Reading Response 11
Very unusual in the ambiguity of its design, it is unclear whether Funny Boy by Shyam Seladurai ought to be considered a novel or rather a series of short, loosely connected stories. Considering that the events of each story/chapter occur in progressive, chronological order, I’d be inclined to say that the book is more of a novel than a collection of short stories except that often the events of one chapter aren’t referred to explicitly again. Yet, they are certainly all connected through the first person protagonist who matures as the book progresses. His gradual understanding of the world around him and the gravity of the situation his family is in is what connects each section.
After going back and looking at the chapter titles I can’t say that I see how they would provide a clue to or actively contribute to tying the stories together. If anything, I think the titles provided distance the stories from each other all the more. The first chapter is a play on an expression, ‘when pigs fly’, the second is a name, the third is an obvious allusion to a proverbial principle: ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’, the next two chapters, ‘Small Choices’, and ‘The Best School of All’ sound rather like they’d be the titles of two different books given the drastic difference in their structure, and the last chapter title again uses a completely different format: ‘Riot Journal: An Epilogue’ which, given the colon, implies that the entire work is called ‘Riot Journal’ and ‘An Epilogue’ is one piece of this journal, but while that would have connected the stories very clearly (making each chapter a chapter in the ‘riot journal’), because only the last chapter is so named, the all remain disconnected by format and content.
Conversely, I think that in some ways the gaps in time, though they’re long and few and far between and a very unusual stylistic choice for a novelist, do more in furthering and connecting the story to itself than the chapter titles. I never found the gaps jarring, and while they do serve to keep each section separate, because we are following the same narrator, these gaps to me represent all the time in which nothing relating to the central plot: the fate of Arjie’s family is occurring. In this way, the gaps help keep the pacing even with no long superfluous passages, and also keep the plot on track; never letting the storyline lose clarity or focus. Just as Arjie gradually becomes more aware as he gets older, so too do the things that happen to his family escalate as the book raises the stakes for both Arjie personally and his family as a whole. So while the gaps in time confuse in terms of defining the book as a novel given that they are, in surface content, fairly unrelated, I still found them exceedingly useful in allowing Selvadurai greater scope without adding unnecessary length.
