Temptation to run a poll tournament about HISTORICAL SHIP(wreck)S butting up against the fact that like 10 people on this website would give a single shit and so all my faves would win because I'd be the only wretched vote >:y
Like yes hello random tumblr user what do you think of the SS America (1940) and how would you say it compares to the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, by your own metrics? This is a big one, winner goes up against the Endurance (1912)!
#only thing remotely similar ive seen has been the WW1 uniform poll!#which featured a lot of obscure entrants and fun historical blurbs about each one#(hello pollrunner i know we are mutuals)#but at least that was based on funky aesthetics so had some outside appeal even for people who aren't#just like. really into an ultraspecific historical topic. v_v#trick question the mv wilhelm gustloff was a humanitarian tragedy while the other two were unmanned at time of sinking!!!

Review: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys My rating: 5 of 5 stars After reading Lily’s Promise about World War Two atrocities, I wasn’t sure I could get through another. But this seemed to be a different take. And it was written as a Young Adult novel. So, I was curious. Then I was surprised. Jorjeana Marie (Narrator), Will Damron (Narrator), Cassandra Morris (Narrator), and Michael Crouch (Narrator) all…

Hello, hello, it's certainly been a while! I'm sorry about that. I know I said I'd send random asks but I got caught up in some stuff.
I've got some bookish updates though! I just finished Salt to the Sea and wept by the end. It's weird because I was doing so good but the last 30 pages hit me like a bus! I just started crying all of a sudden. Let me tell ya, it's so hard to read when you're crying 😂 Plus, every time I cry (no matter the reason) I always take my glasses off because I don't want them to get wet, so that really doesn't help with reading lol.
It was a really good book though and I'm so glad I finally got around to it. It's a rough and emotional one though, since it's centered around war and one of the greatest shipwrecks, Wilhelm Gustloff. I'm not sure if you'd like it or not because it's historical fiction.
Now that I'm done my physical book, I'm going to rent the audiobook for the second book of the Lady Sherlock series, since my library has that available. I might take a couple days before reading that though, just to calm my emotions a bit, you know? It's been a while since I've wept like that while reading lol.
Enough on my end. How are you doing lately? I saw on your other blog you were busy for a while. I hope things have settled down and nothing stressful is happening. You have my well wishes.
-Book Anon
Book Anon, hi! It’s good to hear from you! I was actually just thinking about you so your timing is impeccable.
I am rather picky about historical fiction, but I must admit you certainly have me intrigued. I’ve saved a screenshot of the book name so I can look into it later. I’ve got so many on my TBR list anyway, so it will be some time before I will ever read it anyway. But I will definitely look into it.
Ohhhh you’re about to start book 2? That’s exciting! I hope you enjoy this one too!
Keep me posted if you’d like and thank you for the update! 💜

Tumblr, now is your chance to solve one of the great mysteries of our time. Generations of investigators, journalists, intelligence agencies, treasure hunters, and adventurers couldn't do it, but with the power of the poll feature, we can.
If you don't know what the Amber Room is, Wikipedia is a good start
#i purposefully didnt include the most likely answer btw#(destroyed when the red army burned königsberg palace)#if youre american or smth i want you to understand how important this is to us. this is THE myth to us#so. what do you think?

Hello there lovely, was wondering what an ocean liner was and realized it's a ship! It's actually quite interesting and if you were ever in the mood and time for it, you can tell us! no rushing or forces at all! I'm sure most of us would love to hear more about it, learning new things is a great way to expand your knowledge and ships are really interesting but quite complex, I tend to know the sunken ones a lot, mainly because I wondered what happened and it leaves me a certain type of feel? Perhaps it's grief and curiosity. Nevertheless, have an awesome day! Take care of yourself as always. ♡
—🌊
do you have an hour?
I can tell you some of my favorite knowledge about ocean liners (THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN DONE BEFORE, so no Violet Jessop or Titanic theories) until a get a story in progress lmao
— (according to Oceanliner Designs' Youtube video) After WW1, when America and Britain lost ships due to german forces, they were given the Imperator class as compensation, but they were so petty as not to give the blueprints for one of the ships (said that they could buy them for 5 million dollars) so a pair of men measured the ENTIRETY of the ship, inside and outside, millimeter for millimeter. It took 2 years.
— When the german liner Imperator was built, they were so persistant on making it longer than the british liner Aquitania that was also being built at the same time, so they installed a big golden eagle at the bow to make it just a few centimeters longer than Aquitania ... only to realize that Aquitania was never supposed to be longer, so they installed the ugly eagle for no reason
— (this is a rumour, i'm not sure that it is true) but during WW2, a certain german leader who got butthurt over not getting into art school (guess who) said that the one that could sink the Queen Mary would get 250 000 dollars, but no one could catch the Grey Ghost (QM's nickname)
— During WW1, a german ship called Cap Trafalgar wanted to infiltrate Britain, so they disguised themselves as the british ship Carmania ... only to meet Carmania on the way to England and get sunk by the ones they disguised themselves as.
— Britannic sank in 55 minutes, Lusitania sank in 18 minutes and Impress of Ireland sank in just 14 minutes
— The man who plays JJ Astor in the Titanic movie was a survivor of the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster, which is the deadliest sinking in the history with over 9000 deaths in one night. He had trouble filming the water scenes in the movie because it reminded him of the WG disaster.
— There was a ship to be named RMMV Oceanic which never got completed because White Star Line went bankrupt, which original designs looked like an addition to the Olympic class, but with a cruise-styled stern. Here you can see the first design vs the second design
These were some that I could come up with for the moment, but I know that there are so many more! Please let me know if you want to know more lmao

