The State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II

A sad day but a glorious farewell to our Queen

A quieter moment on Thursday under cloudy skies

From Thursday last week we were in London, staying right by Potters Fields and Tower Bridge, across from the Tower of London. The city is absolutely crammed with people from all around the world - so many visitors who have come to pay final respects to the late Queen and to feel a part of history.

The queue along the riverbank to visit the lying in state at Westminster Hall, extended a long way past this point. At one point there was a queue to join the queue - how very British. It had its own weather forecast, it forged new friendships and brought out the good in people and now the queue has its own Wikipedia entry. I wish she’d been here to see the support and the outpouring of love and respect shown by so many, not least her only daughter.

Today we��re home from a much happier family event and the state funeral has taken place. Everything from the music, the troops, the horses and the people involved in all the ceremonial was conducted beautifully and even the weather behaved.

The royal standards being lowered, the pony and corgis waiting for their mistress and the symbols of office being removed from the coffin, were all so poignant that I feel drained, so can’t imagine how her family are feeling now.

The TV coverage ended with the Queen herself using this ancient Aboriginal proverb in one of her speeches, it’s very fitting

And So It Goes

Today we leave Ostuni to return home, to London, for the last time.

I moved to London in February 2001. Apart from studying and working in the US in 1988/89, I had lived all my life in Scotland.

I’m ready to leave London. But don’t get me wrong. London has been good to me. I have lived, and loved, in London. I got married in London.

I’ve performed with @LdnGMC for over 13 years. I’ve shared the stage with Elton John, recorded an album with Mark Ronson, performed in front of Michael Caine, Calvin Harris, Tracey Emin and Sir Ian, to name but a few. I’ve even sung the national anthem to HMQueen.

I’ve been to the theatre over 500 times. Culturally London has been a wonderful place to live, London 2012 being only one of the highlights.

London has enabled me to retire at 50, and now it is time to move on.

One of the first things to do on my return to London will be to give my notice. To announce my retirement. To negotiate my own personal Brexit (I’m hoping that will be less than the 3 month notice period I have, given that I will be “homeless” in just over 4 weeks).

Then it will be full steam ahead and time to organise the next stage of my life…

One of my favourite “extreme alterations” was taking this silk dress which had been made when Megan was 18 and turning it into a dress fit for a highland ball. We switched out the bold blue contrast bands for a softer grey-blue and changed up the neckline, using a vintage portrait of HM the Queen as inspiration.
