for reading this article! I hope you guys enjoyed reading it! Until next time, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Have a great weekend!

Minlout Headcanon #18: (Modern AU) Whenever Snotlout and Minden go out on an ice cream date, or any date involving dessert or food stalls, whenever Minden picks her favorite flavor, even if it's not his preferred flavor, he gets it for himself anyway, because they're a couple, and eating the same food together is what couples do, by thunder!

Emergency Contact
In a modern fic I'm writing, I brought up Dagur's list of people he would contact in case of an emergency. I started thinking way too hard about this, so I might as well share (it's sad how this is also how most of my fics begin).
Hiccup is the first one on the list. He's known Dagur the longest and has already seen the good and bad, so having to get called to a jail because Dagur beat up a rude bartender isn't even a surprise. Is he going to still scold him? Yes, but Dagur's heard it enough that he already has several speeches ready.
Mala's next. She hasn't seen all the bad from Dagur, so there's a part of him that wants to keep her from knowing how deranged he can get. Still, she's reasonable and takes care of business, making her a perfect person to call. If he's actually in trouble, he knows she'll probably kill someone for him too which he finds cute.
Heather is third because Dagur trusts her. He doesn't want to be a burden, though, so she's not as high on the list as she could be. He knows her temper isn't great either, so it might just end with them both being in holding cells if worst comes to worst. If he doesn't contact her after both Hiccup and Mala were unavailable, she'll fuss at him, so whatever he does is a calculated risk.
Fishlegs is probably next because he's responsible. He doesn't get called for arrests. He would be too scared to be around the other people, so this is a "somebody blew up my car, can you give me a ride?" or another issue along those lines (because I'm convinced at least one person has tried to kill Dagur)
Snotlout because Dagur's not really sure if he'll make it better or worse. It's a coin toss. He prefers his Snothat time to be fun, but he still knows Snotty can hold his own. So, if he's about to go somewhere and needs backup, then Snotlout gets pushed up to the first place. It's just anything else that makes Dagur wary.
I'm almost not sure if Astrid is on this list. I feel like she has a similar problem to Heather with also being so angry. This could cause more problems than it fixes, but she'd probably be okay if he was stranded somewhere and needed a ride and Fishlegs wasn't around.
Ruff and Tuff are not on this list. There is 0 chance that Dagur's calling them for any kind of emergency. They're his prank buddies. If something is wrong, he doesn't trust that they'll turn the silly mode off and be helpful.
No one else is on that list either because he either doesn't know them very well (Atali, Gobber, and Minden), knows he would cause him to die somehow (Gustav), or still isn't sure if they're cool (Stoick).
Here is the story that made me think about this. I will admit that it's ridiculous, but it was also so much fun to make.

Some silly headcanons I have about Eret and Skullcrusher cuz why not
•Skullcrusher,as a tracker class dragon, likes to sniff and find things! So Eret will hide different things around the house and will wait for Skullcrusher to find them and sometimes he'll hide as well, and they literally play hide and seek.
•Even though not many people know this,Eret likes doing tricks while flying on Skullcrusher's back. He will stand up on his saddle while his dragon is flying, he'll try to balance without holding the handles, sometimes he'll even ride Skullcrusher without his saddle. They both love doing this,as it helps them trust eachother.
•Skullcrusher will sometimes interrupt Eret from whatever he's doing, because he wants to go fly with him and just have fun.
•Eret sleeps with Skullcrusher very often and will always sing a song or come up with a small melody and Skullcrusher will start purring and curl around him and they both love keeping this little thing between them 😍
•Eret scratches Skullcrusher under his chin or between his neck plates and Skullcrusher will start purring like crazy cause he LOVES being scratched at these places.
•When Skullcrusher first shed,Eret got so worried cause he thought that Skullcrusher had a skin disease or something and started acting like crazy, asking Hiccup and Fishlegs or whoever else he could find. When he understood it was just a normal behaviour he almost fell down from joy.
•Skullcrusher enjoys being bathed or just playing in water and will nudge Eret out of the house so they can go and swim together.
•Even though he'll never admit it, Eret is actually quite good at cooking. And when he found out that Skullcrusher likes berries,he decided to make a berry tart for him. Skullcrusher devoured it within minutes and after that day,Eret will always make berry tarts whenever he has the time.
•After their first dragon race, both Eret and Skullcrusher would always take place in the game, and would even be way too close at beating Astrid's high score.
•One time, Skullcrusher thought that Eret was hungry so he threw up a fish he had ate and sat there, waiting for Eret to eat it so he wouldn't be so hungry <3
•They both like going out on adventures, exploring the islands around Berk or flying around the archipelago, meeting new dragons and people.