My Proposed Idea for Season 10 of The Genie Team
Last year, I made a post about my proposal idea for the 10th season of @grantgfan’s flagship series; “The Genie Team”. Where that proposed idea was about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals appearing around the world.
Well, recently, I changed my proposed idea to where a b-plot for season 10 of The Genie Team revolves around the Bermuda Triangle and its mysteries.
Skull Island - This Skull Island is the 2005 Peter Jackson rendition of the island, except the island is at its original massive size (which is said to be a bit smaller than Madagascar). And all the same creatures detailed in the book “The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island” are featured, as well as some OC creatures of my own to help flesh out the island’s unique and hellish ecosystem. And the hellish ecosystems and creatures of the island (from the coasts, lowlands, wetlands, jungles, chasms and highlands) fit in with the Bermuda Triangle’s history and mysteries, especially about the region being forbidden to step foot on.
Atlantis - Atlantis here is the same as in the cult Disney classic from 2001; Atlantis The Lost Empire. And in that movie, Milo Thatch mentioned that Atlantis was on a continent somewhere in the mid Atlantic Ocean. And the Bermuda Triangle is within that region of the Atlantic. And with the entrance to the underground cave/route to the lost civilization/city of Atlantis being guarded by the Leviathan, the giant machine would be revealed to be the culprit for the mysterious disappearances of countless vessels, including the USS Cyclops, in the Bermuda Triangle.
Davy Jones’ Locker - This Locker will be the same one as seen in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”, being an endless sea stretching on and on forever. It’s where the souls of those who perished out at sea are sent to, as well as the ships that were lost and sunk, ranging from ocean liners to warships to cargo ships.
Portals - At rare and random times, portals open within the Bermuda Triangle’s boundaries, and dais portals are said to lead to alternate timelines, alternate realities, dimensions and other worlds. What’s even rarer is that anything form those portals could come through and enter this reality and timeline.
Evil Mermaids/Sirens - Unlike normal mermaids like Ariel, her sisters and King Triton… these mermaids are evil and are more akin to actual mermaids, which are evil, feast on humans and are often called Sirens. And these evil mermaids can reach far beyond the Bermuda Triangle and have seen many ship disasters over the centuries, including the sinking of the RMS Titanic, MV Wilhelm Gustloff, MS Estonia, etc…. Though these evil mermaids always watched from the shadows and claimed the corpses after the survivors and rescuers had left, so that these evil mermaids could keep their existence a secret.
Now I’ll be going into deeper detail about these three things in future posts, so start tuned for that. This post is to help introduce my proposed idea for season 10 of The Genie Team.

I doubt that this has anything to do with the show, but I can’t help but think about the mention of three ships. Singleton company bought 3 German ships. First two being Prometheus and Kerberos and there is no mention of the third except that it existed.
So naturally, as someone who is obsessed with ships for most of my life, I had to connect it to actual ship disasters. In 20th century we have two big companies that suffered two of the greatest disasters of that kind in history.
White Star Line and Cunard line both had 3 sister ships that were their pride and unmatched in comparison to any other of their time. Titanic, Olympic and Britannic for WSL and Lusitania, Mauritania and Aquitania for CL.
Titanic and Lusitania were the greatest disasters of 20th century, matched only by Wilhelm Gustloff in WW2. Britannic also sank, but it wasn’t such a disaster because most of the people on it survived and it hit the mine during the war. But Titanic, in spite of everything, still had an air of mystery around it, most of all considering the theories about the Olympic actually being the one at the bottom of the ocean instead. Lusitania sinking is a public secret no one still talks about openly, which is that it was a sacrificial lamb sent to its terrible fate on purpose in order to bring US into war.
The creators of the show have actually said that they based the look of the Kerberos on Lusitania.
Anyway, I don’t know why I wrote this, but it’s kind of not leaving me alone. There is also the mystery of Mary Celeste that matches almost perfectly to the mystery of the Prometheus at the beginning.

