Lille pige – stor stemme, stor personlighed, stor udøvende kunstner
Old jewish cemetery - Fredericia, Denmark
In Fredericia lies the largest Jewish cemetery outside of Copenhagen (Denmark), and it contains about 550 graves.
The city's Jewish history dates back to the year 1675, when the tobacco spinner Abraham Jacobsen Levi became the first Jew to obtain a residence permit in the city, which was also one of the earliest Jewish immigrations to the Danish kingdom.
Four years later, Abraham Levi's brother Moses Levi also received a residence permit in the city, and then the Jewish settlements in the city increased. That Fredericia was one of the first places in Denmark where the Jews could settle down was not accidental. The fortress town, which was set up in 1650, had a number of special privileges, such as the Stable Court, which gave trade monopoly to certain goods, which the Jewish merchants could enjoy. In addition, Fredericia's privileges were extended in 1682, introducing religious freedom, and the Jews were given the right to build a synagogue.
In the 1690s, the congregation in Fredericia had roughly the same size as the Copenhagen congregation, and around year 1700 a mosaic cemetery was established by the western rampart, which in 1709 also got a chapel. The oldest part of the square was built, where approx. 200 people are buried. In 1790, the square was extended to the south, and this part now houses up to 250 graves. Finally, the newest section opened in 1859, where a little more than 100 people were put to rest. More than 400 of the burial sites are identified. The size of the site also testifies that other congregations in Jutland and Fyn took advantage of this before they got their own jewish cemeteries. The last time there was activity at the cemetery was in 1921

The Nærum suburban district of Copenhagen, in Denmark, home to one of the most singular appealing allotment gardens in the world – the ‘round gardens’, which are actually oval.
Although allotment gardens or community gardens for growing fruits and vegetables — are found in countries all over the world, Denmark takes special pride in dating the phenomenon within its borders back to the mid-1600s, when small gardens were planted outside the fortress walls of Fredericia. The first modern allotment gardens in the country were created in 1821 near Aabenraa, gardens that are extant and protected by conservation laws. Also protected, but raising practical allotment gardens to the level of garden art, are the Nærum Allotment Gardens north of Copenhagen laid out by Carl Theodor Sørensen (1893–1979) in 1948.
Inspired by the courts of Renaissance and baroque buildings, as well as the writings of German landscape architect Leberecht Migge, who asserted that rolling terrain asks for curving lines while flat land prefers right angles, Sørensen used ovals to define the enclosures of forty allotments spread across the rolling lawn of a common green situated between public housing on one side and more traditional allotments on the other. (The ovals earned the project the Danish label de runde haver—the round gardens.) His initial plan, a regular grid of ovals spread across the site, gave way to a looser arrangement in which the ovals were laid across the curves of the slopes, resulting in a variety of vistas across the gardens and a dynamic flow through the interstitial spaces between the gardens.
Once Sørensen laid out the gardens, he prepared a seven-page booklet with guidelines and advice for the gardeners. Although each oval (technically an ellipse in geometric terms, laid out by two stakes and a long piece of string) was approximately 50 feet (15 meters) wide and 80 feet (24.3 meters) long—in the proportion of the Renaissance golden section—the individual gardeners were free to position their cottages, select the hedges, and lay out the interiors. In regard to the last, Sørensen provided four options to help the gardeners, but he stressed that his advice was a guide, not a directive. Even with such liberties embedded in the design, the gardens have some consistencies, particularly a preference for clipped over unclipped hedges, which make them a symbol of pride as well as history. I know there’s at least one person looking forward to this, so here goes: a list of interesting details from the Danish production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Klokkeren fra Notre Dame), based on the two performances I saw in October 2019.
Fair warning: it’s 90% about Frollo.
