"Cracks in the Heart" Prologue...chapter 1...chapter 2
You loved the rain very much, you and mom and dad often went for walks in it… But the rain took your beloved parents away… now you are alone… with your toy Harley…. This is the last gift from mom… And here comes the rain again. A five-year-old child stands under an umbrella in a black dress, crying and wiping her little tears. Your nanny Lily stands next to you and holds the umbrella. Alfred stands nearby. You watch as your parents' coffins are lowered into the damp, cold ground. Tears roll down your cheeks, your little nose is red from how many times you wiped it with a napkin. The final resting place of your parents is covered with dirt. Alfred placed his hand on your shoulder.
“Lady… it’s time to go…”
I turn to him and hug Lily one last time.
“Lily, I will miss you…”
“(Your/name) I will also miss you, but the best life awaits you… You will have many opportunities… when you come back here, I will meet you with open arms…”
She hugs you tightly.
“Goodbye, little one,” kissing you on the forehead, she let go. Wiping your tears and getting to her feet, she helped Alfred put you in the car. When the car started moving, Lily watched her with her gaze, you looked in response into her beautiful blue eyes that radiated sadness… you watched until she disappeared from sight. Sitting up straight, you turned your attention to Alfred.
“Alfred…”
“Yes, lady?”
“And Bruce… is he good? Is he as good as my dad?”
“Lady, Bruce is your father, and he has a kind heart. You have many brothers and sisters, and your father loves them all…”
A He Will Love Me?
A he will love me? His love for me will be enough? After all, he loves so many people, I am afraid that his love for me will not be enough! -Of course, it will be enough. His love is inexhaustible.
At this point, your conversation stopped. You looked out the window, the trees quickly flashed before your eyes, the rain drummed against the window.
_________________Time Skip________________
You stood in front of a huge mansion more resembling a castle. You took Alfred's hand with your little hand, he headed towards the entrance of the house. Opening the large doors, the elderly butler let you inside. You looked around the hall, but there was no one there...
When Alfred closed the door and turned around, his face frowned.
-Alfred... where is dad?-You thought that your new father would come to greet you, but apparently, that is not the case.
-Perhaps he is in the office... I think it is worth notifying him of your arrival.
Going up, you walked down a long corridor, you counted about five doors, and at the very end of the corridor was it... a dark door... shadows emanated from it... as if warning you...
-Alfred, do you see this too?- The elderly butler looked in your direction with a look of confusion.
-What exactly? ...
-Nothing... just seemed so...
The rest of the way to your father's office you spent in complete silence. Here you are standing at the threshold, Alfred raises his hand and with a light wrist movement knocks on the door, and a knock is heard.
Come in, you heard a deep and clearly tired voice that belongs to your father. Alfred was the first to enter the room, followed by you, and carefully closing the door, he straightened up...
-Master Bruce do you remember that Police Commissioner Gordon called you about your biological daughter?
-Yes…-he replied, still hunched over the table, sifting through a pile of papers.-What’s the matter?
-She has already arrived, sir… -Alfred nudged you forward a bit so that your father could see you. You looked at the stern man and hugged your toy Harley tighter.
-Come on, miss, you need to say hello-whispered the elderly butler to you.
-Hello…- during the entire conversation, your so-called father did not lift his gaze to you; he was more interested in the papers on his desk.
-Alfred, place her in one of the rooms and order everything she needs.-
He spoke as if you were not in the room.
-And please do not distract me until dinner if it is not something serious.-
That’s how your first meeting with your “father” went.
————————————————————————
All the rooms are occupied, and now you wander through lonely and confusing corridors.
The walls are adorned with grotesque portraits of people unknown to you and gloomy landscapes that you have never seen.
You hear some buzzing… and it is so familiar… you are being led by some unknown force… Harley hangs in your hand, dark shadows crawling out of nowhere wrap around your legs and lead you… They seem so familiar and dear… You want to cry from this…
Here you stand before a door, voices are calling you… asking you to open this door… Your eyes darted to the portrait hanging next to the door.
It was a woman of unprecedented beauty and elegance.
-This is your grandmother, Martha Wayne. She was like an angel descended from heaven, kind and ready to help everyone.I’m sure you would have liked her.-
Looking back, you glanced at Alfred. a soft smile was visible on his face directed at you.
-You look so much like her.-
Turning back to the door, all the shadows disappeared, and you no longer heard the voices.
-Alfred, I want this room.
----------------- Time Skip -----------------------
Almost a week has passed since your move; new furniture was ordered for you, and you and Alfred went and bought a lot of new clothes and many new toys, but you never parted with your beloved Harley.
You started to see the shadows more often; they crawled out from the corners or the bed, but as soon as someone appeared in their line of sight, they disappeared.
You ran through the corridor playing with Harley.
You began to do this more often; you liked running through the large and spacious corridors.
The ringing laughter echoed through the deserted halls zalam
Harley was dangling in your hand while you were running. Suddenly, you bumped into something or someone, but you managed to keep your balance just in time.
-Baby! Watch where you’re running! You are my new little sister, right? Nice to see you!I’m Dick. The guy ruffled your hair.
-Y…YES! I (your/name) -You exclaimed excitedly, as someone other than Alfred paid attention to you.
-You haven’t seen Alfred? He usually cleans up here at this time…
-He went to get groceries…-you mumbled barely audibly.
-Don’t you want to play with me and Harley? -You shyly averted your eyes and raised the toy so he would notice it. His face twisted at the sight of the toy in a black and red suit, but you didn’t notice that.
-No, baby, I have a lot to do. I’ll definitely play with you next time!
With that, your conversation ended, and you smiled like a silly girl because you finally met one of your brothers.
———————————————————————-
After dinner, you were getting ready for bed. Shadows began to crawl out from under the bed… they became bolder and bolder…
Getting up from the chair, you approached the shadows and extended your hand… A misty little whisker timidly reached out to your outstretched hand, as if studying you… and then, scared of something, it slid back under the bed.
Leaning down and looking under the bed, you saw only darkness that was luring you more and more…

From the moment that I close my eyes, take a deep breath and feel the sun kissing my skin delicately until the moment I open my eyes again with a clearer mind. And there's always one though that is in the back, watching me over every step and reminding me everything I've been through.
And its the fact that I would never change a thing in my life. Because every point converges in the epitome of the current moment I cried, I smile and I will appreciate.
Whenever I close my eyes I find myself, I find the thirteen year old girl who lost everything. I find the girl who got adopted by the world's greatest Dad. The same girl who saved Bruce Wayne from kidnapping, in a silly old custome which I thought to wear because having a female version of Batman at the time was unthinkable.
That same event that lead me to what would became the career that gave me my whole life and everything I cherish for. From my beloved friends which I love to see and help everyday, the kind man who extended his hand to us all, and the man who taught me that romantic love is only a thing I can experiment with trust from years.
I fin that girl, who watched her adoptive mom die, the one who got paralized and standed by for months by an hospital bed, hoping every day her Dad recover his self afteer being pushed by the limit. All done by the same man.
I find the girl who decided not to let the man win, and still find kindness in life. Working everyday to help and seek the truth for the sake of the few good people in gotham.
I find the girl who recovered, I find the girl who succeeded.
I find Barbara Jean Gordon, I find me.

