"Professor? You had something you wanted to discuss."
He had been shifting in his seat, but froze at my words, then spun back towards me in a heartbeat. "Adam, my boy! Yes. Have you heard of Gardna?"
"No."
"Ah," he laughed, his eyes widening. "This, you must hear. It is a city — no, a country, a land of endless paradise. No pain, no hunger, no worry. A single peak stands tall in a valley surrounded by a mountain range. There are lakes and spires of vines that reach into the clouds, and the black winds of Ashfall descend to nourish and cater the land."
Another of his fantasies, I figured. At the time. I wish now that I had listened to my head, my stupid head, and left that room at once. Why did I have to listen? Why did I have to entertain the man? I could have just accepted his senility. I could have just left him alone in his crazy world, to pursue whatever wild quest he wanted on his own.
Instead, I said the two words I have come to regret more deeply than anything else in life. Pah, the irony of my choice of words, at that. The arrogance to think that I knew what they meant, that I knew what it would be like to imagine. If I could reach back in time and throttle myself, end my life before I ever managed to utter those words, I would. But I didn't. And now, for all of eternity here, they will have always been said.
"Sounds divine," I said.
And Professor Bell smiled.

ADBK: Big Shield Gardna
Tumblr media
Epithet: The Eternal Shield
Voice Actor: J. David Brimmer
Tribe: The Kindred
Biography: The Flame Swordsman isn't the only former braggart among the Arcane Knights; meet Brutus 'Big Bones' Gardna of Deep Valley, a former wrestling star that had never lost a match in his career.
And that's saying something, as Deep Valley is Dinosaur country, and strength is that Tribe's main attribute. He boasted that he could withstand any attack, and even turned down Dark Magician's offer to join him out of belief that he didn't need him.
He was rapidly proven wrong, however, when an army of Fire Reapers attacked the Deep Valley, attempting to take some of their territory.
Brutus was stabbed in the chest by a flaming arrow, and would have died had it not been for Dark Magician summoning a magical mist to both extinguish the fires and heal some of the injury.
Grateful for his help, Gardna chose to join Dark Magician and even became part of the Arcane Knights. To avoid history repeating itself, Gardna gained a mighty shield courtesy of a blacksmith known as the Total Defense Shogun. These days, Brutus is far more cautious than his boastful youth, but will stop at nothing to protect his friends.

I've long considered the idea of Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste in a Dragunity deck, for a couple reasons. The first is thematically it's a pretty good fit, but the second is that Dragunity Knight - Vajrayana is a compatible fusion target we often leave in the Graveyard, making it ideal for Dragon's Mirror. The problem though, is finding a suitable Warrior. The best option I can think of is Destiny HERO - Malicious, since it works very well with Dragon Ravine, plus Elemental HERO Stratos to search it. You could also try something generally useful like Necro Gardna or Junk Synchron, but fitting those can be tough. Idk, I feel like there's something here but I don't know what

Thunder rumbles overhead once more as both Yugi and his Other draw their opening hands.
The two stand on opposite sides of the circles carved into the canyon floor, a mirror of one another.
It should never have come to this.
Yugi goes first and sets a monster face down.
"Partner, I don't want to fight you," the Other protests, even as he summons forth Gazelle, King of Mythical Beasts. As much as it pains him to, he orders the monster to attack Yugi's set monster. On the field, his Gazelle digs its teeth and claws into another King of Mythical Beasts. "The same monster--?!" Other Yugi gasps. He looks down at the cards in his hand and wonders.
Yugi draws for his turn, and again ends with only a single monster set facedown on his field.
Other Yugi draws. His heart pounds in his chest. He activates Polymerization, fusing his Gazelle with Berformet in his hand to form Chimera, the Flying Mythical Beast. He then summons Alpha, the Magnet Warrior. Chimera attacks, sending Yugi's Sangan to the graveyard. Sure enough, that card is in his own hand, too. The Other Yugi hesitates, staring at his Partner's empty field as Yugi adds a monster to his hand for Sangan's effect. Then he takes a deep breath, before ordering the Magnet Warrior to attack directly.
This doesn't make sense.
If they have the same hand, then why didn't Yugi use Monster Reborn? He should have ended his last turn with his own Chimera on the field. That's not a mistake that his Partner would make.
