Took a bit of time to myself to finally sketch out my vision for Frida based off Andy Suriano’s Farewell. More design thoughts under the cut.

I know some were wary of her appearing too feminine, but honestly I enjoyed the challenge of finding a way to feminize the base turtle model and stay true to Andy’s wonderful design. I don’t want her to just look like her brothers in a show that embraces their differences.

The biggest thing I added to her design was an exposed heart. My own little twist inspired by a real life issue some turtles deal with as well as a fitting ode to the artist she is named after, Frida Kahlo, who often drew herself with her heart floating outside of her body. (And yes I made the creative decision to keep her heart at her center as with many turtles.)

This deformity occurred during her mutation where the sudden growth spurt tore open a hole at the seam of her plastron. She has survived as long as she has because of Big Mama who uses mystic wards to keep her heart physically safe and emotionally numb. If you look closely to her plastron in the show it’s not actually a natural body part but rather seems to be an attachment of her trench coat. Likely a false cover to hide her obvious weak spot (or at least that is my head canon!)

I love the idea of her and Donnie having something they can relate to and I’m sure he’ll be happy to design chest armor for her down the line once she’s free of Big Mama. Maybe someday I’ll figure out her full Mad Dogs outfit, but for now this is just her base and bandana.

As each of the boys embodies a shape, I found it all too fitting to have Frida’s be a heart. It’s honestly a cool shape that uses both rounded forms and sharp points, which I think would encapsulate her character well. Prickly on the surface but a softy deep down. I tried to find less typical ways of feminizing her. Sharpening her beak and digits while retaining the style of feminine eyes present in most of the female cast but matching it more closely to the unsettling shape of the eyes on her assistant’s mask.

Her markings are a color flip of Mikey’s, where as his are yellow spots with orange outlines hers are orange with yellow outlines. Coupled with her yellow eyes to match Donnie and Raph, it gives her this fiery vibe that I think still sets her far apart from Mikey.

The mask was honestly the hardest part. I love that it further accentuates her heart motif and made her more expressive, but just giving her the obvious bow and calling it a day did not sit well with me. I decided to try more of a high ponytail look, but I think it still needs some work. I’m pretty sure I like her with yellow though, both as a nod to Jennika and the idea of April giving her something of her own to help form the bond between the two.

Would love to flesh her out further but back to my usual stuff first.

DARK NINPO YES!! I love the idea that maybe hers is green (like Splinter and Karai's) but it has that more yellowish tint sort of like the empyrean? To visually tie her closer to the Hidden City and that world

thinkin abt frida’s ninpo, i said this somewhere on twt but i think it’d be cool if she could go invisible since the family didn’t know abt her for awhile and she used to hide behind a mask.

maybe it’s like a ghost/danny phantom thing too where when she’s invisible she can walk thru walls or smth :D

When asked about the missing Turtle siblings plot line that had originally been planned for season 3 of Rise it was stated that one of the Turtles missing siblings would have been trapped in another dimension for years while the other would have been Big Mama's Assistant.

While we don't know much about the other missing Turtle sibling the Rise team did tell us that they had been planning to name the two missing Turtle after artists similarly to how the Turtles were named after Renaissance artists & that Big Mama's Assistant could have possibly been named after the painter Frida Kahlo with Frida being the name that was considered for Big Mama's Assistant.

This wouldn't have been the first time a character has been named Frida however as back in 2017 Nickelodeon released a short called 'Teenage Mecha Ninja Turtles' which follows a future version of Mikey’s students who fight crime in Turtle mechs with each one of Master Michelangelo’s students are named after different artists.

There are some similarities between Rise & the Teenage Mecha Ninja Turtles as Frida 'the red Turtle’ is the leader of the team similarly to how Raph was the leader of the team for most of Rise.

Due to how Rise & the Teenage Mecha Ninja Turtles both had 'the red Turtle' as the leader & how they both would have possibly had a character named Frida, part of me wonders if Frida being a possible name for Big Mama's Assistant was possibly inspired by the Teenage Mecha Ninja Turtles & if the other missing Turtle sibling could have possibly be named Kusama after Yayoi Kusama similarly to Frida's team mate from the short.

Considering that we only know a few things about the missing Turtle siblings that the Rise team have told us & we only have the brief appearance of the extra mutation chambers in the episode 'The Evil League of Mutants' as well as Big Mama's Assistant's appearances we can only really speculate about what they would have been like but it is fun to wonder about them.

Her 🩵 A headcanon of gear-less look and ninpo presentation. I think she’s a false map turtle, so I gave her a scalloped shell, also to represent Raph. Their shell’s are also a lil’ spiky but in a flexible way. Her plastron is a little bit of a mix but mostly Leo and Raph inspired. I added little line marks just for my own interpretation and to add a little more umph. I think she’s real pretty.

Soooo this has been rotting in my folder for months as I moved to figure out how to portray her in my comic and in general. (Her keeping the came indirectly being confirmed as canon xD)

So here we have big sister Frida, known as Jennika under Big Mama. She refused to tell Splinter her name, so he gave her one he'd given her had she stayed with him and the boys!

When she leaves Big Mama, she also leaves behind that name, adopting the one she feels was stolen from her, like the rest of her identity and being, as she struggles to reclaim it, fit in with her family, and find out who she was meant to be.

Big ol' shout out to @kathaynesart for letting me play with her take on Frida's shell design. Ended up with an Art-nouveau look with it.

I also paralleled her a lot with Mikey design-wise since he's 'the youngest' but also gave her, her own things, like the extended wrap height, and cape, while keeping with some the things we know from other iterations of Jennika.

As you can tell, I changed some stuff

I based her off of a bog turtle. I darkened her green because of that.

Might tweak the green later

But also, a lot of times female characters are lighter colors. In the comic Frida gets this treatment and I did not like it. It's a weird sexist trend I see

Irl turtles tend to be darker when they are females too

Honestly I can see human Frida as super dark skin like Nyakim Gatwech

A friend opted to make her a painted turtle to tie in with Frida Kahlo but I stuck with bog turtle because of that

Knowing you have a fanchild of Raphmona that is called Frida, and in Rise the turtles' long lost sister is called Frida, what would you imagine them meeting?

(I think 2012 Frida would find Rise Frida really cool and adore her markings and say she is her but cooler and more badass)

I think you pretty much summed up OC Frida’s reaction towards Rise Frida. OC Frida would find Rise Frida very cool and pretty especially her yellow facial markings. She probably at first assume it’s makeup and ask her how she did it with Rise Frida having to explain to her that it’s part of her body similar to OC Frida’s freckles.

I’d like to think that Rise Frida would love her niece from this alternate universe lol We don’t really know what Rise Frida’s personality is like, but I kind of headcanon that personality is similar to Rosa from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so her reaction to OC Frida would be something like this:

The exposed heart idea was so cool, and I get how it can give her a vulnerable/inferiority complex. I drew her with sunflowers because they’re a symbol of inner strength.

To me she’s most likely a yellow bellied cooter turtle

they almost got they same eye marks sorta???

idk, it’s just a headcanon for now until they reveal her species and the other brother

frida design cause i’m mourning that we never really got to see her. i think she’s so cool :(

ramblings abt her design underneath

i see designs of her as a red eared slider a lot, but since all the other turtles r different species i wanted her to be a seperate one too. i think she’s roughly the size of donnie and leo, so i chose a four eyed turtle cause i thiiink they’re the size of red eared sliders?

i gave her both short and long mask tails cause otherwise there would be an unbalanced number of short and long mask tails

for some reason i imagine her as the oldest of the turtles, like a year older than raph so the same age as april