cactus !!
cactus ⇢ something you’re currently learning (about)?
honestly it's been pretty plain in regards to what i'm learning, haven't found some interesting topic to latch onto on my own in quite some time.
there's the subject matter of the english presentation i mentioned in the discord lol, but the topic is kinda depressing ("which is more important to the progress of humanity, learning about the acts and lives of the villains or the stories of the victims?") it was the final project for a novel we read which took place during the 1945 evacuation of east prussia during the war and the sinking of the wilhelm gustloff, which was the deadliest maritime disaster in human history, yet i'd never heard of it until we read the book. it's super interesting and i had a great time during the unit even though the book itself wasnt my favourite
#(the novel is salt to the sea which is a fairly popular book i think?)#i could write an essay on how the best character is alfred frick#also this is a florian hateblog. btw.

My mother insisted the best way to get rid of guests is to play "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but that would definitely get result in me sitting on your couch for a further 2 hours to discuss shipwrecks. Wanna hear about the Wilhelm Gustloff?

I was actually going to sleep then I saw you respond to my ask, I'm actually very interested and intrigued so I wanted to respond immediately!
— Jesus fucking Christ they actually measured the entirety of the ship? That level of hm, how does one describe this, pettiness or determination? Perhaps a sense of both, I mean I'd get petty too if I lost something valuable and ended up getting an unfair compensation. I wonder what the reaction of the Germans were when they realized they actually measured it.
— oh god that's actually so fucking hilarious 😭😭 getting worked up over nothing, I mean, at least they had a design? 😭
— That's quite something, Grey Ghost? Why is QMS nickname Grey Ghost? Does it have relations due to it being not found?
— I... I have no idea what to say 😭 that's actually so ironic
— Holy shit a ship sinking in just 14 minutes is plain terrifying?? Why did it sink that fast anyways?
— Wow... That's actually really sad and quite brave of him too, I don't think I've heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster and 9000 deaths in one night is crazy. Hopefully that guy is doing alright, it's possible he might get survivors guilt, I might research about the disaster and see what I can find!
— woah, the first design is quite pretty! The second one reminds me of a factory for some reason
Ahh this is what little brain juice I can squeeze out from my brain, though I actually enjoyed this and it made my night more interesting! :D I'll head off to sleep now, goodnight!
—🌊
— lol apparently? there were more petty things in that affair, such as painting a ship supposed to be given to White Star Line in Germany's colors, turnign the british officers' quarters to a cleaning supply room etc lmao
— it was a design alright ... just not a good one. The wings of the golden eagle fell of during a storm so they're at the bottom of the atlantic right now. The eagle looks even more stupid without the wings😭 (picture at the bottom)
—The ship was painted fully grey because it was used as a troop ship which made it hard to find it. The ship was extremely fast, so it was fast to catch her. These two characteristics earned her the name The Grey Ghost. (picture at the bottom)
— the ships weren't even alike???? one had an funnel and whatnot?? i'm not even sure how they thought that it would work ... and it clearly didn't.
— It was a foggy night and two ships were supposed to go past each other, but in the fog they couldn't see each others lights, so a norweigan ship called Storstad rammed the side of Empress of Ireland and cut up a gigantic hole. The ship itself was almost half the size of titanic. A lot of people died that night because they didn't have the time to get out.
— I'm not even sure it was legal to sink the WG? I know that it had been a hospital ship during WW2 (it's seen as a war crime to sink a hospital ship), but it seems like it had returned to a normal ship during the time WG was sunk. The reason (i think) why it was sunk was because a lot of nazi party members were on board with their families, supposedly relocating to another country, and was sunken by soviet submarines. WIlhelm Gustloff could only carry 1465 passangers, but had around 10 000 during its sinking. Although there were many bad people on board there were children as well. The actor was a small child, so i hope that he doesn't remember much of it, because I cannot imagine the horror he must live with otherwise.
— Unfortunately, the times were changing and the edwardian design was no longer popular :( I would have loved another Olympmic class liner :(
here's a before an after of the eagle lmao
From left to right: SS Normandie, RMS Queen Mary, RMS Aquitania
I could talk about ocean liners forever. If I got paid by the hour to talk about them I would be so fucking rich I'm telling you
