I’ve got herp brain rot from treating a skink so here’s an odd asK - Do any of your lads like amphibians/reptiles?

Yeah absolutely!!! I can give a quick run down of everyone’s pref, too!

Actively doesn’t like or is scared of Them - Patch, Hawk, Cue, Pictoris, Berry

Indifferent to Them - Papyrus, Red, Haze, Eclipse, Snare, Hemlock, Raviel, Pin, Ice

Likes Them well enough - Sans, Blue, Gold, Copper, Dove, Rust, AR, Luck, Ara, Boötes, Cire, Lace, Rosewood, Clover, Perp

Loves Them!! - Stretch, Ghost, Coal, Boss

Just an overall animal person - Edge, Dusk, Antares, Elester, Void

Most of the guys in indifferent would also be friendly with them, they just don’t really have any draw to them particularly, while the only ones afraid of them would be Patch and Berry

That being said! The guys that like them would be friendly with them, wouldn’t mind keeping the household friendly types as pets, and might be interested in learning more about them from those that are more interested! Of which, Stretch, Ghost, and Coal would be the ones with most direct and specific interest!! Boss is mostly just in that category because he likes them more than most other animals, and may keep a more exotic type as a pet, but otherwise isn’t like the others as much.

Antares would also be an exception to being just an animal lover overall! The other guys in that category love animals, but rarely seek them out as any sort of specific interest, while Antares loves animals, all animals, a lot! He’d love to read books or watch specials about any of them, he’d love any chance to meet any animals, from something as simple as a cat to the most exotic creatures on earth!

So!! Antares and Stretch would likely be the most knowledgeable on those dudes, they’d know tons of different species and breeds, and may even keep some as pets, household situation allowing, while Ghost more so just likes them in general. Would enjoy keeping a pet or visiting them at a zoo or reserve, but he doesn’t really seek out information about them as much. Just likes that they exist and finds them neat! I think he’d have an especially soft spot for snakes. Antares might also have a tiny bias for, if this applies, all the strange creatures in the deep sea. That’s not so much amphibian or reptilian, but it’s adjacent agjdhsjfjdj

I think Stretch would especially love learning about their histories and like, their evolution! Amphibians especially, they’re so neat to him, well, and komodo dragons, I think they’d also be a favorite! I’d imagine he’d really enjoy having an aquarium with some newts and fish!

Oh! And Coal loves salamanders and snakes a lot!! But lizards are a close second place, he’d love to learn more about them on the surface, he really admires how adaptable they are and how unique they are to so many other animals!

Fun tangentially related fact! Edge loves when toads visit his garden, and leaves little “scrap nests” of leaves and garden trimmings around the flowers and porch for them <3

The Court AU has me DEAD!!! If you’d be willing, what sort of outfits would they wear? I’d love to draw them!

Anon, I had so many tabs open looking up medieval-type fashion and armor, we're talking like 30+, felt super awesome finishing this and closing them all 😌

Anyway--

Sans (Undertale): What’s black and blue and white all over? Why, him of course! His jester’s motley features a black-and-white diamond pattern, offset by bright, rich, royal blue—a mark of his service to the king. He doesn’t wear one of those silly hats, though…because he wears a silly hood instead! Less chance of falling off, you see. When not in costume he tends toward simple tunics, of decent material and often still in blue.

Papyrus (Undertale): Almost never out of full plate armor, even in downtime, he has to dress for the job he wants and that means being a shining metal bastion of knightly glory at all times! …Though he does often remove his helmet and hold it by his sword at his hip, or fasten it to his steed’s side. He’s a very handsome skeleton, it would be cruel to deny the people the chance to see their hero’s face!

Sky (Underswap Sans): Soft blues and yellows, as a squire only lightly armored—greaves and pauldrons, a mail shirt beneath his tunic if he’s expected to go into battle—but he considers even that much armoring to be overkill for what he’s doing. Still, his Captain insists, and it makes his brother feel better, so he takes care protecting himself. He has some nicer finery to wear about court, as a nobleman, but tends simpler for anything that might be dirtied or torn in training.

Paps (Underswap Papyrus): Rich green and earthy browns, his clothing tends to be without ostentation—no embroidery, no gold buckles or buttons, or anything especially elaborate. He may be noble but he’s a scholar and a recluse and prefers not to stand out much. Still, the fabrics of which his clothing is made are always fine, as coarse or stiff materials quite put him off. Mostly cottes—long belted tunics—with the occasional robe over, if it's cold.

Jasper (Underfell Sans): Blacks and browns, sturdy plain clothes which can stand up to considerable wear and tear. Often wears a short diamond-quilted gambeson and some leather armor (vambraces and greaves), but always has a sword belted to his hip and a cloak made of dire-wolf’s fur draped over his shoulders. If ever he should need to acknowledge his denounced family name, he does have some finer clothing stored away somewhere—in red—and a shiny gold signet ring with his family crest on it.

Pyre (Underfell Papyrus): Usually in half plate armor, dark metal heavily scratched and scorched, dents meticulously hammered back out. He also wears a tattered red cape about his shoulders that billows quite majestically behind him when he rides or runs into battle. He will occasionally dress down in laced tunics and breeches, still in red and black, fine but not too fine as to raise suspicion about his heritage. Should all that ever come out, he does have a suit of pristine night-black armor he’s been dying to inherit and a silken cape to pin about it with a golden clasp of the family’s crest.

Mal (Swapfell Sans): Mostly black but flaunts his privilege and royal ties with purple accents wherever possible. Brigandine armor with a fine gold-plated gorget and pauldrons and a few other ornamental trappings—he is the Empress’ personal guard and must in some capacity be as elegant. Very fine doublets and tunics for his (rare) downtime, often with gold threading, but not fond of most jewelries.

