All images by Sonja & Alex Overhiser. Couple cooking First published in July 2021 Summer is here, and just like food, it's the best season for cocktails (in my opinion). Summer Cocktails A seasonal berry, stone fruit, or fresh herb theme makes cocktails endlessly fun. This is the perfect time of year for a refreshing bubble or ice-cold frozen puree with just the right amount of sweetness - no alcohol needed! Mocktails are king, even in summer. These refreshing summer drinks are best enjoyed outdoors, whether in the backyard, on a restaurant patio, or poolside. Here are some classic cocktail recipes that are perfect for drinking this season. Each basic recipe is listed at the beginning, along with some creative variations to inspire you. Enjoy! 1. Mojito The Mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail that can be enjoyed in any season, but is best in the summer when fresh mint is in abundance. It's made with plenty of mint leaves, white rum and sparkling water, and can be mixed with berries or peaches for extra flavor.recipe: Classic Mojitovariation: try out Strawberry Mojito, Raspberry Mojito, Peach Mojitoor Virgin Mojito 2. Aperol Spritz A spritz is a bubbly cocktail that's perfect for beating the heat. The most popular is Aperol Spritz, but you can make it with other liqueurs too. The basic idea is to mix sparkling wine (aka Prosecco), liqueur, and club soda in a 3:2:1 ratio. The slight citrus flavor makes this drink even more refreshing.recipe: Aperol Spritzvariation: St. Germain Spritz, Rillet Spritz, Amaro Spritzor Limoncello Spritz 3. Spritzer A spritzer is similar to a spritz, but is a completely different concept. Mix wine with club soda and you have a spritzer. The concept has been around since the 1800s for a reason: it's easy and super refreshing. Use your favorite wine.recipe: White wine spritzervariation: Rose Spritzer 4. Highball Highballs are the height of refreshment. Add alcohol and tons of bubbles! There are many variations on the concept of mixing alcohol with carbonated water. The whiskey highball dates back to the early 1900s. A trendy new variation you've probably heard of? Ranch Water! recipe: Vodka Sodavariation: Whiskey Highball, Tequila Soda, Ranch Water 5. Gin Rickey A rickey is similar to a highball, but contains gin and lime juice. The classic gin rickey was invented around the 1880s, and has since evolved into a popular variation as a mocktail, an infinitely customizable concept. recipe: Gin Rickeyvariation: Cherry Lime Rickey, Raspberry Lime Rickeyor Lime Rickey 6. Shandy A shandy is to beer what a wine spritzer is to wine. Have you ever made a homemade shandy? It's a British drink that dates back to the mid-1800s. Originally beer was mixed with ginger beer or ginger ale, but today's shandies are mixed with lemon-lime soda or sparkling lemonade. Summer Shandies and Grapefruit Shandies (recipe linked below) are a refreshing twist on the classic shandy, with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and grapefruit juice.recipe: Classic Shandyvariation: Summer Shandy, Grapefruit Shandy 7. Whiskey Smash The classic whiskey smash dates back to the 1880s as a Victorian summer refreshment, and many variations have sprung up since then - try any libation and mix in some fresh berries for a twist.recipe: Whiskey Smashvariation: Gin Basil Smash, Berry Vodka Smash, Blackberry Bourbon Smash 8. Moscow Mule The Moscow Mule, a classic combination of lime and ginger beer, is one of the most popular cocktails in the country. The cocktail has spawned countless variations using different liqueurs, and the watermelon version is the perfect summer treat. recipe: Classic Moscow Mulevariation: Mexican Mules, Kentucky Mule, Jinjin Mule, Watermelon Mule 9. Frozen Daiquiri
Frozen daiquiris are a bit 1990s, but we love them. The classic daiquiri is made with lime, rum and syrup, and when frozen it's a staple at resorts and restaurants. It's incredibly refreshing and easy to make as a mocktail. Just mix the ingredients, add a garnish or two if desired, and enjoy.recipe: Strawberry Daiquirivariation: Lime Frozen Daiquiri, Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri 10. Sangria The final drink in our roundup of summer cocktails is a big pitcher of sangria. This Spanish wine punch has been keeping people cool for centuries. Typical ingredients are fruit, sugar, wine, brandy, triple sec, and sparkling or soda water (optional). There are lots of fruit-forward variations that are perfect for this time of year. recipe: Red Sangriavariation: White Sangria, Rose Sangria, Watermelon Sangria, Strawberry Sangria Want to enjoy a refreshing summer cocktail? Some easy gin cocktails to try while you're stuck at home
Tumblr media
Craft Gin is the quintessential spirit of summer. Cool, refreshing, and often paired with tonic water or citrusy flavours like lemon or lime, gin is a favourite among many people throughout the world. Gin cocktails are also easy to make at home; just grab your gin-based spirit of choice like Old Bakery Gin, some ice cubes, and flavourings like cucumber slices for an easy gin cocktail that's perfect for warm weather entertaining!
Some easy craft gin cocktails to try at home include:
- Gin and tonic: one of the most popular gin cocktails in the world, a simple gin and tonic is perfect for when you want something easy but still refreshing. It's also great to serve at parties! To make it yourself, add two ounces of a good quality gin with three ounces club soda over ice cubes. Top off your glass with half an ounce of lime juice (or lemon if that's what you prefer) and enjoy!
- The Aviation cocktail: this classic drink was created by Hugo Ensslin back in 1916. He called it This recipe calls for equal quantities of gin and maraschino liqueur with a few dashes of Crème de Violette, but you can use less or more to suit your tastes.
- Gin Rickey: this is another great drink for summertime and was created in the 19th century by Ted Saucier who worked at The Players Club in New York. All you need are two ounces of gin, four ounces of freshly squeezed lime juice (strained), one-ounce simple syrup, ice cubes and soda water to top off. Add everything into a highball glass over ice except for the soda then stir before topping off with some cold fizzy water. You will love sipping this cocktail in the evenings or with some friends on the weekend.
- Tom Collins: this is another common cocktail served up in bars across the world and it was even voted as one of the top five cocktails you should try before you die! This drink uses two ounces of gin, four ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice (strained), half an ounce simple syrup, ice cubes and soda water to top off. Add everything into a shaker then shake hard before pouring over some fresh ice into a highball glass! You can serve garnished with something like maraschino cherries or olives if you want but sometimes people prefer their drinks plain so have fun with it.

