that’s what i assumed too when the localization was announced but like shouldn’t tobias gregson, enoch drebber, selden, etc have theoretically also had that rule applied to them??? why were certain borrowed characters left completely unchanged and others localized Like That. not that i pretend to understand international copyright law or whatever the hell the conan doyle estate is doing at any given time but that seems weird to me lmao

Getting really into Destiny 2 lately, and so far, it has been a blast.

The music, the artwork, the lore, is just right: a well‑designed world with well‑designed elements, all fitting together.

And you know what? Playing a game mostly played by dads and moms is a relief: maybe, after all, there is hope for adult media offering mature entertainment through its themes, rather than its visuals and scenes.

A ‘complete package’ in what I would call recreational (electronic) media (after the Irem rebranded meaning) has always interested me the most: a solid art direction is invisible, because it makes a thing complete. Roleplaying games, tabletop games, video games. Nerd stuff.

Incidentally, on the topic of video games, I have been looking for ways to get into R-Type (finding archived manuals has been fun) and a variation of Mega Man as well, but that is one of those slower processes.

Slower processes are slow because if you try to speed them up, they end up consuming so much energy at once, you are basically incinerating yourself. I prefer catalyzing at room temperature.

So far, I am enjoying my summer break quite a bit.

Whumpers, what are your earliest memories?

Mine is from when I was about two or three. I was in a stroller, at my cousin’s Irish dancing recital. After the recital, my aunts were talking down to me in the stroller, and to each other. I was experiencing extreme anxiety because I couldn’t understand what they were saying, when I felt I should have been able to communicate with them like they were communicating with each other. I was also very tired and dazed. I did not cry though… I probably looked normal on the outside.

I also remember when I was about four or five, I went to the beach with my dad and one of his friends. I somehow found my way onto the dock, planted my little rear end on a jet ski, untethered it from the dock, and started floating into the sunset. There was an old lady lounging in a donut inflatable out some way; she said something to me, but I couldn’t understand what she said, despite trying really hard. I’m assuming it was something along the lines of “Oh my god get off that jet ski you’re going to fucking DIE, kid,” but again… couldn’t understand a word of what she said, and got frustrated because she was speaking English (without an accent) and I should know how to understand adults speaking English to me.

At this point, my dad is yelling at me from across the water, and a young lifeguard drags the jet ski back. On land, my dad lectured at me very harshly as he led me back to the car. I didn’t know I had done anything wrong, and was very confused. At some point this guy starts quoting the Bible at me, and the only thing I could pick out were the words (spoken very emphatically), “Your days are numbered.”

“My days are numbered?” cue a vivid mental image of a calendar, with dates listed for every day of the week, “What does that mean?” Later on I figured out this was the Bible’s way of referencing death at God’s hand which just made me even more confused as to what I did, until at age thirteen, I figured out, “Oh a baby who can’t swim floating on a jet ski is terrifying, actually.”

Since I got my feed‑server up and running again (which means I also got my feed reader apps pointing to this main hub), I am now tuned back into what the design and art world is doing, above a certain threshold of notability of course (for the cool stuff I still need to dig into it, talk to people directly, you know, get a connection; magazines and websites can’t reasonably be expected to allocate resources to writing articles for single‑digit audiences).

There is a new short series on ARTE called “Change by Design”, which you can check out here. I will watch it later as well. It seems to revolve around sustainable products, so I know the products are not for everyone, for various reasons.

I personally like to keep that connection I have made last year to the arts and crafts community, during a seminar for my alma mater’s alumni about what we call “Kunsthandwerk”.

Fuck the Band AU (affectionate), because that’s what it’s all about, right? Raw attraction, carnal indulgence, “making beautiful music together.” It’s mostly fun and a little dangerous—always a good time

Marry Florist AU. It’s sweet, it’s stable, there’s nice symbolism… in a Florist AU, nothing can hurt you, not even bees.

…Unless your flower store is all about money laundering and (plot twist!) it’s been a mafia front all along. Anyway I did end up executing on that idea (no pun intended…or is it? 🔪🔪🔪☠️), but since the Jujutsu Kaisen cast happened to be a better fit, the OPM-verse is safe from me..for now.

You see, as I was brainstorming the Money Laundering Florist AU, it lead me to marry all the Flufftober and Whumptober prompts into some terrible, 31 day bastardization of two wildly disparate fandom events. Anyway, I hope for everybody’s sake Flumptober doesn’t take off—especially mine—but who knows. Maybe it will become tradition.

By process of elimination, this would lead me to kill the “soul mate au,” but as I’ve taken a personal vow of nonharming, I won’t be killing anything, which makes the ant problem in my office a bit of a sticky wicket.

I don’t the soulmate au needs to die, but I do believe it could benefit from more reincarnations. I think about how often we attribute strange, conflicting feelings to noumenal elements like the spirit or soul. And while I’ve never neither fully believe nor disbelieve in such things, I find myself leaning towards whimsical thinking when I want to escape the reality of something—historically, a bad romantic relationship. I feel like I’ve seen other friends experience more or less the same (especially late teens / early twenties). It’s hard to conceptualize healing from a broken heart when it hasn’t happened to you yet.

Anyway, even if soul mates are a scientific given, there’s still uncertainty in real science—even a seemingly straightforward diagnosis—so I thought it might be interesting to apply that same uncertainty to the concept of soulmates. I’m thinking back to okCupid algorithms, how you answer a litany of questions and get a percent match. I met my nest partner on okc and we eerily always order the same things, which makes sense since food / drink preferences were some of the questions asked.

Or what about different flavors of soulmates? Why just one kind, or just one soulmate? I (briefly) worked in a linguistics lab (even though I’m not really cut out for research), because I felt such a deep and immediate affinity for the grad students and faculty. We were on the same wavelength about pretty much everything except for how lack of diversity consistently and profoundly impedes developmental psychology research. I’ve (seriously) joked that my senpai John is my creative soulmate because we’re always absurdly on the same wavelength and people sometimes think we are dating if they see us together. (We are not flirting, we are “yes, and”-ing and they are not the same). But I do feel that way, that there are other types of otherworldly bonds aside from the standard romantic ones. My best friend and I were born exactly six months apart and I’ve always felt there was something auspicious about that.

And, of course, I’m a huge fan of The Good Place take, which is that “If soulmates do exist, they're not found, they're made. People meet, they get a good feeling, and they get to work building a relationship.” Because as I get older I find that the most fulfilling and beautiful aspect of a relationship is not that it just magically works, no matter what, it’s that I commit to making it working. Repeatedly. Every day. I think that this is a massively underutilized approach when it comes to prickly characters, because it can show two partners working to change behavior and strengthen communication as opposed to potentially excusing a “ride or die” mentality.

I had a whole rant about the unbearable lightness of being, but I decided to spare you because this is a Wendy’s an anime blog 🤷‍♀️
