Republican figureheads from Silicon Valley are rallying behind former president Donald Trump’s selection of Ohio senator J.D. Vance as his running mate.

Top Silicon Valley leaders like Elon Musk came out in support of Vance as Trump’s vice presidential pick in the hours after the official announcement was made on Monday. Musk said that the Trump-Vance ticket “resounds with victory” and called it an “excellent decision” by Trump. David Sacks, a prominent GOP donor and venture capitalist, wrote on the social media site X, “This is who I want by Trump’s side: an American patriot.”

Musk, Sacks, and former Fox News Host Tucker Carlson all lobbied Trump over the weekend to choose Vance, according to a Tuesday Axios report.

The tech industry’s excitement over Vance comes as little surprise. Vance, a venture capitalist himself, has worked alongside major investors like Peter Thiel and AOL founder Steve Case. When Vance ran for US Senate in 2022, Thiel donated $15 million to support his campaign. Sacks also donated $900,000 during the Senate election, according to Open Secrets.

Despite his investing history, Vance has also become a vocal critic of the tech industry over his two years in the Senate. He’s called for Congress to shrink the liability protections provided to social media companies by Section 230. He’s also supported efforts to break up big tech companies, accusing them of monopolistic behavior. Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan has received massive amounts of backlash from the tech industry for her efforts to rein in some of its most major players, and Vance has praised her work.

Vance’s past regulatory positions seemingly haven’t diminished his tech-industry support. “If Trump/Vance wins, it will broadly be extraordinary for startups and capitalism broadly,” Jason Calacinis, investor and All In podcast cohost with Sacks, wrote in an email to WIRED on Monday. “Silicon Valley is largely libertarian—not left … They consider Biden a “decelerist” (decel), so Trump/JD have won—it’s game over.”

The pick hasn’t wooed all right-leaning investors. On Monday, The Washington Post reported that Ken Griffin, manager of the hedge fund Citadel, opposed Vance.

Still, Vance’s Silicon Valley backers could offer massive amounts of cash to support Trump’s reelection. On Monday, The New York Times reported that the pro-Trump America PAC, a new group backed by tech entrepreneurs like brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, could receive significant financial support from Musk. Later, The Wall Street Journal suggested that Musk would be donating $45 million each month.

Many of the same tech entrepreneurs who announced their support for Trump over the past few weeks are America PAC donors, like Shaun Maguire.

“Billionaires and corporations are literally rooting for J.D. Vance: They know he and Trump will cut their taxes and send prices skyrocketing for everyone else,” Jen O’Malley Dillon, the Biden-Harris campaign chair, said in a Monday statement.

I'm glad you asked!

Yes, I do! A whole series in fact. Not sure what the overarching title is gonna be, if there is one, but I usually just call it the Hywel Universe. I even have a side blog for it! @hyweluniverse

It's mostly just reblogs of things that remind me of the characters, but you'll find a few mood boards and excerpts there too!

Gonna try not to infodump too much, but my gosh I love talking abt this story and its characters. They're my babies!

It first started when I saw a piece from a 1983 art book by Hayao Miyazaki.

When I saw it, I got a surge of inspiration to write a story about a boy finding a mermaid in a place she normally wouldn't be. That idea became the first book, Hywel and the Mermaid! I've been working on it since freshman or sophomore year of high school and I have the first manuscript done, but it's far too short at the moment, so it's still a work-in-progress!

It's about Hywel Annesly, a thirteen-year-old Welsh printmaker's apprentice who finds a mermaid his age named Runa hidden in a room above his workplace, and he promises to get her back to the ocean she was captured from.

I went in wanting Hywel and Runa's story to be like something from Ghibli (esp Castle in the Sky, my favorite movie ever), but honestly, Hywel and Runa's relationship is more like Jen and Kira's than anything! When writing this story, I take inspiration from many things, esp the books I read as well as movie like The Last Unicorn and others by Ghibli, Jim Henson, and Don Bluth, for example.

The rest of the series follows the lives of the Annesly family as it branches out into other families, from the first book in 1909 to the current last book in 1983. So far the other books are Hywel and the Griffin's Feather (1911, Hywel returning a magic feather that was stolen from a griffin so the griffin can have its powers back), Anita and the Werewolf (1967, a werewolf girl going abroad for college and learning to love the lycanthropic side of herself thanks to meeting Hywel's nephew, Connell), Nico and the Manhattan Manticore (1969, Anita's younger brother struggling to deal with all the changes in his life, and bonding with a captured manticore named Kian along the way), Lonely Jim and the Myth-Protectors (1920s to 1950s-60s, the backstory of Connell's older brother), and Stella and the Skriker (1983, a detective investigating mysterious murders in New York City and reluctantly enlisting Nico's help).

Review:

A small town brother's best friend romance featuring a woman who just turned down a proposal and moved back into her small town to work on her inherited bait shop... all the while reuniting with her brother's best friend, ex marine single father and completely irresistible but off limits. Maren used to be a popular youtuber before it became too much and she moved out. Now years later after her boyfriend proposed to her, she turns him down and walks away from her job as a park ranger to go home and work on her inheritance, a bait shop. Maren is now reunited with her brother and his best friend, Liam, a handsome ex marine who is now a single father. Liam is completely off limits but she can't help but be drawn to him and his charming kids and the home that they are giving her. While she is meant to be just working on fixing up the bait shop and selling it....but maybe Liam can convince her to stay. This was definitely a small town romance with spice as Maren and Liam instantly fall for each other. The book was just okay for me, the whole "issues" with the relationship weren't really that much of an issue and the romance was insta love. I really wish I could like it more but something about this book just didn't convince me over. The romance was fine but the story just kind of felt like it was missing something and I can't put my finger on it. While this one wasn't for me I do think that if you like the trope of brother's best friend I think you'd have fun with it.
