Moe - Sex Is A Life (from the ‘La Bufa’ LP on Conrad Sound)

Oslo’s MoE has held steady lately with an impressive pace for their releases, most recently a collab with Mette Rasmussen titled “Tolerancia Picante”. Prior to that they also dropped a solo full-length, “Oslo Janus (IV)”. Both of those are available digitally and physically through Conrad Sound. But in between the two aforementioned records, MoE managed to record another full length titled “La Bufa“. Not sure on it’s potential availability, but the video appears to be the lead single.

MoE’s kitchen sink approach to improvisational rock never lets me down. Filled with bursts of free jazz, no wave, noise, absurdist poetry, blues, with the occasional injection of ear-piercing screeches. It all blends together, never a hint of where it might be taking you. Some of the most exciting music being made this year. They’ve found a sound that fits nicely somewhere i the proximity of Captain Beefheart, Mark Dagley’s wilder projects, Weasel Walter, and Europe’s most impressive jazz improvisers.

SULT + LASSE MARHAUG - Harpoon LP (Pica Disk/Conrad Sound)

So much happens on Harpoon that calling it “busy” is like describing a three-dimensional object with two-dimensional adjectives. It also doesn’t get at exactly how the acoustic trio Sult (guitarist Håvard Skaset, percussionist Jacob Felix Heule, and contrabassist Guro Skumsnes Moe) can make such a racket while exuding so much patience and clarity. I can hear every nanosecond of activity happening on Harpoon and yet if I let my brain defocus the tiniest bit, suddenly I’m drowning in noise.

The simplest explanation for how this can be is the sculpting prowess of Lasse Marhaug, to whom Sult handed source material and freed to do whatever he felt like with it. Certainly Marhaug has done so well with this type of exchange in the past that huge credit for Harpoon’s unendingly-fascinating sound-storm has to go to him. But even that doesn’t get to the stunning alchemy of this record. It doesn’t feel like a collaboration in the back-and-forth sense, but more like a kind of musical block universe devoid of time’s beginning/middle/end arrow. Its existence seems oddly necessary - as if this sound had to exist, always existed, a part of the universe the group is discovering rather than inventing.

I’ve been a fan of Sult before they’d made a sound. I’ve known Jacob, Guro and Håvard for ten+ years, and everything they’ve done has been interesting – Basshaters, MoE, Art Directors, Bay Oslo Mirror Trio, Street Priest – they’re creative/forward thinking musicians that follow their obsessions – and that’s always worth my time. So when they told me they were starting an acoustic noise band I knew it was going to be special. And it was. I dug their first two albums and was seriously stoked when they asked me to be involved on their third record. They’d recorded hours of amazing material, and I got free rein to mold it into whatever I wanted. I went for big monolithic blocks of sound – because I happen to really (really) like big monolithic blocks of sound. Usually my music has electronic origins, but Harpoon is all acoustic, which gives the music a physical presence you don’t often get on noise records. And of course, this record owes a thing or two to the work of artists like David Jackman, Andrew Chalk, GX Jupitter-Larsen and David Tudor, but I feel Sult is worthy of that lineage. I’m just glad I got to come along.

Crossing the border again of what it is being me. See-through as a bottle. No smile or words to hide behind. Or clothes or make up. It flows out of me. My own mass, what makes me me. I lift myself down so I cannot see. Sounds everywhere. Intuition. Spine. Trust. Surrender. It is singing inside my ear. Presence. Wanting to touch another humans mind. Roots grow. Swallowed by the presence. I am breathing loud breath. Beep sounds. Circles on the contrabass, shift to scream. Stretching, stretching moment. State of noise. Dark ocean seeking inwards. Outwards. Shadow, road, we are breathing. Continuing, falling, look up, eyes closed. Border not present. Seeking border, no border. A fierce march forward without knowing why. Endurance like a cactus.

Valerie Solanas, the mentally ill woman who shot Andy Warhol in 1968, has had a remarkably long run. Her SCUM Manifesto (Society for Cutting Up Men), which called for the overthrow of the government, the elimination of the money system, and the destruction of the male sex, has reportedly been translated into more than a dozen languages. ��She has been the subject of books, plays, musical compositions, TV shows and movies; both Lilli Taylor and Lena Dunham have played her.

And now, 30 years after her death at the age of 52 in a hotel in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, the Norwegian-French company Plexus Polaire, led by extraordinary artist Yngvild Aspeli, has turned Valerie Solanas into a puppet. Several puppets, actually.

It’s the best thing they could have done. Puppetry redeems “Chambre Noire,” as it does “King Kong” and “Frozen,” except more so, because nobody is likely to accuse those Broadway shows of glorifying a fictional reindeer or a giant ape.

In the hour-long show, which is running through Sunday as part of the Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theater, Aspeli presents Solanas as a human-size puppet terminally ill during her last days in that San Francisco hotel room. She is so convincingly brought to life that it was sometimes difficult to discern who was the puppet and who the human manipulating her. There was another life-size puppet of Solanas in the courtroom where she was tried and convicted of attempted murder. There’s also a child puppet who at one point clings to the human in amusing, life-like ways. An Andy Warhol puppet rides on Valerie’s back until she shoots him off her. But even more remarkable are the puppet….parts. The human stands behind two fake but convincing women’s legs that seem to become part of her body, and then engages in some erotic/lewd gymnastics anatomically impossible for mere humans. Later, the human walks on multiple human-like legs, like a spider. The puppets are not all that are impressive about the production. Video designer David Lejard-Ruffet and lighting designer Xavier Lescat create an array of light patterns and projections that jump out at the audience in sometimes arresting ways (though the cascading neon signs that are apparently supposed to represent New York more accurately conjure up Las Vegas.) Much effort went into the stagecraft of this show. Percussionist Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen presents an inventive soundscape. Guro Moe Skumsnes Moe has composed original music. (I’d love to know what Pierre Tual did exactly; he’s credited as “outside eye.”) But there’s no way to avoid completely the subject of the story, which is inspired by a Swedish novel by Sara Stridsberg entitled Drömfakulteten (translated as “The Faculty of Dreams” or “The Dream Faculty”), which has been described as a discomforting fictionalized account of Solanas’ life and death. Solanas’ imagined rants (“My diagnosis is really angry”) are the least interesting aspect of “Chambre Noir.” Under the Radar’s terminally hip description of Solanas in its marketing material comes close to despicable – “the first intellectual whore, writer, radical feminist, creator of the SCUM Manifesto, the woman who shot Andy Warhol… A character that is complex, multi-sided, outrageous and absolutely human.” Its promotion of a figure of violence is disturbing.

But of course it’s not alone. Stridsberg’s novel has been translated into English and repackaged as “Valerie,” with a publication date in August.
