Katniss Everdeen: The Mockingjay
Creator Notes:
Tumblr ate my long ramble about stuff, but here is a more abbreviated version of what it said. This webweaving and the last one paralleling Katniss and Snow as defined in some ways by their actions. Obviously, the two chose to act very differently, but I like how it emphasizes the importance of agency.
Also this doesn't quite capture the dehumanizing nature of becoming a symbol (an attempt was made: 3rd quote and only showing Katniss' face once), but it does focus more on becoming a symbol/message making you larger than life. You are the message, so your actions are the message. Still, Katniss' choices and actions led to people choosing her as a symbol of the ideals of the rebellion.
Did any of that make sense? I'm unsure. This is much simpler than my last webweave, but it's been rotating around in my brain for a while!
This webweaving combines some of my favorite dystopian/post-apocalyptic media:
First and last quote Ch. 27 of Catching Fire
All gifs made by me from the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay Part 2 films
Second quote Ch. 29 of Nona the Ninth
Third quote Ch. 3 of Mockingjay
Fourth Quote Ulysses' Final Message (Fallout New Vegas)
Penultimate quote Ch. 26 of Catching Fire

I wish people would double-check their information.
Someone said Effie in Mockingjay was imprisoned by District 13 and tortured.
That's false— that was Katniss' prep-team. District 13 had no idea what happened to Effie, which she was presumed dead (page 182) due to Portia and Peeta's prep crew being executed.
Effie replaced Fulvia Cardew in the film adaptation due to her popularity among fans.

I just realized, if Livia Cardew married Snow which is what is implied in the epilogue, it means both the first lady and the president have family members on the side of the rebels in Mockingjay with Fulvia and Tigris.
If even members of your family are on the side of rebels, maybe you are the bad guy ?

One of my favourite things about Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the little easter eggs. Like the familiar last names of students you realize are ancestors to some familiar characters!

What if the Cardew family went against Snow/The Capitol after realizing Coriolanus killed his wife (let’s pretend it’s Livia for this idea) by poisoning???

Incorrect Hunger Games Quotes
Effie: Fulvia didn't win the contest because she's a good kisser. She won it because they wanted someone REALLY old like her.
Plutarch: Old? Oh, that's preposterous. I mean, what is she? Twenty-nine? Thirty?
Effie: Oh, please, to what power? I mean, do we really know how old she is under all that makeup? She could be …
Haymitch: Your age.
Effie: … That's right. She could be close to for--get it, Haymitch!

I'm going insane, I have to say something so in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes it is implied that Snow marries Livia Cardew right? BUT in Mockingjay we meet Fulvia Cardew, this raises many questions. One, why would a relative of Snow be in District 13? Two, why would her last name still be Cardew? Three, why would this not be brought up if she had any relation to Snow? If feel like that would be important! It just makes no sense and it's driving me insane

"Mockingjay", Chapter 3
Part 1: The Ashes
Chapter 3: That night while her mother and sister are sleeping, Katniss goes through her items from the arena to find the pearl that Peeta gave her. Prim wakes up and gives some good advice. Katniss describes the food situation at District 13. In Command, Katniss tries to make her list of demands. There is some back and forth. Coin does not want to give the abandoned victors immunity. Eventually it is settled and Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay. Plutarch gives her Cinna's sketchbook. Fulvia doesn't think Katniss looks good enough. She and Plutarch lead Katniss and Gale to a compartment... where the Preps are being held in miserable conditions.
Thoughts:
-- Katniss insists on having "Gale" as one of her conditions, but doesn't explain exactly what she means by that. It leads to some confusion. I think it means she wants him as like an ally in the arena. Her hunting partner. But I do wonder if Gale knows that at this point.
Quotes:
She's really gone, then. The little girl with the back of her shirt sticking out like a duck tail, the one who needed help reaching the dishes, and who begged to see the frosted cakes in the bakery window. Time and tragedy have forced her to grow too quickly, at least for my taste, into a young woman who stitches bleeding wounds and knows our mother can hear only so much.
No more baby Prim.
The very notion that I'm devoting any thought to who I want presented as my lover, given our current circumstances, is demeaning.
Sometimes I wonder if this is a meta comment on the Publisher asking her to put a love triange in a book series about war because it worked for Twilight.
"What do you say, President?" asks Plutarch. "You could issue an official pardon, given the circumstances. The boy…he's not even of age."
I think this is a good point from Plutarch. Later Coin will say 13 wouldn't do anything to Annie because she is "fragile". But Peeta is 17 and a hostage, yet Coin wants him on trial for war crimes.
For the first time ever, I see the hint of a smile on the president's lips. "When the time comes, I'll flip you for it."
What personal grudge do we think Coin has against Snow? There must have been some interaction between 13 and the Capitol in between TBOSAS and this series. Otherwise, why does she care?
From behind door 3908 comes a sound. Just a tiny whimper. Like something a cowed dog might make to avoid being struck, only all too human and familiar.
The Preps are often described similar to animals, though not necessarily in a negative way. Katniss thinks of them as oddly colored birds in her first encounter, and later more like pets.

See, the Capitol rebels aren't so bad. Fulvia's "We Remember" propo series idea. Genius.

Love me some father/daughter dynamics so Fulvia Cardew is in her mid 20s and Plutarch figured he couldn't leave that kid behind in the Capitol. His plan is bigger than the wellbeing of individuals, but Fulvia had to be taken along

my tigris theory is that snow developed the stylist position with her in mind. he tells her it’s a thank you for all she did for him growing up, but they both know how she feels about the games. they both understand it’s not a reward, and it’s certainly not the honor he presents it as, but rather a means of exerting control. it’s a warning to her that there are lines he won’t even allow her to cross. out of family loyalty, he won’t kill her just yet, but he will keep her in line.
snow pretends to level with her, and tells tigris it’s a chance to help the tributes before they reach the arena. make them fashionable, desirable, and they can win sponsorships that can save their lives. but really, he’s forcing the same punishment on her that he does the former victor mentors—make them get to to know these terrified, oppressed children year after year, be their only hope, and watch them die a brutal death. that’s why the stylist is the last person to see the tribute before the games.
tigris turns out to be every bit as successful as snow promised her she’d be. her style is emulated by every capitol citizen, and her tribute, game after game, is always the envy of every other district’s tributes. each year, though, she is increasingly horrified by the barbarity of the games and, more importantly, of her cousin.
the straw that breaks the camel’s back is when tigris finds out that snow is selling tributes. everyone knows, of course, that they’re related, but the connection between them now sickens her more than it ever has. but as a brilliant mind in capitol fashion, if there’s one thing she knows how to do is to remake someone. she’s thus far been known as “tigris snow,” and decides to start surgical alterations to distinguish herself as simply “tigris.” the farther she can get from the snow name, from the shameful man that grew from the coriolanus she raised, the better. no one understands the desire to distance themselves from their family, to make a different mark on their legacy, better than fulvia cardew and plutarch heavensbee, and they become fast allies, if not friends.
and many years later, as tigris ages and her time in the spotlight comes to its natural end, she takes on an apprentice, a promising young stylist who has misgivings about having such a role in the games. she grows to trust this man who demonstrates such subtlety and courage in his work, believing wholeheartedly that his intention is to help the tributes maintain a sense of dignity before their almost inevitable death.
when the time comes for him to enter the stylist pool for the games, his talent could afford him a chance to work with just about any district he wanted. and yet, cinna remembers what tigris once told him about a young girl from district 12, and how she not only beguiled the whole country, but president snow himself. a spark of passion that grew into an insurmountable flame…