My mental health walk really gives me the best ideas for AUs.
Like: Batfam Dune AU.
Duke Wayne has been sent to Arrakis due to the previous Duke's disappearance. He is joined by his dear mental ser and (Alfred Pennyworth) whose secret ability allows him to act as the m best spy on Wayne's service, and also his official mentat Gordon. The old man is one of his closest friends, and one of the few people he can trust. Gordon's daughter Barbara joins the Bene Gesserit for a while instead of going with them
During her stay with the sisters, Barbara finds out about Cassandra: a Bene Gesserit genetic marvel. She's their most promising student, if it wasn't for the father's demands that her vocal cords be cut. He visits her from time to time, checking on the progress for his beloved weapon.
Barbara also figures out while studying with the sisters about the true properties of the Spice, knowing none of his old friends and family would be able to leave planet again. Not without being already addicted to it. In her studying, she find out about a plot against her old Duke. Realizing it could be her father's death, she decides to graduate early, steal a child prodigy and make for Arrakis.
When she arrives it's too late, she already knew it would be (it had been years) but she had to at least try. Duke Wayne welcomes her and her stolen charge as his personal truth sayers. His protection keeps Cain and the sisters away from Cassandra, but Barbara makes sure to keep them both protected from the spice, wearing filters under their hoods and veils to keep it out.
Meanwhile, on camp Wayne. He adopts two kids. The first one is a Fremen boy whose parents had been wrongfully killed. The second a stray kid from the streets of Arrakeen that almost stole his water. He personally trains them both, the kids already proving proficient in the blade. Richard is really observant and great at playing people, he lights every room he steps in and is as cutting with words as with the blade. Jason is more reserved, losing himself to his books, reading the diaries of previous inhabitants and counseling his Duke.
After loosing his dear friend that first year, Duke Wayne soon finds need for a new mentat. The solution comes from the hands of the arbiter of Change, the lady Janet Drake, and her husband the water merchant. Their boy, though very young, shows great aptitude. Ridding themselves from him would also allow them to further pursue their studies deep in the desert. Enter "born-on-plantet" Timothy Drake with the most unsettling blue eyes ever seen.
He's not bad at it, but it's clear he's only as good as he is. Which is impressive for a self taught kid or a regular person, but not for a mentat. His actual talent is for the Bene Gesserit, so him and Lady Barbara made a bargain: she instructs him in the sisterhood's ways and he teaches him he father's trade. She soon surpasses both him and Pennyworth, becoming a force of nature. Richar is very in love thank you very much.
Tim also excels expectation, him and Cassandra becoming an unstoppable duo on their Duke's counsel. She can read truth like no other sister, and with Tim's impossible to discern lies, Wayne has all bases covered. Surrounded by his loyal and talented adoptive brood, not even his wife could stand a chance to trick him.
The beautiful sayyadina Thalia Al Ghul is a dangerous woman.the daughter of a Sui doctor and a fremen woman, she's too intelligent and charismatic to be anything other than deadly. Wayne knows to suspect her, even if he still knows not why. Little does he know, his wife turned coat for him a long time ago. She was meant to purposely create an abomination, a child that could be overtaken by the echoes of their ancestors. Instead, she delivered Damian Wayne, a perfectly lovely and healthy child. She still holds the intent to further the Fremen cause, but she would not sacrifice her child or beloved for it.
Joker would be some sort of madman, an average smuggler that got his thopter shot out of the sky. Everyone left him for dead, but he came back from the dessert, and he came back wrong. He portrays himself as a proper, rallying the worst people from the city and terrorizing Duke Wayne. One of his stunts leaves Lady Barbara paralized and he takes Jason to drop him on the dessert as was done to him. Duke Wayne almost loses himself to grief, but his son isn't gone.
Jason gets rescued by a handsome redhead smuggler that intends to get some hefty sum for taking him back to Arrakeen. On the way there, they flirt, very much Han Solo Leia vibes. Tragically they get caught in a sandstorm. After crash landing, Jason helps the pilot fix the thopter while the other man teaches him how to avoid calling worms. It is at this point that Jason starts feeling a little "huh?" Tugging at his brain. Turns out, the young man in front of him is the adoptive son of Duke Oliver, the previous Duke of Arrakis.
Once he gets found out, Roy is put in a nasty position, but Jason promises to not give them away. The previous Ducal family decided to help the Fremen retake the planet, but once the imperial authority started getting sus, they had to pretend to be dead and hide with their fellow Fremen. Lady Dinah, the Duke's consort was the only one left behind to act as a liaison between the palace and the Sietch.
Jason gets dropped back with his family, very flustered with his dessert encounter and quickly re-reading Roy's diary. Also I need him to send little notes to Roy through Dinah and Talia anytime the Reverend Mothers trade places. Dinah thinks it's adorable but Talia is already planning his adored son's wedding. Also it helps with her strategy: converting the Duke's children to the Fremen cause. She knows that if she went straight to him he'd say something along the lines of "but the Fremen kill people" but if she manages to keep pulling them into their cause he'll eventually see reason.
Roy's accidental conversion sparks a new idea, and the little girl Talia had been training in the ways of the sayyadina became her best play. She sends Stephanie to seduce Tim into the cause and accidentally drags Cass with her. Dick is obviously very easy to convince, and he's probably been in the plot for a very long while, being friends with Roy and Kori. Damian is literally born into the plot.
I could go on and on and on. Duke should also be Fremen, but raised in a Sietch. He gets adopted once Bruce actually agrees to join the cause (I promise you it's not a "Beloved I got u another child as a thank u" situation). Duke is very much not impressed by Bruce, and instead constantly pesters Tim and Cass to learn their secret techniques. Bruce is fascinated by the Fremen resourcefulness and customs. Where Oliver joined the cause out of outrage for the way the Fremen are treated in their own planet, Bruce joins out of love for their culture. There's plenty of comedy there, especially once Jason and Roy reunite -both older- and it turns into a matter of "not with his son". Dinah and Talia have already organized the wedding reception and Lian is helping with decorations. Also, Damian grows up to be a doctor like his mama and grandfather.

