Wer weiss?

The SS Cap Arcona and SS Wilhelm Gustloff. Probably the two worst maritime disasters in World War II, but no one ever talks about them. Here they are docked side by side.

okay now I wanna know what you ARE writing that essay on lol! anything half as fun as marauders fandom history?
I’m writing about the Wilhelm Gustloff. Its a German military transport ship in the 1940s that on January 30 1945 (80 years ago as of a couple weeks ago) sunk due to torpedoes from a Soviet submarine.
The Wilhelm Gustloff was transporting civilians and some military personnel from Poland as the red army invaded during ww2 and when it sunk. It carried around 7,000 - 10,000 people on board. The ships capacity was under 1,500 plus crew so around 1,900 people.
Because of the crowds and how fast it sank (under an hour) around 6,000 to 9,600 people died when it sank and only around 1,250 people survived.
This in comparison to the titanics 1,500 deaths, The Wilhelm Gustloff is around 6 times more deadly than the titanic. But no one knows about it. This is largely because the Germans tried its hardest to bury this information and all records The Wilhelm Gustloff, which is also why our estimated records of how many people died and were on the ship is so large.
More people died in the titanic than survived on The Wilhelm Gustloff. Which is insane and NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT.
This has actually been a small hyperfixation for me since I was in middle school and read Ruta Sepetys, Salt To The Sea, which is a historical fiction of the tragedy. Which I strongly encourage you to read if this sounds at all interesting to you. However the ending is now slightly spoiled lol.
So as it’s still a hyperfixation, I would say for me, yes🤭 it is as interesting as the marauders fandom history.

Temptation to run a poll tournament about HISTORICAL SHIP(wreck)S butting up against the fact that like 10 people on this website would give a single shit and so all my faves would win because I'd be the only wretched vote >:y
Like yes hello random tumblr user what do you think of the SS America (1940) and how would you say it compares to the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, by your own metrics? This is a big one, winner goes up against the Endurance (1912)!
#only thing remotely similar ive seen has been the WW1 uniform poll!#which featured a lot of obscure entrants and fun historical blurbs about each one#(hello pollrunner i know we are mutuals)#but at least that was based on funky aesthetics so had some outside appeal even for people who aren't#just like. really into an ultraspecific historical topic. v_v#trick question the mv wilhelm gustloff was a humanitarian tragedy while the other two were unmanned at time of sinking!!!

Review: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys My rating: 5 of 5 stars After reading Lily’s Promise about World War Two atrocities, I wasn’t sure I could get through another. But this seemed to be a different take. And it was written as a Young Adult novel. So, I was curious. Then I was surprised. Jorjeana Marie (Narrator), Will Damron (Narrator), Cassandra Morris (Narrator), and Michael Crouch (Narrator) all…

Hello, hello, it's certainly been a while! I'm sorry about that. I know I said I'd send random asks but I got caught up in some stuff.
I've got some bookish updates though! I just finished Salt to the Sea and wept by the end. It's weird because I was doing so good but the last 30 pages hit me like a bus! I just started crying all of a sudden. Let me tell ya, it's so hard to read when you're crying 😂 Plus, every time I cry (no matter the reason) I always take my glasses off because I don't want them to get wet, so that really doesn't help with reading lol.
It was a really good book though and I'm so glad I finally got around to it. It's a rough and emotional one though, since it's centered around war and one of the greatest shipwrecks, Wilhelm Gustloff. I'm not sure if you'd like it or not because it's historical fiction.
Now that I'm done my physical book, I'm going to rent the audiobook for the second book of the Lady Sherlock series, since my library has that available. I might take a couple days before reading that though, just to calm my emotions a bit, you know? It's been a while since I've wept like that while reading lol.
Enough on my end. How are you doing lately? I saw on your other blog you were busy for a while. I hope things have settled down and nothing stressful is happening. You have my well wishes.
-Book Anon
Book Anon, hi! It’s good to hear from you! I was actually just thinking about you so your timing is impeccable.
I am rather picky about historical fiction, but I must admit you certainly have me intrigued. I’ve saved a screenshot of the book name so I can look into it later. I’ve got so many on my TBR list anyway, so it will be some time before I will ever read it anyway. But I will definitely look into it.
Ohhhh you’re about to start book 2? That’s exciting! I hope you enjoy this one too!
Keep me posted if you’d like and thank you for the update! 💜

Tumblr, now is your chance to solve one of the great mysteries of our time. Generations of investigators, journalists, intelligence agencies, treasure hunters, and adventurers couldn't do it, but with the power of the poll feature, we can.
If you don't know what the Amber Room is, Wikipedia is a good start
#i purposefully didnt include the most likely answer btw#(destroyed when the red army burned königsberg palace)#if youre american or smth i want you to understand how important this is to us. this is THE myth to us#so. what do you think?