Yugi draws for his turn. "this isn't going to work if we have the same hand," he sighs. He sets a card face down, then plays Card Destruction, demanding both players to discard their hand a draw anew. "there. different hands, different paths, different hearts."
"Partner, why are you acting like this?!" Other Yugi cries. "This isn't you!!"
"of course it is. i'm the reflection of your heart. if your heart is filled with darkness, then so am i."
"No..."
"this is your weakness, other me. you're arrogant. you care too much about your pride, you only want to do things your way. you don't want to face me, so you think i should quit to protect your feelings. you can't save anyone if you're a coward who's afraid to get hurt!"
The cards in the Other's hand shake.
"and you were a king that ruled over people?? what a joke."
"Stop it, Partner!!! I don't want to fight you!!!!"
Yugi looks down at his fresh hand. A sad smile comes to his face, his eyes softening. He takes one card, gazing at it between his fingers. "why is this card in my deck....?"
Other Yugi gasps.
No.
No no no no no.
It can't be.
"oh yeah. i'm a mirror that reflects your heart... your choices..." The field card slot on his DuelDisk slides open, and Yugi places the card inside.
"Don't--!!"
Bright, teal light engulfs him. The Seal of Orichalcos spreads out across the field, trapping both Duelists.
Yugi's eyes turn red as he narrows them at his opponent.
"let's finish this, nameless pharaoh."
Yugi activates his set card, Monster Reborn. Dark Magician girl, discarded by Card Destruction, appears on the field. Like Yugi's, her eyes glow red as she stares down the Other. Yugi summons Obnoxious Celtic Guardian beside her. With the Orichalcos boosting their attack, they're more than enough to destroy the Other's monsters, bringing his lifepoints down to 3100.
Berformet returns to the field from Chimera's effect, and the Other draws for his turn.
He wants to scream. But he summons Big Shield Gardna in defense mode instead.
Yugi summons Queen's knight, then plays Magic Formula to raise Dark Magician Girl's attack. The Other's defenses are useless again, easily destroyed for Celtic Guardian to attack directly.
Now, Other Yugi screams.
"what's wrong, other me?" the way the words drip off Yugi's tongue turn the Other's stomach.
"Partner, stop--"
"no way. i'm just getting started. you wouldn't stop now, would you?"
The Other grits his teeth. It's his turn again.
He doesn't want to do this.
He sets one card face down and summons Giant Soldier of Stone in defense, then plays Swords of Revealing Light. He can stop Yugi's attacks for three turns. He can buy himself time to find another way out of this Duel.
But Yugi chuckles, and the sound chills the Other to his core.
"that's really cute, but i think you know this next one."
Yugi sacrifices Celtic Guardian to summon Catapult Turtle, and the Other watches in horror. He knows this tactic. It's the exact same move that he used against Raphael. The move that he had pridefully destroyed himself with.
"Don't do this. You don't have to do this!! Dont throw you monsters away, Partner, you're better than this! You're better than me!!"
Yugi smirks. "so you admit it then? you admit that you're evil? that you threw away everything you said you loved?" He sacrifies Queen's Knight to Catapult Turtle's effect, launching her past the Swords and into the Other's lifepoints, bringing them down to only 200.
The Other Yugi trembles. Is this what he looked like when he fought Raphael? That wicked, cruel look on Yugi's face now? Is this how all of his enemies have felt, staring down their final moments in his attacks?
"Partner, please!! I can't lose this, or-- Or everyone! Everyone will lose! Doma will kill everyone!"
"oh, now you care about other people?"
Yugi orders Dark Magician girl into the Catapult for his final direct attack.
The Other's heart breaks.
He doesn't want to do this.
He doesn't want to win if it means killing his beloved Partner.
He doesn't have a choice, though.
With a scream of frustration, the Pharaoh flips over his set card: Divine Wind. At the very last second, Yugi's attack is reflected, sent back at him twice as strong.
Yugi's eyes widen. Then soften.
A smile finds its way across his lips as the attack hits, and his own lifepoints drop to 0.
"you won after all, other me," he says as he falls to his knees. "i'm glad...."
The Other Yugi races across the field to scoop the fallen Yugi in his arms. Tears stream freely from his eyes now as he holds his other half close against his chest. Wasn't he just a hollow ghost before? He holds him closer.
"I'm sorry," he sobs. "Partner, I'm sorry."