More dragon rider disability headcanons for disability pride month!
(Ones specifically abt Hiccup are here)
Ruffnut has hypermobile EDS (when the twins were doing some bit that was basically Guinness book of world records she said smth abt 'worlds stretchiest skin' and my mom made a joke and said 'ruff has eds!' And it stuck)
A joke Ruffnut loves to make is saying Tuff is so insufferable she should just run away to join a circus and become a contortionist. She thinks it's the funniest thing ever
Hiccup also has some weird hypermobility stuff going on, when Ruff learns this she calls him a fellow circus freak (affectionate) and offers to let him come with her when she runs away. The response she got was "I'd rather stick my hand in Fenrir's mouth."
Tuff is visually impaired in his right eye from a childhood injury (another joke taken seriously)
All the riders are neurodivergent!
Snotlout has a frequently irregular heartbeat as well as memory issues due to how many times he's been struck by lightning. His whole book he wrote in that one episode isn't the only writing he does, he keeps a notebook to help keep track of minor things he might forget.
Astrid tries to make Hiccup breakfast in bed when he's having bad pain days and is too tired to do it himself. She almost burns the house down every time, so Toothless will go and get the other riders to help out while Astrid is kicked out of the kitchen and sent back to bed
Hiccup can be really fucking mean sometimes! Usually it's intentional bc he's in a bad mood and wants to be left alone. If it's seemingly unprovoked though, the others know it as a sign he's likely in pain and needs to be left alone (he still insists on getting work done but usually Toothless annoys him into resting)
Astrid has aches in her leg from when she got shot with that arrow, it being poisoned with dragon root did something to mess up the healing process so its worse than other old injuries (Dragon root isn't poisonous to humans but still having it in your blood stream isn't a good idea). She's also very mean when she's in pain, especially because it ruins her schedule since she can't train. Eventually her and Hiccup come to an agreement when they're having bad pain days they'll meet up in one of their huts and just. Sit together enjoying the others comforting presence but rarely talking
This is because Hiccup and Astrid both hate being in pain in front of people, they both share that almost extreme fear of vulnerability and the best they can do is take comfort in each other
Hiccup and Fishlegs are hyperfixation buddies! Fishlegs is the only one who doesn't get mad (it's just fond exasperation) when Hiccup wakes him up in the middle of the night to infodump, they just bounce off each other talking about dragons until woah suddenly the sun is rising and that is when Fishlegs gets upset because he values his sleep
All the riders have burn scars of varying severity. They literally work with dragons there's no way they wouldn't. And they all deal with their pain in different ways, but are unwavering supportive of each other when they can be
I've said it before and I'll say it again, a lot of characters should be disabled.
I know, cartoon logic and all, but the things that happen to these guys are things that should affect them for the rest of their lives. And watching characters struggle with permanent change like that, the realization you can never go back to how things were, and eventually healing and learning that's okay! You can still find happiness and be happy and it doesn't make your pain any less valid! It's so important to me and that's obviously reflected in my interpretations of my favorite characters lmao

I would like to write and/or read more about Hiccup dealing with grief, trauma, and the unwanted burden of leading the tribe immediately after Stoick's death.
I keep thinking about a scene where Hiccup is listening to complaints and petitions in the great hall. At the beginning, he's clearly anxious and unsure of himself. As the meeting goes on, his eyes glaze over and his mind keeps wandering to save him from the stress of the situation. His friends and family are helping as much as possible. Fishlegs is taking notes because he knows Hiccup won't remember anything. Astrid and Snotlout are firm with people who are being too forward or stepping over the line, meanwhile Valka offers compromise in situations where they need to mediate between two opposing parties. Gobber and the twins add levity when things get too heavy.
It takes a full team of people to help keep Hiccup on track. He nods and occasionally speaks in assent to give the appearance of being present, but in his mind, he's flying on Toothless somewhere far, far away.