I saw the following cast in Fredericia Teater:
Quasimodo: Lars Mølsted Frollo: Mads M. Nielsen Esmeralda: Bjørg Gamst Phoebus: Emil Birk Hartmann Clopin: Oliver J. B. Aagard-Williams Something to know about the staging: there are seats onstage, three rows on both sides. Audience members sitting there get to wear hoods, and the seats are gently pushed back and forth depending on the scene. It gives the illusion of the ensemble being bigger than it really is, and sometimes, ensemble members sit and stand in empty spots next to these seats.
And now, from the Prologue onwards…
Christ, this Frollo has AUTHORITY. Sitting onstage, his little sermon at the beginning of the show is directed to us – the ensemble all bowed their heads, and only my unwavering decision to enjoy every second of Frollo without as much as blinking helped me to keep my head high. He’s scary!
When he becomes archdeacon, Frollo does a Cinderella spin where his plain black robe magically turns into a white, ceremonial one.
Frollo smiles at baby Quasi before he sees his face. And why shouldn’t he! A very sweet 1.5 seconds of undiluted happiness in between proud uncle and nephew there before the former’s prejudices kick in.
I obviously didn’t get a chance to see it quite up close enough to see the inscription, but otherwise, it seemed to check out – if Instagram is to be trusted, Frollo wears a replica of The One Ring throughout the show. Might explain certain aspects of his behaviour?
~
In the beginning of the show, Quasimodo and Frollo seem to truly, genuinely care for each other! They hug and everything. Frollo being emotionally abusive is subtle and he’s probably not consciously aware of it himself – he simply does not have the capacity to understand that Quasimodo (or anyone else, for that matter) experiences the surrounding world in a fundamentally different way from his own. (“And can stone talk back?”)
Frollo seems truly surprised when Quasimodo says he could protect him – and it felt to me he means it when he says he didn’t mean to laugh at Quasi. Frollo also chats with Quasi in a quite relaxed manner (too bad, though, that his idea of small talk is racist rambling).
~
Quasimodo is SO happy outside. He does a little dance on one of the onstage seats!
There are many, many ladies throwing themselves at Phoebus. It seems like he’d be happy with just one, but they keep coming and he decides to just roll with it.
Esmeralda’s so full of life here. Rythm of the Tambourine is not seductive but so vivacious, small wonder all the guys crush on her.
The light/video design goes all pink with falling flower petals when the three men fall in love with Esmeralda. A bit silly, to be honest.
Both Phoebus and Frollo (!) laugh/smile at the King of Fools contestants (you can only really see this from the onstage seats)… until Quasimodo pops up, of course.
The congregation covers in shame/fear when Frollo does his little speech about showing kindness to all Lord’s creatures. Probably mostly fear, the man really has an aura of authority.
~
At first, Esmeralda is all mesmerized by Notre Dame (and why wouldn’t she be, it’s a gorgeous place and I guess we all remember how we felt when it looked like it’s going to burn to the ground last April) but she has some great expressions when she understands what Frollo’s all about. At very first, she turns the other cheek – but of course, it takes Frollo less than 15 seconds to be gross again, and then she’s simply done with his bs.
Esmeralda and Quasimodo are SO CUTE during Top of the World. Talk about chemistry – the actors are married in real life, that might have something to do with it… The whole scene is one of my top 2 favourite moments in the show. It’s so beautiful and optimistic (!) and pure, with stars in the sky and all Quasimodo’s statue friends supporting him… Finally, finally Quasimodo has a human friend. I cried, I’m this close to crying right now.
Right after, it’s time for some Quality Frollo Comedy! He does the mocking SpongeBob meme to Esmeralda when she says Quasimodo ringing the bells was her fault (“iT wAs My FaUlT yOuR gRaCe”). Then he switches gears and tries SO HARD to be all suave around Esmeralda: he flings his cape around, sits on the balcony railing all nonchalant, almost loses his balance and does this little silly oops heh heh heh thing.
And then Esmeralda says she sees the way he looks at her and Frollo just flips. It’s been a long day, right? That awful Feast of Fools business, Quasimodo’s disobedience, falling violently in love/lust with a woman you’re supposed to hate, trying to hit on said woman on two awkward occasions, trying to act normal in the midnight mass in the middle of all this… The moment Frollo starts yelling, some switch in his mind turns and his downwards spiral begins.