Rus (Swapfell Papyrus): Dark colors and crisp whites, noble yet eccentric, he has a lot of fine doublets and other such court-wear but tends not to actually…wear them. He can mostly be found in loose-fitting cottes, baggy sleeves often penned up by leather armlets to keep them out of his paints. He has a fur-hooded cloak for travel or cold weather, but he rarely leaves his rooms, much less the castle, so he doesn’t don it often.

Slate (Horrortale Sans): Dark browns and off-white cream, simple rough-hewn clothing showing signs of wear and occasionally odd stains. He works in the stables, with animals, and being around animals so much makes it difficult to keep clean. He has a somewhat decent dark blue cloak that he’ll wear into town for errands, or in polite company—it has a hood to conceal the great jagged hole in his head that tends to make the squeamish or timid flinch away from him.

Papy (Horrortale Papyrus): Still hasn’t quite shaken the habit to be armored, even when it isn’t necessary, but he’s cut down from full plate to chain mail only, much lighter and easier to move around in—which is vital when hurrying to the training field for an accident, or running to meet a wounded knight at the gates. He wears a simple tabard over his mail, blue with red edging (the Queen’s colors), and keeps a pouch of bandages and other aid supplies belted to his waist instead of a sword.

Ash (Undergloom Sans): The livery of the king’s court, gray and gold, but dyed into fabrics suitable for common folk. He still wears gray when not performing at court, tunics so thickly woven they could pass as a gambeson and often paired with hooded cloaks, but he keeps his golds set aside until needed to keep them in good condition. He takes equal care of his shiny brass sackbut (it’s a horn, with a very funny name but an instrument nonetheless) so it always plays well.

Yrus (Undergloom Papyrus): Off-white and tan linens, loose and breathable for hot work in the kitchens, sleeves rolled up and pinned at the elbows to keep them from getting in the way. Always an apron about his waist, occasionally with food stains after a long day’s work but these he quickly tends to as soon as he’s able. He has nothing in the way of real finery but tries very hard to make sure what he has is clean and presentable.

Brick (Horrorfell Sans): Fine brocaded doublets of rich red and shining gold thread, as a duke and brother to a king, he does have to dress the part a bit. He wears more jewelry, especially rings, but nearly always still has his dire-wolf fur cloak over his shoulders. When called for executions, he dresses down quite a bit, in simple black cloth with only a leather pauldron over one shoulder to help brace the weight of his axe before he swings.

King (Horrorfell Papyrus): Half plate armor essentially at all times, even formal or polite occasions—he’s the owner of a stolen throne and all too aware that it could be stolen from him the same way he got it. His breastplate is scaled and his pauldrons are elaborately spiked, but it’s all black. The only pop of color on him is his crown, the same worn by Asgore and Undyne, gold and sharp, with rubies inlaid.

Merc (Horrorswap Sans): Chain mail over a finely-made kaftan and beneath a traveling cloak, the latter two with signs of wear from a long journey. His head is notably absent of a crown—left behind in the kingdom he fled—but a new one awaits him soon, of flashing silver and blue stone, depicting the phases of the moon. When fully established in his new kingdom, he may begin dressing as a proper king again, draping himself in the blue and silver finery of the land that sheltered him.

Ell (Horrorswap Papyrus): Browns, greens, and blacks, he wears light leather armor—really just a breastplate and vambraces—and a thick woolen cloak about his shoulders. He has no need of greaves for his shins, legs lost to an accident in the wilderness, but supplanted by magical prosthetics, living blackened wood provided by his land when he called upon it for aid. …Not that he’s fully accepted that it’s his land, keeping his crown of twisting copper and emerald tucked away in a saddlebag instead of on his brow. Maybe someday…

Pitch (Horrorswapfell Sans): Rich purple and verdant green, amidst a sea of black—he favors very fine fabrics with open lacing at the chest. Still not especially fond of jewelry, but wears considerably more decorative leather braces on forearms, shins, and even the occasional full-chest corset. (He has some chronic pain and the extra pressure and support in certain spots helps.) He wears considerably more plain clothes for knight-training purposes and when traveling wears a black cloak with a cowl that comes down over the hole in his face at a point, as the beak of a raven.

Nemo (Horrorswapfell Papyrus): Usually in half plate splint mail armor for his patrols along the wall, but favors rusty oranges, brown and black for the tunics and boots and breeches he wears out of it. Often carries a lantern, and always has tinder in a pouch on his hip. Beside his pouch is a war-horn in case an alert would need to be called, loud enough to make everyone come running if it’s ever sounded.

Sunny (Gastertale Sans): A cavalierly styled courtier, at first having made do with graciously lent clothing and now being able to buy his own in a whole variety of rich colors—yellow, blue, magenta, and on. His aim is to look at home in court, which means he must dress as other courtiers do, so he has doublets and fine tunics and many, many fashionable capelets with embroidery and stylish pins, as well as a few equally chic plumed hats. The other courtiers look to him now for the latest fashion trends and he couldn’t be happier.

Aster (Gastertale Papyrus): A bit more subdued in style than his brother…though only a bit. He favors black frocks, almost as a cleric would wear, but beneath them, elegant doublets in greens and yellows as vibrant as anything his twin wears, with fine silver filigree work in his buckles and pins and clasps. He’s the pinnacle of restrained class and taste and it’s no wonder at all that the king should respect him so highly if his care in thought is as his care in appearance.

Spectr (Transcendtale Sans): Deep, dark black from head to toe, most prominently a long hooded cloak with two eye-lights glowing in the darkness. He always wears gloves and never lets his hood down, as he’s not especially fond of his metal bones and doesn’t really wish to be seen. It’s difficult to see in the daytime, but at night he’s trailed by faint wisps of ghostly light in all colors of the rainbow, such a strange sight that many a drunkard who’s seen him has poured out their bottle presuming they’d had quite a bit too much.