Hello there lovely, was wondering what an ocean liner was and realized it's a ship! It's actually quite interesting and if you were ever in the mood and time for it, you can tell us! no rushing or forces at all! I'm sure most of us would love to hear more about it, learning new things is a great way to expand your knowledge and ships are really interesting but quite complex, I tend to know the sunken ones a lot, mainly because I wondered what happened and it leaves me a certain type of feel? Perhaps it's grief and curiosity. Nevertheless, have an awesome day! Take care of yourself as always. ♡
—🌊
do you have an hour?
I can tell you some of my favorite knowledge about ocean liners (THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN DONE BEFORE, so no Violet Jessop or Titanic theories) until a get a story in progress lmao
— (according to Oceanliner Designs' Youtube video) After WW1, when America and Britain lost ships due to german forces, they were given the Imperator class as compensation, but they were so petty as not to give the blueprints for one of the ships (said that they could buy them for 5 million dollars) so a pair of men measured the ENTIRETY of the ship, inside and outside, millimeter for millimeter. It took 2 years.
— When the german liner Imperator was built, they were so persistant on making it longer than the british liner Aquitania that was also being built at the same time, so they installed a big golden eagle at the bow to make it just a few centimeters longer than Aquitania ... only to realize that Aquitania was never supposed to be longer, so they installed the ugly eagle for no reason
— (this is a rumour, i'm not sure that it is true) but during WW2, a certain german leader who got butthurt over not getting into art school (guess who) said that the one that could sink the Queen Mary would get 250 000 dollars, but no one could catch the Grey Ghost (QM's nickname)
— During WW1, a german ship called Cap Trafalgar wanted to infiltrate Britain, so they disguised themselves as the british ship Carmania ... only to meet Carmania on the way to England and get sunk by the ones they disguised themselves as.
— Britannic sank in 55 minutes, Lusitania sank in 18 minutes and Impress of Ireland sank in just 14 minutes
— The man who plays JJ Astor in the Titanic movie was a survivor of the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster, which is the deadliest sinking in the history with over 9000 deaths in one night. He had trouble filming the water scenes in the movie because it reminded him of the WG disaster.
— There was a ship to be named RMMV Oceanic which never got completed because White Star Line went bankrupt, which original designs looked like an addition to the Olympic class, but with a cruise-styled stern. Here you can see the first design vs the second design
These were some that I could come up with for the moment, but I know that there are so many more! Please let me know if you want to know more lmao

I don't know if this is the average experience for people born just after WW2, but I learned more about the experiences pops have had.
He had coworkers that saw the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, he knew someone that broke down in tears after getting too much booze in him at his retirement party where he bawled his eyes out about having to scuttle a German submarine that he was the officer of but the crew was still in the boat, and he had instructors that were veterans of the Finnish Continuation War... and I just learned yesterday he worked opposite of a man that was a mercenary on the Belgian side of the Congo Crises of the 1960's.
Shit be whack.

ss Wilhelm Gustloff
On January 30, 1945, the Wilhelm Gustloff was traveling through the Baltic sea carrying between 7,000 and 10,000 people consisting of her crew, wounded soldiers and refugees trying to escape the allied occupation, she was discovered by the soviet sub S-13 and was hit with three torpedoes on her port side, the pool above was one of the areas hit, unfortunately it was being used as the nurse's sleeping quarters and only a few of the nurses survived, as she sank the crew tried lowering the lifeboats but due to the blizzard outside ice had frozen over the lowering gear, hindering her ability to save the passengers, the ship then began to roll on to her portside trapping people in her promenades, within an hour the Wilhelm Gustloff was gone taking 9,000+ people with her

My Proposed Idea for Season 10 of The Genie Team
Last year, I made a post about my proposal idea for the 10th season of @grantgfan’s flagship series; “The Genie Team”. Where that proposed idea was about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals appearing around the world.
Well, recently, I changed my proposed idea to where a b-plot for season 10 of The Genie Team revolves around the Bermuda Triangle and its mysteries.
Skull Island - This Skull Island is the 2005 Peter Jackson rendition of the island, except the island is at its original massive size (which is said to be a bit smaller than Madagascar). And all the same creatures detailed in the book “The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island” are featured, as well as some OC creatures of my own to help flesh out the island’s unique and hellish ecosystem. And the hellish ecosystems and creatures of the island (from the coasts, lowlands, wetlands, jungles, chasms and highlands) fit in with the Bermuda Triangle’s history and mysteries, especially about the region being forbidden to step foot on.
Atlantis - Atlantis here is the same as in the cult Disney classic from 2001; Atlantis The Lost Empire. And in that movie, Milo Thatch mentioned that Atlantis was on a continent somewhere in the mid Atlantic Ocean. And the Bermuda Triangle is within that region of the Atlantic. And with the entrance to the underground cave/route to the lost civilization/city of Atlantis being guarded by the Leviathan, the giant machine would be revealed to be the culprit for the mysterious disappearances of countless vessels, including the USS Cyclops, in the Bermuda Triangle.
Davy Jones’ Locker - This Locker will be the same one as seen in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”, being an endless sea stretching on and on forever. It’s where the souls of those who perished out at sea are sent to, as well as the ships that were lost and sunk, ranging from ocean liners to warships to cargo ships.
Portals - At rare and random times, portals open within the Bermuda Triangle’s boundaries, and dais portals are said to lead to alternate timelines, alternate realities, dimensions and other worlds. What’s even rarer is that anything form those portals could come through and enter this reality and timeline.
Evil Mermaids/Sirens - Unlike normal mermaids like Ariel, her sisters and King Triton… these mermaids are evil and are more akin to actual mermaids, which are evil, feast on humans and are often called Sirens. And these evil mermaids can reach far beyond the Bermuda Triangle and have seen many ship disasters over the centuries, including the sinking of the RMS Titanic, MV Wilhelm Gustloff, MS Estonia, etc…. Though these evil mermaids always watched from the shadows and claimed the corpses after the survivors and rescuers had left, so that these evil mermaids could keep their existence a secret.
Now I’ll be going into deeper detail about these three things in future posts, so start tuned for that. This post is to help introduce my proposed idea for season 10 of The Genie Team.

My mother insisted the best way to get rid of guests is to play "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but that would definitely get result in me sitting on your couch for a further 2 hours to discuss shipwrecks. Wanna hear about the Wilhelm Gustloff?
