Flash Family Reunion 4
Wally: Okay, guys! We need to figure out who reverse-engineered Brainiac's tech to take over the world!
Wallace: It was Bart.
Wally: Huh?
Avery: After Max came back to life again, he decided to brainwash everyone in the world so no one would hurt him ever again.
Wally: How do you know this?
Jay: He told us.
Wally: Wha-?! Well, why didn't you stop him?!
Jay: Because, it's Bart. He's really cute!
Avery: (chuckles) Yeah, you should've heard him! He was all like; (impersonating Impulse) "All resistance is futile!"
Wallace: (impersonating Impulse) "Those who stray from the path will be corrected!"
Jay: (impersonating Impulse) "Today, a safer Central City! Tomorrow, a safer world!"
Wally: Are you crazy?! How could you not see that he was dangerous?! Actually, now that I think about it, that must've been adorable.
Flashfam: D'aaaaaw.
Wally: Okay, let's take that cutie-patootie down!

Jay Garrick is a better Flash than any of the others. His golden age stories are silly and goofy (he had a group of three stooges rip-offs as sidekicks), he has some of the most fun villians I can think of (the thinker, the shade, etc), and he's also got Greek mythology ties (He wears a Winged helmet of Hermes/Mercury, presumably as a tribute to the God). Also, he's just a lot faster. I read a few golden age stories. Jay's stories move so rapidly and so frenetically that he seems so fast. Half his stories seem to only take an hour (or less). He can catch a crook in 3 minutes; he's just that fast. Jay Garrick is the best. Him and Quicksilver at Marvel are probably my favorite speed based heroes, with Wally West directly behind them in third.

“Everything I’ve ever done as The Flash has been because of Barry and Iris. And the greatest gift they ever gave me was showing me what family was.” - Wally West, The Fastest Family Man Alive.

I like the simplicity of the design for a Jay Garrick/Golden Age Flash action figure. He could have jumped off the page of a comic.

I've been saving all the Barry Allen/Jay Garrick team-ups, because I feel like i'll really like those. Jay Garrick is such an underrated character. I love all the golden age characters. Al Pratt, Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, etc. So those stories may excite me in a way some other issues!might not.
Also, we don't talk about the Golden age villains enough. Barry Allen may have Captain Cold, Mirror Master and The Trickster (all great villains), but Jay Garrick had The Fiddler! Ragdoll! The Shade!!! I love The Shade! For some reason, he left an impression on me when I watched the Justice League show as a kid. And one of those batman shows made me appreciate ragdoll too. So i love these golden age rogues. They're all cool.

SMASH COMICS #14 (September, 1940). Cover by Gill Fox.
This issue presented the origin and first appearance of The Ray, one of Quality Comics' powerhouse superheroes.
Tumblr media
The Ray first appears, albeit without pants. He would have those in the next issue, but then mysteriously be missing his distinct head fin. Art by Lou Fine, who signed his work on The Ray "E. Lectron."
The Ray would later become more well known as a member of the Freedom Fighters in Justice League of America (vol. 1) #107 (October, 1973), almost two decades after DC Comics had acquired all of Quality's characters when that company went out of business in 1956.

Shade/Jay Photo Story
I was working on a sandman story but then I remembered that this picture exists, so I wrote this instead.
Word count: 519 / One-Shot Summary: The ISA sends The Shade to distract the Flash. Characters: The Shade, Jay Garrick, others
Racing across the landscape, Jay Garrick was the first of the JSA to arrive at the small military base. A trail of dust, kicked up by his scarlet boots, hung in the air behind him. The gates preventing unwanted visitors were torn open and the guards who controlled them lay unconscious on the ground around the entrance. The ISA was already in and time was ticking. Jay could see, at the top of the central watchtower, Sportsmaster staring out into the distance.
‘My team must be closing in’ He thought, looking back to confirm. He couldn’t see clearly past the dust but a distant green glow told him enough. Hardly a second was spent with his head turned, but it was long enough. His foot caught something solid. His body twisted as he went down. Just as fast as the fall came the catch. An arm hooked around his back, holding his weight from hitting the floor but keeping the speedster in his unbalanced state.
“Flash” The Shade drew out the word with a coy smile. “How nice to see you’ve made it.”
Looking up at the shadowy man only a few inches away from his face, Jay narrowed his eyes. He shifted his shoulders and puffed his chest before boldly saying,
“Shade! I should have known you’d be working with the ISA!”
“I like a good get together.” Shade shrugged, dropping his smile.
“What a bluff! What are you really doing here?” Jay said, bringing his arms from their unbalanced position closer to his body and clenching his fist.
“What I’m always doing when you come running in to stop me.” Shade responded softly, not breaking the eye contact held between the two.
“I guess I just don’t see the monetary gain in robbing a military base, Shade.” Jay retorted. The Shade’s smile returned.
“Military plans sell well in times of war, Flash.” He explained. “Perhaps you should ask your government what they are doing out here.”
“Flash!” A green light shined across the yard to disorient the villain holding him. The Shade gave a gentle push on Jay’s back to lift him slightly higher off the ground, then disappeared into his shadow. Jay used the distance from the ground to turn at an unseeable speed and catch himself on hand and knee. The light quickly faded, revealing the JSA as they entered the base.
“Are you ok, Flash?” The light’s source, Green Lantern, asked. “From where we were standing it looked like The Shade may have gotten a little too close for comfort.”
“I’m ok, Lantern! Let’s get these guys!” He said before racing towards the tower with his teammates.
The ring beamed bright enough to send Crusher back into the watchtower main room.
“Do you usually cradle your enemies when distracting them? Or is that just for the Flash?” He said, pointing a finger across the room at The Shade who just returned.
“I didn’t cradle anyone.” He answered sharply.
“Focus, they are coming.” Brainwave said, calling all of their attention to the main door. Just on the other side, the JSA readied themselves, then entered.
