The JA books and subsequent woobification of padawan Obi-Wan have people overlooking a key fact, which is the innate ability of all 14 yr olds to immediately lock onto your deepest insecurities and fucking eviscerate you. You look at TCW Obi-Wan's bitchiness and tell me he did not have this ability but dialled up to 11 cause he's also a psychic force-sensitive.

I fully believe padawan Obi-Wan was terrorising Qui-Gon, the reason that man's always running ahead and leaving his padawan behind is because he's avoiding having to explain his life choices to the galaxy's most judgemental teenager. Initiate Obi-Wan is aggressive, padawan Obi-Wan is passive-aggressive.

believe it or not, I had these doodled before the update! Granted, bp was colored slightly different than now, but it's easy to fix that with pixels~! Frankly my ideas on how my shining grandpapa Grand Reef haven't changed much! In fact, I think the conformation that bp has (or had) sisters helps me! All that really changed is that merbabies leave the reef at a certain age to go with their pod of siblings to their kingdom and be a good citizen or whatnot-

Back at it again with another theory: What if Lucanis’ betrayal wasn’t a betrayal at all?

(obviously, spoilers below the cut)

During The Wigmaker Job, we have some dialogue between Illario and Lucanis about their position within both the Crows and the Dellamorte family. Illario wants Caterina to step down so he can take the coveted First Talon spot. Lucanis reassures him that his time is coming, to which Illario makes a snide comment about whether his cousin would ever go against their grandmother’s wishes. When they continue the conversation after the job, Illario states that Lucanis is the potential heir, that he’s her favorite, and that he’s unlikely to say no to her. Lucanis doesn’t argue, only insists that he doesn’t want to be First Talon, and that he hopes she’ll see reason before that. It’s mentioned again in Eight Little Talons - Caterina favors Lucanis. It’s well-known enough among the Crows that Viago and Teia discuss it in front of her (not on purpose, but she doesn’t deny it). He’s her prodigy through and through.

In the opening scene for the Lucanis quest in Veilguard, Caterina is poised, as you’d expect of the First Talon. She’s certain that the body they buried wasn’t her grandson, that it had been altered with blood magic. She doesn’t pose it as a theory, though: she poses it as a fact. It could, of course, merely be her confidence, but there’s another very unusual aspect to the scene – everyone else discusses how Lucanis was clearly betrayed, that someone must have sold him out in order for the Venatori to capture him. Caterina is the only one in that room who never speaks on it. She doesn’t ask for justice, doesn’t mention vengeance, never acknowledges that her grandson was sold out by someone he trusted – perhaps because he wasn’t. 

What if, when Caterina comes to him with a plan, with an impossible request, he’s still her favorite prodigal grandchild, and he still does whatever she asks? She’s had him tortured before as a child, has tortured and starved and beaten him herself before, because it makes him stronger and more resistant to it in the future. He says in The Wigmaker Job that he used to hate her for it, but now he understands. He justifies it. All Crows justify it, because they have to - if they don’t, then the cruelty wasn’t for survival’s sake, and their suffering meant nothing. Perhaps he doesn’t even question it. When Caterina tells him that she has a job for him, he takes it. 

What if the contract has a caveat? Sure, Calivan must die by his hand by the end of it, a little treat for a job well done, but what if his primary mission is reconnaissance, is discovery? The Venatori are using blood magic to torture and corrupt prisoners. It would behoove the Crows to find out what it entails and how to resist it, before it’s turned back on them. It would have to be someone so deeply, unabashedly loyal to her that when she asked them to infiltrate a Venatori prison, expecting torture at best, their own death at worst, they’d take the job anyway, no questions asked - someone Caterina can trust, certainly, but also someone who has never once said no to her.

And Lucanis has always been a loyal grandson.

So what do we think the Bright queen thinks Ashton actually… Is? Because I have thoughts.

I Think she Suspects him of being more then he says he is, “The one you call Ashton” “Who or what they are.” but as we all know, Ashton can’t lie for shit. And the bright queen has noticed his horrid charisma. So I personally believe she thinks he’s more then he says he is, But even he doesn’t know it yet.

