4 Ways To Cure Writer’s Block

The very good news is that writer’s block isn’t terminal, and I certainly don’t think writer’s block is as enigmatic as some people seem to think. I believe it’s actually quite a simple problem, and usually due to one of a few common factors. Let’s look at four ways you can push yourself through your case of ye olde block.

1. Check in with yourself.

Step one is always to check in with yourself. 

Start by reviewing your basic self-care needs:

Are you staying hydrated?

Do you feel hungry?

Would a shower or a nap be beneficial?

Is it time for a walk or some stretching exercises?

Consider your environment as well. Maybe you need:

Noise-canceling headphones

A change of scenery

A babysitter or someone to help around the house

To open or close some windows

Next, evaluate your level of focus. Is your mind wandering elsewhere? It can be useful to create a "dump list" to jot down anything that's causing you stress, such as work-related issues, pending tasks, or upcoming events. Setting that list aside can give you the tangible feeling of pushing those things off your desk to worry about later.

Once your body, mind, and environment are sorted out, you'll likely discover that writing becomes a bit easier!

2. Look back at where you’ve been.

Even if the first tip did or did not do the trick, let’s take a look at the project itself.

Sometimes writer’s block is a blessing in disguise! Your creative gut might be telling you that something went awry. Try reading your project back and pinpointing where it became difficult to keep going. Consider alternate plots or paths to get your writing flowing again.

If you're managing multiple plots and subplots, identifying the moment you deviated from the main path can be quite challenging. To pinpoint which plot line is causing issues, you can take advantage of NovelPad's handy feature: Plot tracking.

On the Plot Board, you can review every scene of a particular plot in order, making spotting those errors in your plotlines much easier.

3. Rewrite a problem scene.

Once you've identified the scene causing issues, it's time to make improvements! This can be challenging because there are countless ways to approach a scene.

The Fool

A daughter of psyker, born on board the Black Ship, Iza had little chance to keep her life, yet, she was lucky. A group inside Astra Thelepatica needed people with a high chance of psy-manifestation to test and train. Years spent in Scholastia Psykana facilities gave Iza a fair amount of loyalty indoctrination… and a couple of examples of people twisting the letter of Lex Imperialis to better serve its spirit: the start of her personal collection of Iconoclast icons.

After a sanctioning that went wrong and blocked out a major part of her potential, she was trained as a telepath and assigned to Navis Imperialis, where she had her moment of triumph and thus attracted Theodora's attention.

Needless to say, Isabella wasn't ready for the task, and when she had to take responsibility for the dynasty and protectorate, she had only two people to rely on: Abelard and… an image of the only Rogue Trader she knew. And, for a long time, she tried hard to be Theodora v2 in image, in mannerism, and sometimes even in action.

The Strength

For a long time, Iza treated 'Isabella von Valancius' as a construct, she stopped to believe in her titles as soon as Abelard's voice pronounced them dissolved in the air. Yet she was stuck in the role of Rogue Trader and had to play it as well as possible because she was a big fan of living.

But then something happened, and by something I mean "Comorragh". Stripped of all her wealth, influence, and regalia, of her image, of her people, Isabella was left with what she was. And it turned out that a bald psyker who has nothing but the adamantium will and talent for commerce and negotiations is pretty damn good for surviving the horrors of Dark City.

She made it, she saved her people, and she stopped them from killing each other (oh they TRIED). The person who came back from Commorragh knew her worth and her strength. Isabella still respected Theodora but chased her shadow away from her ship. She never asked Abelar to introduce her since then.

The Hermit

The power corrupts, but the power was never something Isabella wanted. All she wanted was peace, and maybe she could have found it as a Rogue Trader, but among other things, she was a psyker.

Her power started to grow after the Night of Change aka the night she became a Rogue Trader. After meeting a certain birdie Isabella reached her predicted potential… but didn't stop there. As not to write an essay: she suffered, and she suffered, and she suffered a lot.

So at some point, she prepared an heir and regents and exiled herself to a small house surrounded by miles and miles of nonhabitant space, and got the biggest luxury an Imperial citizen can ever afford: peace. She left the Expanse as free and unruly as it was before her arrival, but her protectorate was safe, stable, and a better place even for those who were considered second-grade citizens.

Isabella's condition was getting worse, so after about ten years, she decided to end her life.

