Working on my new zine and prints that I make about the jewish heritage of the SchUM region. this acronym stands for Speyer, Worms and Mainz, three important jewish communities of the medival times, this places were basically the cradle of ashkenazic judaism as we know today (check for example the Takkanot Schum or the Chassidei Ashkenaz).
In the project I take the symbols I found in these cities and use an old, historical photograpy technique called cyanotype (or blue/sun-print) to create the prints.
This lion was found on a floor tile from the women’s prayer hall in Speyer. This building was added to the already existing synagogue in the mid 13th century, its floor tiles had a variety of motifs. A similar lion motif on a floor tile dating back to the same period, has been found also in Mainz, in the Dome area.
Let me know if you wanna read more about the project, order print or preorder the zine:)

🇺🇸 In a disturbing incident at one of Argentina's main Jewish cemeteries, 58 graves were desecrated by unknown assailants who vandalized tombstones and stole bronze plaques before fleeing without leaving any traces. Among the desecrated graves were those of eight victims of the bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA), the deadliest attack in the country's history, which claimed 85 lives in July 1994. The attack, discovered on a Sunday at La Tablada cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, occurred on Friday night during Sabbath closure, taking advantage of the quiet period. Jewish community leaders condemned the act, emphasizing its severity due to its occurrence in a sacred place.

Jewish cemetery in Muszyna, Poland
Located at Ogrodowa Street, on the outskirts of the town, the Jewish cemetery was probably established at the end of the 19th century. Currently, there are 84 objects on it, most of them are damaged to varying degrees, and some are only partially preserved. Judging by the layout of the cemetery and the arrangement of the existing matzevot, the number of burials in the period up to 1939 could have been 300 or more.

A broken rose symbol appers on the matzevah of a person who died tragically young. The person name was Heinrich Hirsch, whose Hebrew name was Mose Hirsch HaKohen. He was born in 1855 and passed away in 1857, on the 6th of February.
The broken rose usually appears as a symbol of a life departed before time, on tombstones of children in both jewish and non-jewish cemeteries. With similar meaning, a broken tree could also appear on the tombstones.
The tombstone is located in the Mainz Jewish Cemetery, which is part of the Unesco World Heritage sites. Now I'm working on a new zine that will present this jewish heritage sites for all.