"why? you passed the test, other me," Yugi says weakly as the Seal fades from his forehead, and the one that surrounds them closes in. "you beat me, even though it hurt you. you put saving the world before your own feelings. you won."
"What now though, Partner? What am I supposed to do now?!"
"keep going." The Seal grows tighter. As the light leaves his violet eyes Yugi utters three last words. "i love you."
The Other chokes. "Yugi--" He hugs his lifeless Partner close as he cries. "Yugi--"
"Yugi--"
Wait.
That's not him calling his Partner's name--
------------
------------
"Yugi!! Yugi, wake up!!"
The Other Yugi groans. His eyes open slowly, only for him to wince against the blinding light above.
"Oh thank god, you're alive!!!" Téa cries.
He sits up to find her kneeling beside him. Surrounding them both are pieces of jagged and twisted metal, not far away lie the larger remnants of the mangled train where he'd dueled Weevil.
"Was that... A dream...?" he wonders aloud as he rubs his head. Every muscle in his body aches and screams. Then he gasps. "Téa! You're bleeding!"
"Huh?! Oh!" Téa looks down at herself, her torn shorts, and shakes her head. "It's just some scrapes and bruises, I'm fine! It could've been a lot worse...." She trails off as she looks toward the wreckage. "Are you okay though?!"
The Other Yugi draws his legs to sit cross-legged in the sand as he blinks a few times, takes stock of his situation, and remembers Yugi.
Was that really just a dream?
It felt so real.
He can still feel Yugi, limp in his arms, and his stomach twists.
Far above the chasm where the two recover, Raphael frowns. So, the Pharaoh did survive.
He'll have to change that.

Duel for the World! Part 2
...and Dartz reveals the ability of his mysterious monster in the back: Orichalcos Kyutora absorbs the damage that Dartz would have taken to his LP. It would have made him immortal... if not for Seto's keen strategizing.
Unfortunately for the Duelists, it also has another effect: When Orichalcos Kyutora is destroyed, it summons another monster...
"I hadn't planned for it to be destroyed so soon," comments Dartz, frowning, "But this only hastens your defeat."
Orichalcos Shunoros (2100/2100) rises from the field, a massive doll made of Orichalcos. Then, its arms detach and move forward as their own monsters. Orichalcos Dexia will have an ATK score equal to the attacking monster's ATK + 300, and Orichalcos Aristeros will have a DEF in the same fashion- but all attacks will be redirected to Aristeros as long as it is on the field. Dartz explains that whenever Aristeros or Dexia battle, the ATK and DEF points they gain are subtracted from Shunoros's scores.
Dartz laughs at Seto and Yugi's shock from this new monster, but it's Yugi's turn next, not his, and Seto's turn isn't over yet. Seto orders his classic-flavor Blue-Eyes to attack Aristeros, dealing Seto 300 LP of damage, but bringing Shunoros's DEF to 0- then he sets a card, and passes his turn to Yugi.
Yugi draws, but finds himself with few options in the face of Shunoros... for his own sake, Yugi plays Big Shield Gardna in DEF position, and sets one of his cards: de-fusion. Surely, Dartz will have some means to disable Seto's Twin-Burst Dragon; De-Fusion is just insurance. However, Yugi doesn't attack. Dartz is amused by this as Yugi passes his turn to him.
"Oh? Are you too afraid of my great monsters to attack, now?" He draws. "Then you'll love what comes next!"
Dartz proceeds to play a spell: Orichalcos Mirror. He discards a monster in order to summon another: Mirror Knight Calling. This monster is played in the back, in DEF mode, and when it comes to the field it summons four Mirror Knight Tokens.
The grand, medieval knights take up the rest of Dartz's front row of monsters and one spot in the back, shields made of mirror coalescing from light onto their off-hands. The blue-haired heterochromatic man explains their effect being that they reflect the ATK or DEF scores of whatever they are targeting, meeting them with equal strength! The Seal of Orichalcos raises each Knight from 0 to 500 ATK, at base.
Then, Dartz raises one card into the air: another Seal!
"Finally, I'll enhance the power of the Seal with this spell: Orichalcos Deuteros!"
Waves of power wash out from the center of the seal, creating a new ring outside of the first.
Dartz forewent reviving Orichalcos Gigas because he knew Shunoros would be more useful, as well as allowing him to continue drawing; he may have started with everything he needs to win, but drawing reinforcements never hurts. Orichalcos Deuteros has a few effects... one of which being that Dartz gains 500 LP for each monster on his field at the start of every turn, and when he plays the spell for the first time. His LP skyrocket.