Old Habits Die Hard! [1]
Synopsis; In which Scaramouche takes what he’s gotten back for granted.
Warnings; None for now.
Word Count; 654
CRASH!
That’s the very last thing you probably remember hearing before you blacked out- Nothing else… Maybe you felt yourself stop in your tracks, maybe your felt a throbbing pain before blacking out- Perhaps you felt nothing at all. I wouldn’t know.
You wake up on a hospital bed, the bright artificial lights of the room seemingly blinding you- I sit by your side, gazing at your beautiful face. Oh how I miss looking at you… Can’t you see how beautiful you are to me? The way your gaze shifts at every moment, all those little expressions you make; It’s so adorable, I can’t help but wish to hug you oh so tightly. But I’d never admit it to you in your face- No, of course not!
You attempt to adjust your pretty eyes to the blaring iridescent lights, wincing in what seems to be pain, most likely from what had happened. Your blank gaze settles upon me, the guy sitting in a chair right beside you, and a nurse who bares witness to this life-changing moment.
I look at you with relief- Relieved that you’re awake, relieved that you’re alive. What a joyous moment this is; However, my expression remains calm as I request for the nurse to call over for a doctor- Talking about how you’re finally awake.
Unfortunately for me, that moment is short lived as I look down upon you, my shadow casted over your beautifully limp form.
“Who are you?”
Those words break me, how could you not remember who I am? You’re beloved Scaramouche? Is this a joke? Some kind of sick prank to pull? But that confused look on your face says otherwise… How could you not remember the man you’ve claimed to have an pure, unadulterated love for; The man you’ve made promises to share the rest of your life with-
How could you not remember me?
But alas, that’s okay! I’ll help you out! I am your only lover after all!
“I’m your lover, [Name].” I say, giving you a small smirk as I gently stroke your head. Tears prickle in my eyes, seemingly about to burst out. You look at me with furrowed eyebrows, analyzing and scanning me like some sort of machine.
“You’ve been gone for over a month, pet.” I begin to explain, “You’ve had quite the accident!” I chuckle sarcastically, which makes the whole thing seem as not as big of a deal it truly is.
You look at me in confusion, before asking, “Wha- Accident? I was in an accident-?” I watch you piece things together, and then look down at yourself, your right arm put into a cast. You attempt to move your body slightly, only to stop and wince in pain.
I nod in confirmation, “Mhm, a pretty shitty one if I do say so myself.” I cross my arms, staring at you with intent.
Just before you can ask about the accident a doctor comes in, checking in on you. I sigh in relief for a moment, which you didn’t seem to notice.
Then doctor then tells us that you have amnesia. You’re able to remember parts of your identity (for example, your name and age) and compute other basic functions, but you can’t seem to remember other people. Which is the case for me and Archon’s know how many others.
You were asked to try and dig deeper into your memory- Friends, family, animals, places- Anything really. But you come up empty handed explaining to the doctor that you can’t remember anything.
You’re out of it, really. It’s been a month or two since you’ve last stood up, so movement is hard. You tell me your body feels stiff, to which the doctor then replies that you’ll need to do a bit of physical therapy before being discharged from the hospital.
I suppose I’ll just have to visit you to and from for the time being then.
Notes: Reader becomes a bit more timid and shyer after amnesia, before that they were still a bit shy but less timid, more willing to stand up for themself. Reader is gender neutral.
Also, slightly based off Lolita (I know, crazy right?) by Vladimir Nabokov, and Restart by Gordon Kormen.
Originally pitched this idea to @r0ttenhearts (if you don’t mind me tagging you!)

Writing this kind of artistically and as character studies for everyone. Reader's still reminiscing. Daddy issues. Jervis being an obsessive freak, per usual. More reader lore is dropped. ♫ “Something happened for the first time, in the darkest little paradise.” Don't Blame Me by Taylor Swift
Everything feels cold on mornings like these.
The light bleeds in through the venetian blinds, gray and gloomy. You huddle into the blankets, clinging to any warmth you can find. It's your dads house, or rather, apartment. You remember waking up in a king-sized bed years prior.
Your thoughts drift back to old memories again. You wish you could push them out.
"Dad, I'm scared." You say, seven years old, middle of the night, clutching a rabbit stuffed animal. Your mom rubs her face, still groggy and half-awake.
"Hey, hey. It's okay." He whispers through his own fatigue, stretching out his arms for you to join them on the bed. "Why are you scared?"
You hop on the bed, crawling into him. Your mother tosses, turning over with a lazy hum before drifting back to sleep. You squeeze your rabbit, Mr. Marbles, and bury yourself in the covers.
"What if they get me?" You ask, voice small. You can't see your fathers eyes soften through the darkness.
"Who?" He seems to sober up from sleep at your question, clearing his throat. His voice becomes a bit clearer.
"The bad guys." You say the words like they're sacred. It feels hard to get them out, and it feels swallowing salt-water.
Silence.
"I won't let them, I swear to you." Your dads voice speaks, and in his arms, you feel sleep slowly return to you. "I'm gonna protect you. And mommy."
"What about you?"
Silence.
"Go to sleep, Y/N. Everything's going to be okay."
You fell asleep that night, quiet, waking up to pancakes, and light that was much warmer than what you have now.
You sit up in your own bed, cramped. You heave a sigh, rubbing your temples. You're not tired like you should be. You stayed up the previous night, jumping roof-tops with Selina. It was a welcome distraction, the adrenaline that pooled in your blood at night. Mornings in Gotham were worse.
You hear whispers in the room over. Thin walls. You don't care to listen as you get dressed, but you do wonder who exactly your father could be talking too.
"How'd you find me?"
"Oh, you're famous, sir. You're names in the papers. The famous bounty hunter." You wince. Jim Gordon. Your father. The bounty hunter.
You walk to the room quietly, before stopping. You see the two men sitting down, and you piece together just who exactly is on the couch.
Both men turn to face you at the interruption, and Mr. Tetch looks equally as surprised as you are. His eyebrows pull together, and your dad looks like he's been caught doing something. He knows you don't approve of this bounty hunter bullshit.
"Ms. Y/N?" Mr. Tetch calls, and Jim picks his head up at this. He gives you a look.
"You two have met...?" Your dad speaks, sizing up the situation in concerned curiosity.
Before you can answer, Mr. Tetch does for you.
"Yes, sir. We've met at the Siren's club. Your daughter, I presume?" He asks, inquisitively. He looks as though gears are turning in his head. Jim simply nods, a bit uncertainly.
"Hi." You give a small wave. Mr. Tetch brightens up at this, somehow fascinated.
"Right." Jim says, slowly. He looks back between the two of you.
That familiar feeling of silence sounds out again. It tastes bitter.
"...I want you to find my dear friend." Mr. Tetch speaks up. "We're very close. But...her condition proved too much for me. I sought help, the worst kind, the fiend. Professor Strange." He hisses the insult with venom. You watch your dad raise a brow as he sips his coffee.
"Her condition?" He asks, and you marvel at the words. How odd.
"Some poison, in her blood." The man responds, like it's casual. "very rare, unique, in fact. He took her in. Said she needed constant supervision. He wouldn't let me see her."
There's an edge to his voice. The way he talks about this friend of his. Poisoned blood, you think, curious. For some reason it embitters you. You hate this fucking city sometimes.
"You go to the police?" Your dad asks. Of course he'd ask that.
"Useless." Mr. Tetch says, solemnly. "This is Gotham, after all."
You let out a soft chuckle at that, which makes both of them look at you. Both sets of eyes zone in on you. Your dad looks disappointed.
"Well, he's not wrong." You nip, and Mr. Tetch cocks his head up. "The GCPD is a shit show."
Mr. Tetch looks surprised at your audacity, and a bit amused. Your father reprimands you.
"Y/N." He says, and you bite back a retort. He sighs, dragging a hand along his face. "Indian Hill escapees get five grand from the GCPD. You able to top that?"
You remember when all the money in the world couldn't have swayed the famous Jim Gordon from his duty.
Mr. Tetch pulls out a wide wad of cash from his pocket, "I'll double it." He speaks. Woah. Did your mom give him that much for just one show? No way in hell. He must have gotten this money somewhere else.
"I'll see what I can do." Jim says, without question. You want to roll your eyes.
"Thank you, very much." The man responds. Polite, isn't he?
You watch as your dad pockets the money, and how he's handed a photo of a beautiful woman. In a strange way, it makes you feel a bit insecure.
"Leave your number-" Jim goes to speak, when Mr. Tetch interrupts him, handing a business card. Eager much.
The man leaves without a word, sending you a final glance before he turns. Those dark eyes...they startle you. He sends a small, intrigued smile. Again, it feels like the world stops. Your breath catches in your throat.
When he's gone, you stand on your toes to hover over your dads shoulder. You two stare at the business card in synonymous silence.
"The Great Jervis Tetch" Hah. So that's his first name. Jervis.
You suddenly feel warm. Maybe this house isn't that cold after all.

