Daily Instrument — Octobass

The octobass is a bowed string instrument from Paris made in 1850. It is a giant version of the double bass with 3 strings (tuned to C0, G0, and D1). The octobass stands at 12 feet tall and has to be played standing on a platform. The player vibrates the string with a bow and frets the strings using a foot pedal.

When You Need More BASS.

Do you need an instrument that goes into the infrasound range? No. Do you want an instrument that will register on a seismometer and attract whales and elephants? I mean, if you're Hector Berlioz apparently you do.

Give Edgar Meyer a few weeks with this thang and he'll figure out how to shred on it. Davie504 figured out how to slap on it pretty quick.

This bass is somehow even more comically large in person, BTW. Because the head is barely even clearing the ceiling it's above the gallery lights and so as you strain to look all the way up the neck it kinda recedes into the shadows like a giant villain in a shonen anime.

I am bringing this up now solely because I just had the most cursed idea. You know how steam-powered cars and omnibuses are a thing in the mid to late 1800s, right? Imagine stuffing a polka band into the backseats with an octobass as the bass boost. Victorian hyphy.

i've been learning about the octobass lately and i currently have 3 thoughts:

one, they are so cool and i want to play one so bad

two, google says only seven have ever existed which is not okay. it's called an OCTObass what do you MEAN there haven't been eight

three, i'd be willing to bet that if one was played on discworld the world would probably be destroyed. i'd also be willing to bet that, somewhere in the unseen university, there's a locked room with eight octobasses arranged in an octagon, and a foolish aspiring magician will one day happen upon it and decide that what this place really needs is some MUSIC.