httyd hcs abt the gang's relationship to eret bc we were deprived.
eret has a sense of camaraderie with all of them eventually, but it's super rough to get along with anyone besides astrid & hiccup at first
him & astrid get along the best, obv. they spar, they talk shit, they open up abt serious things, they trade information
eret dealing with how quickly he's changed his life & while astrid doesn't fully understand she rmrs how quickly her mind had been changed & getting used to it.
stormfly still plays fetch with eret (with a stick or... with him LMAO but it helps him get used to falling from large heights & trusting he'll be caught by a dragon, either her or skullcrusher)
hiccup immediately trusts eret as much as he trusts anyone he's known for years & eret doesn't know if he deserves it but he strives to make it so he does
eret has HIGH respect for hiccup & understands what he's going through to an extent as the son of a chief (tho hiccup is chief now). hiccup is one of the only ones who know eret was son of a chief.
yea i'm going off of what was said abt fire tides with eret being the son of a chief
eret figures out exactly where toothless likes to be pet & always has to give him a scratch under the chin to say hello
fishlegs enthusiasm for dragons & infodumping is a lot for eret at first, but very quickly fishlegs unabashedly is sweet, gentle, shy, patient, & still has the ability to bite back at ppl (mostly snotlout & the twins) & eret is like okay word
fishlegs helps eret understand skullcrusher more, as he's more than eager to step into the role of teacher (this makes hiccup happy)
fishlegs tells eret abt his family's regatta history & eret is actually invested!! he's interested!!! in turn, eret shows fishlegs his ship!!
eret: (sees meatlug) oh. (gives her a snack) (gives her a snack) (gives her a snack) (gives her a
we know snotlout sees eret as a rival but eret doesn't Care™️ but it'd be funnier i think if eret doesn't Care™️ but also enjoys mildly taking the piss out of snotlout for fun
it's so easy to work snotlout up & after eret's had his fun for a few months he casually brings it up to snotlout & snotlout wants to crawl into a hole & die
they do become good friends & it's weird for ppl outside of the gang bc eret is so dry towards snotlout vs snotlout still getting in eret's face (affectionate)
hookfang just likes to push himself into eret's personal space & cuddle(?) so eret just allowe it LMAO
it's ruffnut's bluntness that has eret finally relax around her.
she defends him in a rather mundane event of eret getting heckled (again) by berkians who don't trust him (this is like, month 5 of him living on berk) by looking at each viking & roasting them calmly from the ground up with information they didn't know she knew
eret tells her thanks & she just... smiles at him. so he gives her a kiss on the cheek & it's a rare moment of ruff getting slightly flushed
tuffnut is actually very easy to get along with. he always checks on eret & makes sure he's doing alright (in his tuffnut way)
tuffnut is so blasé abt things while also being one of the most hyper ppl eret has ever met & it's so intriguing to eret how someone can be a walking contradiction but make it make sense so easily
tuffnut gives eret unprompted pep talks & eret tries to respond in kind instead of fully brushing tuff off & tuff is like :D
barf & belch are as chaotic as their riders & maybe... maybe... eret will enable them on occassion (yes he will. what? it's funny).
eret rlly learns abt everyone & learns to like them for them as they like him for him :)
also they all saw him without a shirt ONE TIME (1) & haven't shut up abt it since

