The Rory Calhoun Centennial
Born 100 years ago this day, film and television actor Rory Calhoun (Francis “Frank” McCowan. 1922-1999). Do you find him indistinguishable from Victor Mature? I always have. Mature was Italian, though, Calhoun was Irish. He was discovered by Alan Ladd with his shirt off (he was a day laborer) and referred to his wife, talent agent Sue Carol. Prior to acting, Calhoun had been a cowboy, a miner,…

Islands of Identity
Who am I? Why do I do the things that I do? No man is an island.  John Donne the English poet stated that.  And Ernest Hemingway quoted it… and wove it into his stories as a major theme… and proceeded to try to disprove it.  We need other people.  I married an island girl from the island of Luzon in the Philippines.  She may have actually needed me too, though she will never admit it. When I was…

Daily Comic Journal: December 16, 2021: "All Their Originality And Uniqueness Is Gone."
I’m sure the answer to this observation, like the answer to most all questions on life, is money. Cable networks premiered with a distinct idea. They had a mission statement of the type of programming they would offer to the viewing audience and it was good. Then, as the years went by, the bean counters said, “Hey, why don’t we air what EVERY OTHER CABLE NETWORK is airing. It must be popular to…

#TBT. A Three Hour Tour.
A lot of us over the age of 63 or so, grew up watching Gilligan’s Island, a popular TV show during the mid-1960s. For many of us, it was the golden age of television. The video below shares some facts about the series and its popularity. There are a few very interesting things I learned about the show. For us older folks, it provides a trip down memory lane. Ignore the clickbait picture at the…

The Bard’s Plays Continue to Transcend Time
The Bard’s Plays Continue to Transcend Time #fromtheblog
In 1966, Broadway impresario Harold Hecuba stunned critics and audiences alike when he staged Shakespeare’s Hamlet as a musical. Hecuba’s audacious move created a sensation and the Hamlet musical was a hit. The celebration soon was overshadowed by scandal, though, when a group of mostly amateur actors claimed to have not only written the musical but to have staged it for Hecuba in a private…

“It’s primitive as can be”: GILLIGAN’S ISLAND (1964-67)
“It’s primitive as can be”: GILLIGAN’S ISLAND (1964-67)
A tweet making waves the other day from film director James Gunn reminded me of the many hours I wasted spent as a child watching the seemingly endless travails of the seven castaways on the TV series Gilligan’s Island. Being shipwrecked on a desert island with Mary Ann and Ginger did not seem such an ordeal to my pubescent mind, except every now and the group would be threatened by the arrival…

Tina Louise: Ginger Snaps
Tina Louise: Ginger Snaps
Tumblr media
Today I am going to give the mighty Tina Louise three birthday presents. One, this post! Two, I’m going to say that her birth year is XXXX. And three, I’m scarcely going to mention her best known TV credit, even though her performance on that show ranks with The Avengers’ Diana Rigg in terms of catapulting me into puberty. Yet Louise did so much else over the course of half a century, and she…

Richard Donner passes away aged 91
Richard Donner passes away aged 91
It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that Richard Donner has passed away at the age of 91 years old. The sad news was broken by his wife, the film producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Donner’s legendary directing career began in 1960 with directing jobs on shows such as Wanted: Dead or Alive, Route 66, The Tall Man, X-15, The Detectives, The Rifleman, Have Gun-WIll Travel, The Twilight Zone, Man…

Island Dreaming
My favourite show growing up was Gilligan’s Island. As a kid, Bob Denver and crew lavished me with unbridled slapstick hilarity, amidst a setting (and predicament) that fascinated me—a deserted island. What I didn’t realize then, was that creator Sherwood Schwartz’s vision planted a seed that would germinate into a genre-fetish for me, one that continues to this day.
Storylines that revolve…

Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on “Gilligan’s Island”, has passed away at 82
Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on “Gilligan’s Island”, has passed away at 82
For children of the 60’s and 70’s, there was a singular question that had men (and even young men) divided: Ginger or Mary Ann? This comparison was in reference, of course, to the two characters on the 60’s staple Gilligan’s Island. Today we learned that Dawn Wells, the actress who played Mary Ann on the sitcom from 1964 to 1967, has passed away at 82. The cause of death has been listed as…
