#OTD in Irish History | 24 May:
1487 – Lambert Simnel (aged 10), the Yorkist pretender to the English throne, is brought to Ireland. It is claimed that he is Edward, Earl of Warwick (Clarence’s son), but in fact, he is a baker’s son – the real Warwick is a prisoner in the Tower of London and will be executed in 1499. Most of the Anglo-Irish believe that Simnel’s claim is genuine and support him (exceptions are the Butlers,…

The Wikizilla article about the "Zilla Name Controversy" has some strange reasoning behind its conclusion. Isn't whether or not a character's name changed and whether or not the copyright status of a movie changed two separate claims? Aiken likening it to Kiryu is also erroneous, because the argument doesn't recognize that a name isn't the only thing delineating Kiryu from other versions of Mechagodzilla. If the only difference between Godzilla and Zilla is the name, then the name was changed.
That's a pretty old video, and not how I'd present the bizarre TriStar Godzilla/Zilla situation now. I'll refer you to the Name section of the Zilla page. Key points not in the video: Matt Frank stating that "Ever since 2004, Toho's official stance has been that any future incarnations of the character be referred to hereafter as 'Zilla'" (emphasis mine) and the ongoing production of TriStar Godzilla merchandise which calls the character "Godzilla."

Hey Bethany, this is in response to you saying you would like to read "Emma" from the perspective of Jane Fairfax. Do you know the book "Jane Fairfax", by English writer Joan Aiken? It tells the story of Emma from Jane's perspective, starting in her childhood, and it was published in 1993. It stood next to Emma and Pride and Prejudice on my parents' bookshelves and was actually my first contact with Jane Austen's body of work, because its language is easier to follow for a child or teenager, but as much as I love Jane Austen's other works, it made it hard for me to get through Emma because I already liked Jane Fairfax so much. It's been a few years since I last read it, so I don't remember the plot so very well, but I think it mirrors quite accurately what happens in Emma (I am not completely sure about that, though, because my view on Emma is skewed by this book, so don't quote me on that). It also made me understand better why she marries Frank Churchill and it also gives a deeper insight into the differences between Emma and Jane, both character-wise and regarding their upbringing. If you already know this book or if you ever get around reading it, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on it. I also really enjoy reading your blog and your opinions, analyses and interpretations on Austen's books. I have loved her books for a long time and your posts often open up new perspectives that I hadn't considered before, which I really appreciate. Take care!
I'm always interested to hear about someone's journey to Austen! Starting with fan fiction is probably an usual one. And thank you for the compliment!
I've been asked about this novel before... I'll quote myself: When it comes to FF of Emma, I have a cardinal rule: Mr. Dixon and Jane Fairfax cannot be in love. This FF breaks my cardinal rule and for that reason I haven't read it. This doesn't mean it's a bad book, the sample seemed fairly well-written, but it's probably not for me.
Also, from what I've read in reviews, this book ascribes to the theory that Jane Fairfax didn't love Frank Churchill and married him to escape poverty. I have toyed with that idea myself, but Jane's actions in the novel just don't fit with a mercenary marriage, mostly because when Jane thinks Frank doesn't love her anymore, she lets him go. Lucy Steele would never! She clings to Edward like gum until she has a viable and secured second option. So for me, it's unlikely that Jane wasn't also in love.

THE SHREDDER (FAN MADE)
2024 By Andrew Modeen, Mark Pellegrini, Arseniy Dubakov , Jim Lawson, Dennis Kennedy, Yuri Kochin, Andres Ponce, Rick Arthur, Keith Aiken, Frank Fosco, Dan Berger, and Courtland Brugger.
The Shredder returns once again to give exposition, kill characters that were already dead, and whatever.

SCORE: 3
This was almost a 2, and the reason it isn't is because there is a style already in place with Jim Lawson, and while it became confusing at critical moments of the story, I cannot really say I was expecting anything different. It's definitely not his fault that I got confused when I did.
And it's weird, that a story that completely underestimates the reader of a very targeted fan project, got me confused in the end. Well, more than just the ending... it kind of undid things that I assumed were going to stay the same in this alternate universe.

You may already know how I find epigraphs pointless most of the time, this graphic novel wasn't the exception. But I already know Andrew has some sort of compulsion to add them, so I wasn't really annoyed by them so much, mostly because, like what happened with the art, it is already a part of Andrew's style.
But the dialogues, man, that's where it always hurts. The unnecessary "LET ME SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU" exposition that takes up almost 40% of the dialogues, and sequences in this story, are just too much. And there is something in the way his character talk that just feels artificial.
As I was saying, the reader of a book like this, already knows 75% of the story. It's not cheap to make these puppies, so I feel like that was wasted potential to tell a fresh story. Did we need to bring back Shredder one more time? Did we need a Super Shredder?

There is a segment of this book penciled by Andres Ponce that made me wish the whole thing was done by him (although it wouldn't have really made things clearer). I am not sure what caused this chapter to be done by Andres, but his style, while manga inspired, is just more realistic than Jim's style. This wouldn't be a bad thing, but it is in the middle of the book, and the change of style is just too jarring. Since there is yet another chapter of Raphael fighting with Lucindra in this book (talk about endless cycles!), I think this encounter between Shredder and Karai could have added as a back-up story. I understand why it had to be in the middle of the book, but then the choice of art styles was wrong.

