There are a number of classes to choose from, many of which include a free meal. This is personal to her as members of her family including her sister with young children have been impacted by the shutdown.

When the U.S. government shuts down, it’s often difficult to ignore the drastic effects for the United States as a whole. Not only does it show instability within the political institution, we, as citizens, entrust to protect our rights as a liberal democracy, but directly affects government workers left without a job. This most recent government shutdown in 2019 began December 22nd after disagreements between the republican party headed by Trump and a democratic House of Representatives against the building of “The Wall.” The shutdown lasted for more than a month greatly affecting workers who were without a paycheck struggling to make ends meet.

However, within the chaos between political parties comes a light from religious involvement in the community. In Rels390B, we’ve learned about the civic virtue of faith, and the active involvement in communities. In the article, Congregations share, sacrifice during government shutdown - Religion News Service” various religious groups supported government workers in their time of need. As exemplified by the National Washington Cathedral that handed out bags of groceries to those affected, religious groups are getting actively working to help alleviate the hardship. Faith leaders sent letters to the government calling for an end to the shutdown, participated in news conferences, such as one outside United Methodist Church, and openly praying for those affected. The cries for help and political involvement came from various religious denominations and sects including those in the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu faiths, and countless others. 

Houses of worship began to utilize their own financial means to support those struggling without a steady income. Many couples work for the government and thus have have no household income entirely. The Islamic Community Center of Potomac has spent $4000 to assist workers affected by the shutdown. Another outstanding example is Alfred Street Baptist Church offering grocery gift cards and service prayers for those affected.

Although there is controversy and conflicting views within our current government, it is remarkable to see members of the community and religious institutions stepping up to take action and feel sympathy for the workers who need support and hope. It shows how religious communities can mobilize and make a difference as we’ve reviewed in our religions course at SDSU.

This piece impacted me personally, because I read a couple of stories about furloughed workers struggling without pay checks,  people destroying Joshua Tree National Park because there’s no protection, and airports having various issues with decreased security. While I wasn’t directly affected, I felt the impact of the community around me, especially of places like Joshua Tree in which I have such fond memories. We need to work to make our voices heard and lift the people around us up. By working to see eye to eye, in congress, in government, and in our own connections, we can better the world one negotiation at a time.

The religions actively involved to help those less fortunate during the government shut down (Christians, Muslims, Jewish people, etc.) were discussed in Religious Studies 390B. This post shows the impact religions have on politics, whether it be through lobbying their beliefs (not mentioned in article) or through active involvement in the community (as mentioned), groups of religious people influence the political spectrum in America.

Bread for the City is an organization in DC that helps low-income residents with food and other services. in addition to their regular operations, they’re opening their doors to furloughed federal employees who are suffering because of the shutdown. they’ll need all the help they can get; DC is home to thousands of federal workers.

WHAT A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN MEANS TO THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY

1.       Flood Insurance

- No new policies and/or renewals will be processed.   Therefore, if a loan requiring flood insurance does not have the proper insurance in place, it cannot close under any circumstance.

- If the policy was paid before the shut down or is not yet due for renewal, there is no impact. The shut down only impacts the issuance of new and/or renewal policies.

2.       IRS Transcripts

- Most likely unavailable or significantly delayed.

3.       USDA

- No new commitments and/or loan guarantees can be issued.     

- If a commitment has already been issued, it will be business as usual. If a commitment has not been issued, the loan cannot close until commitment authority is restored.    

4.       FNMA/FHLMC

- Completely unaffected by the shutdown.

5.       FHA, VA & GNMA

- Most staff will be unavailable – however – it should be business as usual.

-  Loans will not be insured/guaranteed, but that will not impact production.

- Any properties that requires government staff intervention (example condo approvals) will be on hold as staff is unavailable.