Amunet

Daughter of the moon, disciple of Khonsu, radiant maiden of darkness, and the Pharaoh’s love

In Ancient Egypt, Amunet was a priestess to the moon god Khonsu and served at one of his many temples. Originally, she was born and raised as a devotee to the Greek goddess Artemis and grew up in one of the goddess’ cults. Amunet’s childhood consisted of training, frolicking and sports, and dancing in Artemis’ name. But this childhood came to a dramatic end when Amunet’s cult was destroyed during a military campaign and she was left on her own. She was soon found by the high priest of Khonsu, who right away recognized immense spiritual power in her, and thusly took her in. From then on, Amunet grew into a living saint. She devoted her life to serving the moon and all it stood for. She herself was essentially a human incarnation of the moon: radiant, mysterious, pure, and powerful. She was a master archer, a healer to the body and soul, an oracle, a medium between this world and the next, and an exorcist of malevolent forces. It was rumored she was a child of Khonsu himself or a deity in disguise.

In actuality, Amunet balked at these rumors. She was far from what people thought her to be. Beneath her serene and flawless exterior and the isolated life she lived, Amunet was a free-spirited, happy-go-lucky young girl with strong emotions and opinions yet also an open heart and mind and an overall love for the world around her. She saw beauty and wonder in anything and was able to find a bright side in even the grimmest situations. She could be strong-willed and have a fiery temper, which came out most of all when someone was being hurt or injustice was done. Being energetic, she loved athletic activities like swimming and archery and, like most priestesses, she dabbled in singing and dancing. Amunet also loved games, her favorites being the ancient board game senet as well as riddles and puzzles, and she was very proficient in them thanks to her wit.

Amunet was selfless to the point she put others above her, even at her ownn expense. She could be very shy and, in spite of her reputation, she had low self-esteem. She also could feel lonely and isolated. Nevertheless, Amunet was content as a servant to the gods and helping others. She had no thoughts of falling in love nor did she expect to, which was why she took the vow of chastity, swearing off marriage and relationships in the name of the gods. At the end of the day, few realized that Amunet’s true power lied within her large, pure heart.

Then came the day she met the young pharaoh Atem. The two met when Amunet treated him after a grueling duel. Right away they clicked. Atem was fascinated by the young priestess and Amunet developed an attraction to him. It began with stolen glances and coming up with any excuse to be around the other. Atem became a patron to the temple of Khonsu (the very one Amunet just so happen to serve at) and the two frequently shared walks and game sessions (which were long and exciting due to the two being quite the match) and Amunet helped him hone his archery skills. It wasn’t long before a secret correspondence of coded letters and hidden rendezvous were added. A passionate love affair struck up.

Unfortunately, it all came to a tragic end: the true nature of Atem and Amunet’s relationship was either known or at least suspected by those closest to them, including Aknadin. He was horrified by the relationship and saw Amunet as a threat. She had to go.

Amunet died in her pharaoh’s arms. Needless to say, Atem was devastated. Amunet was mummified and entombed beneath a statue of Khonsu near the temple she served. Not long after, a small oasis formed there and grew beautiful lotuses. Strangely, the lotuses there would stay bloomed in the moonlight, rather than retreating like their kind normally do.

All of life's colors are dulled after the argument with Ser Otto. Food tastes like effort, and socializing feels pointless when you’re heavy with so much sorrow. Bitterness pools in your chest whenever you think of the sweet moment you shared with him.

But you cannot fault Ser Otto for his assumptions, no matter how hard you yearn to. A man in his position needs a healthy amount of cynicism to protect the king from political threats. 

No, this depression is born from the daunting future that awaits you, not from the person you still care for. 

Your betrothed is an oaf of a man. Fortunately for your family, he has failed to create an heir, and his late wife died in childbirth. His drunken violence is known throughout, but you know it will be worse than the stories that flow on the lips of travelers and servants. 

But it is for this reason that he is paying a hefty sum to your family in place of accepting a dowry. This marriage is the raft your family needs to stay afloat, and you are willing to drown for them. 

You always knew this day may come, so you cherished the time you spent free and happy. Skills were sharpened, knowledge devoured, and friendships were made that you will continue to hold dear. 

Perhaps their memories will keep you warm while you suffer your future husband’s cold embrace.  

You wait an unusually long time for the letter to arrive with the wedding plans. When it is finally placed in your hands, you are surprised to read that the wedding is to be held within King’s Landing. It makes no logical sense to have it here when the lord has an estate worthy of hosting.  

Yet the curious plans grant no time to wallow, and you’re thankful for it. Arranging boarding for your family, a tailor for your dress, and the most difficult of all; scheduling the wedding with the Sept.

For all the others, you only had to show the letter with your house seal. But for the Temple, they would not speak with you in any official capacity. They require a face-to-face meeting with your betrothed before agreeing to join your houses. 

The nights are long and unforgiving while you await your family’s arrival. Nightmares plague your sleep when you are lucky enough to doze, and the lack of proper rest feels punishing on your body and mind.

You’re smart. You can make this situation better for you by cunning manipulation and acting. Work within your confines as much as possible, and maybe you will have a life worth living. And if not… you’ve read about how to deal with that as well. 