Hi people of the Internet today I just finished playing Portal 2 for the first time!! No, I did not play Portal 1, nor do I possess Portal 1, I just noticed that Portal 2 was installed on my Xbox (who knows how long it's been there) and I was like "huh. eh sure why not lol"
Here are my general, overall, completely disorganized thoughts about the game:
Funniest fucking dialogue I've ever lain witness to. At several points in the game I just completely stopped what I was doing and just paused to read the dang dialogue and just. Soak the wittiness in
"okay say apple" "[jumps] :D" "..okay good enough!!" love that
[Gordon Freeman 🤝 Chell] silent protags of Valve games gotta love it
The puzzles themselves were very fun. Sometimes they made me feel like a moron (Glados' words, not mine) and I had to go look up walkthroughs, but that's okay we've all done that maybe probably
Both Glados and Wheatley are wonderful characters 10/10. Against all odds they both occupy the holy trinity of "holy shit you're hilarious and I love you", "jesus fuck you're awful", and "goddamn I feel real bad for ya aw man aw geez"
Environments were beautiful. Favorite parts were the vintage look of the old testing facilities and the 'between' areas of Aperture Science that you run through when escaping from Glados/Wheatley
AWWW THE CORRUPTED CORES they got like 5 minutes of screentime but I love them already. Space Core my beloved. Can somebody tell me if they have fan names/canon names I must know damnit
...Aw man that ending. Made me feel all sorts of shades of melancholy goddamn
[Something happens] "is THAT WHERE THAT'S FROM???"*
*List of Somethings I didn't realize were from Portal 2:
the whole thing about the potatoes
the bit where Cave Johnson rants about committing arson with lemons
The Part Where He Kills You™️
The song Glados sings during the credits (wonderful song btw I danced around in front of the TV during that bit <3)
#think i got every thought of mine for now#maybe i'll add to this later idk lol#great game tho thoroughly enjoyed :]#portal#portal 2

Villian Edward lore? 👀
Oh, You want me to ramble about some old blue engine that I personality flipped to have 2014 Deviantart OCs Edginess and gave him a tour to hot topic????
Well buddy you came to the right place!
Villain AU takes place in a more brutal environment from the main AU, the story starts from Spencer taking Thomas away by force from Edward, them moving away to the Mainland where Ed cannot contact or know about their whereabouts.
Ed having gray hair is due to stress, not having Thomas means what he has no moral standing as he have nothing to lose, so in turn he never really gets out of his ‘rebellious phase’, being a more upfront and aggressive man.
Gone is his kind demeanor, gaining the unofficial title of the scariest engine to cross, though still manageable at first.
That is until the duke visited.🤭
And because my followers are hungry for Jameward I’ll drop that too.
The Gordon incident in the main AU never happened but they still have a rocky head start, before the duke visit their relationship was mending and was -very close- to confession.
During the visit he was bewildered when seeing his ex husband with his (now more grown) son, who doesn’t know him, and more so, doesn’t want to know him.
Never telling this side of him to anyone, it comes as a shock when Edward suddenly attacked Spencer in a fury of rage, both of them having a massive fight in the station.
James, afraid Edward would get hurt, tried breaking it off while Henry (alongside some drivers + firemen) ran to get sir Topham hatt, this ended up with him accidentally getting stabbed in the gut by Ed.
So far that’s what I got! Well from the last post you can tell what happened to out beloved Red engine! Ehe~
I’ll drop their designs somewhere in the future, I have alot of irl stuff going on hwhehewjwj, so umm err arrrr-
Thank you for the ask!🩵💙
(Also fucking dropped this at friday the 13th is that a bad omen-)