PapAIrus (Transcendtale Papyrus): Full plate armor, of course, but as he’s now some sort of spectral entity, it (and he!) glows and is slightly see-through. Being ghostly has washed out his colors quite thoroughly which is unfortunate—mostly all white with hints of silvery blue—but on the up-side he seems able to change his appearance some by will alone, donning or discarding his helmet at will, manifesting a majestic cape for himself out of the ether, and so on. It seems a fair enough trade to him!

Xanth (Ascendswap Sans): A man at court now, he’s donned an eye-patch and abandoned the trappings of prospective knighthood, fully embraced courtier fashion…if a bit ‘eccentrically.’ He favors bright yellows and spring greens, flowing garments of fine cloth layered beneath and over leather vambraces, gorget, and tasset. All these are elaborately, intricately designed and certainly make the similarly intricate gold jewelry (with multicolored gems) that he wears at wrist and neck stand out, but it’s hardly in fashion… Still, the mystic’s thinking is often inscrutable.

Piper (Ascendswap Papyrus): Unlike his brother, very fashionable and eye-catching, in rich amaranths and brilliant turquoises, with even the occasional lavender. He has many fine embroidered doublets, threaded liberally with gold, and wears many pieces of gold jewelry as well—necklaces, bracelets, pins, and brooches. When showing the birds of the crown at court or bidding them on a royal hunt, he wears the livery of the crown-proper—royal purple and gold—and always has a thick leather falconer’s glove on his left hand.

Carmine (Underfell Fruition Sans): What’s black and white and red all over? Well, newspapers haven’t been invented yet, so it’s him, of course! He’s no jester so he hasn’t a motley to wear to work, but he is a performer and does dress in the livery of the king, which is red and black. The material is a bit finer than he’s used to, but being that he’s no longer wearing rags and rotting in a hole, he’s quite pleased with it and doesn’t mind the bright colors that help him attract the eyes of many comely nobles at court. Off-duty, he sticks to loose, somewhat open tunics—red still very much preferred.

Tank (Underfell Fruition Papyrus): Laced linen shirts, not especially loosely fitting due to his largeness in the chest and shoulders but he hasn’t burst any seams in awhile so the measurements must be somewhat correct. He’s fond of white and a true connoisseur of red, all shades from dark to very light. He keeps an array of small carpentry tools—hammers, chisels, things for measuring—in a roll on his hip, a dedicated apprentice to the core.

Vi (Swapfell Fruition Sans): All black, pourpoint armor beneath fine silk doublets but almost disappointingly plain otherwise—no embroidery, no ornament, or stitched pattern, or brocade. Over this he wears a cloak, equally fine and with at least some ostentation, a bit of silver stitched decoration that matches the intimidatingly clawed silver gauntlet he wears upon his left hand—a symbol of his wealth, if not his status. These flashy items are for matters of court only, as he has a much more nondescript hooded cloak and less identifiable sharp implement which he uses for matters of stealth and misdeeds when it is important that he not be recognized.

Hunter (Swapfell Frution Papyrus): A prince in princely attire…mostly. He happily flaunts the color purple but proudly wears it with the black of his old family name, and drapes himself in silk tunics, fine (mostly decorative) pauldrons, capes and capelets. He tends to show off a bit more of his chest than seems appropriate for a man of his station, and seems to wear his elegant silver jewelry in ways such that the eye is drawn there, and…other places, but few question the whims of royalty. His pewter crown is heavy and inelegant and he’s talked much with his brother about how angry people would be if he had it melted and recast into something more stylish.

Kohl (Descendtale Sans): Plain, rough tunics, in black and dark brown. He wears a heavy fur-lined gabardine as it gets quite cold in the dungeons, though it’s uncertain where he managed to get such a nice garment. He keeps a knife on his belt, large and jagged-toothed, and though he hasn’t had need to use it yet, the threat of it tends to keep most prisoners from attempting to bring him harm.

Bram (Descendtale Papyrus): He’s traded in his full plate armor for a comfortably fit leather jerkin, accompanied by matching gauntlets to protect his hands and torso (inasmuch as they need protection, without flesh) from the thorns he trims back every day. He mostly wears black and white and brown, all things closely fit to his body, less they snag overmuch and need to be replaced too often. His clothing is simple but well-suited to his work, and he wears it nicely.