The mirror knights then attack Blue-Eyes and Black Luster Soldier, with Dexia attacking Gardna in order to overcome its defense and deal Yugi 300 LP of damage. The Mirror Knights lose their shields rather than being destroyed by the equal damage, with Mirror Knight Calling restoring their tokens after each Damage Phase. Dartz grins at them.
"So, you see now that I cannot be beaten! Give up now, Chosen Duelists, and allow my God to remake the world in the light."
"As if," Seto snaps to him, as the turn passes and he draws, playing the monster and emptying his hand again. He attacks with Twin-Burst again, intending to use its Banishing effect to disable Shunoros for good- but Dartz counters with Deuteros's secondary effect, sacrificing one of his Mirror Knights in order to destroy Twin-Burst Dragon instead!
Yugi quickly activates his De-Fusion to save Twin-Burst, unfusing the dragons so that the target of Deuteros no longer exists to destroy. Kaiba is left with two Blue-Eyes on his field and a lot of frustration.
When the Mirror Knight is sacrificed, its armor breaks apart and reveals the face of the monster: Rex Raptor! For the faintest moment his blank eyes and face contort in fear, but then they're gone, disintegrated by the monster destruction visual effect. Yugi stares at where he stood with great conflict in his face.
Who are the rest of the Knights, then...?
Seto isn't phased at all, huffing to subtly express his frustration as he passes his turn to Yugi.
Yugi doesn't want to hurt his friends, but he can't leave himself defenseless, either. He uses the Polymerization in his hand to bring Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon onto his side of the field, and she roars again, vengeful against Dartz and his dark monsters. But he's too scared to attack his remaining friends. He sets a card, then passes his turn to Dartz again.
Dartz smirks. "So, you leave your ally without his most powerful monsters in order to protect your own life points... cowardly, Nameless Pharaoh. I expected better of you. But that's why your soul will feed my God so well."
Dartz attacks Seto, destroying his monster and taking down his LP to demonstrate to Yugi the consequences of his selfishness. Seto stumbles, but straightens after he catches his breath from the Solid Vision blows, nodding to Yugi to reassure him that he'll be fine. It's his turn, anyway.
The card Seto draws is fortuitous, refilling his hand for basically no cost at all except his having to discard his entire hand after 5 turns have passed. He doesn't think the game will last that long. One card is set beside his first, still untouched since his first turn, and he resurrects Blade Knight in order to summon in Kaiser Glider. At the very least, Kaiser Glider will protect him from the Mirror Knights, but it doesn't give him anything viable to attack Shunoros or its auxiliaries for now. The turn passes to Yugi.
And after Yugi draws, he smirks, showing Kaiba his card: Mirror Force. If they can get Dartz to attack (which he surely will, trying to kill Seto), all of his attack-position monsters will be destroyed. Seto smirks, too, as Yugi sets the trap, then passes to Dartz.
"Oh? So confident now, hmm?" Dartz teases, drawing again. "Whatever it is you've drawn, it won't win you this game. You haven't seen anything yet!"
Dartz plays the spell card Orichalcos Twin Centaur, targeting one of his Mirror Knights and Twin-Burst Dragon. Unfortunately for Yugi, Twin-Burst is destroyed... and he's taken down to 700 LP.
Our heroes are in a tight spot!
Dartz then swings on Seto, fully intending to leave both Duelists defenseless so that he can win easily with his other monsters--
But just as he orders Dexia to attack Kaiser Glider, Yugi activates his Mirror Force. At the same time, Seto activates Ring of Destruction! Orichalcos Shunoros is destroyed, and with it, Dexia and Aristeros- and the Knights' shields shatter, no longer renewable without Mirror Knight Calling. Dartz gasps.
"NO! This wasn't supposed to happen yet! You have to suffer more before you're ripe enough to sacrifice!"
Alas, this would be Dartz's only chance to summon his ace monster for free. He pays all of his bountiful Life Points and discards his hand.
Dark clouds manifest on the field, red and teal lightning sparking through them.

What Gunmars reaction that Jim's basically using Bulars DNA to become Dark Gardna?
Maybe he doesn't know what DNA is, just that the human shapeshifter took something from his son to be able to transform into Dark Gardna.