Appreciation for Leon’s Character Design in Resident Evil 4 Remake:
I just wanted to discuss Leon’s character design in RE4 Remake, because WOW, holy moly
Now first, I’d like to admit that it took some time for me to get used to his new design in this game. Leon was THE first video game character I ever found sexy, so his OG RE4 appearance was and still is absolutely beloved to me, and thus any differences between his design in this game and his design in the OG RE4 were jarring enough that I found his new design off-putting initially
But now that I’ve gotten used to it, I can confidently say that it stands right alongside OG RE4 as THE iconic Leon character design, imo
And I just wanted to talk a little bit more in depth about why I love it so much, because it is CLEAR that Capcom put a lot of thought and care into his new design
(Putting under a read more so that I don't clutter up the tag with my borderline incoherent ramblings)
• First, on a more general note, I’d like to say that I deeply appreciate the fact that, even in 1998 with the OG RE2, Capcom designed Leon with the intent of making him a pretty boy. It was a HUGELY unconventional and brave decision on Capcom’s part since it was and still is exceedingly rare for a video game, especially a horror video game, that has a western male protagonist and that is attempting to appeal to broader international sensibilities to make that male protagonist a pretty boy. The overwhelming majority of the time, in order to conform to broader international expectations of masculinity, if a video game has a western male protagonist, they will make him either completely average-looking or a gruff and grizzled hyper-masculine man
Now, am I saying that there's something wrong with enjoying or preferring average-looking or gruff and grizzled hyper-masculine male characters? Absolutely not. After all, I myself have my fair share of them that I enjoy, e.g. James Sunderland and Gordon Freeman. And am I saying that video game companies design western male characters with the intent of making them ugly? Absolutely not. Most of them just designed them with the intent of making them handsome in a way that conformed to traditional international standards of masculinity
In actuality, all I'm trying to say is, video games very rarely make western male protagonists pretty boys due to a fear of enraging international audiences who have very rigid notions of masculinity. A fear that is very warranted, in fact, considering how vitriolic male gamers get whenever video games have the ~audacity~ to make western male protagonists pretty boys. For example, back when MGS2 first released and Raiden was the protagonist, many male fans went into an apoplectic frenzy of hate, and they justified doing so by saying the 2001 equivalent of "forcing me to play as a pretty boy is ruining civilization and infecting me with effeminate wokeness." So, because of that, many video game companies absolutely refuse to make western male protagonists pretty boys
And honestly, it makes Leon's character design as a pretty boy even more unique and bold. So much so, even, to the extent that, back in 2005, when I was eight years old and first began playing the OG Resident Evil 4 on my GameCube (it was my first Resident Evil game, by the way), I was downright gobsmacked when I first saw Leon, because he was the first western male protagonist in a video game that I saw that was pretty. And I was not the only one feeling this way, because this unique design definitely sent shockwaves throughout the gaming community at the time, as his pretty looks made him stand out among the crowd of gruff and grizzled manly men and turned him into one of the few male video game sex symbols out there. (And thankfully, Leon was cool enough in RE4 that male fans embraced him and his pretty boy status. Funnily enough, they did the same for Raiden once MGRR came out too)
And Leon is most definitely a pretty boy in this game, as even Krauser himself explicitly acknowledges
• Next, I love how they blended Leon's RE2 Remake and OG RE4 designs. Capcom faced the unenviable task of not only maturing Leon's RE2R face (which was and still is controversial among the fandom), but having to do so in a way that bridged the gap between RE2R Leon and RE4R Leon while operating under the looming shadow of the universally beloved OG RE4 design. They knew that, with Leon's status as a sex symbol, they were under especially heightened scrutiny to get this right, and that they would be subject to particularly severe backlash if they botched it. Thankfully, they somehow managed to strike the right balance in this game and matured his face in a way that not only made him very closely resemble the iconic OG RE4 design, but remain recognizable as someone who had once been RE2R Leon as well. Overall, I am supremely satisfied with the results, as they modified away a lot of the issues I had with his RE2R face while still maintaining visual continuity and making him very pretty like his OG RE4 design. Both OG RE4 and RE4R Leons are pretty, and I'm so happy
• Also, I love love love the fact that they made RE4 Remake Leon very visibly traumatized. Everything about his appearance screams depression and PTSD: his cheeks carry hints of gauntness, his gaze is haunted, and the bags beneath his eyes are so deep that they're literally bruised purple. Yeah, while he got a lot more muscular, all of it is just pure rangy muscle, which suggests that even though he exercises a lot, he likely struggles to eat enough, which is why his face is more gaunt than it should be. Also, his haunted gaze just very obviously shows that he's seen things that no human being should ever have to witness. And his painfully exhausted eyes show that he's overwhelmingly sleep deprived because either he is overworked to the point that he never gets any rest or he himself struggles to sleep because of nightmares, or both. In fact, his sleep exhaustion is so severe that there is literally purple discoloration down to his literal cheekbones. This man hasn't seen a bed in years
Yeah, there are a lot of video game characters that are traumatized. However, for the vast majority of them, their trauma doesn't manifest in their appearance in any way. They'll still have bright eyes, full cheeks, and flawless faces. But Leon??? Oh, his trauma is visible from miles away. You can visibly tell that Raccoon City turned his world upside down, that the U.S. government enslaved him by threatening to kill Sherry if he didn't agree to work for them, and that he was forced to re-traumatize himself over and over again by constantly going into missions where he faces off against life-threatening bioterrorist monsters, and that it all took an enormous toll on his physical, emotional, and mental health
• In addition, I adore how his design makes it believable that he's an experienced badass special agent. His default facial expression is calm and stoic, his gaze is visibly jaded, and his entire unfazed mien shows that he is cool and collected. It is automatically believable that he is a seasoned special agent who has encountered these kinds of threats numerous times before. He's seen it all before, and he knows he'll see it all again
• Lastly, on an ending note, I love how Capcom managed to make him look visibly traumatized and seasoned while still keeping his prettiness. It is very difficult to give a character the kinds of visual flaws that usually denote trauma (gaunt cheeks, eye bags, etc) while still keeping them pretty, but Capcom knocked it right out of the park. He's not only visibly traumatized and experienced, but he's also very pretty. In fact, rather than making it so that he's pretty despite his visible trauma and experience, they made it so that his visible trauma and experience actually enhances his prettiness. Those gaunt cheeks and exhausted eyes give him a tragic beauty that cannot be matched
And it makes Leon's character design even more unique since he's not only a pretty boy, which is already very rare for western male protagonists in the video game world, but he's a visibly traumatized pretty boy, which is even rarer
I just..... gaaaaaaah, I love his design, I love his design sooooooo muuuuuuuuuch