The Bitty Connection

After gathering samples from everyone that opted into the “bitty” party which was Maiuo, Swirl, Alp, Mimi, Space, and Fire; Crow made her way to see her favorite fish friend… Undyne, aka Kraken. She was Smoke and Indigo’s Undyne and though she looked mean, Crow knew she was a sweet loving anime geek with nerdy tendencies. Even though she hated humans she found peace in Crow’s realm. She was given a lab, she was allowed experiments, given anime. And suddenly a delivery truck was parked outside her door with a bunch of new anime, manga of her favorite ships, plus some new ones, and cups of noodles. There was even a plushie thrown in of Smoke and Crow as she grabbed them up and squealed in delight. Grabbing up some of the new manga she saw it featured all new ships. Someone named “Aritafae” and Mutt. A handsome looking skellie that was close to how Smoke looked but without a broken nasal cavity. Another manga with a bunch of other skellie boys wearing collars and living in a dorm house together with the same mysterious “Aritafae”, a cute woman that could shift into a cat. The anime consisted of new stuff she’d never seen before and was delighted to get her hands on it. But she grew suspicious…. This never happened before. She sighed anyway and the delivery driver was helping in bringing it all in. More stacks on the already overly cluttered floor, more cups of noodles piling up on the counters. Thankfully, this lab had a built-in storage room and she was able to move a lot of it into there. But just as they finished up, she heard the tell-tale sing song voice of Crow. Groaning she shut the door… of course… she accepted the damn gifts… it better not be anymore bitty requests. Sure, Bitty Dewie was sweet compared to Bitty Mol but after Bitty Mol that left a bad taste in her mouth. “Hey Kracken, I see you got the gifts. You uhh… ready for this request?” Crow asked with a smile as she leaned against the wall looking right at her with smile on her stupid human face. “No.” Kraken deadpan stared at her and flat out answered rather quickly. Pouting moving away from the wall. “Ahh, come on. I see you got the shipment.” Crow sang out to her. “Oh… please s…stop singing…” Kraken was trying not to stutter. She had been working on it. Honestly, with Crow’s help she was getting better. “Ok, fine, but please I got some bitty requests. Humans and I have the required stuff to make em. I mean you signed for the shipment and I promise no more bitties. Just please do this.” Crow wasn’t one to beg, but she was begging right now. This must be important to her, Kranken thought to herself looking at the “witch” that let them stay, gave them houses, didn’t care what they were before or where they came from. Gave them all roofs, food, jobs, even the demons and other beings smiled at them, welcomed them with open arms. Stars… how could she say no? Damn her sappy heart, damn Crow for her good-natured loving ways. But … she figured she owed a lot to her, most humans would have snubbed their noses at them, sent them away. But not Crow… she watched as Crow first day opened her arms and gave Sans… or Black or Indigo whatever he was called now and just hugged him. Watched as Black threw her across the room and stormed out. How she laughed off the pain even though she winced, how she just smiled even though she was hurting physically and said it was ok it wasn’t his fault. That she forgave him now and always. Alphys or Dina called her a softie, an idiot. That was until two weeks later when they were all invited to a celebration at the Jinia Manor and … Crow… entered battle. Magic was not allowed, no armor and but weapons were allowed, and death apparently was a no go this time. Curious she found out the Jinia; at least most of them, had found a way to bring back their dead. Using the soul and their spirit to do so. But seeing Crow battle it out, it changed the view of many of them. Crow was a warrior with a big heart. That changed Indigo’s view of her. He had once said to Dina it was like “watching an angel in battle, dancing while her soul sang.” And thus, many came to respect her more. Looking at Crow now begging… ugh “Get up come on.” “YES.” Crow called out happily and the two got everything set up and started. The baggies and one vial were all clearly labeled and marked so Kraken got to work on making the newest bitties. “Give m..me about a week? I’ll call you w…when I’m done.” Kraken told her waving Crow away with her hand as she got into her zone. Human bitties, she was working with human bitties. She was more excited than she let on. And one of them seemed to have antlers… Stars she was excited to see these bitties. Crow went home later that night and grabbed up a copy of the manga where Hal had a collar and all of them were in high school sharing a dorm living together, the antics, the collars, the little “love drama”. Snrking Crow put it in the mail and her a copy right then and there. Thinking though as she sat on the couch she heard an egg hatch and buzzing sounds. “Shadow bees.” Wrynn called from the nusery as Crow got up to look at just one of her newest creations. Shadow bee to make ashen honey. They were adorable. One giant Queen bee, a bunch of workers, and some guard bees. The Shadow Queen bee about the size of a fucking rat buzzed over to Crow curious and Crow scooping her up nuzzled that thing. Taking her to little garden outside in the back and showing her around. She hadn’t had bees before but now a little less magic would get used trying to keep everything pollenated. “I shall name you Fuzzy.” Crow declared. A black bee, with a red stringer and violet bands around her and silver blue wings. She was just cute. A couple years ago the Undertale, Underfell, Underswap, and Swapfell (Red) universes collided, merging into a single - peaceful - universe.

The skelebros have become friends in this universe, often hanging out and spending time together,

Except for Sans, who is distant with everyone and has a tense relationship with Papyrus.

After losing a drinking challenge, Red asked Sans on a date, where he found himself with more questions than answers. A second date to the museum further complicated his feelings. Third time's the charm, right?

Chapter Eight: Intriguing

—Red—

Red held the café door open for Sans, noting how hard his counterpart was shivering with a frown.

“y’shoulda worn a thicker coat,” Red commented as they took their place at the back of the queue. “yer shakin’ like a fuckin’ maraca.”

“it’s the s-song of my p-people,” Sans snarked back as his teeth chattered.

Red rolled his eyelights, debating if he should offer his coat to Sans, at least to help him warm back up.

“i’ll be fine once i get somethin’ t’ drink,” Sans said, responding to Red’s unasked question like he could read his damn mind.

Sans was looking up at the menu board, hugging himself in an attempt to subdue his shivering.

“RED!”

The loud, cheerful voice broke the general quiet of the café, and made Red tense up.

wait … what’s today?

He pulled out his phone to check and groaned.

Every other week the skeletons had a standing get together at The Parlor. Usually at least a couple of them would show.

Red had it marked on his calendar, he just hadn’t thought to look at it before he texted Sans.

He was a fucking moron.

Fuck.

He wondered if he could get away with not responding. If somehow Blue would think he had the wrong skeleton.

… right, like there’s more’n one of me.

Red turned toward Blue’s voice, plastering a smile on his face and bracing himself for who might be there.

Mutt and Stretch were looking between him and Sans. Stretch’s expression was openly curious, like he had found a particularly interesting shiny thing that he couldn’t wait to take apart.

Mutt, on the other hand, had a grin that was wide and sharp. It was a grin that Red knew all too well. He was in for a whole mountain of bullshit from that one.

Black had his skull in a ledger, coffee cup abandoned on the table in front of him. As usual he seemed to be working in his time off. Fucking workaholic.

Blue was standing and waving, excited and bright as always. He didn’t seem to notice (or care) that he was bothering other patrons with his antics.

And Papyrus …

Papyrus wasn’t looking at Red at all. Hs eyelights were focused on Sans with an expression that set Red’s instincts screaming, although he wasn’t sure what they were saying.

Then he seemed to notice Red looking at him and the expression was gone. Replaced with a grin as wide as Blue’s, unthreatening and kind.

Red almost doubted he had seen the look Papyrus had shot Sans.

Almost.

“RED!” Papyrus called out, causing more customers to glare at the table of skeletons. Red could hear some of them muttering complaints to one another. A couple got up and left, taking their drinks with them. “COME JOIN US!”