Next, Frollo gives Quasimodo The Talk. The original script has Frollo slapping Quasi left and right here, but the Danish production takes a completely different approach. It’s 100% clear Frollo is trying to talk himself out of the “impure thoughts” he’s having, and he’s so borderline panicky about it that the mood catches onto Quasimodo. For a moment, they both seem equally lost, and in the end of the scene, they hug it out. You believe Frollo when he says the “you and I against the world” line. Despite all, he really seems to think of himself and Quasi as a sort of a ragtag team.
~
Hellfire here is a journey into Frollo’s mental breakdown. The colour scheme progresses from light blue tones to the whole cathedral being in flames, you have seductive dream Esmeralda (way more seductive than the real Esmeralda) beckoning come-hither and dancing just out of reach, the music gets more and more intense, the subwoofers are turned up to 11 so the floor is shaking and in the end, your heart is beating twice the normal rate and Frollo is screaming and you’re screaming.
After experiencing all that with him, you understand that in his mind, the mind that just broke beyond repair under our very eyes and all around us, Frollo really sees no way out of his situation other than dragging everyone else in general and Esmeralda especially with him. Go hard or go home when you’re losing your mind, I guess.
~
The following scene with King Louis sees the return of Comic Relief Frollo – nothing overtly funny, mostly just the king taking his sweet time to acknowledge Frollo, but since the previous scene was so intense, you’re laughing all the same. How do they even do it? How do they have the character have such an earth-shattering mental breakdown one minute and then do a successful comedy routine the next, and all without losing a trace of his frightening aura? WITCHCRAFT.
Frollo gets a hold of a sword during Esmeralda (at one point, Phoebus has two, loses both, and Frollo picks one up) and turns into a holy crusader. He’s getting to live out his revenge fantasy and he’s clearly enjoying every second of it – it’s been clear from the beginning that he inspires fear in his congregation, and now, he gets to act out every single bit of his sadistic impulses. This is where he goes full feral, so to speak.
Dream Esmeralda is back, dancing in the center of a fire whirl. I adore the video design in this production.
~
In the beginning of the 2nd act, Frollo has sunken further into his madness. He’s clearly unhinged, so much so that I have a hard time believing that he coldly calculates Quasimodo showing him the way to the Court of Miracles. Probably just a happy accident.
The exchange here, with Quasimodo lying and so forth, is tense from both sides. Frollo and Quasi are hugging it out again when the soldier pops in, and Frollo just glowers at him – can’t you see we’re in the middle of a hug here?
~
The end of the Court of Miracles scene is so absurdly good here. Frollo busts in, the Romani are rounded up, everyone leaves the stage except for Frollo, and then he has a good 10 seconds or so to just chew the scenery in complete silence. He has the sword, he glowers right, he glowers left, he does a little villain laugh, then he leaves.
There was some genuinely nervous laughter from the audience at the villain laugh bit, because goddamnit, he’s just so deliciously, almost unsettlingly villainous at that moment. You wouldn’t want to be left alone in the same room with this man, but there we are, all alone in a dark room with him – and it’s just a thousand or so of us versus one of him, so we’re clearly at a disadvantage here.
~
Frollo takes his cross off his neck when he goes to visit Esmeralda in the dungeon and leaves it outside the door. This is my favourite detail in the history of theatre.
You wonder what Frollo is thinking when he goes to burn Esmeralda. He seems almost happy at the beginning of the scene. Is it because he’s a sadist – or because he’s so damn sure Esmeralda is going to change her mind now, he doesn’t really stop to consider that he’s going to end up killing her for real? Could be either. Or maybe he’s just completely lost it and is not thinking about any consequences at all, hell-bent on taking his revenge...
Whatever it is though, having seen his eyes from the onstage seat when he left after setting fire to the pyre, I can tell you it wasn’t an actor performing a role at that moment. It was a man who’s just set the object of his obsession on fire and cannot believe what he’s done and is conflicted and hurting because of it.