The moment that made me laugh was when Amaya died again. Why does Andrew keep bringing her back only to kill her?
And what is going on with Pimiko? Hear me out...
Pimiko and Amaya were explained to be mother and daughter in that "Image run unofficial conclusion" that Andrew made. Their death scene was one of the things I remember the most about those issues (not for any good reason), but that was there, and it was done. I wasn't expecting that story not to take place in the same universe, because the ending of it implied it led to Volume 4.
So we got a new spin on that story here. Which already took me (literally) out of the story, as I had to go check those issues, just to make sure I wasn't imagining things.
Then the other bit that really confused me and I just gave up was the last page of the main story. I feel I should recognize the characters... but I just couldn't tell what it meant. In a story that spells out who's who all the time, and what their relationship is to everyone around them, this last bit was a mystery.
There are significant changes to the origin of the Shredder as well. Nagi's act of violence is no longer the initial trigger of the cycle of revenge. Instead, it is explained that the Foot Clan... killed Saki's family... and then... kind of pushed Nagi into getting himself killed by Yoshi (okay...), to fuel Saki's rage and make him into their greatest warrior. It also introduced a proto-Shredder figure.
The book also ties ends. It kills April and Casey, because I am not sure why, April had to be at the duel with the Shredder. It is also revealed why Raphael and Shadow stopped seeing each other after this.
Also, female characters in these stories are technically the enemy, no matter what they're doing. Even when they're helping, they manage to betray someone, get themselves killed, or change their motivations every two pages.
There are Turtles in this story as well, but as you can imagine by the title, they are all kind of non-important and indistinguishable (I know Mikey is there because a Turtle has nunchaku).
The story does follow "TMNT: Origin" and namedrops "TMNT: 2030" (a story I thought took place in 2030, therefore the future of this timeline, but I now realize I have to read it again). This means the story is also in the same timeline as Odyssey, but lucky us, that story is not linked to this one explicitly.
So what did I like about this book? Well, it's always nice to see Mirage artists come in and do Turtles and their cast. Even if I feel the whole premise was a story I wasn't interested in reading.
How does it compare to Odyssey, Origin, and the conclusion of volume 3? Probably better than those. It has stiff dialogues with unnecessary swearing, and it's filled with cliches, but I think I either got used to them, or there was an actual improvement, especially in the story itself (not the dialogues). It looks like something Image Comics could have printed in 1993.
I don't know what plans Andrew has for the future, but I think getting more efficient with dialogue and script would really make his stories more entertaining.
Then again, it's clear that I am kind of alone in this line of thinking, as I always get recommendations from fans to read his stories. So what do I know?

The McNamara family
Meet Caro and Jack McNamara. The newly-wed couple moved into the sandy town of Lucky Palms together, still madly in love with one another.
Caro and Jack were ready to start their happy family together and would have two daughters: Chrissy and Wednesday (guess what shows I liked to watch during that time period).
Jack turned out to be a bit of an asshole, though, and cheated on his wife. The women of the family shut him out and Jack and Caro got divorced. Chrissy and Wednesday had no desire to stay in contact with their father any longer, so Caro was left a single mother.
Chrissy and Wednesday had a great sisterly bond.
As an adult, Chrissy became a scientist and even met a unicorn!
Wednesday got into tinkering and would make a million holes in the ground around the house.
Chrissy would get married to a wonderful man named Frank and have one child with him. Wednesday later got married to Johnathon Aiken and had a son with him as well.
And that's all I have for the McNamara family. Pretty sure I'll name another family McNamara sometimes, as I don't feel I've done then name justice just yet. But Chrissy and Wednesday will always be iconic and never forgotten.
Love only.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor wants permanent date for popular heavy-garbage pickup
Heavy garbage pickup day is something many CBRM residents look forward to, and this year the pickup is later in the season than usual.
The municipality said it was delayed because it had to find room in its operating budget to make the $250,000 garbacke pickup possible.
“The debate each year really needs to stop, to be quite frank,” said Jeff McNeil, CBRM resident.
Each year residents are left wondering if or when it will happen.
“So thrilled to finally have a date set and finally get the go-ahead to put items to the curb,” said Cyril MacDonald, CBRM Councillor.
MacDonald is hoping to leave the uncertainty around the popular pickup at the curb.
He wants a permanent date set each year, and plans to take that proposal back to council.
“Many residents just simply can't afford to hire a truck to haul it to the dump or just don't have the means to do that, so again I think it's a service that's important and I think we would have a number of more unsightly premises,” said MacDonald
ACAP Cape Breton said the heavy garbage pickup also helps prevent illegal dumping.
“It's a lot less energy to simply say listen I got this thing in my shed, I'm going to hold onto it for a few more weeks, because I know heavy garbage pickup is coming soon as opposed to not knowing a date or not having a date,” said Kathleen Aikens, Executive Director of ACAP Cape Breton.
Collection started June 26 and will last until everything curbside is picked up.