He didn't know Dark Gardna came from Bular until a bit later. The divide in the Janus Order practically slowed down the flow of information for everyone. It does enforce Gunmar's desire to covert Jim into his army.
The boy is now the remaining remnants of his lost son. JIM WILL BE HIS.

Today's "ChronoXAngel" spotlight is "Nonami Ise", actual name Maria von Orlok. Nonami is 273 years old at the start of the series, born October 13th, and is a member of Vampire high society. Despite her lofty status she still devotes much of her time to protecting both monsters and humans as a member of GARDNA, a peacekeeping organization founded with just such a goal. Nonami's current partner within the organization is Rei Kobayashi, a Red Oni. The pair meet Usoko when the young girl is being hunted through her school after hours by a Blue Oni. Nonami faces the Oni 1v1, and momentarily defeats her but is tricked by an illusion and sent flying.
Nonami's main weapon is a cross-shaped spear known as the "Breakdown Spear", which can split into smaller copies to incapacitate or restrain an enemy via crucifixion. She also has some magical abilities such as flight and limited energy projectile powers.
Nonami in her human form is 4'11, with pumpkin-orange hair and iridescent blue eyes. In her Vampire form she is 6'1, with jet-black hair and glowing red eyes. In both forms her skin is quite pale, though more akin to porcelain in her Vampire form.
Nonami sleeps in a coffin filled with dirt from her homeland of Germany, and so sleeps in the nude as to not dirty her nightgowns. She is not supernaturally bound to do so, she simply finds the dirt comforting.
Read more about Nonami in "CHRONOXANGEL", a novel series written by yours truly!!

Actually it's about the fact that Atem is subtly represented as a knight, though.
Black Luster Soldier being the ace card he's associated with apart from Dark Magician. Black Luster Soldier being the card he used when he first realized Yuugi's strength. Black Luster Soldier being "light and darkness intertwined" where he realized the strength of kindness and gentleness.
The fact that the cards he uses that aren't support for his magicians are usually knight cards or warrior cards. Elf Swordsman, the King's/Queen's/Jack's Knight cards, Buster Blader, Gaia the Fierce Knight, Big Shield Gardna. He uses a lot of high fantasy cards, true. Holy Elf, Berfamet, Curse of Dragon, Summoned Skull. But he's most often associated with knights.
He's got the gods, true. But those are an inheritence of Kingship. A divinity pressed upon him. He's associated with demons, but again, that's an inheritence of the Items and their curse. He's associated with darkness, but that's an act. Mai directly calls him out on this.
What he beats Kaiba with--what he uses to Pierce the Darkness with--is Dark Paladin.
His magician--his best friend--combined with a knight.

So Episode 48.
Brainwashed Yuma uses "boku", instead of "ore".
Astral initially gives last of his strength to make Yuma remember his memories with him, allowing him to Summon Gagaga Gardna to buy time.
Due to III's crest, the cast can see him for the first time properly.
When III uses his crest to destroy Astral, and later on trap Numbers Club, Barian red lightning appears, confirming this is indeed power of Chaos.
After Yuma is attacked, the Numbers Club save him. Takashi is initially states that AR projection will not harm Yuma, but Tetsuo reminds him Yuma is hanging on bridge's ledge, causing Takashi to briefly remove his D-Gazer.
The crystal prison Numbers Club trapped in has a blueish color initially, but then glows like pieces of Orichalcos.
Kotori has Emperor's Key for now (this will be repeated several times in ZEXAL II), but Kazuma in the ship inside Emperor's Key reactivates Emperor's Key, causing III's crest to break, and Yuma to remember Kattobing.
(The themes here will be repeated for ZEXAL II several times.)
During this episode, we see previously off-screen flashbacks of Yuma & Astral.
Yuma states Number 39 is the last hope Astral entrusted to him, this will be repeated for Kaito vs. Mizael moon duel, when he calls Yuma last hope (leading to the recent card Numbers Last Hope).
This time around, it is called "flame of hope", rather than "light of hope".
The special attack Utopia uses here is called Hope Sword Twin Blade Shoot, or Rising Sun Twin Blade Blast, which might become its own card.
III Summons Number 6, which equips Number 33 to the its abdomen hole. Its effect is called Orichalcum Gate, obvious Doma reference (which Shin Yoshida also wrote, of course).