~
Frollo is sobbing on Esmeralda’s body and touching her hair and hands and you just feel so gross – stop touching her, she didn’t want that, she’s dead and even now you won’t understand, STOP IT!
I’m certain that Frollo genuinely believes he could have loved Esmeralda. Love feels different to each and every one of us, and in the end, I’m so so sorry that this is what is feels like to him.
Quasi and Frollo’s dynamic during the last scene is so real. I believe Quasimodo when he says he’s lost everything he’s ever loved. In the end, my heartbeat is twice the normal rate again.
Quasi and Frollo always hug during the curtain call here. It’s a running theme with the two of them.
~
Can you tell how much I love this production?

Level upper - rock&roll EASA workshop
31.10. 2018
Due to collision and coincidance of same name - LEVEL UP by two workshop proposals chosen for RE:EASA 2018 was one of them renamed to Level Upper to avoid the confusion.
Confusion still remains till nowadays. I think forever.
_Poster for our tutor proposal together with Michal Kovac
_This is the initial application for RE:EASA 2018 in Rijeka, Croatia.
EASA TUTOR APPLICATION
Ok. So, for me being a tutor is much more complex role in participation on EASA than just to think of site-specific task to get done. Since I don’t care much how things run all around me and I always find my way to be happy,I d like to share that among the participants and that’s for me the most important thing I want to leave behind.
Before I had an actual idea of workshop I imagined, how I want it to end. How I want people to leave from EASA. What is there for them to realize. How to connect with other people and develop trust. Not to be afraid to express their opinions, not to be afraid of failing, not to be afraid at all. It’s the only thing I can show them, the only thing I think I m good at and prove that u don’t need to be genius, if your friend is a genius. Showing that your weak side is also a good side and cooperate, listen to yourself and help each other.
I would like people to feel the life in the city, not city as a structure, to understand that it looks certain way because people living there are certain way. I don’t want to show off and built one of a kind spectacular attraction, but slowly get under the skin of identity. If the impact we leave behind is just within EASA, I will be super happy, but if we will be able to impact the Rijeka itself I m one more step closer to my happy death.
Your only real job was to motivate me and you were successful.
FORMING PROCESS
At first I will introduce you with my personal problems I find in myself, in EASA itself, in Rijeka city and in the world. Didn’t figure out universe, yet.
MY PROBLEM
- no special knowledge about history, theory nor construction in architecture. /haha/
EASA PROBLEM
- enclosed workshops with almost no interaction with surrounding /city/, people /EASA or locals/
- lack of cooperation with other workshops sometimes not even knowing that workshop like that exists
- not often connected theory and practice within workshop and get done final product made by ultimate self
- too much structure introduced to new participants /free their mind a bit to not be scared of f.e. changing the workshop/
- tutor-participant deeper connection
RIJEKA PROBLEM
- lots of them but for me its definitely accessibility and connection
- access uphill, access to the sea, access to the river, shortcuts function, trespassing, distinguish private from public,
WORLD PROBLEM
- waste production
- people thinking as individuals
PROBLEM OF UNIVERSE
- ??
SOLVING the PROBLEMS in theory:
ME AS A TUTOR
I will try to base my whole workshop on collaboration with lets call it “external tutors”. My idea is very simple and very open. First of all I talked about this event with a lots of friends of mine. They don’t really have time for full EASA dose, but they are interested in coming for few days and bring some fresh ideas, help us and most importantly get to know EASA more (my sneaky intentions are for them to experience EASA for a bit,so they will help us with EASA Slovakia, if there is going to be some kind of miracle happening). Lots of them showed huge interest in what we are doing and want to get to know it better. The best part is that even if they don’t come nothing really happens.
This “external tutors” concept could work also within EASA. As well as on theoretical basis: (hey Pablito come here, what do you think about this performance) and also lets say on the Babel level: (Klemens be a doll and hand me the hammer and show me what to do). And again very nice is that even if they will somehow not cooperate (very much doubt it) we will just have to figure it out or fail. Failure is always an option.