Cherry Blossom Cocktail - Drink Pit Stops Under Tree For Picnic
Tumblr media
Cherry Blossom Drinks, Traditions & Festivities
The Cherry Blossom cocktail is a classic drink which dates back to at least 1930 when published by Harry Craddock. Here in the US, the tree's flowering bloom is probably most closely associated with the National Cherry Blossom Festival in the Washington D.C. area. The annual multi-week event held in parts of March and April celebrates Japan's gift of thousands of trees in 1912 which were actually a second generous gesture to replace the ones they originally donated in 1910 that were lost to disease and insure recovery.
Because of these historical ties and the centuries old custom in Japan where people would picnic under blooming sakura (Japanese cherry trees), you might assume a Cherry Blossom cocktail contains sake or another of Japan's traditional drinks. While there are a couple 'tini' tiny variations and some completely different recipes that do, that's not the case with the classic Cherry Blossom drink.
How To Mix The Classic Cherry Blossom Cocktail
Cherry brandy is what blossoms with fruit flavor in this classic drink and the grenadine in this recipe adds extra red color. All of the coloring if a clear liquor is used. Also contains additional brandy as the base spirit along with orange liqueur and lemon juice.
Cherry Blossom Cocktail Recipe:
1 oz  brandy
1 ½ oz  cherry brandy
½ tsp  dry curaçao
½ tsp  grenadine
½ tsp  fresh squeezed lemon juice
1  cherry
Measure all the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Dry curacao is spicier and slightly more bitter than most orange liqueurs. Substitute if desired or unavailable. Garnish with an optional maraschino or brandied cherry.
The Cherry Blossom cocktail is a great themed drink to serve at parties related to activities in the nation's capital. It would also be a nice alternative or complementary cocktail to go along with, or pit against, the Gin Rickey, Washington D.C.'s unofficial official drink.
D.C. isn't the only festival though. Major celebrations are also in Athens, OH; Bethesda, MD; Boston, MA; Brooklyn, NY; Macon, GA; Nashville, TN; Philadelphia, PA; Portsmouth, NH; San Diego, CA and many more. There's also Traverse City, MI which claims to be the "Cherry Capital of the World" and hosts the National Cherry Festival each year.
All of these occasions and many more, including nothing special, are a great reason to include a Cherry Blossom cocktail on your drinks menu. What's your at home bar mixing up?
More Cherry Brandy Cocktails:
Blood & Sand - blood oranges add a little red color to this scotch drink along with the cherries.
Bulldog - mixes gin and lime juice into this brandy cocktail that has lots of sports team themed tipple twists as well.
French Rose - gin, dry vermouth and fruit flavored brandy garnished with a maraschino cherry.

MidCin’s latest event is cute. But what really caught my eye were the tasty cocktails that showed up in each route! So without further ado, here you go: the cocktail recipes from this event that nobody asked for. Not all names/descriptions were given, so some creative liberties have been taken ^_^
PS The drink mentioned in Byron’s event (Kir) is an actual drink. From France. Which means that France exists in the MicCin universe and Byron took MC there for their honeymoon. Can you say, best king ever?!

This is a special post for all of our newsletter subscribers. As promised in last Tuesday’s message, here’s a classic cocktail recipe - The Gin Rickey - in celebration of Father’s Day weekend. First invented in 1883 in Washington DC, it’s a special toast to all the dads who love a little history and adventure with their drink. ✈️ This selection in particular was inspired by my dad, who was an international jet setter for most of his adult life thanks to his airline executive career. He also had a passion-fueled (yet responsible!) love for gin-based cocktails and history tidbits of any sort. In 2019, He passed so there are t any physical face to face celebrations anymore but wherever there’s the sight of an airplane, the taste of gin or the sounds of a fabulously told travel story there’s my dad,. Luckily, that means he’s never far from a great memory:) Cheers to all you papas of the world who make wonderful, lasting impressions each and every day. Hope your weekend is full of love, happy celebrations and good drinks! 🍸 . . . . #fathersdayweekend #gincocktails #vintagecocktails #dad #ginrickey #happyfathersday #aviationgin https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce7RIIYu77Q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