A pit formed in his core.

Red wanted to accept the invitation, but something about Papyrus was making him uneasy. He trusted his instincts, especially when he couldn’t figure out why they were freaking the fuck out.

He also didn’t want to abandon Sans. He was an asshole, but he wasn’t rude.

“go talk to them,” Sans said, so quiet the words were almost lost to the background murmur of the café.

Red spun on him, his full attention on the other in an instant.

Sans’ eyelight flickered at Red before returning to the menu boards that he was staring at, unblinking. “i can order if ya … if you tell me what you want. i actually got the g this time.”

Red stared at Sans, his mind a jumble as misfitting pieces of a puzzle started to resolve themselves, just a little.

“i ain’t ditchin’ ya,” Red growled. “if it got back t’ the boss i wouldn’t hear the end of it.”

Sans was still in his casual, lazy slouch - but it was no longer casual or lazy. Red hadn’t noticed before but Sans was … tense.

A wire, ready to snap with just a little more pressure.

Scared.

The line moved and Sans took a measured step forward with it, leaving Red a step behind him. He tipped his head back, looking at Red out of the corner of an eye socket.

“it’s not ditching if I tell ya-“ he flinched, changing the word partway through, “-ou … you to do it.”

His grin was too wide. Too tight at the edges.

“if you don’t you’ll spend the entire time glancing over at them like a schoolgirl with a crush. just go.”

“i ain’- !“ Red began. His words were cut off with the pop of displaced air that came with shortcuts. A heavy weight rested on his shoulders, nearly knocking him over.

“heya Red,” Mutt said in a lazy drawl, his eyelights fixed on Sans. “gonna introduce me t’ yer date?”

“git offa me!” Red snarled in response, shoving the other away. Red glared up at Mutt as he snarled, “ya already know sans, asshole.”

“weird,” Mutt said as he continued to leer at Sans, who had his back carefully to Red and the interloper. Red could see his head was cocked just a little, listening to their conversation. “i thought that was sans. i take it yer little ‘date’ went well, then?”

Red flinched at the barely concealed mockery in Mutt’s voice, tensing for half a soulbeat. He dug his wallet from his pocket and shoved it toward Sans.

“mocha. small. double chocolate. get it t’go.”

“sure,” Sans agreed with a nod. The tattered trifold disappearing into his own hoodie pocket.

Red grabbed the ring of Mutt’s collar to drag him back to the table with the others.

He’d almost figured out the damned, infuriating puzzle that was Sans.

He wasn’t about to let Mutt fuck it up.

—Sans—

Sans watched Red drag Mutt away with a half-hearted smile. His soul clenched with desperate want, and he turned away before he could meet anyone’s eyelights.

They were staring at him. He could feel it.

He clenched his fists in his hoodie pockets, fighting the urge to scratch at the back of his neck. Trying to ignore the way his bones prickled uncomfortably with shame and fear.

He repeated Red’s order to himself softly, a mantra. He didn’t want to mess it up.

“small mocha, double chocolate, to go.”

Today had been enough of a disaster.

Sans should have never agreed to come out when he still had a visible bruise. Red had been tense since seeing it, even when he changed the subject. He kept glancing at the back of Sans’ hoodie, as if he could see the injury through the fabric.

Of course, Sans’ slip (heh) up of an explanation hadn’t helped.

His only excuse was being exhausted. Papyrus hadn’t let up on him after their fight, waking him early every day and sending him out to find a job.

(at least he was sleeping deeply enough that he didn’t have nightmares.)

He wasn’t getting enough sleep. He’d fallen back to his old go-to explanation: a smile and a pun about ice and slippers. He hadn’t updated it since they’d left the Underground.

He hadn’t needed to.

(had it really been that long since someone cared enough to ask?)

“small mocha, double chocolate, to go.”

Sans allowed himself a glance at the table, watching as Red talked with the others. He looked serious, and Sans wondered what they were talking about.

Red shifted and Sans saw a hint of the red of Pap’s scarf. He looked away, focusing on the menu board, hoping he hadn’t been caught staring.

Papyrus.

He wasn’t going to be happy that Sans was out with Red. Again.

He was supposed to be finding a job.

(a job Sans was increasingly thinking he wasn’t going to find.)

“small mocha, double chocolate, to go.”

A solitary night job was one thing. Finding a solitary day job was futile. The few places that had even bothered to call him back hadn’t had positions open that were away from … people. Cashiering and waitstaff jobs were plentiful. Jobs that limited his outside contact were few.

He hadn’t even bothered mentioning the callbacks to Papyrus.

He pulled his wallet from his pocket, counting out the G for two drinks so he wasn’t doing it at the counter. He left Red’s wallet where it was. He had been saving up, wanting to repay Red for his generosity.

He was able to pay.

He wanted to.

“Hello! Welcome to The Parlor,” the girl behind the register said. A cat monster, pale fur and (appropriately) a Cheshire grin. “What can I get you?”

“Uh … ” Sans stuttered as he forgot how to talk for a moment. He shook his head, trying to clear it. “Two small mochas. Double chocolate. To go. Please.”

“Certainly!” Cheshire smiled. She grabbed two small cups and a pen. “And your name?”

The girl misheard, or he mumbled too much, a mistake Sans only caught when he watched her hand the cups to a coworker.

SANDS

He chuckled, knowing there was some rite of passage to having a barista spell your name wrong. He wandered over to the pickup window, trying to think of a good pun or joke to use with it.

He wondered if he could make Red laugh.

—Red—

Halfway back to the table, Red lost his nerve. He let go of Mutt’s collar and approached the table with a small wave.

His off hand was clenched tightly deep in his pocket.

“didn’t expect t’ see yeh all here,” he said. He grunted as Mutt leaned on him again, arms crossed over his head. He shoved at the taller skeleton, but Mutt seemed determined to annoy him.