EASA SPIRIT
I don’t think this is necessary to describe. I would like them to feel free to express anything they want to. Make myself very clear in the most unclear mystic foggy chaotic ways. I want them to naturally evolve, not to tell them what they should do. I m woman I don’t know what to do. I can not tell you now, if there is going to be mostly individuals working alone or we will play couples or somebody will come up with perfect idea that we all going to agree with and work together. Also I don’t know, if the workshop will end up theoretical or more practical or if people will leave the workshop cause they will think its shit. But still even on the most theoretical levels I want to motivate them to leave some kind of product behind. People need physical stuff.
RIJEKA SPIRIT
City is brainstormingly beautiful. (unlike Fredericia) It drives your creativity mad. I wanna use it to the fullest. I want them to be aware of the city and its potential. I want them to understand it subconsciously. Everything takes time. We can even waste hours and ideas will come more naturally. I want them to focus on details and how things are connected. I want to give them opportunity to communicate with random people and finding perfect spot for their ideas and share that: /..WHYTHIS IS IT../ with rest of us. Nothing to analyze or research – I d be happy if they could live the city and experience it, have fun, relax, feel. Take the shortcuts. Get lost. RE:turn. Break in. Trespass.
RE:THEME
My intentions are to RE:think certain connections or disconnections around the city. There is this RE:petition that RE:cur all around Rijeka in the name of accessibility of the city. The most basic architectural element, maybe even the first built structure since cave times that didn’t change - Riječke stepenice. I need it to be this specific to have all the freedom around it. Since they are everywhere in all kinds of forms its perfect to focus on the whole city by this specific element and react on the right spot. They are necessary part of the city. Shortcuts, usually mono-functional, boring, exhausting and sometimes absent.. I wanna question the meaning of stairs connected with function, different forms, destinations and future. My RE is more in the way that I d like to grasp the workshop. I was thinking of too many possible structures of working with this element that it seems there is actually no structure at all.
(final report: this RE:THEME part never happened)
WORLD
First note I put into my book about doing workshop was that I don’t want to built anything.. unless its not already laying there looking for the purpose. Then I remembered lots of interesting waste all around us while walking randomly through the city and I thought that that’s the way. Get the resources from the waste of Rijeka /win win/: get to know the city, empower creativity based on (un)limited options of resources, ask people for help and share your ideas at the end of the day with rest of the group or workshops that are interested in listening.
BUDGET
I would like to keep it as low as 0 kunas. I don’t like money. They are never right instrument.
Back to NAME OF TUTOR(S): Well, Petronela is first name.. with the possibility of working with “external tutors” outside and inside of EASA… but there is this one person I would like to take with me. It’s this initiative easy-going kid that have the best taste in everything what he produces, he believes in what he does and he is master of improvisation. (something like my personal Marin<3) Doing stuff naturally, having this super funny and conceptual ideas right there, right then, seeing problem as an advantage and challenge. I really can’t name anything he cant do.. from filming stunning documentaries and taking brilliant pictures to writing poems. He already fucking constructed nomadic skate ramp that he can take with him wherever with bike. (meanwhile broke down) But most importantly!! HE GETS STUFF DONE no matter how stupid and dangerous it is. If there is an idea, he just finishes it. (I think I kind of need him.)(and he said yes)
RE:CAP
(note: fill up form)
PROJECT NAME: LEVEL UPPER
TUTOR NAMES: Petronela and Michal Kováč, +1…
ZONE: maybeee
(note: there were suggested zones by organizers)
TYPE OF WORKSHOP: Self-sufficient
(if u are happy with yourself, u can make EASA great and EASA can make Rijeka great and Rijeka can make people of Rijeka great)
DETAILED PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Hopefully the essence is written above.