She knows he’s not a Beacon. Not in the traditional sense. Both Allura and Essek figured that out and The Bright queen has centuries more of experience with these devices. We know she is incredibly tuned into dunamancy (She noticed nott using the mote of possibility) she was already turning to look at Ashton before he took the initiative and showed it off. She also said to Ashton “I do not know what you hold inside either. But there are signatures of power that are familiar and intriguing.” I honestly see little reason for her to lie to him. The only possible way is if she’s trying to tempt them to come to the dynasty but ashton is so obviously already tempted that she doesn’t have to.

I definitely believe she Thinks of Ashton as some form of Gift from the Luxon in one way or another. Possibly she believes them a champion or Vessel, the luxon experiencing the world through this Genasi. I’m not entirely sure. But I do believe she sees it as a good thing. “It's hard to describe, but I feel like I trust them” is what she told the group when she saw the dunamantic cluster that is ashton. And when she was convincing chetney to act as spy for her, she started with “You might yet be a bright spot in our future and history”.

btw I in no way think she wants them dead. If she wanted him dead she could have done it by now. And I don't think she wants to strap them to a table and dissect them. Her dissection will probably come in the form of an interrogation. She 100% wants him to find the luxon and become their faithful, and begin working with her on its reassembly. She told him she wants to show him something, if he doesn't find it first. And if he does, wants to "compare notes."

And of course we’ve already heard she wants them under the Dynasty’s control. I am unsure what she means and her intentions with asking Chetney for a “Means” Of bringing them under the Dynasty’s control. Like is she looking for a weakness? a weapon? a convincing argument? Who knows. I don’t think she wants them harmed unless she deems them a danger to her people and culture. And of this latest episode, I think she believes the exact opposite.

Either way, The bright queen wants to collect this crystal. To what extent and why is interesting.

Something I noticed in the post-bite dialogues

It's interesting how the option to tell Astarion that you don't mind him feeding on you if you give your permission first not only gives no approval, but Astarion also sounds so...fake in his enthusiasm. He isn't surprised, relieved, or intrigued. He is almost condescending. Ah yes, of coooourse. He is as insincere as when he was lying through his teeth about "the spirit of cooperation and mutual trust" when the group gathered to react to his vampire reveal.

Meanwhile agreeing with him on his "no innocents, enemies only" stance dons +5 approval, and he is actually pleased. Good talk.

I think, this difference in response is based on the real reason why he decided to taste Tav's blood in the first place. As we know, it wasn't hunger. It was testing his limits and checking whether he was truly free from Cazador's influence. So, he doesn't really need to feed from Tav anymore - he got his answer. It was the only thing he was after, and he is truly grateful Tav let him have it. He also had time to think his feeding policy through ("No innocents. You have my word.") because he anticipated Tav asking him about his new feeding habits. If Tav has no objections, Astarion is actually happy about it. He is accepted without prejudice and well...relieved it all went rather smoothly.

But if Tav says he can have their blood when they give their permission leaves him (at least initially) unimpressed and even rubs him the wrong way as he still revels in not needing permission to drink the blood of thinking creatures. Of course, Tav doesn't know that. They're just either being too kind for their own good (who would willingly endure the feeling of their life force seeping away and waking up with a sore neck every morning?) or they're actually a little freak, and they liked it. Astarion isn't exactly humored by the latter (as we see from Araj, he isn't happy about people romanticizing his vampiric side), but he can use that fetish to his advantage. Also, a free and willing meal isn't something he would refuse. That also explains his almost flirty responses whenever Tav tells him "You can feed on me tonight". He found his seduction angle and he is going for it.

Thing is, shits gonna have to get worse before it gets better. We will have to see either Jean or Jeremy get beaten to a bloody pulp before we finally see Jean snap.

I’m just glad when he does break, all those years of pent up rage will make whoever it is at fault regret the day they were born. He will rise like a hound out of hell and he will drag them, kicking and screaming, into the flames that burnt him all those times before.

He’s going to burn the house down.