The Use of Dragonskins (HTTYD/RTTE)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Welcome to another article! Today, we'll be talking about dragonskins and their usage.
In the HTTYD books, dragonskins are used to make fireproof items and are even commonly used to make fireproof suits. It's also meant to be worn as a type of body armor. Either it can refute arrows or cuts, or it was used to defend against dragon fire (since in this world, Vikings used dragons as hunting companions and steeds of war like how one uses horses and dogs). According to "How To Twist A Dragon's Tale", the Lava-Lout Tribe were particularly famous and distinctive for always wearing dragonskin suits to protect them from fire and heat, since they live on a volcanic island.
In the TV series, it's quite different. There are no scenes that provide evidence that dragonskin have anti-fire properties. At best, Eruptadon saliva does that. While Buffalord saliva is the only known cure for Odin's Scourge. However, it's also true that there hasn't been any evidence AGAINST the dragonskins used by the Dragon Hunters and Flyers having anti-fire properties. Considering their occupations, it's logical to assume that the dragonskins they wear provide some if not complete protection against fire.
Interestingly, though, in the last two films, HTTYD 2 and HTTYD 3, there are clear signs of dragon scales and dragonskins being used as direct fire protection agents.
Also, the dragonskin gear that Dragon Hunters and Flyers wear must have anti-dragon protection since they keep returning in following episodes like Stormtroopers. Though that could just be your typical DreamWorks Dragons cloning technique. 😂
That being said, though, it kinda defeats the purpose of fire protection if most of your skin and flammable clothes are exposed to flame. 😂

However, unlike in the books, in the TV series (and in the films), dragonskins also have another purpose: a statement of status and fashion.
Aside from the fact that they look aesthetically pleasing to wear, it's also a show of one's prowess and status as a man and as a warrior. As Hiccup had even said in the first film:
"Killing dragons is everything around here. A Nadder head is sure to get me at least noticed. Gronckles are tough. Taking down one of those would definitely get me a girlfriend. A Zippleback? Exotic. Two heads, twice the status. Then, there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those."
As such, in Archipelagoan society, even if we discount differences between the Inner Isles and the rest of the Archipelago, there is a hierarchy or meritocracy that is based on what dragons you kill, and how many of them. And it's also based on how difficult these dragons are to kill. Speaking of which, Mildew was mentioned to have been an excellent dragon slayer in his younger days.
In fact, the "Deadly Dozen" who pursue and hunt the Gang in S5's "Dawn of Destruction" and the two-part "Wings of War" episodes are all wearing dragonskins from these dragons, signifying their status and prowess as elites.

Hiccup goes on to saying this:
"No one has ever killed a Night Fury. That's why I'm going to be the first."
Night Furies were considered by many to be the ultimate prey — the coveted prize to fame, glory, and fortune. While no one on Berk had ever seen a Night Fury let alone slain one, Hiccup was desperate to kill one in order to be accepted as a Viking like the rest of his community. (Only for him to wimp out in the end and become friends with one. lol 😂😉) Had he gone through with it, he would've had a luxurious dragonskin that would've boosted his status among the many famous Viking heroes in Archipelago and Berkian history.
Interestingly, in HTTYD 3, Grimmel, the villain, and a contrasting portrayal of what Hiccup could've become, says this:
"When I was a boy and I came up on a Night Fury, I killed it where it slept. That simple act of courage made me a hero in my village."
Strangely though, he doesn't wear anything to show his prowess or achievements. For somebody who boasts about having practically slain every Night Fury in existence (a declaration that I doubt in itself since it's technically impossible in this era), he doesn't wear anything to represent that, like a Night Fury dragonskin cloak, or outfit, or Night Fury claws or teeth. Nothing. Just... boring old leather. 🙄
However, it's different with Drago from HTTYD 2. As you can see from the picture below, he's wearing a cloak of dragonskin which he uses as both a status statement and also as something to shield him from dragonfire.
Tumblr media
Of course, as much as I'd like to declare that to be Night Fury skin, there's no proof of it being so, and could easily be some other type of dragon. But if it is, it could be the skin of an older Night Fury. It looked darker in the film, but whatever.
So in conclusion, dragonskins are used for their anti-fire properties (to protect them from dragonfire and from fire in general), as a fashion statement, and most importantly as a status symbol that showcases their prowess and accomplishments as warriors. Dragonskins make good tent material, apparently, as evidenced by the Dragon Hunters.
I hope this was somewhat enlightening. It certainly was for me. Thank you for reading, and see you in the next article!
Long Live the Night!

okay headcanon Hiccup's interest in cartography started when he was a kid and nobody picked up on it. mapmaking is how he got into drawing. he used to map out different parts of berk and shit. toothless gave him the ability to explore and create maps nobody had ever seen before.
