ok but i will NEVER be over the look on Hiccup’s face when he slowly realises that the reason Toothless destroyed his new tail and pulled out his old saddle is because he only wants to fly if it’s with Hiccup, together, instead of on his own

like Hiccup almost always has a dry, sarcastic remark or comeback for pretty much everything, but in this moment he was completely speechless because he was so overwhelmed and awestruck at the affection from his dragon

I love Astrid in gotnf so fucking much it's insane.

Like, fueled by some kind of manic behavior caused by Stormfly's absence, she fixated on making 'new holiday traditions' to distract herself from the fact her best friend is gone help the village, and basically got the pre-httyd1 Hiccup treatment.

She just wanted to help, and instead accidentally set the village on fire and blew up houses, got mocked by Snotlout and the twins, and was (probably for one of the first times ever in her life) looked at with nothing but disappointment from the adults.

(Only difference is she was actually trusted to clean up the mess she made whereas Hiccup was not due to fear of him accidentally breaking something even more)

While she was fixing the roofs she was probably thinking to herself 'I just wanted to help, but all I did was make things worse.' And I wonder if she realized this must be exactly how Hiccup felt for years.

And they literally turned Light Fury into a tampon with glitter, a dragon Barbie, etc. The whole point of her design is not in the "sea theme". NO. It's the fact that she is so smooth and feminine stupidly because Toothless needs an ideal female, so that even a one-year-old child can understand that she is a WOMAN.They turned graceful, sarcastic Toothless into a fucking slobbering muscular dog with giant eyes, removing the last drops of intelligence and elegance from him (probably because males can't be elegant, right???). I agree with you on some points, have some extra opinions, and disagree in some places. I don't like what they did with the movie, it was inconsistent with 1 & 2. They were trying to hard to tie it back to the books and forgot about what they built outside of the books, and as someone who has read and watched both it makes me sad because they were both great independently. I understand they needed to end it (Or not since there's an upcoming live-action but I digress.) and they did it decently with what they had. It was always going to be sad, but I feel like they could've done better with the plot, in the end it was a good movie but only okay to a hard-core fan. (I happened to be one.) I know they wanted to end with a win and that's why Grimmel and the hu ters were deafeted, but it would've been better if there was still an actual not nullified threat. If we could see the danger just on the horizon so they sent them to safety then the win would be seeing the dragons had escaped and had families years later. I don't like how they villianised deathgrippers, "There are no bad dragons just bad people." -Valka. As for the lightfury design I'm actually ok with that, as you see in the hidden world the whole species, even the male lightfuries, look like that. It's unique, no other dragon is as glossy or shiny, but it makes sense other dragons have been fighting and getting tougher while in the hidden world lightfuries just chill out. I would've very much liked another nightfury, but the show did reiterate in just about all things httyd that Toothless is the only one, but at least he now isn't alone. (Also side note watch the short homecoming it's nice to see Toothless never forgot Hiccup.) I agree I think Toothless's design wasn't the greatest in the third movie (my fav versions of him are httyd 2 and gotnf). As far as his design goes I think they leaned more towards an expressive dog than they were trying to make him more masculine. Thanks for the ask!

Humanizing Dragons and Dog-izing Toothless

Been a while since I've posted HTTYD analyses, so thought I'd pull a clip from last night's stream where we went in depth talking Dragons!

Concepts more or less in clip:

Fandom dumbing down dragons to the point of hapless pets versus treating dragons the same psychologically as humans

The middle ground - treating dragons as a separate species, highly intelligent animals

HTTYD franchise depicting dragons from a naturalistic perspective

Toothless's mannerisms being a combination of creatures in the first film - cat, rabbit, horse, dog, etc. but the balance of those traits shifting to dog-like prominence by HTTYD 2

Shifting Toothless's traits after already being an established character is a disservice to the character we fell in love with

Toothless in the HTTYD 1 era - including small humanizing moments in GOTNF and why everything felt congruent

Toothless increasingly being treated as a cute gimmick for audience appeal instead of as an independent character

lil nadders and lil mounstrous nightmares are literally friend shaped. how could i not think of squishing them???? its not a want. ITS A FREAKING NEED. I NEED TO HUG A BABY DRAGON RIGHT NOW 😭
