1700s WOMEN - PART 2
Lace as a luxury was carried over from the 17th century, used as a status simple for the wealthy to flaunt. From the mid-century on it migrated to the neck in the form of delicate chokers, which were a fashionable alternative to traditional jewelled necklaces. As hairstyles became larger hat styles became smaller until they were discarded altogether for a time, followed by extremely large hats that accommodated the curls, plaits and frizzed hair beneath. You know what absolutely fucks about Austen? Being some little old ladies companion. I just can imagine me and my grandmother waltzing the countryside, chatting shit, I read to her due to her bad eye sight and play the harpsichord or something. People ask when I will marry and my grandmother beats them off with a stick because I'm Her Companion and will not leave her for some Man.
#only in an austen scenario im a woman cuz men have two roles love interest or villain (or both) and i dont have time for that shit#i gotta takencare of my grandmother#does anyone else understand this urge?#jane austen#pride and prejudice#northanger abbey#mansfield park#georgian era

Friends! Once again I am looking for BOOKS. HISTORY BOOKS!!
I want to look into the word of Georgian/Regency era zoology, but I've no idea where to start. Does anyone have any recs for books on the topic, or more broadly on women in science in this era?
I'd quite like something like an overview, or even recs for studies/books/articles from the time. THANKS Y'ALL.

Some of the surviving clothes and personal belongings of Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)
1) a favorite white waistcoat originally belonging to King George II (1683 - 1760) bearing their shared initials; Byron wore this on his wedding day
2) a red embroidered jacket from Albania
3) a green fur-lined jacket given to him by Edward Trelawny
4) a linen undershirt of his which Lady Byron kept after their separation
5) a gold embroidered vest from Albania
6) a ring, thought to be his engagement ring
7) a pocket-watch bearing the Byron family crest
8) pair of boxing gloves; pugilism was big in 1800s london & like many male aristocrats at the time, Byron took lessons at the academy of famous boxing champion John Jackson
9) a small infant’s orthopedic boot; one of the many unsuccessful attempts to treat the congenital deformity of his leg & lifelong limp
10) a 32in/83cm belt with the head of Nike/Victory worn in his last months in Greece during the Revolution; a popular symbol during the war.

Evening dress, American, c. 1820
The MET Museum
"The puffing is a rare intricate feature executed completely by hand and shows the typical decoration locations of this period, with shoulder and hem details. The one surviving long sleeve indicates the dress could be worn with or without sleeves to suit the occasion and the weather."

1700s WOMEN - PART 1
The commencement of the 1700s saw women's hair styles stay fairly demure, but it wouldn't take long for them to become much more elaborate. The popularity for wigs in men's styles crossed over to women, and as such hair styling opened up to wider experimentation. The development of heated curling tongs - paired with wool pads and wire supports - helped achieve the voluminous dos synonymous with the era. CC links and reference images under the cut.