DETAILED PROJECT DOCUMENTATION: Very structured scheduled and detailed plans of improvisation
PARTICIPANT NUMBER: Around 10ish - mostly cute boys and ugly girls
BUDGET: 3-5 bottles of borovicka = already covered
MATERIALS + TOOLS + EQUIPMENT: Get from somebody that has it.
EXECUTION PLAN: Yes, we will all die eventually.
TUTOR(S) INFO: Trust me
PRESENTATION DAY - Rijeka
Speech at Drvoexport:
You are not alone in this world. Cooperation and collaboration of humans will lead us to much faster evolution of EASA kind. This workshop is about how to learn that you don’t need the structure to accomplish anything. We want us all to decide together, what will be the result of our effort.
We would like you to feel free to join us and leave us whenever you wish. We want you to enjoy and feel happy because that’s the final stage of our development (pyramid).

FINAL REPORT - coming soon

Soon-to-be Bayern Munich attacker Alphonso Davies leads the way, while Vancouver Whitecaps duo Russell Teibert and Doneil Henry have been called in. Toronto FC are sending Liam Fraser and Jay Chapman. FC Barcelona B’s Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla, formerly of the Montreal Impact, has been selected as well.
Toronto’s Jonathan Osorio misses out due to an injury.
Both Canada and their opponent have won both of their qualifying matches thus far, each boasting a flattering goal difference without conceding a goal. Canada are +13 while St. Kitts and Nevis are +11.
“We are really looking forward to this challenge as St. Kitts and Nevis have performed well in Concacaf Nations League thus far,” head coach John Herdman said in a media release. “Given our history in this venue, we know it is a tough place to get a result, but we are clear on our approach and the players will be ready.”

Danish Design: Fredericia Furniture
Last week I talked about one of the reasons why I traveled to Copenhagen recently. Today I want to talk about the other reason: I went to Copenhagen to discover more Danish design. This time it was all about Fredericia Furniture. Let me take you on a little virtual tour as we visit the showroom of Fredericia.
Fredericia is a family-run business and has been around since 1911. Yet I discovered the brand only recently, like a few months ago during a press event in Munich. But quickly I realized that I’ve known Fredericia for quite a while – without being aware of it! How come you might wonder. Well, Fredericia is the producer of some timeless Danish design pieces like the Spanish Chair or the J39 Chair by Borge Mogensen. But Fredericia is more than the edition of Danish design classics. Fredericia also collaborates with renown designers for special furniture collections. Jasper Morrison, Space Copenhagen, Gamfratesi, or Thomas Pedersen are among those working with Fredericia Furniture.
Our first stop in Copenhagen was the fantastic showroom of Fredericia Furniture. Located in an ancient post office building in Copenhagen’s city center, it breathes with history and charm. Where previously armadas of people were connecting phone calls, today a new design armada fills the space. Carefully selected design classic originals stand next to new and colourful collections. But one thing unites them all: Their commitment to the Danish design heritage and the emphasis of craftsmanship.
The guided tour by the owner Thomas Graversen and his son was very insightful as we learned about the company’s history and new and upcoming design projects. Furthermore we had the opportunity to experience the craftsmanship put into the making of a Spanish Chair. A leather expert from Sweden showed us how the leather is processed and cut for the Spanish Chair. Afterwards we got the chance to make our own key ring leather strap – what a nice little souvenir to bring home! To get a full understanding of the design process we continued to the office of Space Copenhagen, a design studio that collaborates successfully with Fredericia. We got first-hand insights into the design process from an idea to a finish product. Quite a journey, I tell you!
The day was crowned by a fantastic dinner in Fredericia’s top floor. Magnificent views over Copenhagen’s rooftops were only challenged by the beautiful Fredericia furniture, the dramatic tablesetting featuring flatware and silver candleholders by Georg Jensen, as well as a delicious five-course dinner. Add good friends to the table, yummy cocktails after dinner, and you know how magical a night in Copenhagen can be! Hope to see you soon again, you beautiful city!
This blog post has been brought to you in collaboration with Fredericia Furniture. As always all opinions and photos are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands who support this blog!