The silky indigo fabric of one of your best dresses complements your dark mood as you ready to greet your family. You have received no word of your future husband’s arrival, and frankly, it made your anxiety worse. 

Would he be there with them? Did they travel together? 

Happy thoughts of seeing the faces of your beloved family barely scratch the surface of your turmoil, and you cannot help the despair you feel in that as well. It has been years since your last visit home, and this should be a joyous occasion. Instead, it melts on the tip of your tongue and becomes one with the stormy seas of your mind. 

After all, what hope does a single drop have to change the flow of the ocean?

The walk to the courtyard feels like walking to your funeral, and each click of your heel is another tick of the clock counting down your doom. The last light of the evening cloaks everything in a cool, shadowy blanket, night-touched wind chilling you through your dress. 

Perfectly poised in a manner befitting your station, you put on a smile when the horsemen carrying your banner ride through the gate. 

It takes a moment for your family to emerge. The road is long, you know better than anyone. You hope it wasn’t too rough on your poor mother. 

She is the first to come out, brimming with a smile before she even lays eyes on you. It puts your previous worries to rest, but also unnerves you. 

What is there to be happy about? Her daughter is marrying a drunken oaf! 

Your brother is next to appear, looking no less pleased than your mother. 

Why are they so excited to be in King’s Landing? They had both seen the city before, and they hated it! 

When their eyes find you they approach excitedly, yet stop a few feet from you, bowing courteously. Confusion contorts your face, and you’re about to call them impostors when you hear a familiar voice from behind. 

“It is an honor to receive you both, my lord and lady.” Ser Otto joins you at your side, greeting your family with respect. 

You freeze, an icy grip squeezing your heart at the sound of his voice. Forget being confused, you are utterly lost. 

“The honor is ours, Ser Otto.” Your brother speaks with a humble graciousness you have never seen before, and you get the sense that he is thanking Ser Otto for more than just receiving them. 

“I will have you shown to your rooms; you must be weary from the road. We shall talk of wedding plans over breakfast tomorrow after you have rested.” Ser Otto bows and servants spring forth unloading your family’s luggage. 

Your mother is quick to switch gears, directing them to be careful with specific crates she deems frail while your brother is led away, presumably to his temporary chambers. 

While everyone is busy around you, the dizzying feeling builds within. You cannot even tell if you are breathing! One errant breath could end this dream, and you want to cling to it with every part of your being. 

“You must have questions—” Ser Otto stops when he meets your gaze for the first time that evening. 

You would like to believe it to be caused by your beauty, but you know better. Weeks of poor sleep, stress, and not eating have taken their toll on you. 

“Are you not pleased with our betrothal?” He asks, voice low.

Misako never visited Llyod. Never sent him a letter, never came back atleast once for parent conferences, and overall didnt give him any closure for around the first 8 years of his life. She left him at a school for the evil and ran away. Then he followed, ditching school and putting himself and others in serious danger.

She also hit on Master Wu while still technically married to garmadon, infront of Llyod to. Imagine your deadbeat mom randomly coming back in your life after years and hitting on your uncle, all while having to process aging from 8 to 13 in seconds and having a dad like garmadon.she could have dropped him off with wu his only other blood relative and someone she knows and trusts who could protect him teach him right from wrong, how to defend himself.

And she got really bloody lucky that Lloyd actually became the green ninja because all her decisions are seem to be validated by the other characters even though she’s a terrible person.

Garmadon on the other hand is a bad person sure but not by choice but even though he is corrupted he still puts a side his goals to take over ninjago and sides with the ninja to safe his son, and even after Lloyd is revealed the green ninja he is proud of him, still going to safe his son siding with the skeleton army once again to give Lloyd a fighting chance, and that’s just in season one

Season two he tries to stop Lloyd from unlocking his true potential but he refuses to harm him in anyway And then when he finds the dark island he has to be pushed to fight Lloyd but even then he hates it and ends up just getting consumed by the overlord

And in season three even though he takes up an oath of none violence the minute Lloyd was taken he brakes it in his own words “when you don’t my son all bets were off” and I could keep going but I think I made my point Garmadon even though he was bitten by the great devour and turned evil he still loved and cared for his son and would try to be their for him well misako just left and abandoned him because she had a hunch and even wurst she left him at a boarding school for villains She takes people for granted. She missed Lloyd's childhood just so she could find a way to stop the final battle, but couldn't. Sure, it had a positive impact on his future, but she sacrificed his present. And she just flits between Wu and Garmadon like nothing,she caused her son to free multiple snake armies that summoned a giant snake that killed multiple people and destroyed others homes and made them homeless.

She flirted with her husbands brother behind his back in season 4 and claimed I should have chose you.