Okay, I've watched the first two episodes of The Caped Crusader and am really enjoying everything that I'm seeing so far. It's obviously a send up to the Golden Age (which was a lot more dark and noir than I think people remember), from details like character designs to the general vibe of an early Batman.
One concern about telling stories with an early Batman, though, is the question of how to continue to show us characters we've known for decades, written by creators who have been making these stories for decades, without it feeling like something you've already seen before. That requires reinvention, and new twists on old characters! And I think an animated series like this is a good format for it.
I'm seeing some criticism for the show float around online, but I feel like a lot of the criticism I'm seeing so far tends to come from a place where people wanted this to be another BTAS. Which I suppose I get, since I also love BTAS. But this... isn't that. I feel like I took one look at it and saw "oh, Bruce Timm is trying something different." So lean into letting yourself see what's new.
All of this to say, so far I've been pleased! I've put a few specific details for Episodes 1-2 below the cut, so if you're strict about spoilers just move along.
I like this iteration of the Penguin. Bruce describes her as hiding in plain sight, and it's an interesting play on Oswald's typical need to be seen as powerful or be respected. I don't think that this isn't the case for Oswalda, but she seems to keep a cooler head and get farther for it. I'm hoping she comes back in later episodes, because I want to see her begin taking over organized crime as we continue on the traditional journey of old-fashioned organized crime (Rupert Thorne) give way to the costumed criminal.
I'm really fascinated by this Harvey Dent. Relentlessly campaigning for mayor and decidedly not the white knight figure we usually think of pre-acid Harvey being, I think his dynamic with Barbara and then Renee (in an episode penned by Rucka, of course) really pays off. Here is more of the ego that you may assume Penguin to have. He's obviously a bit of a ringleader among the many crooked cops of Gotham (which, I'm glad Bullock is. This is early Bullock. He sucks at first, then sucks but more ethically) and will continue to play off them as he tries to assume power.
I thought the aesthetics of this Clayface were really well done, and a good example of wondering how you keep old faces fresh. Once Basil Karlo's name was on screen, we knew Clayface was going to be the villain. And while some people would have been perfectly pleased with seeing the same mud-man plodding across the screen, I liked that they refreshed him and gave him a little more of a Phantom of the Opera feel! It leaned on his history as The Terror, and I think it worked out.
Barbara as a public defender is interesting. It lets her be in a position to try to help people, but I'm so incredibly biased and want her to always be a librarian when possible. I'm curious how her interest in justice will intersect with capes and cowls.
And oh, Renee. My beloved. I'm so glad you got back-ported into the Golden Age-ish-ness of it all. If Gordon is already in charge of the police, Batman needs someone to play off of who's making their way through corrupt Gotham City. I think Renee was a good choice for this, because we know enough about her to have some expectations, and then we'll be able to have those expectations subverted.

You know what's hilarious?
(Multi-fandom cross post warning)
The Stranger Things fandom is full of whiny, chronically online babies who demonize Billy Hargrove, an abused teenager. He lives in a toxic household with an abusive father, in a new place that he hates, so it's understandable that he has anger issues and lashes out.
Yet to many pearl clutching fans, Billy is the true villain of the show, not the guy who imprisoned and experimented on children or the serial killer who preys on vulnerable teens like Billy.
Then you've got the Saw fandom (my new hyper fixation), where bitches fawn and gush over Mark Hoffman, Amanda Young and John Kramer like, "They're my precious pookies they're my sweet little meow meows they've never done anything wrong in their lives uwuwuw <3." Even though they're terrible people and literal serial killers.
By the way, it's me. I'm bitches.
Mark Hoffman my beloved, Amanda Young my beloved, John Kramer my beloved. And I can't forget Lawrence Gordon!
Jigsquad my beloved
They're one big dysfunctional family, and I love them BECAUSE they're terrible! That's what makes them interesting! Billy Hargrove haters would think I belong in prison for loving the Jigsquad.
Unlike many Stranger Things fans, I'm an adult who can separate fiction from reality. Saw isn't real, but that won't stop me from enjoying this evil old man and his three evil gay disaster kids.

Spoilers for Batman: Caped Crusader
God this show was beautiful. Obviously it's the same main team that made our beloved BTAS so we already knew things were going to do. The brought back the beautiful meld of 20s art, fashion, architecture, and mob scene while also allowing for the modern representation of women and POC in high esteemed position. All of the men still get what my family has joked of as the "linebacker build" with the occasional skinny man for flavor but the women get variety. Babs has the classic batman woman silhouette, Montoya has broad shoulders, Harley has hips, and Selina got an hourglass.
This show goes back to origin stories but reworks them in a way that made every character exciting, even for someone who probably knows an obnoxious amount about the universe. Some characters were reworked entirely like us getting a female Penguin with sons working under her. While some were more akin to their originals like Harvey Dent (more on him later).
Some characters that aren't seen are name dropped such as Harley mentioning that she studied under Dr. Crane, assuring us that there is still space in this universe for them. Honestly, going into this I was excited that these characters weren't going to be bogged down by the Joker. He's a fun character but there's so much focus on him that other characters, plot lines, and stories tend to get rushed so they can get back to their big money maker. Their decision to keep him out of the first season really helped provide focus for the story being told.
The show balanced its violence well to. I've noticed with a lot of action, especially those with a darker framework like the Batman universe, a lot of the violence kind of blurs together until the creators feel a need to keep one upping themselves to keep the story going and create a shock. I genuinely gasped when "Fire guy" fell. I've been trained that Batman always swoops in to save the villain so having him crash into the car after falling several stories held that shock that the grandiose Joker stunts lack.
I loved Barbra Gordon. Her first appearance I was like "there's Babs" even though they changed her look a bit the essence, the competence, and the caring were all there. I really think they did her justice and I hope she ends up being great representation.
I loved that Jim Gordon wasn't all powerful. A lot of Batman media portrays him as Batman's "guy on the inside" that helps cover things up. They portray him as though he runs Gotham. This Gordon answers to a mayor and has to fight through bureaucratic bs. Alternatively, other depictions try to make him a pathetic guy who is only around to flip on the Bat signal. This show doesn't do that either. They really show the work he is putting in to clean up the force. They show that he doesn't instantly trust Batman and that he tries to do the legal thing until he can't justify ending the good that Batman does.
Detective Montoya. There's a character that not everyone knows but deserves respect. I love them showing how competent she is instead of writing her off as the foolish detective that just gets fired. She is an amazing detective and she works hard to do the right thing. I hope they explore her becoming the Question especially since it doesn't seem like we're making room for Robin anytime soon.
Speaking of Robin, episode 8 hit me like a truck. Right off the bat (heh), name dropping "Dickie" and "Jase" and then showing me their old designs!? Then they go outside and we get a Tompkins name drop!? I love that Doc is giving to the community even if its not as a medical dr she deserved to be mentioned. When Steph was mentioned I started being entertained by wondering how many they can incorporate. When Carrie's name was mention I celebrated. Talk about doing an often forgotten character justice. While it sucks that with 4 of the infinite Robins appear by name in this episode implies that we will not be seeing them in a more major role I do appreciate some of the things that will come of this. I know the fandom loves the Robin's, I am a prime example, but I feel like there is so much love there that any mischaracterization would have been met harshly. This also means no active child endangerment. If they do decide later on to bring on some of the other sidekicks I hope they don't use the name Robin. I know that the name is iconic, so of course they're going to want to use it but without the Grayson backstory it doesn't make sense. This is a real pet peeve of mine, especially with AUs like The Robin King where Bruce named himself that without real reason. They have been doing well so far with renaming where they feel necessary or even skipping over rogue names so I have hope.
Words cannot express how much I have wanted a film representation of Onomatopoeia. The first time I saw him on a screen grab from the comics instantly grabbed my attention. I went down a research hole and I have just always thought he was a wonderful, eerie, and compelling rogue that you just never see. When he stepped in I celebrated. I wish we got more but hopefully we'll see him again and maybe next time we'll get to see some of his more macabre work.
The somehow gave as rich and poor Selina Kyle and I live for it. Recent depictions of Catwoman being a scrappy woman who grew up in poverty are cool but I've always felt like they were just a weak attempt at making her more compelling. The fact that she started as a socialite had always interested me. This telling gives us that while also having her live rough like more modern interpretations because of loosing her funds. It makes sense why she's so good at playing the heiress because she is one. She belongs at those parties.
Dent was wonderful in how subtle but impactful the changes were. He was skeezy from the start. He didn't have this golden child reputation that we tend to get from his backstories. Every interaction we saw throughout the series was painted with him being underhanded and working on the wrong side of the law at times even if it was for the greater good. This was great set up to the part that I really love which is that the melted side of his face becomes his conscience. Typically once his face is melted, things are framed to show the disfigured side to be a corrupting influence, the reason he's willing to commit monstrous acts. In this show it frames that side when he's showing true remorse. It is such a subtle thing but it really highlights that he was always filled with this anger. He was always capable of committing these crimes, but the red tape was stopping him. The disfigurement shows that he is still human.
Harley having a darker motley was teased a lot leading up to this show. We heard that they were exploring her back story without the Joker's influence and that got me excited. I was never a fan of that dynamic but I do understand how she was created and the purpose it served. Making her Asian American was a wonderful choice. She's still unquestionably Harley. I wish they would have brought up some of her gymnast history because I feel its too often overlooked. A lot of people think she got her acrobatics from being crazy. They even gave her a relevant conversation to just drop a little comment about that history but alas. I think she was very well done. They gave her the trademark positive attitude without making it over the top bubbly. They kept the clown motif but justified it by having her make comments on the benefits of humor. Her experiments were dark and twisted without being over the top. They made her queer without making it an afterthought to help move her away from the Joker. Also they gave her a real human body so kudos there.
I mentioned this in a separate post but I really love that Bruce Wayne's voice is the Batman voice and that Brucie is the fake voice. They don't go out of their way to clarify this but the fact that he speaks as batman whenever hes alone with Alfred outside of the Bat stuff he still uses that voice. When he gets concerned for Harvey you can hear his voice starting to slip down into the Batman register like he's struggling to keep up the act.
#I have more thought#I know this is word vomit but it makes sense to me#It is currently 4:40 in the morning#It is important for me to get these thoughts out there though I'm sure they will not be seen#batman#batman the caped crusader