“WE DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE YOU, EITHER!” Blue said with a frown. “YOU HAVEN’T BEEN AROUND MUCH.”

“yeah,” Stretch agreed. He leaned back, balancing precariously as he sipped on his coffee. “when was the last poker night? must’ve been at least a month ago. feels like it’s been more’n that.”

Papyrus was looking toward the registers, expression and demeanor neutral.

“been busy,” Red said with a shrug, desperately hoping no one asked for particulars.

“SO HAS EDGE,” Blue said as his frown deepened. He pointed accusingly at his alternate, who hadn’t stopped looking through the ledger in front of him. “YOU’RE STARTING TO BE AS BAD AS BLACK!”

“IT IS BECOMING A PROBLEM,” Papyrus agreed as he focused back on the conversation, turning his frown to the coffee mug in front of him. “I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO DISCUSS PUZZLE TECHNIQUES IN AGES.”

“I COULD TALK TO YOU ABOUT PUZZLE DESIGN!” Blue argued, eyes bright, excited by the idea.

“AND IF I WANT TO TALK ABOUT PUZZLES THAT CAN BE SOLVED WITH WIT ALONE, I WILL TALK TO YOU IMMEDIATELY,” Papyrus said with a bright smile.

Pride soothed, Blue returned the smile. He jumped when his phone began to vibrate in his pocket.

“OH! STARS,” he said as he pulled it out to silence it. “I HADN’T REALIZED HOW LATE IT WAS. PAPYRUS? STRETCH? WE SHOULD GET READY TO GO. THE MOVIE IS STARTING SOON!”

“THEN WE SHOULD LEAVE POSTHASTE!” Papyrus said, standing and pulling a thick coat around his shoulders.

“WE CAN AT LEAST SAY OUR ‘GOODBYES,’ PAPYRUS,” Blue said with a laugh. “WE’RE NOT GOING TO MISS ANYTHING.”

“TO BE GREAT ONE MUST ALWAYS ARRIVE AT LEAST FIFTEEN MINUTES EARLY. NOT A MOMENT SOONER, NOR LATER!” Papyrus secured his scarf with a flourish.

Blue frowned, glancing toward the registers.

“PAPYRUS, ARE YOU SURE YOU DON’T WANT TO SAY ‘HI’ TO SA - “

“STRETCH! THE CINEMA ON FOURTH STREET, IF YOU WOULD?” Papyrus said sharply, making everyone jump. He blushed, bowing his head. “I’M SORRY. I DO NOT WISH TO MISS THE PREVIEWS.”

“don’t worry about it,” Stretch said as he patted Papyrus’ shoulder. He raised his hand in a wave. “see ya later, red. mutt.” He gave the latter a fist bump. Then he waved a hand in front of Black’s face before saying, “black.”

Before he could respond, Stretch had vanished with Blue and Papyrus.

Black scowled at the empty spot they left, the expression quickly deepening with rage.

“THEY DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES!”

Mutt laughed as he wandered around to take a seat next to his brother.

“they were runnin’ late for their show, bro. it’s not like you’ve never left a mess before. remember at … was it breadbasket?”

“HOW WAS I TO KNOW?!” Black responded, defensive and sharp. He hid behind his ledger, only succeeding in making Mutt laugh harder. “THE HUMAN WAITSTAFF HAD BUSSED TABLES NEAR US! I THOUGHT IT WAS PART OF THE OFFERED SERVICES!”

“nowhere that has ya self-serve drinks is gonna bus your tables for you, bro,” Mutt said as his chuckles died down. He wiped at an eye socket with his sleeve.

Red glanced around, checking to see how annoyed the other patrons of the café were at the table’s antics.

He didn’t particularly want to get banned from The Parlor because of the Swapfells.

Sans was leaning against the pick up counter, staring at the floor.

“so, red,” Mutt asked in a low drawl. He was circling the rim of his mug with a finger, leaning lazily on his other hand. His teeth were pulled up in a calculating grin. “whatcha doin’ with sansy?”

“gettin’ coffee,” Red shrugged, “same as you.”

“huh,” Mutt said, sitting up straighter. “i thought yer little ‘date’ happened a month ago?” he frowned. “i didn’t think you’d keep leadin’ him on like this. seems a bit cruel, doncha think?”

“i ain’t leadin’ him nowhere,” Red said, dismissing the accusation.

Mutt looked up, meeting Red’s eyelights. There was a glimmer of something predatory in his eye.

“don’t tell me you caught feelings for him!”

Red glanced behind him, checking that Sans wasn’t coming up to the table. He didn’t want to get caught in some liar-revealed sitcom trope.

Sans was where he’d been the last time Red had checked. Staring at the floor and waiting on their drinks.

“there’s somethin’ weird about him,” Red said as he turned back toward the other two. “i’m tryin’ t’ figure out what it is.”

Mutt frowned, and Black looked up with a raised brow.

“what’s there t’ figure out?” Mutt scoffed with a roll of his eyelights. “papyrus doesn’t like him. pa-py-rus. he likes everyone!”

Red shrugged, unable to do more. He didn’t have time to detail out all the inconsistencies between expectation and reality.

He wasn’t sure how to explain that Sans … didn’t seem to be a bad guy.

That Papyrus might be … wrong.

“there’s somethin’ weird,” Red said, shrugging again as he turned away, waving at the Swapfell brothers over his shoulder. “and i’m gonna figure out what.”

*Aww, sad boi hours are back again. However, this is something that can be taken as really sweet in its own way, knowing that they wanted to go! I’ll still tag it for sad boi hours, though.

(Also this is super heckin late anD I SHOULD NOT BE A ROLE MODEL WHAT)

SF Sans/Black: He knows right from the get-go that you are positively buzzing with energy, getting ready for this recital. It was basically all you could talk about for a long time, and Black wanted to see you perform for almost as long. However, as he works with some reasonably sensitive information, and with some rather influential people, there are times when his schedule will change abruptly. You can’t really do much about it, but Black’s going to try his best to keep your spirits up. If there’s anything he can do, especially once you tell him that you wanted to do this for him, he’s going to do it. If he can schedule a meeting a day sooner or a day later, Black will pull any strings he’s got to make sure that he can go to your recital. If he can manage it, you’ll see him sitting in the front row of the audience, beaming up at you with a small smile the whole time.

