reminder that adhd medication isn't a luxury or preference, but a lifesaving medication. a 10 year long study in the usa showed that, when properly medicated, the rate of car crashes people with adhd get into goes down significantly--men's rate drops by 38%, and women's by 42%. the med shortage, denial of meds by doctors, rising prices, and the "war on drugs" has killed--with such a car dependent society, not driving frequently isn't an option, which means we need better healthcare and need it now.

edit because i forgot to explain: short link is to an article by the washington post, it should be free to read

the americans going "i need to leave to europe" and especially the smug europeans saying "america needs to fix its racist, climate change denier voters" are operating on an advanced model of cognitive dissonance. sir starmer's landslide labour country was gripped by race riots a few months ago and handed out five years to climate protesters. nearly every far right party in europe is first or second with youth voters for both genders: RN secured about a third of both 18-24 and 25-34 age groups; young men across the continent said they would vote trump by massive margins. tusk barely beat back orban 2.0 in poland, and his immediate reaction was to double down on fortress europe—something all other parties are doing. EU politicians are so averse to public investment that this fear blew up the german government yesterday.
there is nowhere to run, there is no country "safe" from the global far right wave

I think it needs to be said in light of VERY recent events that violence on the MAGA front is about to increase tenfold. They will see this as permission to carry out the violence they've been promising since day one. Don't fearmonger, just keep yourselves and your families wary. Please stay safe out there, americans.

A lot of folks are responding to the whole Reddit situation by calling for the return of decentralised forums, and I think it's important to remember that, contrary to certain popular narratives, the reason early 2000s forum culture has fallen by the wayside is not because people are Just Lazy. Certainly, ease of use is part of it, but a much larger part of it is how vulnerable self-hosted forums are.
Basically, the problem is that even the largest and most carefully managed self-hosted forums can be rendered unusable more or less indefinitely by a single sufficiently determined hostile actor. This can take the form of both attacks on the forum's social infrastructure (i.e., via sock-puppet accounts, botting, organised "raids", etc.) and attacks on its technical infrastructure (i.e., via hacking, DDoS, etc.). In either case, a self-hosted forum has no real defence, and the majority of decentralised forum communities survive only by virtue of their relative obscurity; once a self-hosted forum manages to attract the attention of That One Guy who's willing to devote his life to shitting the place up over some microscopic slight, it's effectively game over.
Right now, there are essentially only two mitigation strategies:
Gathering huge numbers of communities under a single, massively centralised technical infrastructure that's simply too large and robust for any one hostile actor to bring down; and
Hardening the community's social infrastructure either by going private and invite only (i.e., the Discord approach), or by making use of a vast centralised pool of volunteer labour to aggressively enforce community standards (i.e., the Reddit approach).
To be clear, these are not intractable problems; other solutions may well exist. However, any proposed plan for bringing decentralised public forums back needs to address them. If you're going in operating under the assumption that forums have become marginalised simply because corporations are evil and people are lazy, you're setting yourself up to learn the hard way why self-hosted forums no longer seem to be capable of growing beyond a certain point.

Our shortened attention spans due to the constant dopamine chasing and needed escapism benefits the government/people in power because if the media stops covering something people tend to forget about it. This is beneficial because if people forget about something, or the general populace does, the government can feel free to 1) Never bring it up again and 2) Distort the facts of the event/what actually happened.
Let me elaborate on 2, because that’s most likely what we’re going to see happen in the case of Luigi Mangione. As the attention shifts, the government will release information that either directly or indirectly opposes the true events, and soon enough that’ll just be “what happened.”
To combat this, we as a society have to begin REMEMBERING. The government consistently gaslights and will continue to gaslight us, and we must not let them.
This is true not only in the case of Luigi Mangione but for other instances as well, like January 6th and the election.
Do not forget! That is how we lose power and they continue to gain.

RETRACTION: Unfortunately, the story about Biden bringing his dog, "Commander", to greet Trump is only wishful thinking on the part of the newspaper editor. —Our apologies.

Hey you! Yes, you!
Would you like your creation on display in a museum?
Would you like to help a super awesome PhD candidate complete her dissertation?
Would you like a great excuse to further procrastinate that thing you've been procrastinating?
All of these and more are great reasons to participate in Affirmation/Transformation: Fandom Created, an exhibition at Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art. (You do NOT need to be an artist, or even someone who creates art to participate!) Write a story, write a song, design a cosplay, create a fancy manicure, make a meme, make a stop-motion video, choreograph a dance, make a SuperWhoLock gif fic, or anything else your heart can dream up.
Your creation must follow only one rule: It must be inspired by a fusion of 1. any fandom of your choice, and 2. one of the featured Haggerty pieces (click the link to see them!)
Completed works are due July 1, 2024. The exhibition will run August 23rd-December 22nd, 2024, and will be available to view in person and online.
To see the Haggerty pieces, and to sign up to receive email reminders about the fan event, visit https://epublications.marquette.edu/fandom/Affirmationtransformation

An alternate angle on the Francis Scott Key Bridge shows what appears to be a large explosion, which you can see 👀 from the other angles I posted. Something reeks like a possible Black Swan Event?
Does it seem like a barge bumping into a pillar would cause the whole bridge to collapse? 🤔