The end..
(Please don’t take my work. Readers +18. WARNING child loss mentioned)
Reader has settled happily with Oswald, but also having a past with the one and only Jeremiah Valeska. Now she needs to officially end things with Jeremiah before going out her husband.
(Y/n POV)
I rode in my limo to pick up my one and only. The doors open as I saw the press sorrond him
"Mr. Cobblepot, What's the first thing you'll do as a free man?"
"I shall lay flowers on the grave of my beloved mother with my beautiful loving wife by my side" my husband said
"what is Jim Gordans role in your recocilnation? do you seek revenge?
"the best revenge against Jim Gordon will be a life serving the city I love, by the people I love" he smiled then stopped when he notice something across the street.
I looked over and saw two men looking at him. He asked one of the press something and I looked back over at the two men.
Oswald got in the car with one of the press0 members. They sat across from me on the back side.
"hello Mr. Cobblepot" I said
"Hello, Mrs. Cobblepot. You looking quite beautiful as always." I blushed,, he smiled then he folded his hat. He wore the suit I sent him, A glass spectcal over his blue eye. He looked terrific in my eyes. He looked kinda hot. Enspecally when he yelled at the Press guy to switch coats and take his jacket. The man then left the car as I laughed.
"oh pengy, I fall in love with you everyday." I smiled
"I love you too, my little birdy" He smiled
"driver, to our next destination. I have an erron to run but after that I'm all yours" I smirked as the car began
,"you better" I laughed as he leaned towards me and smashed his lips onto mine but I quickly pulled away
"don't tease" he groweld kissing me again making me giggle.
When we got to the location I broke away from Oswald as he pout
"stay out of trouble while im gone" I said as I booped his nose
"no promises" He smiled as I laughed then kissed him goodbye
"turn around i won't ask again" Barbra said pointing the gun at the women
I hid behide the wall of the old bar well as I saw the once love of my life,
"surprise" he said behide her. She went hit him but he doge her and pushed her into Ecco who had a knife to her throat.
"easy it's just a surprise party, for you Barbra Keen, in line Queen of Gotham, Buissness Tyson, how exciting. But their was another you. I seem to recall. Wasen't their? Then again thier was another me too. Oh so hard to hold on to what's real. It's enough to drive you mad." he laughed
All of sudden, Barbra daughter ran before I could stop her over throwing a glass where Barbra hit to the flower and turned the knife to Ecco making her stab herself. But Jeremiah shot Barbra in the leg. as the little girl hit him
"cute.. She has your eyes, for now." He picked up the little girl who was still kicking away. He notice Ecco covering her wond
"oh I..I think she nicked me daddy... I.. oh boy" she sighed
"oh dear me, my sweet nongogal, my ecco. Their will be none like you" he smiled
"really?" she smiled. I loaded my gun and shot her. she smiled as she bled out through her mouth and fell onto the floor."
"but she was never you" he said and turned to look at me
"let them go, Jeremiah" I pointed the gun at him
"oh my dearest treasure, look at you, such a big girl" he said hitting the gun against Barbra
"How I missed you, What do you say we play a little game, like old times? Hmm?"
"Barbra, James Gordon will be at your apartment at this second and I want you to deliver a message. okay. okay? okay."
"and what about me?" I asked playing fake hurt
"like always, by my side. My partner in crime, my lover, my dearest treasure. My wife" he laughed
"Hate to break it to you but not anymore, puddin" I said and he laughed
"oh come on, y/n/n. Don't be fussy. Come back to your Daddy, Where you belong, In my arms." He held out his arms but I stood my ground. He began to slowly walk towards me.
"so did we ever did have our baby?" he asked
"no" I said sternly
"No? oh" he said dissapointed
"I lost him... his name was Xander Mark Valaska, after my father.. and his father" Jeremiah stood their
"he was beautiful... Even had your eyes and smile before he passed" I said almost in tears

"hello comssioner, were waiting, the party waiting. But its well pass the princess bed time. It's funny being back here. I can still feel my flesh sizzleing like it melted away. you think so?"
I was tied up to the fence while the little girl hung down on a rope helfd by Jeremiah above the acids,
"Barbra. Miss Mayor, everythings going to be fine" Jim said
"Oh whatever Jim" i rolled my eyes
"personally i think things are far away from fine they can possibly be, Barbra lee. What do I know, I just spent the last ten years in the funny farm." he giggled

"doesn't it funny it was. but i'll admit it was fun planning the fun codmissoner." suddenly metal boomerang swung over hitting him
"who's thier? what do you want? show yourself! show yourself!" Jeremiah looked up in shocked.

