The song was originally written by Ashman and Menken to be sung by the enchanted objects to Maurice instead of Belle. However, story artist Bruce Woodside felt that the song would make more sense if it was sung to Belle, the main character, as opposed to secondary character Maurice, and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale agreed.

Thoughts on lucemond

Youse guyse really want to ship Aemond with anything that has a pulse, huh. 👁

The only way I see lucemond working is as a fucked-up episode of The Magnus Archives with The Flesh and The Eye as the main entities. That is to say, body horror with a very salient undercurrent of hate.

Aemond doesn't have any reason to like Luke. He bullies him. He gouges his eye out. Then he exits Aemond's story and he has six years to fester his hatred, while he learns how to live as a disabled person. What kind of warrior is he going to be now with one eye? What kind of dragon-rider? What girl is he going to convince to marry him now that he is disfigured? In a way, Luke fundamentally threatens Aemond's ability to participate in performative masculinity.

Luke is also a second son who gets a very handsome inheritance in the form of Driftmark. He receives it abusively and unfairly; people are murdered on account of him being a bastard. By contrast, Aemond is also a second son, conscientious and deferential, but he gets nothing. Not only that, he doesn't even get justice, since Luke is not punished for taking his eye. No wonder he loses his mind and chases him with his dragon. Luke is the embodiment of everything Aemond hates.

On the other hand, Luke doesn't seem to like Aemond either, even as little kids. He is mean to Aemond and he bullies him. When they grow up, he doesn't show any remorse for what happened and he doesn't apologise, so he must not take any responsibility. The only feeling Luke demonstrates in relation to Aemond is fear. Apart from sniggering at the table.

Barring that, neither Luke, nor Aemond have demonstrated to each other any traits that the other might find attractive. What would be the basis of this relationship? What would they admire in each other? Then there are their conflicting ideologies. Aemond fundamentally believes the throne should be his, but is actually Aegon's, while Luke is fully on Rhaenyra's side.

I see them portrayed very often in fic with this weird domestic fluff quality that comes literally out of nowhere. IMO the only type of lucemond that makes sense is Aemond fantasizing about cutting his eye out and Luke being scared out of his mind. It's a horror story, not a love story.