And she left her son at a school that turns people evil,she's useless to the story itself! In the show she is only used for explaining lore and stuff, but everything that she says can be said just as well by Wu, Garmadon, Ronin, Zane or Nya (depending on the situation). she also made passes at Wu while still being married to Garmadon I know he was evil, but time he became good she just forgot all about Wu, and then got mad about a nearly 40-year-old letter.   That shit is NOT COOL

Okay, I think that Misako is a very complex character.

I like to think of her as a person who is actually good but makes mistakes and later regrets them.

Yes, she left Lloyd...

She did it for his future and sacrificed his present, that's how it had to be.

Why in a school for bad boys?

Well, my dear, we don't have any answer to that.

The writers wanted Lloyd to be there.

Why not with Wu?

She knew about Morror, and Wu would certainly train him to become a ninja, and she wanted to prevent that.

Leaving him in a school for bad boys was a very smart move.

Was it good or right?

Who knows, we can't know how it would have been if it had been different.

And she left him when he was 5 years old, maybe he was 5 in boarding school.

Garmadon is a villain and don't deny it. I love him and everything, and that he cares for Lloyd, good for him.

I'll just ignore this with Wu, because I stubbornly refuse to admit it.

I really don't understand if Lloyd forgave Misako why can't you.

Literally later we see that they became very close.

How can you be fans of Lloyd and Garmadon when you hate Misako and they obviously care about her and she about them.

Dislikes: uhhh spiders, driving (I refuse to get a driver's license it's a huge fear of mine.) I'm not scared of being in a car just driving it.

Isfp-t, I am a cancer. People say I have rbf (resting bitch face). Though I am really nice to people, unless they mess with the people I care about then I couldn't care less about them. I try to be helpful when I can. When I am around people I know, I can be loud and talkative (the loud part isn't on purpose it's just when I'm happy or excited). I tend to put people a lot before myself. I don't really like talking about my personal issues to anyone and can be known as the therapy friend. It's the opposite though when I'm around people I don't know, I'll be quiet and not wanting to interact. I have adhd, depression and anxiety (wonderful I know). When I do get upset I don't talk and won't interact until I have calmed down. I do cuss a lot though I'm more careful when I'm around kids/people I don't know. If I have a fight with someone I prefer to sit and talk it out and hate it when they walk away from me when I'm just trying to talk to them.

I’m not 100% decided on Halsin’s MBTI. Part of me feels he’s introverted, then again, he’s very willing to meet and work to help others- strangers even, so long as they’re kind and help him in return. I do, however, feel pretty confident that he’s a Feeler as well, so you have one letter out of the four for sure in common. And the two of you are also very open-minded, which he loves. Halsin can’t see himself in a romantic relationship with someone if they were to be angry and close-minded. An on/off sexual relationship? Sure. But for him to have that deeper kind of love, you’d need to be tolerant- which you are!

I also imagine him to be a Taurus, which furthers how compatible he is with you- a cancer. You two are so in love, it’s almost spiritual, like a soulmate sort of connection. His presence radiates calm- he’s like a walking talking security blanket. If you’re feeling anxious, you can grab his hand, or have him lay on top of you for some compression therapy (don’t worry, he’s supporting 95% of his weight himself so as to not accidentally crush you lol).

He appreciates how mindful you are around the little ones. It makes his heart flutter. And he can’t help but think what it would be like to be in a family of his own with you one day.

♥ ♡ ♥ Shadowheart is quiet and determined. She’s reserved, especially around strangers, and she puts on a good front, but deep down she’s a sweet girl with a traumatic past. She doesn’t like talking about it too much (that is of course, if she remembers it), but for some reason, she’s more okay sharing such things with you.

She’s not very extroverted or loud, but she can appreciate it when you are. Your joy is infectious, and it’s something she hasn’t felt in a while, so she wants to do everything in her power to make you happy because when you’re happy- she’s happy.

And oh boy does she need therapy! As the therapy friend, she greatly appreciates your ability to listen and not judge when she does talk about her past or her feelings. Being raised in a cult is complicated, and there’s A LOT to process there. It’s gonna take time, and thanks to your open-minded demeanor, she feels safe enough to do a fair amount of it with you.

As a cancer, you and Shadowheart are very compatible romantically as I see her as an Aquarius. Both of you are smart, and devoted, and have a lot of feelings. The main difference is in how those feelings come out. For you, it’s easier to emote than it is for her. But that’s good. When you’re too emotional, she’s ready to reel you back in. And when she’s being too cold, you can help pull her out of her shell.

Shadowheart also has a ‘resting bitch face’, but that doesn’t mean she’s judging everyone. So weirdly, it’s almost a blessing her partner knows what it’s like living with these things. Your experience shows her that life can and does go on. And she doesn’t want to spend the rest of her with anyone other than you.