“I, OF COURSE, WAS WORRIED THAT I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT IN TIME FOR THE RECITAL, BUT THE MEETING FINISHED EARLY! SO HERE I AM. A WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE, BY THE WAY.”

SF Papyrus/Rus: If there’s something you’re going to be putting on, whether it’s a recital or a play, he wants to be there. Rus isn’t going to let many things get in the way of seeing his honorary sibling do something they love to do. The only possibility that could stop him would be if something catastrophic were to happen, and, unlucky you, it does. While Rus was trying to make you something special for the end of your performance, the oven catches fire, and he has to call the fire department. Both of you are now upset in that he can’t make it as he had to stay behind and make sure that the house isn’t going to crumble under the charred wood and material. You’re very upset at this, but Rus promises that as soon as he can, he’ll be coming to see you perform. It takes almost the entirety of the recital, but he finally shows up, just in time to watch your part.

“you really think i would just leave you hangin’ on tonight of all nights? ‘course not, i gotta see my ‘lil sib perform in their show, it’s my duty as your older brother, isn’t it? you did great, though.”

US Sans/Blue: As soon as he catches wind that you’ve got any kind of performance going on, Blue is ready to go! He even goes so far as to help be a part of the set-up/tear-down crew, if they need extra hands. There is hardly a single thing that would be untouched by him, simply because he wants to be able to be there to support you! The only downside is when the committee chair, who was supposed to be in charge of safety, fails to see something falling, Blue’s too much of a sucker for the sacrificial save. He pushes them to safety, and before he can shortcut away, he’s underneath a hefty stack of chairs. Blue will be okay after a few hours, but the recital is that night, and you had so looked forward to him being there. No matter what the doctor says about it, he’s going to be at that recital, even if it’s in a wheelchair, a small bouquet of flowers ready for you.

“THAT WAS INCREDIBLE, SIBLING!! I QUITE ENJOYED THE PERFORMANCE YOU AND THE OTHERS PUT ON! HM? OH, I AM FINE, JUST DON’T HUG ME TOO HARD, MWEH HEH HEH!”

US Papyrus/Stretch: As much as this skeleton is more neutral about the arts, there is no way that your recital is going to be missed. Stretch may not be super inclined to see all sorts of other performances, as he mostly sleeps through them, but for you? He’s going to take as many naps as possible before everyone gets started to see you. That plan backfires miserably when he has to go to work and stays up much later than he intended to. Now Stretch’s exhausted, unable to even see straight, and you’re really upset that he might sleep through the whole thing. You eventually have to go to the recital, picked up by one of your friends, and he’s going to take a quick nap, with his loudest alarm ready to wake him. Stretch almost doesn’t make it in time, but teleportation is a beautiful thing for circumventing traffic and other such roadblocks.

“of course i’m here, why in toriel’s name would i miss something like this? it’s important to you, so of course, it’s going to be important to me. there would be nothing keeping me from this.”

Can you do a scenerio where the skeleton is eating a meal the human made for them, mentioning that it's pretty salty and the human blushing and saying that in their family it's said that a person who makes salty meals is in love? With fs Papyrus, us Sans, ht bros and hs bros?

That’s actually a pretty interesting, yet adorable concept.

Rus (Fellswap Papyrus)- Honestly he doesn’t mind how salty it was, though out of curiosity, he had asked them if they added too much salt by accident, not that he was complaining. When the human confesses that people in their family tend to make meals salty when they’re in love, he might be a bit confused about it at first, wondering why, and who the human was interested in, it may take a bit longer for him to get it. And once he gets it, his skull is covered in blush. 

Blue (Underswap Sans)- He flinches at how salty it is, his smile wavers as he ask if they accidentally put too much salt in it, though once he learns the reason, he’s excited, though concerned. Perhaps he can help his friend start a new food tradition to show that they love someone, because he’s immediately concerned for those who might date someone from their family that strictly can’t have too much salt. Though otherwise, he finds this sweet!

Paprika (Horrortale Papyrus)- He can immediately tell that they had put in too much salt in the food, and when he casually brings it up, and hearing their reason, a blush burns his skull, oh, oh my! This human loved him? Well, he’ll need to return the gesture, surely! His future s/o should look out for when he makes them their favorite food too often. 

Sinister (Horrortale Sans)- He’ll eat it without mentioning anything, food is food, so he doesn’t care if its off. It may take a bit more for him to figure out why his friend made the food much saltier then they would normally make. He just loves whatever they make him, so he doesn’t complain. He probably needs to be given multiple hints as to why the food is made saltier then its supposed to. 

Clove (Horrorswap Sans)- He takes a few bits, recognizing that there is a bit too much of one ingredient. He will mention it to his friend, with a light smile as he tells them that next time they can cook together so that this doesn’t happen again. Though when the true reason on why its salty comes out, he’s actually shocked, before a grin appears and he engulfs his friend in a hug. They’re so sweet!

Dread (Horrorswap Papyrus)- Not too sure how they became friends with this loner, but yet, here he is, ready to eat what his friend had made for him. He could immediately tell that its salty, though doesn’t mention anything until after a meal, his friend went through so much trouble for him, its the least he can do. He will end up being shocked with what they confess, he quickly looks to them to see if they’re lying, he’s half convinced that they’re lying, that this was all just some cruel joke. But once he realizes that they really do love him, a nervous chuckle would escape him, questioning if they really want to be with someone like him, he wasn’t exactly the easiest person to be around, he was paranoid and and was very insistent on personal space. Huh, they really love him...

Undertale In Retrospect

Written on September 13.