"oooh my dearest treasure, easy on daddy their, you wouldn't want to hurt me now would you?" he laughed
"I'm done playing your games. I want to end this once and for all" I said pointing the gun at him. He just smiled as I held the gun. The once of my love, the father of my lost child, my ex-husband, and my childhood best friend.
"you wouldn't dare, you don't have the guts, why do I even bother" he grumbled taking the gun then pointing it at me
"I know slick fella with a cheap suit and cheaper grin telling me what to do! Ever Again! we had mad love once upon a time, But NOW that's OVER MR J" I said. he stepped back in shocked and I kneed im in the gut, climbing over his shoulder and gebbing a pole to turn him. then hopped down behinde him then kicked him in to the acids

Dollar Bin #5:
Linda Ronstadt's Heart Like a Wheel
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/08fb932d8e134ab056304a64aa8ccc1c/647c090448fa1dbd-32/s540x810/4cee7fe084e3baf93f80036a7d7e948ee4fe679b.jpg)
Let's jump straight to one of the best dollar bin records of all time. If you haven't experienced joy and peace regularly through a $1 copy of Heart Like a Wheel for the last 20 years you... are not me. And if you don't yet own a copy, have no fear. I guarantee that one eagerly awaits you in your local Dollar Bin.
I suppose we should clearly define the term "Dollar Bin" before this blog's swelling legion of 17 fans begins to toss the phrase around in an effort to win friends and influence their uncle.
Ideally, a Dollar Bin record actually cost $1. My beloved copy of Heart Like a Wheel meets that exacting standard. A secondary definition would refer to any record priced at a store's baseline rate. That was 25 cents when I started filling my own collection in 1988. Sadly, it's more like $5 in 2023.
But the term more generally means an album that is currently unappreciated to the point where it gets flipped past at thrift stores and yard sales. You're not going to find your coveted copy Ascension or What's Going On in the Dollar Bin, so, great as they are, they don't qualify.
Good old Gordon Lightfoot is lord of the Dollar bin. Snatch him up, and we'll talk about him at length in future posts. Neil Diamond, John Denver and Barbara Streisand provide the Bin's permanent bulk. You already know not to mess with that stuff. Stephen Stills records do not belong in the Dollar Bin. They belong in the garbage, or, better yet, they should be gathered up and hurled into the sun.
But Linda Ronstadt, I shall now argue, is the Dollar Bin's greatest living artist. Let's take a listen:
youtube
The arrangement, the pacing, the aching, yet powerful vocals: it's a perfect cover of a song I hope to never hear by anyone else.
Heart Like a Wheel opens with a song you'll probably hear on AM radio while seeking out this record in your thrift store's dollar bin. You're No Good is one of Ronstadt's problem songs in that it was borrowed from a Black artist so as to make her a billion bucks. Ronstadt began this trend a few years earlier with Rescue Me and carried it to a peak on Prisoner in Disguise a year later, where she covers everyone from Jimmy Cliff to Smokey Robinson. The simple truth is that the people privileged enough to buy records and see popular live music back then (and, I'm sure, still today) were predominantly white, and they felt far more comfortable with the seemingly white Ronstadt than with any of the equally talented black artists of the day. And so Linda's in the Dollar Bin and Aretha Franklin is not. It's supply and demand, people.
Happily, Ronstadt doesn't just karaoke You're No Good; she transforms the song into something swirling and smooth. If You're No Good sounds overly familiar today that's because it's good enough to have spent over 50 years on the radio.
Whenever the reverse happens and a Black artist fabulously transforms a song originally by white artist, that cover's greatness is often lost. Take Merry Clayton's version of Southern Man. Better than Neil himself? Maybe!
youtube
The fun twist on all this is that Ronstadt isn't actually white. She's Latina, a fact her white audience willfully ignored throughout the seventies, then embraced in the late 80's when Ronstadt powerfully forced her identify on them through her earnest and authentic Mexican records.
Ronstadt has always been a front line feminist and champion of progressive and independent ideas in music and popular culture. She dumped Governor Moonbeam in the 70's, proudly embraced being a single mom, cursed out George Bush on stage at the height of the second Iraq war's popularity and took in Linda Thompson when Richard did his own backstreet slide.
Anyone else in Ronstadt's shoes would have been content to sit back and be famous for her incredible looks and incomparable voice. But she hopped genres at a Neil Young pace and consistently promoted marginalized and overlooked voices (Heart Like a Wheel's title track introduced the world to the writing of Anna McGarrigle; a decade and a half later Aaron Neville became a household name thank to Linda).
The popular knock on Ronstadt, of course, is that she was never a songwriter. The familiar and accurate comeback is that she is a masterful song re-writer instead. That skill finds no better manifestation than on her version of Paul Anka's It Doesn't Matter Anymore. Anka's sings the song like he's serving up deviled eggs covered in his own chest hair; Ronstadt serves us ambrosia she smuggled off Olympus.
youtube
Heart Like a Wheel is chock full of bragging points. Ronstadt opens side two by showing that she can rock the mic on When Will I Be Loved. Unfortunately, the insufferable lead guitar work on the track will make you think Stephen Stills himself snuck out your dumpster and into her studio; happily, it's not him, it's multi-instrumentalist Andrew Gold demonstrating why he'd never become a household name. Stills himself was off sucking on an egg somewhere and the track fades quickly into a gorgeous and soulful renegade trucker epic, Willin'. The song gives us the joyfully silly image of Ronstadt smuggling weed, whites and wine across the border in a semi. But it rocks and Linda owns it.
As Willin' fades, we dive right into a truly vital track in the Dollar Bin. I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You marks the first collaboration between Ronstadt and our very own Emmylou Harris. Both women would go on to talk about their relationship, which was born on that track, as critical to their lives. The terribly titled, but otherwise excellent, biopic on Ronstadt, The Sound of My Voice, climaxes with a modern day Emmylou breaking down while talking about Linda's Parkinson's diagnosis. All their future success and art both together and apart is simply and fully presented on I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love With You. They carry Hank Williams' lyrics with perfect, sisterly grace. Mortals quake before them; beasts kneel. If Emmylou is God, Linda makes us polytheists.
So go get in the Dollar Bin. There's simply no better use of a buck than this nearly flawless record.

Y'know what I love, poozers? Comics that explore the fact that cops are all awful! Y'know what I don't love? When they only do that after the old white guy retires an' the beloved latina lesbian takes his job.
Look, we suspend our disbelief in comic books. We believe that a man can fly, and we believe that there's such a thing as a good cop, even though that ain't so. An' comics can examine that in a good way, an' sometimes hold up a more realistic mirror ta' the police. That's a wonderful story that comics can tell.
But seriously? Yer gonna let Jim Gordon retire honorably an' then dump all this on Renee "My Favorite Gotham Cop Since No Man's Land" Montoya? Boo!