So, in two days, Undertale’s second anniversary arrives. However, in one day, I’ll begin playing Hiveswap, good or bad, to 100% completion, so I figured I should take this time, where I’ve finished my homework for the next five days, to just get some things out about Undertale, it’s fandom, and other related topics. Spoilers will follow.

First off, is Undertale the Best. Game. Ever? Probably not, but then I wouldn’t say OoT fits the bill, either. Honestly, in terms of personal preference, for me at least, Undertale beats every game it went up against in that “contest”. Of course, something like this is always going to be extremely subjective-I mean, one of the games up for the title was Mass Effect 3. But, at the end of the day, that was more of a popularity contest than anything else, so Undertale was probably always going to win.

I’ve heard so many things about the Undertale “fandom”. About how they’re cringe inducing, or obsessive, and all that nonsense. I’ll admit, my first major experience with fandom was Homestuck, so maybe I’m not the best judge. 

However, when I look at the UT fanbase, I see some genuinely impressive stuff! Fanfics, fan art, fan music, fan GAMES, an attempt to work it’s various AU’s into a cohesive multiverse, analysis bordering on genius, and as I may have brought up in previous posts, A GODDAMN ONLINE MUSICAL USING JUST THE GAME’S SOUNDTRACK AND LYRICISTS.

You can say what you want about fandom, but they put one hell of a lot of passion into their work.

This game looks amazing, okay? Like, I get if the whole pixel-art aesthetic is a turn-off for you, but the use of colors, the little details, those animations, THE GODDAMN CHARACTERS! Temmie, Toby, anyone else who worked on the visuals for it. Everyone knocked it clear out of the park!

The music. Do I even have to say anything? Toby Fox was basically a musician by trade before this game, and he made every single track in this game. Hell, even the music that never actually gets used at any point in the game is god damn glorious. What is your secret, Dog Man? I MUST KNOW!

I love how, just because of how this game works, we know the personality of almost every monster we fight, and even a large number who we don’t. Like, I know that Ice Cap acts like a narcissist when they have their hat on, but all their self-worth is tied up in that hat, and without it they get extremely depressed. All that detail, for an enemy most players might not even remember after five minutes in Waterfall.

So, does anyone else find it weird how, outside of the Dreemurr family, the character we learn the most about, more than the skelebros, the ghost cousins, or the spear fish...is Alphys? Like, no joke, she first shows up in the second-to-last area in the game, and most of her initial personality is just “Self-concious Anime Fangirl”, yet we know more about her than we do the protagonist, the implicit antagonist, and the most two reoccurring characters COMBINED. We know all her personality traits, why she’s so self-conscious, what her fears and obsessions are, and even her freaking SEXUALITY by the end of the game! Legitimately, outside of boss monsters and humans, she is THE most important character in the story...and her first meeting with you is basically her admitting to stalking you and flat-out lying to your face. How.

So, here’s a thought process that must have occurred to Mr. Fox while writing the story:

“So, we have six characters, the previous humans, who went through the underground and died between “The Fallen Human” and Frisk. Now, because they appear to save Frisk in the neutral ending, we need a way to communicate their personalities to the player. But how?

“Well, we could start with their items. You find them through the underground, they give little hints, and- OH! Those items could be used in the boss fight! Yes, that shows who they belonged to, and they could be used in weird ways, like the frying pan and the- yes, that’s great! But there’s only so much we can convey through that...

“Oooh! What if each human had a different trait? So, like, Determination is the one for our two main humans, but then each other human has a trait - oh, and they can be color coded, that would be some good shorthand, and since we already have some colored attacks, and then- Perfect! But how do we communicate those traits to the player in a non-obtrusive, easy to understand way?

“...mini-golf with a snowball.”

The fandom sure did have a fascination with those bone-bros, huh? I can’t really blame them. Like I said, they’re the two most recurring characters throughout the game, and even the advertising/marketing played them up. Still, considering how shining all of the characters are, it is pretty disappointing how many of them get neglected in favor of Sans and Papyrus. Even in the AU’s, so many are based solely around, “Hey, let’s do this weird thing to the Skeletons, and maybe the Dreemurrs too, I guess.” Like, I like UnderSwap (even if the copy-and-paste aspect annoys me a bit), but the only characters to ever get any focus that I’ve seen are those two. Seriously, what about the other changes that would happen in this universe? Alphys being head of the royal guard, instead of a scientist? Undyne creating the Amalgamates instead of Alphys? I just don’t get it. “Inverted Fates” is a little better at this, from what I’ve seen, but it’s just disappointing that the more popular template so infrequently has any meat to it.

A while back, I found a reddit post, basically asking for Undertale fandom pet peeves. Some of it was little stuff, (Flowey being drawn with the wrong number of petals,  Sans with human proportions, etc.) some was non-canon but kinda necessary (Considering how important Gaster is to Sans’ backstory and how little about him is established in canon, you’re gonna need to draw on fanon about him at some point), but one that really irritated me (and a lot of commenters) was on person who listed this as a pet peeve:

Like, I get that he didn’t kill the human just for killing his brother, but like... what the hell? He has all stats of 1, he might be working off of Karma to even hurt players, and, because of Flowey’s shenanigans, he knows everything is more than likely going to be reset anyways! Plus, considering in a NM or Geno run, Papyrus’s last words were about how you could still be good, I would make a pretty safe bet he ASKED Sans to spare the human before he died.

Also, freaking rude?

I love this game more than certain relatives of mine. That’s not really a compliment, though. My uncle is a dick.

All in all, I love this game, I love it’s fandom, I may or may not have an AU fan game I’d make if I had any programming, artistic, musical, or social skills, and I can’t wait for what’s next for Toby “Radiation” Fox. Though, the day this gets published, some big patch that adds, like, an Annoying Dog boss fight and twenty more Temmies has probably just dropped, so, whatever. Catch y’all when I finish HS Act 1!
